In the last decade, there has been a growing and exponential development of innovative models commonly defined as NAMs (new approach methodologies), alternatives to animal experimentation and based on the human species, in the common effort to increase the reliability and predictability of the results obtained both in biomedical research and in regulatory testing, and at the same time to reduce (and ideally avoid) the use of animals for these purposes. However, recent analyzes suggest that the number of animals used for scientific purposes has not significantly decreased in recent years, especially when looking at those before the recent COVID19 pandemic. In this short article, I discuss what technical/scientific, cognitive, legislative/regulatory, and economic/financial challenges currently remain to be addressed in order for innovative models to be widely accepted and used.
