This study aimed to reveal the effects of increasing levels of rubber seed cake (RSC) on growth performance, nutrient digestion metabolism, serum biochemical parameters, and rumen microbiota in Hu sheep. In this study, 48 Hu sheep, weighing 17.01 ± 0.57 kg at 3 months of age, were randomly divided into four treatments: 0% rubber seed cake (RSC0%), 6% rubber seed cake (RSC6%), 12% rubber seed cake (RSC12%) and 18% rubber seed cake (RSC18%), with 12 sheep per group. Compared to the RSC0%, the ADG and DMI of the RSC6% and RSC12% were increased (P > 0.05). The apparent digestibility of OM and EE quadratically (P < 0.05) changed with the increase of RSC supplementation, with the greatest apparent digestibility of OM and EE observed in the RSC6% diet. With increased RSC supplementation, the N intake and fecal N increased linearly (P < 0.05), and the apparent digestibility of N reduced linearly (P < 0.05). As the increase of RSC supplementation, the serum levels of IgA, IgM, IgG, IL-4, T-AOC, and GSH-Px increased linearly (P < 0.05), and the serum level of IL-6 reduced linearly (P < 0.05). The serum level of IL-1β reduced quadratically (P < 0.05) with the increased RSC dose, and the serum level of SOD increased quadratically (P < 0.05) with the increased RSC dose. The ruminal NH3-N and the relative abundance of norank_Muribaculaceae quadratically (P < 0.05) changed with increased RSC supplementation, and the greatest relative abundance of norank_Muribaculaceae was observed in the RSC6% diet. In general, incorporating RSC into the diet of Hu sheep did not adversely affect growth performance and rumen fermentation characteristics. Supplementing with 6% RSC enhanced the relative abundance of norank_Muribaculacea in the rumen fluid and the immune and antioxidant capabilities. However, supplementing with 12 and 18% RSC might have negatively impacted nutrient digestion and metabolism. Three adult female Murrah buffaloes were presented with a history of consumption of young shoots of maize and sorghum. The animals exhibited signs of dyspnea, muscle tremors, ptyalism, tympany, diarrhea, and recumbency. Clinical examination revealed subnormal body temperature, tachycardia, tachypnea, and cherry red (hyperaemia/congestion), brownish to purple discoloration (cyanosis) of conjunctival, oral, and vulval mucous membranes. The blood samples from each animal were collected before the affected animals collapsed to death. Necropsy findings revealed dark red or chocolate-brown colored unclotted blood, pin-point hemorrhages in the epicardial surface, marbling appearance of lungs, hepatomegaly, distension of gall bladder, and congestion of blood vessels in the subcutaneous tissues and ruminal wall. Toxicological studies confirmed the presence of cyanide as well as nitrate/nitrite in rumen contents. Liver and kidney samples also were positive for nitrate/nitrite. Hemogram showed anemia as evidenced by significantly lower hemoglobin and total erythrocyte count values. Serum biochemical profile was altered with a significant elevation in aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, creatine kinase-MB, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and potassium levels. In addition to upregulation of acute phase (ceruloplasmin) and stress hormone (cortisol) responses, concomitant cyanide and nitrate/nitrite poisoning in the buffaloes resulted in oxidative (elevated malondialdehyde and glutathione S-transferase) and nitrosative (elevated nitric oxide) stress. Histopathological examination revealed thickening of interlobular septa due to congestion, hemorrhages and edematous fluid in lungs, along with marked congestion, hemorrhages, and degenerative changes in liver, kidneys, heart and brain. Simple Summary: Uncovering the potential value of corn straw is one of the strategies used to develop monogastric animal feed resources. The aim of the present study was to explore the dietary effects of different proportions of fermented straw as a replacement for corn on the growth performance and intestinal health of finishing pigs. Fermented feed supplementation was associated with the maintenance of immune functionality, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal integrity. Replacing corn with a total of 5% fermented straw in the diet improved the lipid metabolism and intestinal microbiota, while 10% fermented straw impaired growth performance. Therefore, replacing corn with 5% fermented straw in the diets of finishing pigs may be a practical and economical strategy for improving their intestinal health without detrimental effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the dietary effects of replacing corn with different proportions of fermented straw on the growth performance and intestinal health of finishing pigs. A total of 275 healthy commercial finishing pigs aged 126 days (average body weight, 82.96 ± 3.07 kg) were randomly allocated into three groups: the control (CTR, basal diet) group, the 5% fermented straw (FJJG5, replacing 5% of the corn) group, and the 10% fermented straw (FJJG10, replacing 10% of the corn) group. There were six replicates in each group and 14–16 pigs per replicate. On day 39 of the experiment, one animal from each replicate was slaughtered for sampling and for further analysis. The results showed that the finishing pigs in the FJJG10 group had a reduced average daily weight gain and an increased feed-to-gain ratio. The FJJG5 group had reduced total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein in their serum, while the FJJG5 and FJJG10 groups had reduced contents of lactate dehydrogenase. In addition, the FJJG5 group exhibited increased T-SOD activity and MDA content in the colon, while the FJJG10 group also showed increased T-AOC activity in their serum and increased contents of MDA in the colon. The FJJG5 group exhibited increased activities of jejunal disaccharidase and lipase, while the FJJG10 group exhibited decreased jejunal crypt depths. Moreover, the FJJG5 group presented an increased relative expression of APOA4, LPL, and MUC2 but decreased SLC7A7 and IL-10 in the jejunum and APOA4 in the colon. The FJJG10 group exhibited a decreased relative expression of SLC7A7 and IL-10 in the jejunum and decreased MMP13, KCNJ13, APOA4, SLC7A7, LPL, and IL-10 in the colon. Furthermore, the FJJG5 group exhibited an increased relative abundance of Lactobacillus in colon contents, while the FJJG10 group had a reduced relative abundance of streptococcus. In conclusion, 5% fermented straw can improve the lipid metabolism and colon microbiota structure of finishing pigs, while 10% fermented straw has adverse effects on the growth performance and intestinal health of finishing pigs. Simple Summary: This study focused on improving the nutritional value of palm kernel cake, a by-product of palm oil production, which is often used in animal feed but contains anti-nutritional factors. We used enzymes to break down these factors and then fermented the cake with beneficial microbes. Our experiments showed that these treatments significantly enhanced the nutritional content of the palm kernel cake. We tested this improved feed on broiler chickens and found that it led to better growth, higher feed intake, and improved nutrient absorption. This study aimed to improve palm kernel cake by reducing anti-nutritional factors with enzymes and enhancing its nutritional value through microbial fermentation. It also examined the effects of these treatments on palm kernel cake in broiler chicken diets. Palm kernel cake was hydrolyzed using xylanase and mannanase under various conditions. Co-fermentation with Lactobacillus plantarum QZSL and Saccharomyces boulardii mafic-1701 was assessed under different parameters. In the animal experiment, 350 male Cobb broiler chicks were divided into seven groups: a control group provided a corn-soybean meal diet, and groups provided diets containing 10% and 20% palm kernel cake, enzyme-hydrolyzed palm kernel cake, and bacteria-enzyme co-fermented palm kernel cake. Optimal conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis of palm kernel cake are 55 °C, pH 3.0, and a 1:2.5 feed-to-water ratio. Adding 0.1 g xylanase and 1.0 g mannanase to 10 g palm kernel cake for 12 h increased reduced sugar content to 139.33 mg/g and reduced neutral detergent fiber to 43.92%. For solid-state fermentation with Lactobacillus plantarum QZSL and Saccharomyces boulardii mafic-1701, optimal conditions are 37 °C, 5% inoculation, 20% moisture, 3 days fermentation, and a 7:3 bacterial ratio. Animal experiments showed significant improvements in broilers' growth, nutrient digestibility, antioxidant capacity, immune function, and intestinal health. Simple Summary: The postpartum period is a metabolically stressful time for dairy cows. During this period, cows face suppressed feed intake and a series of stressors that challenge the cow's ability to adapt to lactation. Previous studies have shown that offering cows a total mixed ration diet containing a slowly fermentable starch source during the early postpartum period increases their feed intake when compared with that for a faster fermentable starch source. This leads to an immediate increase in milk production that carries over to later in lactation. These cows also exhibit an improved energy balance and decreased metabolic stress. However, the effects of feeding starch sources with differing fermentability during the early postpartum period in pasture-fed dairy systems are unknown. This experiment determined the effects of feeding starch sources with contrasting in vitro fermentability twice a day with perennial ryegrass silage as the forage source on feed intake, milk production, body reserves, feeding behavior, and markers of metabolic stress. This experiment determined the effects of two different starch sources when offered twice a day to cows during the early postpartum period (1 to 23 d postpartum, treatment period) on dry matter intake (DMI), feeding behavior, and milk production. The subsequent effects on milk production in the carryover period (24 to 72 d) where cows received a common diet (grazed perennial ryegrass pasture plus concentrate supplements) were also measured. Thirty-two multiparous dairy cows were offered concentrate feed (8 kg DM/d) containing 5 kg DM of crushed wheat grain or ground corn grain (7 h in vitro starch digestibility of 65.8% and 58.8%, respectively). At each milking (morning and afternoon), cows were offered half of the concentrate feed, and upon return to their individual stalls, they were offered perennial ryegrass pasture silage (56.2% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 39.8% acid detergent fiber (ADF), 16.6% crude protein (CP)) at 130% of their expected daily intake. Dry matter intake, milk yield, and body weight were recorded daily. Blood and milk sampling, body condition score, and feeding behavior measurements were performed weekly during the treatment period. During the carryover period, milk sampling and body condition score measurements were conducted on a weekly and fortnightly basis, respectively. In the treatment and carryover periods, there was no significant effect of starch source treatment on DMI, milk yield, milk composition, change in body weight, or body condition. Similarly, the starch source did not affect the concentrations of blood markers of energy status or inflammatory response. Despite differences in the in vitro starch fermentability between treatments, the starch source did not significantly affect production responses. It is possible that the elevated NDF and ADF concentrations of the forage offered during the treatment period, the limited difference in starch fermentability between treatments, and the temporal supply of fuels to the liver when starch sources were offered twice a day may have offset the effects of the type of starch source on DMI and production via physical signals associated with rumen fill and distention. Sorghum is amongst the most drought-tolerant cereals in the driest rain-fed regions of the tropics and its utilisation in sustainable poultry production is limited by presence of phytochemicals. Thus, this study evaluated the effects of malting dietary sorghum on growth performance and haemo-biochemical parameters of Ross 308 broiler chickens. A total of 150 unsexed, 2 weeks-old chicks were evenly distributed into 15 replicated pens which were randomly allocated into three experimental diets and fed in two phase feeding. Three diets were formulated by completely replacing maize grain in commercial grower and finisher diets (CON) with red malted sorghum (RSD) and white malted sorghum (WSD). Broilers fed CON and WSD diets gained more weight compared to those fed RSD in week 3 and 5. The lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) was observed in CON in week 4 and 6. The protein efficiency ratio was the lowest with broilers fed malted sorghum-based diets (MSD) through out the study. Protein intake was the highest in broilers fed WSD in week 3 and 5, but lowest in week 4 and 5 in broilers fed RSD. Diets affected white blood cells basophils, corpuscular (volume and haemoglobin), corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, creatinine, bilirubin, and enzymes (GTP and GOT). Overall, the results from the present study suggest that maize grains can be replaced with malted white sorghum grains in poultry diets, without any adverse effects on the birds' growth performance and general health status. However, due to constraints in cost and production, exploring its greater potential and seeking alternative resources constitute a prevalent research focus today. This study evaluates the impact of extrusion processing on soybean meal in terms of digestible energy, metabolizable energy, amino acid digestibility, and anti-nutritional factor content. Furthermore, based on the data from Exp. 1, Exp. 2 investigates the effects of different inclusion levels of extruded soybean meal on the nutrient digestibility and growth performance of piglets. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of extrusion devices on the available energy and nutrient digestibility of soybean meal (SBM), and further to investigate the impact of different levels of extruded SBM on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility of weaned piglets. In Exp. 1, eighteen crossbreed growing pigs with an initial body weight (BW) of 32.6 ± 2.7 kg were randomly assigned to three treatments, including a corn basal diet, SBM, and extruded SBM diets. In addition, six cannulated pigs (initial BW, 22.3 ± 1.8 kg) were allocated across an 6 × 3 Youden square design. The experimental treatments included a N-free diet and three diets containing 40% of different SBM sources. The results indicated that extrusion reduced the anti-nutritional factors in soybean meal without affecting the digestibility of available energy and nutrients. In Exp. 2, 192 pigs (initial BW, 6.60 ± 0.54 kg) were allocated across four diets supplemented with 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9% extruded SBM. The four treatments were randomized and each comprised six replicate pens containing four boars and four gilts. The results showed that average daily feed intake (ADFI) decreased linearly with the increase in extruded SBM levels from d 0–14 (p < 0.05), and average daily gain (ADG) increased; ATTD was higher in the GE, DM, OM, and CP of piglets in the 9% extruded SBM group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the extrusion treatment reduced ANFs in SBM, and adding 9% extruded SBM to the diet improved the growth performance of weaned piglets by increasing the digestibility of nutrients. The study evaluated the effect of substitution of Pleurotus ostreatus biodegraded sugarcane scrapings (BSS) for corn bran on the growth performance and reproductive potential of Kano Brown bucks. Twenty-one healthy buck kids (6 – 7 months of age, with an average initial BW of 9.44 ± 0.39 kg) were stratified into three treatments and fed: (1) a total mixed diet containing no BSS (0% BSS; control), (2) the control diet containing 15% BSS substituting 50% corn bran and (3) the control diet containing 30% BSS substituting 100% corn bran on dry matter basis (DM) for 12 weeks in a completely and fully randomized design. Intakes of DM, crude protein and organic matter, and sperm concentration varied in the order: 15% BSS > 0% BSS >30% BSS (p<0.05). Final BW, semen volume, initial fructose, scrotal length (SL) and scrotal circumference (SC) were greater in 15% BSS diet than 0 and 30% BSS diets. Semen pH and color, sperm progressive motility, viability and abnormalities, and live spermatozoa were not affected by diets. Whereas testosterone level was greater in 0 and 15% BSS diets, libido was lower in 30% BSS diet. Final BW was positively correlated with SC (p=0.030; r = 0.510) and SL (p = 0.048; r = 0.472). It was concluded that up to 30% biodegraded sugarcane scrapings can be used in a complete diet for bucks without negatively impacting final body weight and semen quality, though 15% BSS was more impactful and recommended. Simple Summary: The current study identified average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), feed-to-gain ratio (F/G), blood Na+, K+, Cl− concentrations, and serum K+ and uric acid (UA) concentrations as sensitive indicators for determining the ideal level of sodium (Na) or chlorine (Cl) in a corn–soybean meal diet for chickens from 22 to 42 d of age. The dietary Na or Cl content of 0.12% in the corn–soybean meal diet was recommended to satisfy all the aforementioned metabolic needs related to Na or Cl. The objective of this study was to assess the ideal dietary Na or Cl level for chickens from 22 to 42 d of age, utilizing a corn–soybean meal diet that maintains a 1:1 ratio of Na to Cl. At 22 d of age, a total of 288 male broilers of Arbor Acres were selected and randomly divided into one of six treatments. Each treatment contained eight replicates, with six chicks in each replicate. The control chicks were given a basic diet including 0.02% Na and 0.07% Cl without added Na or Cl, while the birds in other treatments were given diets containing different Na or Cl levels (0.13%, 0.19%, 0.25%, 0.31%, and 0.37%). With increasing dietary Na or Cl levels, linear (p < 0.0001) and quadratic (p < 0.0001) increases occurred in ADG, ADFI, and average daily water consumption, while F/G exhibited a linear (p < 0.0001) and quadratic (p < 0.0001) decrease from 22 to 42 d of age in broilers. Linear (p < 0.02) and quadratic increases (p < 0.03) were found in the heart indicator, serum Cl− concentrations, and blood Na+ and Cl− concentrations, whereas the kidney indicator, blood K+ concentrations, and serum K+, UA, and glucose (GLU) concentrations showed a linear (p < 0.04) and quadratic (p < 0.004) decrease with an increase in dietary Na or Cl levels. The excreta water content, liver indicator, and jejunal crypt depth also showed a linear increase (p < 0.02). The ideal levels of dietary Na or Cl were estimated to be 0.07% to 0.12%, based on the most suitable broken-line and asymptotic models (p ≤ 0.0002) using those sensitive indicators mentioned above. Corn grain with a high phosphorus (P) content (mainly in the form of phytate-P) may need to be processed to improve the digestibility of nutrients for young calves. Processing corn grains can improve the accessibility of phytate-P to the rumen enzymes and increase the bioavailability of P, which benefits the growth and development of calves. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of feeding starter diets with steam-flaked corn (SFC) compared with ground corn (GC) with 2 P contents of 0.4% and 0.7% DM basis on intake, growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites and urinary purine derivatives (PD) in dairy calves. A total of 48 female Holstein dairy calves (3 d old; average initial weight 39.7 ± 3.9 kg) were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments (12 calves/treatment) in a randomized complete block design. The treatment groups were: (1) a starter diet of GC with 0.4% P (GC-0.4P); (2) a starter diet of GC with 0.7% P (GC-0.7P); (3) a starter diet of SFC with 0.4% P (SFC-0.4P); (4) a starter diet of SFC with 0.7% P (SFC-0.7P). Calves received 6 L/d of transition milk on d 2 to 3 and 5 L/d of whole milk on d 4 to 30, which was increased to 7 L/d on d 31 to 45, then decreased to 5 L/d on d 46 to 60 and reduced to a single feeding of 2 L on d 61 to 62. All calves had free access to starter feed and water. All calves were weaned on d 63 and remained in the study until d 83. Rumen fluid samples were collected on d 38 (preweaning) and d 76 (postweaning). Blood samples were collected on d 40 and 80 and urine samples were collected on 4 consecutive days from d 79 to 82 to analyze urinary excretion of PD. The phytate-P content ranged from 0.23 to 0.17 for GC and SFC, respectively. In particular, the interaction between corn processing method and P content showed that the SFC-0.7P diets had a greater intake of starter feed during the pre- and postweaning periods compared with the other experimental groups. In addition, calves fed the SFC-0.7P diet had greater ADG, BW, withers height at weaning, better OM digestibility, higher blood BHB levels, and higher microbial protein synthesis compared with all other groups. Feeding the SFC diet also resulted in improved feed efficiency, improved P digestibility, and a tendency toward a lower rumen pH, albeit with a tendency toward an increase in blood glucose concentration during the preweaning period. In addition, the inclusion of 0.7% P to the starter diet resulted in increased fiber digestibility and a slight improvement in growth performance, which was particularly evident in hip height. Overall, the inclusion of SFC in the calf starter diet, especially in combination with a 0.7% DM basis P supplement, improved growth performance and nutrient utilization in dairy calves compared with GC. Context: Moringa oleifera leaves present enormous potential as an alternative feedstuff for laying hens. The utilisation of the leaves can be improved by exogenous enzymes owing to the presence of non-starch polysaccharides and phytate. Aims: This study evaluated the influence of Moringa oleifera leaf meal (MOL) in diets supplemented with xylanase and phytase on laying hen performance and egg quality at peak production. Methods: In total, 288 Dekalb White laying hens (32 weeks old) were distributed in a completely randomised design, following a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement (with or without MOL × 4 enzyme supplementations). Each treatment comprised six repetitions, each containing six hens. The control diet was based on ground corn and soybean meal, and the treatment diets were supplemented with 5% MOL, followed by three enzyme additives (xylanase, phytase and a xylanase + phytase blend). Key results: The enzyme supplementation in MOL diets positively influenced egg production (P = 0.012), egg weight (P = 0.021) and egg mass (P = 0.009). The birds offered xylanase-supplemented diets had higher feed intakes (P = 0.015) than did those fed other diets. Moringa oleifera increased the albumen height (P < 0.001) and Haugh unit (P < 0.001), whereas MOL and phytase improved eggshell thickness (P < 0.001) and the candling score (P = 0.049), compared with treatments without phytase supplementation. MOL and enzyme supplementation improved yolk colour intensity (L, A and R parameters) and decreased plasma total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol concentrations. The inclusion of 5% MOL in diets did not impair laying performance. However, when MOL diets were supplemented with exogenous enzymes, there was an increase in egg weight. Conclusions: MOL can be included at 5% in layer diets without affecting performance. When used in combination with xylanase and phytase, they improve performance, intensify yolk colour, and improve shell thickness, candling score, as well as serum biochemical profile. Implications: These findings suggest that the combination of dietary MOL + xylanase + phytase can improve performance and egg quality in laying hens at peak production. The use of alternative foods, as well as additives that improve the use of these foods for birds, is an area of study that is constantly growing owing to the constant search for ingredients that make feed cheaper. This study aimed to determine the effects of whole and steam-flaked corn supplementation on the feed intake, serum parameters, and reproductive performance of dairy ewes. A total of 48 ewes (at the end of their lactation period; 57 ± 1.3 kg body weight, BW; 2.69 ± 0.19 body condition score, BCS) were divided into three treatment groups (16 animals per group): the control group (C), which was fed with alfalfa hay and corn silage; the whole-corn group (WC), which was fed with alfalfa hay, corn silage, and whole corn; and the steam-flaked corn group (FC), which was fed with alfalfa hay, corn silage, and steam-flaked corn. The study was conducted for 15 d before ram introduction and for 30 d during the mating in the breeding season. The WC group had higher dry matter (DM), metabolizable energy (ME), and starch intake values than the FC group (P<0.0001). The BW and BCS values were increased in the groups supplemented with whole corn and steam-flaked corn (P≤0.05). The lambing rate was higher in ewes from the WC and FC groups (P≤0.05). Whole and steam-flaked corn supplementation did not affect the non-return ratio or litter size (P>0.05). The serum glucose concentration was similar among the groups, whereas the serum urea concentration increased with either whole or steam-flaked corn supplementation (P≤0.05). The objective was to evaluate the intake, digestibility, and feeding behavior of sheep receiving diets based on marandu grass silage (MGS) with different levels of dehydrated brewery residue (DBR) inclusion and different types of concentrates. Sixteen sheep (30 ± 1.46 kg and 12 months old) were distributed in a randomized block experimental design. The treatments were: MGS containing 10% DBR + concentrate (100% corn); MGS containing 10% DBR + concentrate (50% corn and 50% rice bran); MGS containing 30% DBR + concentrate (100% corn); MGS containing 30% DBR + concentrate (50% corn and 50% rice bran), with 4 replicates per treatment. The experimental period lasted 21 days. Regardless of the concentrate used, diets containing MGS + 30% DBR provided the animals with higher intakes and digestibility of dry matter (DM) and nutrients, water intake, and urinary pH (p < 0.05). Longer feeding and rumination times and periods, and shorter idle times, feeding efficiency of DM, feeding and rumination efficiency of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and intakes of DM and NDF per meal were shown by sheep-fed diets containing MGS + 10% DBR (p < 0.05). The use of 100% corn concentrate also resulted in lower rumination efficiency of NDF and a higher number of mericic chews associated with MGS + 10% DBR (p < 0.05). Diets containing MGS + 30% DBR and concentrate (50% corn + 50% rice bran) resulted in shorter rumination and total chewing times (in min/kg/NDF) (p < 0.05). Background: Addressing the shortage of high-quality protein resources, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with different levels of enzymolysis-fermentation compound protein feed (EFCP) in the diets of growing-finishing pigs, focusing on growth performance, nutrients digestibility, carcass traits, and meat quality. Methods: Sixty DLY (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) pigs with an initial body weight of 42.76 ± 2.05 kg were assigned to 5 dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial design. These dietary treatments included a corn-soybean meal diet (CON), untreated compound protein feed (UCP) substitution 50% (U50) and 100% SBM (U100) diets, and EFCP substitution 50% (EF50) and 100% SBM (EF100) diets. Each treatment had 6 pens (replicates) with 2 pigs per pen, and the experiment lasted 58 d, divided into phase I (1–28 d) and phase II (29–58 d). Following phase I, only the CON, U50, and EF50 groups were continued for phase II, each with 5 replicate pens. On d 59, a total of 15 pigs (1 pig/pen, 5 pens/treatment) were euthanized. Results: During phase I, the EF50 group had a higher average daily gain (ADG) in pigs (P < 0.05) compared to the CON group, whereas the U50 group did not have a significant difference. As the substitution ratio of UCP and EFCP increased in phase I, there was a noticeable reduction in the final body weight and ADG (P < 0.05), along with an increase in the feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) (P < 0.05). In phase II, there were no significant differences in growth performance among the treatment groups, but EF50 increased the apparent digestibility of several nutrients (including dry matter, crude protein, crude fiber, acid detergent fiber, ash, gross energy) compared to U50. The EF50 group also exhibited significantly higher serum levels of neuropeptide Y and ghrelin compared to the CON and U50 groups (P < 0.05). Moreover, the EF50 group had higher carcass weight and carcass length than those in the CON and U50 groups (P < 0.05), with no significant difference in meat quality. Conclusions: The study findings suggest that replacing 50% SBM with EFCP during the growing-finishing period can improve the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and carcass traits of pigs without compromising meat quality. Simple Summary: The use of alternative feed sources such as Chlorella vulgaris in diets for birds, particularly for laying hens, has been gaining attention due to its potential benefits. This study evaluates how different dietary levels of Chlorella vulgaris affect the productive performance and physical quality of eggs from laying hens. The results indicated that the incorporation of Chlorella vulgaris in the diets of the hens had a limited impact on performance parameters and positively influenced egg quality and yolk color. Chlorella vulgaris (CV) is a microalga with considerable nutritional value, containing high levels of protein, carotenoids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have the potential to positively influence the productive performance and egg quality of laying hens. CV emerges as a more sustainable ingredient than soybean meal (SBM) as it can be produced locally and with fewer inputs. In this regard, a study was conducted with 48 H&N Brown Nick strain laying hens, at 19 weeks of age, over a period of 16 weeks. The hens were divided into four treatments, with 12 replicates each. The treatments consisted of providing four different diets: a control diet based on corn and SBM without the inclusion of CV, and three other diets with partial substitution of SBM by 2.5, 5, and 10% of CV. The results showed that the inclusion of CV in the diets did not significantly affect feed intake, feed conversion ratio, or egg production (p > 0.05). In addition, moderate CV levels increased egg weight, while higher levels reduced it. Haugh units, yolk index, albumen index, egg surface area, specific density, and translucency were not affected (p > 0.05), while shell index and shell thickness were lower in the groups that received the CV (p < 0.0001). Yolk color improved significantly with increasing CV levels (p < 0.0001), with darker, more intensely colored yolks at higher CV concentrations. The results of this study suggest that the incorporation of CV in the diet of laying hens had a limited impact on performance parameters. In addition, CV supplementation can positively influence egg quality and yolk color, although careful consideration of optimal levels is necessary to avoid negative effects on other parameters. The placenta plays a crucial role in nutrient transport and waste exchange between the dam and fetus, sustaining fetal growth. While the positive effects of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25-OH-D3) on animal performance have been reported, its impact on placental function remains largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of supplementing 25-OH-D3 in the diet of primiparous sows on reproductive performance, antioxidant capacity, placental oxidative stress, nutrient transport, and inflammatory response during mid-to-late gestation. A total of 45 healthy Landrace × Yorkshire primiparous sows on day 60 of gestation were selected and randomly allocated to three treatment groups based on body weight and backfat thickness: the control group (corn-soybean meal basal diet), the VD3 group (basal diet + 2000 IU VD3), and the 25-OH-D3 group (basal diet + 50 μg/kg 25-OH-D3). The results demonstrated that supplementation with 25-OH-D3 in the diet enhanced sows' average litter weight and birth weight during mid-to-late gestation. Additionally, plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations in sows significantly decreased in the VD3 and 25-OH-D3 groups (p < 0.05). Furthermore, lower gene expressions of placental HO-1, GPX2, IL-8, and IL-6 were found in the VD3 or 25-OH-D3 groups (p < 0.05 or p < 0.10), while higher gene expressions of GLUT1 and SNAT2 in the placenta of sows were observed in the VD3 and 25-OH-D3 groups, respectively (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the supplementation of VD3 and 25-OH-D3 in the diet of sows can improve their plasma oxidative stress status, enhance placental antioxidant capacity and nutrient transport, and reduce placental inflammatory responses, with more pronounced improvements in sow performance observed in sows fed diets supplemented with 25-OH-D3. This study aimed to evaluate the intake, digestibility, ingestive behaviour, productive performance, rumen fermentation and carcass yield of lambs fed diets with Parkia platycephala pods (PP) replacing ground corn. For this, twenty-eight castrated male lambs (18.34 ± 4.81 kg, 120 days of age), were distributed in randomised blocks with 4 treatments and 7 replicates. Four diets were formulated replacing ground corn with PP (0, 33, 66, and 100%) on a roughage: concentrate ratio of 30:70 on a dry matter basis. The feedlot period lasted for 60 days, and the animals were slaughtered consecutively. The replacing of ground corn with PP reduced the intakes of ether extract and metabolisable energy, digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, neutral detergent fibre, total digestible nutrients, isovalerate, and omental + mesenteric fat, while it increased the digestibility of non-fibrous carbohydrates, carcass finishing, and the yields of rumen, reticulum, and omasum (p < 0.05). A quadratic effect was observed for the time of chews per rumen bolus, number of rumination chews per day, number of rumination chews per bolus, and number of rumination chews per minute, propionate (p = 0.002), butyrate (p < 0.01) and total short chain fatty acids (SCFA) (p < 0.05) according to the increase in PP levels replacing ground corn in diets offered to lambs. The rumen pH was reduced and the NH3-N increased according to the evaluation period (p < 0.05). The highest concentration of total SCFA was observed in the collection carried out at 09 h (p < 0.05). Simple Summary: The non-phytate phosphorous (NPP) requirements of laying hens vary significantly at different stages of growth and development due to their differing physiological characteristics. Non-linear models and factorial methods are often used to estimate the nutritional requirements of animals at different stages of growth. In this study, the NPP requirement of Chinese Jing Tint 6 layer chicks from hatch to d 42 was evaluated using both a non-linear model and factorial method. The non-linear models were fitted based on the criterion of growth performance, serum biochemical parameters, bone characteristics, and phosphorus utilization. The factorial methods were used to classify the requirements of the layer chicks into growth requirements and maintenance requirements. Based on the current results, it was recommended that dietary 0.367% and 0.439% NPP benefit from the best P utilization of 1–14 and 15–42 d birds, respectively. By predicting the nutritional needs of poultry at different stages as accurately as possible, the model can help formulate more scientific and reasonable feed formulation. We aimed to estimate the non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) requirements of Chinese Jing Tint 6 layer chicks. We randomly allocated 720 birds to five treatments with six cages of 24 birds each, feeding them a corn–soybean diet containing 0.36%, 0.41%, 0.46%, 0.51%, and 0.56% NNP. The results showed that the body weight gain (BWG), tibial length, and apparent total tract digestibility coefficients (ATTDC) of P were affected (p < 0.05) by dietary NPP level. A quadratic broken-line analysis (p < 0.05) of BWG indicated that the optimal NPP for birds aged 1–14 d was 0.411%. Similarly, 0.409% of NPP met tibial growth needs. However, 0.394% of NPP was optimal for P utilization according to the ATTDC criterion. For 15–42 d birds, 0.466% NPP, as estimated by the BWG criterion, was sufficient for optimal growth without decreasing P utilization. Using the factorial method, NPP requirements were calculated as 0.367% and 0.439%, based on the maintenance factors and BWG for 1–14 and 15–42 d birds, respectively, to maintain normal growth. Combining the non-linear model with the factorial method, this study recommends dietary NPP levels of 0.367% and 0.439% for 1–14 and 15–42 d birds, respectively, to optimize P utilization without affecting performance. Effects of dietary non-starch polysaccharides-degrading enzymes (NSPase) and phytase complex on performance, carcass, bone minerals, litter, and gene expression (IGF, IL-1β, IL-10, TLR-4, CPT1A) were determined in broilers fed corn-soybean nutrient-reduced diets. Totally, 1200 Ross-308 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned into 4 treatments, with 6 replicates of 50 birds each; (G1) Control group received nutrient- adequate diet without enzymes supplementation; (G2) received energy-reduced diet (-100 kcal/kg) with NSPase (100 g/ton Econase®) + phytase enzymes (100 g/ton Quantum Blue®; 5,000 FTU/g); (G3) received energy-reduced diet (-80 kcal/kg) with NSPase (250 g/ton Enziver®) + phytase enzymes (100 g/ton Phytonex®; 5,000 FTU/g); (G4) received as G3 diet with a 0.5% decrease in crude protein (CP). For all energy-reduced diets, the nutritional matrix of phytase with reductions of phosphorus (P) (0.15%), and calcium (Ca) (0.165%) was considered. Dietary NSPase and phytase supplementation to a low-energy diet significantly (P<0.05) enhanced body weights, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and litter quality (lowered nitrogen, phosphorous, and calcium excretion in broiler manure), with constant bone mineralization. No significant effects (P>0.05) on carcass or blood biochemistry. Energy and CP-reduced diet showed better feed intake, immune organ weights, and mineral bioavailability by decreasing Alkaline phosphatase activity. Moreover, upregulated gene expression of IGF-1 in muscles, inflammatory cytokines (IL-1B and IL-10), immune-related genes (TLR-4) in the liver, and (CPT1A) responsible for energy production. This study aimed to determine the effects of dietary rumen-protected glucose (RPG) supplementation on feedlot steer performance, blood metabolite, carcass characteristics, and meat quality. Twelve Kamphaeng Saen steers were used with mean ± standard deviation for age 27.9 ± 6.9 months and initial body weight of 471 ± 3.03 kg. Steers were randomly assigned to either a control diet (CON) or a diet supplemented with 200 g/head/d of RPG by top-dressing at each feeding daily (RPG). Both groups were fed the concentrate diet, consisting of 14% crude protein and using rice straw as a roughage source in a ratio of 75:25. After being fed for 120 d, the steers were slaughtered. The feedlot performance, ruminal fermentation, blood biochemical parameters, carcass characteristics, and meat quality were evaluated. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the dry matter intake, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio, gain feed ratio (G:F), blood metabolite, and carcass characteristics between the CON and RPG groups. The marbling score, fat and protein contents of the longissimus dorsi muscle of the steers fed the RPG diet were significantly (p<0.05) greater than those for the steers fed the CON diet. In addition, the cooking loss and shear force of the steers fed the RPG diet were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those for the steers fed the CON diet. Background: Betaine is a protein found in shellfish, spinach and wheat bran. Betaine's main physiological function is to act as a methyl donor and an osmolyte. Betaine also functions as an osmolyte, ensuring that the avian's cellular water and ion balance are maintained. It may protect a variety of intestinal bacteria against osmotic changes resulting in increased microbial fermentation activity. Adding betaine to chicken diets has been shown to improve nutritional digestibility and lower abdominal fat weight. Methods: A total of two hundred and seventy day-old commercial broiler chicks were randomly allotted to nine treatments of six equal replicates with 5 chicks each (9 × 6 × 5=270). Nine experimental isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets consisting of a control diet (CD), 25% and 50% methionine deficient diet and with graded levels of betaine (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% levels) were formulated and fed to chicks from 1 to 42 days of age. Result: The results of the study revealed that supplementation of betaine to broiler diets deficient in methionine at 25% and 50% resulted in better performance with (p<0.05) higher body weight gain and better FCR, higher percentages of livability, carcass yield, total edible parts, breast yield and breast meat while those of heart and abdominal fat were decreased but relative weights of giblets, liver and gizzard were not affected compared with their control counterparts. Simple Summary: The main objective of this research is to find an effective way to reduce the reliance of broiler chickens on soybean meal. ZBM is a byproduct obtained by squeezing Zanthoxylum bungeanum, which contains high levels of protein, fat, and minerals. Currently, there is no existing research on the application of ZBM in broiler chickens. Therefore, this experiment aims to validate the effectiveness of using ZBM as a substitute for soybean meal in broiler chicken feed. The validation process involves two parts: in vitro biomimetic digestion experiments and broiler production experiments. The results demonstrated that the utilization of 5–10% ZBM led to notable enhancements in the growth and development of broilers. Additionally, it was observed that digestibility and utilization of nutrients were increased. Based on our research findings, we strongly believe that ZBM has the potential to be a suitable replacement for soybean meal in broiler feed. Zanthoxylum bungeanum seed meal (ZBM), a novel plant protein raw material, has shown promising potential in enhancing the growth of broiler chickens as a substitute for soybean meal (SBM) in feed. In the artificial digestive experiment of vitro experiments, the digestibility of ZBM and SBM were assessed using the SDS-III Single Stomach Animal Biometric Digestion System. Subsequently, 180 1-day old AA chicks were divided into three groups for in vivo experiments: corn–soybean-meal-based diet (CON group); ZBM replacing 5% soybean meal in the basal diet (ZBM-1 group); ZBM replacing 10% soybean meal in the basal diet (ZBM-2 group). The experiment period lasted for 42 days. Compared to SBM, ZBM demonstrated higher crude protein content, dry matter digestibility, and extracorporeal digestible protein. Compared with the CON group, the broilers in the ZBM-2 group showed improved ADG and ADFI during the 1–21 d, 22–42 d, and 1–42 d periods (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the ZBM groups exhibited significant increases in slaughter performance compared with the CON group (p < 0.05). The substitution of ZBM for SBM also leads to a significant reduction in serum enzyme indicators (p < 0.05). Additionally, the lipoprotein and total cholesterol of the ZBM groups were significantly lower than those of the CON group (p < 0.05). Substituting SBM with ZBM significantly enhances the activity of superoxide dismutase and the content of immunoglobulin G in broiler serum, while reducing the content of malondildehyde (p < 0.05). The ZBM groups showed significantly higher utilization of dry matter, crude protein, and energy compared with the CON group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the study confirmed that the substitution of SBM with 5–10% ZBM in broiler diets has a significant positive effect on growth, development, antioxidant capacity, immune function, and nutrient utilization. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of early castration and eucalyptus oil (EUC) supplementation on dry matter intake (DMI), growth performance, and immune response of Holstein calves. Fifty-six male Holstein calves 52 d old and with an initial body weight (BW) of 63.5 ± 5.27 kg were used. The animals were blocked by BW and randomly assigned into 1 of the 4 treatment groups in a randomized complete block design with a 2 (no castration vs. castration) × 2 (without vs. with EUC) factorial arrangement of treatments. The treatments were (1) uncastrated calves fed without EUC, (2) uncastrated calves fed 0.5 g/d EUC (EUC group), (3) castrated calves (steers) fed without EUC (castrated group), and (4) steers fed with 0.5 g/d EUC (castrated + EUC). The experiment was 8 wk long, including pre- and postweaning (weaned at 72 d). The EUC × castrated interactions were not significant for DMI, growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and immune response. Castration did not affect the DMI, final BW, average daily gain (ADG), or feed efficiency, except that the ADG was greater for bull calves than for steers at postweaning. Supplementation with EUC increased DMI pre- and postweaning and increased the ADG of weaned calves. Digestibility in the total digestive tract was not affected by castration (except for organic matter digestibility), whereas adding EUC improved the digestibility of dry matter, acid detergent fiber, and crude protein. Blood concentration of IL-6 at d 94 was decreased by feeding EUC. These results indicate that the EUC could be fed to either intact or castrated dairy calves to promote growth and health postweaning; castration before weaning may reduce ADG and cause inflammatory stress without affecting feed intake or feed efficiency. Simple Summary: There has been increased cost pressure with the escalating prices of maize, and as such, wheat has gained attention as a potential alternative in animal husbandry. Wheat within non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs) with anti-nutritional components is worth our attention. Xylanase, as one of the non-starch polysaccharide enzymes, induces a positive influence on the growth performance, intestinal health, and microbiota of broilers. Feeding them a wheat-based diet with xylanase increased the activities of duodenal endogenous enzymes and enhanced the physical barrier of the intestines. Moreover, broilers fed xylanase through a wheat-based diet showed modulated cecal microflora; increased propionic acid produced by specific bacteria; and a changed serum metabolome, including histidine, cysteine, methionine, and other amino acid pathways. Based on the present study, xylanase supplementation is one potential high-wheat diet that could replace corn, playing an ideal role in poultry production. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different levels of xylanase supplementation in a wheat-based diet on growth performance, short-chain fatty acids, intestinal health, microbial composition, and serum metabolism. A total of 1200 male chicks were randomly assigned to four wheat-based diet treatments: Group C (adding 0 mg/kg of xylanase), Group L (adding 50 mg/kg of xylanase), Group M (adding 100 mg/kg of xylanase), and Group H (adding 150 mg/kg of xylanase). The experiment lasted for 56 days. The results indicated that Group H broilers experienced a decreased feed-to-gain ratio throughout the study period. Additionally, dietary supplementation with xylanase led to an increase in the physical barrier, as indicated by increased VH and VH/CD in the gut (p < 0.05). Furthermore, levels of D-lactic acid and endotoxin were reduced. Xylanase supplementation also increased the abundance of Muc-2, ZO-1, and Occludin (p < 0.05). Moreover, xylanase supplementation enhanced the activity of sucrase and maltase in the duodenum (p < 0.05), which may be attributable to the upregulation of the abundance of SI and MGA (p < 0.05). Furthermore, xylanase addition promoted propionic acid produced by specific bacteria, such as Phascolarctobacterium, and influenced the microbial composition to some extent, promoting intestinal health. Additionally, 150 mg/kg of xylanase supplementation increased the amino acid, peptide, and carbohydrate content and upregulated the metabolism of amino acids related to histidine, cysteine, methionine, and other pathways (p < 0.05). These findings suggest adequate xylanase supplementation can enhance nutritional digestibility and absorption, improve growth performance, stimulate endogenous enzyme activity, optimize intestinal morphology and barrier function, and positively influence acid-producing bacteria and amino acid metabolic pathways. Corn silk is a waste product when harvesting corn, but it contains many bioactive compounds. This research characterized and assessed the antioxidant bioactivity of compounds isolated from corn silk. Two different biological fermentation processes were compared: Solid-state fermentation (SSF) and submerged fermentation (SmF). Fresh corn silk (Zea mays L.) from both sweet corn and feed corn were fermented separately with various microorganisms (Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus sp. and Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Biological compounds were identified using LC-MS/MS. The extract was then tested for total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC). Next, the extract was tested for xanthine oxidase inhibition and antioxidant inhibition using the ABTS method. Potential contamination with the heavy metals As, Pb, and Hg was checked. The results show that fermented corn silk extract contains numerous bioactive compounds and amino acids. Among the different extract process variations, the highest TPC and TFC were 6.1 ± 0.7 µg GAE/g dry wt. and 68.3 ± 1.1 µg QE/g dry wt., respectively, and the highest xanthine oxidase inhibition was 76.5 ± 6.4 %. The above highest results were obtained using SmF of sweet corn for 60 days. In contrast, the highest antioxidant activity of 66.9 % was found using SSF of sweet corn for 20 days. Neither sweet corn nor feed corn were found to contain heavy metal ions. In summary, fermented corn silk extract samples contain numerous bioactive compounds, including both flavonoid and phenolic compounds, and the extract demonstrates antioxidant activity. Human feeding patterns have been reconstructed in Archaeology by analysing either oral pathology or stable isotope ratios in human skeletal remains. However, no clear agreement has been developed between these two methodologies. The main objective of this study is to determine if we can establish a link between them when analysing a population with a hyper-specialized diet, in this case marine resources (and millet/maize). To reach this goal we developed a conjoined multi-isotope analysis using collagen and bioapatite (δ13Ccol, δ15Ncol and δ13Ccar) and a detailed study of oral health (caries, antemortem loss, periapical lesions, periodontal disease, calculus, and wear). All available skeletons with at least one preserved tooth from two cemeteries of the medieval town of Pontevedra (n = 34) were studied. The buried individuals belonged to the guild of fishers and artisans, professions which were dominant among the families of medieval Pontevedra. A detailed FTIR-ATR study of extracted bone bioapatite showed a high correlation between bioapatite carbonate content, carbonate typical vibrations, and FTIR-ATR indices related to bone diagenesis, which is in line with previous research. No significant correlations were found with bioapatite yield and isotopic composition (δ13Ccar and Δ13C), ruling out possible diagenetic effects. The diet was based on marine fish protein with contributions of millets (e.g., δ13Ccar -11.9 ± 1.8‰) that seems to be slightly higher in individuals linked to artisanal guilds. The oral pathology study shows severe dental wear from an early age (Grade 2–4 in permanent dentition for 20% of infants and 60% of juveniles in M1), as well as moderate-high presence of caries in permanent dentition (64%, 22/34) and dental calculus (72%, 24/33). Both the oral pathology and the isotopic signal differ from that observed in other areas of the Iberian Peninsula. This study points to the existence of connections between findings of the two methodologies, and specifically an association between intense dental wear and high consumption of marine resources and millet. It was aimed to evaluate the use of cottonseed cake (CSC) as a source of physically effective neutral detergent fibre (peNDF) to replace corn silage (CS) in diet of feedlot-finished cattle. The design used was completely randomised, with 2 treatments (30% CSC and 30% CS) and 12 replications. There was interaction between fibre source and nutrient in the material retained in the Penn State Particle Separator. The highest concentrations (P = 0.0001) of peNDF and the in vitro digestibility of peNDF (DpeNDF) were for CSC. There was a higher (p < 0.05) dry matter intake (DMI) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) intake (NDFI) by the animals on the CSC diet. The CSC-fed steers showed higher (P = 0.0001) final body weight (BW) and total weight gain. The steers fed CSC showed a longer (P = 0.0001) feeding time, feed efficiency, and lower rumination time (P = 0.0001) and rumination efficiency (P = 0.0001). There were positive correlations between the variables: rumination time × intake, rumination time × NDFI and peNDF × DpeNDF. It was observed that there was a negative correlation between the variables: rumination time × peNDF, rumination time × DpeNDF, NDFI × peNDF, and NDFI × DpeNDF. Malnutrition, a significant global health concern, necessitates innovative solutions to enhance food nutritional profiles sustainably. This study focused on augmenting the nutrient content of traditional cereal flours, specifically corn (Ma) and millet (Mi), by incorporating edible insects, Macrotermes subhyalinus (MS) and Cirina butyrospermi (CB) known for their high protein, vitamin and mineral levels. The research aimed to create fortified flour formulations by adding these insects at various proportions (20%, 22.5% and 25%), thus addressing nutritional deficiencies common in staple diets. The study employed a comprehensive methodological approach incorporating biochemical analyses to measure protein, lipid content, pH and vitamin C levels in 16 distinct flour blends. These measures provided a basis for evaluating the nutritional enhancement achieved through insect incorporation. Additionally, nutrient density calculations and statistical analyses including analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests were conducted to assess the overall nutritional value and identify significant differences among formulations. Results demonstrated a marked improvement in the nutritional quality of cereal flours with insect addition. Formulations MiMS25 (75% Millet + 25% MS) and MiCB25 (75% Millet + 25% CB) exhibited the highest mineral content, with ash values of 3.69 ± 1.00% and 2.60 ± 0.28%, respectively. Protein levels were significantly increased in MaCB22.5 (77.5% Corn + 22.5% CB) and MiCB25 showing concentrations of 18.78 ± 0.20% and 18.66 ± 0.10%. Furthermore, the inclusion of MS notably enhanced lipid content, particularly in MiMS25 which displayed an energy value of 451.19 kcal. Among the tested blends, MaCB22.5 was identified as the most nutritionally promising with a nutrient density score of 0.255 indicating a balanced and improved nutritional profile. This study underscores the potential of integrating edible insects into cereal flours as a sustainable strategy to combat malnutrition. Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the safety of transgenic maize CC-2 through a 90-day feeding study in Sprague-Dawley rats. Methods Transgenic maize CC-2 and its parental counterpart maize Zhengdan 958 were respectively incorporated into diets at levels of 70%, 35% or 17.5% (w/w) and were administrated to rats (n = 10/sex/group) for 90 days. An additional control group of rats (n = 10/sex/group) were fed with the AIN93 breeding diet. All formulated diets were nutritionally balanced. Results There was no death and obvious toxic symptom in all rats. Food consumption, body weight, total food consumption rate, hematology, urinalysis, organ weight and organ coefficient were comparable between transgenic groups and the corresponding dose parental groups. There were significant differences of food consumption rate on some timepoint between high dose transgenic group and high dose parental group; male rats in high dose transgenic group showed significantly higher ALT/AST than high dose parental group on the middle or end of the experiment; but the differences showed no biological significance. There were no significant differences of other serum biochemistry parameters and pathological changes. This study investigates the impact of varying concentrate levels in the diets of Angus beef cattle on their performance, nutrient digestion, and metabolism during the growth (7 to 12 months) and fattening (13 to 30 months) phases. Fifteen Angus steers were continuously fed and divided into low-concentrate (L) and high-concentrate (H) groups based on the fattening period and dietary formulations. Throughout each 9-week trial phase, a comprehensive range of parameters was systematically measured, including dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), gain-to-feed ratio (G/F), blood parameters, rumen fluid composition, and microbial diversity. In the fattening phases, an increase in concentrate levels resulted in a significant rise in the cattle's DMI. Although there was a minor increase in ADG compared to the growing phases, this increase was not statistically significant. The efficiency of nitrogen (N) utilization in the cattle decreased, accompanied by a significant reduction in the apparent digestibility of nutrients. Ruminal fermentation produced more energy substances; however, there was a notable decrease in the abundance of fiber-decomposing microbes (such as the NK4A214_group, Ruminococcus, Papillibacter, and Acetitomaculum) and a significant increase in the abundance of starch-degrading microbes (including Bacteroidota and Prevotellaceae). Additionally, there was a significant reduction in the abundance of immune system-related functional pathways. Simple Summary: Post-weaning diarrhea is a critical health and welfare issue in swine production systems as the transition from sow milk to solid feed is a stressful event that is accompanied by microbiome community disturbances that can require antimicrobial treatment or other individualized dietary interventions. This study investigated how feeding sows live yeast during gestation and lactation affects the growth and microbiomes of their offspring in the post-weaning period, without directly feeding live yeast to offspring. The offspring of yeast-fed sows displayed altered growth performance and gut microbiome composition when compared to offspring born to sows fed a control diet. The microbiomes of offspring born to yeast-fed sows contained more taxa associated with beneficial fermentative processes, indicating that the manipulation of offspring microbiomes through maternal diet is a viable method for conferring beneficial microbiome characteristics to offspring in swine systems. The supplementation of live yeast in pig diets is common in the post-weaning phase due to its prebiotic and probiotic effects, but little is known regarding the potential of feeding live yeast to gestating or lactating sows for transferring such benefits to their offspring through maternal programming. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of live yeast supplementation in sow diets during late gestation and lactation on their reproductive performance and its impact on offspring performance and gut microbiomes in the post-weaning period. Three dietary treatments were imposed on 92 mixed-parity sows during late gestation and lactation based upon the inclusion level of live yeast in corn/soybean meal-based diets: Control (0% yeast), Low (0.1% yeast), and High (0.5% yeast). Nursery pigs in the Low group displayed the highest feed intake in the post-weaning period and greater total gain and average daily gain in comparison to pigs in the High group. The gut microbiomes of nursery pigs differed in composition according to maternal dietary treatment groups at days 4 and 28 post weaning, highlighting higher abundances of bacterial genera typically associated with fermentation roles in the gut microbiomes of offspring of yeast-fed sows. These results indicate that the supplementation of live yeast in sow diets, depending on the inclusion level, may result in beneficial performance and specific microbiome traits for their offspring in the post-weaning period. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of a high‐fibre diet on growth performance, nutrients digestibility, intestinal health, and intestinal microbiota composition of growing pigs. Twelve healthy "Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire" castrates (49 ± 1.35 kg) were randomly divided into two groups with six replicates and one pig per replicate. The two diet treatments were fed the basal diet (CON) based on corn and soybean meal and high fibre diet (HF) respectively. The nutritional levels of the two treatments were the same. The experiment lasted 28 days. The results showed that the addition of 16% wheat bran fibre to the diet of growing pigs did not affect growth performance (p > 0.05). Compared with the CON, contents of isobutyric and butyric acid, GSH‐PX and T‐AOC in serum were increased in the HF. It decreased the gross energy digestibility and acetic acid content in feces of growing pigs (p < 0.05), the contents of GSH‐PX and T‐AOC in serum. It decreased the gross energy digestibility and acetic acid content in feces of growing pigs (p < 0.05). Compared with the CON, the Shannon, and Chao1 indexes of the HF were increased (p < 0.05). At the phylum level, the abundance of g_Lactobacillus increased in the HF (p < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed that a total of 18 microbial genera were correlated with antioxidant capacity and volatile fatty acid levels (p < 0.05). In summary, this study showed that adding 16% wheat bran to the diet of growing pigs had no effect on growth performance but helped to improve the richness and stability of intestinal microbiota, promote posterior intestinal fermentation and increase serum antioxidant capacity. Simple Summary: Published data on the influence of corn particle size (PS) and conditioning temperature (CT) on the performance of broilers are limited. Corn provides a high-energy feed ingredient for broiler chicken diets and is usually ground before being incorporated into mash diets. The aim of this present study was to investigate the interactive impacts of corn PS and CT growth performance, carcass traits, intestinal morphology and immune system in broiler chickens. The results showed that the PS and the CT affected the growth performance of broiler chickens, and this issue shows that feed-producing companies should pay attention to the PS of feed mills, especially corn, as well as the CT. This study aimed to investigate the interactions between corn particle size (PS) and conditioning temperature (CT) on the performance, carcass traits, intestinal morphology, and immune responses in broilers fed a corn-soybean meal-based diet. A total of 360 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly allocated into six dietary treatments in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement, consisting of two corn PS (finely ground with geometric mean diameter (GMD) of 357 µm (PSF) vs. coarsely ground corn with GMD of 737 µm (PSC), and three CT [unconditioned (CTU), conditioned at 75 °C (CT75) and 90 °C (CT90)]. Birds were accommodated in 30 pens with five replicates and 12 chicks per each pen. There was no interaction between corn PS and CT on the growth performance and immune response of broilers at any growth phases. However, during the starter (0–10 days) period, the average daily weight gain (ADWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of PSF-fed birds were significantly improved compared to those fed PSC (p < 0.05). During the starter (0–10 days) and grower (11–24 days) periods, increasing the conditioning temperature of corn increased the ADWG, while in the starter phase only the CT75 caused a lower FCR (p < 0.05). Broilers fed PSF corn showed the lowest FCR during the finisher (25–42 days) period compared to those fed PSC (p < 0.05). Conditioning corn at 75 °C reduced FCR during the finisher (25–42 days) period compared to the birds fed CTU and CT90 corn (p < 0.05). In whole experimental periods (1–42 days), PSF and CT75 treatment increased the ADWG compared to the PSC and CTU (p < 0.05). The CT75 treatment improved primary total anti-sheep red blood cell (SRBCs) titer (IgT) and IgM and secondary IgT and IgG responses compared to the other experimental groups (CTU and CT90) (p < 0.05). No significant PS × CT interaction was found on the Newcastle disease (ND) antibody titer of broiler chickens (p > 0.05). Feeding CT75 corn reduced duodenum and jejunum relative lengths compared to the birds fed diets containing CTU corn. Significant PS × CT interactions (p < 0.05) were observed for villus height, villus height to crypt depth, crypt depth, muscle thickness, and absorption surface area of the jejunum. The highest carcass yield was observed in the PSF-CT75 group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of finely ground corn (PSF) conditioned at 75 °C (CT75) was beneficial to growth performance, development of the digestive tract, jejunum histomorphometry and the immune responses of broilers. The objective of the study was to determine the influence that initial BW has on growth performance responses, efficiency of dietary net energy (NE) utilization, and carcass traits in feedlot steers. Charolais×Red Angus steers (n = 70) selected from a larger single-source group were used in a 209-d growing-finishing feedlot experiment. Steers were assigned to two groups based on initial BW (light initial weight, LIW = 273 ± 16.0 kg; heavy initial weight, HIW = 356 ± 14.2 kg) and allotted into 10 pens (n = 7 steers per pen; 5 pens per experimental group) the within pen standard deviation for LIW was from 14.1 kg to 20.9 kg and for HIW was from 13.7 kg to 16.0 kg. Steers were fed a common diet once daily. Experimental data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design with pen as the experimental unit. LIW steers had a greater cumulative HH change (p = 0.04). A treatment × day interaction (p = 0.05) was observed for HH with HIW steers having a greater HH at all time points. Final BW and carcass-adjusted (HCW/0.625) BW were greater for HIW steers by 13.1% and 13.4% respectively (p ≤ 0.01). HIW steers had a greater DMI (p = 0.01) compared to LIW. Cumulative ADG was greater for HIW by 3% (p = 0.04). LIW steers had better feed conversion (p = 0.01). HIW steers had greater (p ≤ 0.05) HCW, marbling scores, and yield grade (YG), with decreased REA/HCW (p = 0.01) compared to LIW. The distribution of USDA Yield Grade was altered by initial BW (p = 0.04). No differences were detected (p ≥ 0.22) for the distribution of Quality grade nor liver abscess prevalence and severity. Regression coefficients did not differ between LIW and HIW for urea space calculations of empty body water, fat, or protein (p ≥ 0.70). A quadratic response was noted for empty body fat (EBF), empty body water (EBH20), and carcass protein (CP). This study investigated the effect of replacing a portion of fish meal with unfermented and/or fermented soybean meal in juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). Four groups of juveniles (initial weight 110.31 ± 3.12 g) in triplicate were fed for 90 days on four different iso‐nitrogen and iso‐lipid diets. The G0 diet comprised 28% fish meal protein (control group). In the other three diets (G1, G2, and G3), 10% of the fish meal protein was replaced with unfermented and/or fermented soybean meal protein. The main results were: Compared with G0, the WGR, SGR, CF; the contents of GLU, TP, ALB, T‐CHO, and T‐AOC, the activities of AKP, CAT, SOD, GST, GSH‐PX, O2·‐CR, OH·‐CR, and GSH and the expressions of SOD, GSH‐PX, GST, CAT, and Nrf2 genes of juvenile coho salmon in G3 were significantly (p < 0.05) increased, However, the FCR, HSI, the content of MDA, and the expressions of TNF‐α and IL‐6 genes of juvenile coho salmon in G3 were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased. There was no significant effect (p > 0.05) of diet on their survival rate (SR). In conclusion, the fermented soybean meal in the juvenile coho salmon diet can replace 10% of the fish meal protein. Simple Summary: Due to several factors including persistent drought conditions and the increased occurrence and severity of fire on rangeland, there is an increased need for the use of alternative forages to meet the nutrient requirements of ruminants raised in extensive grazing systems. However, information on the nutritive value of alternative forages like Eragrostis teff as influenced by harvest maturity, and the best supplementation strategies that complement and improve utilization of those forages, is still lacking. Therefore, the present study evaluated the effects of harvest maturity of teff hay (early- compared to late-heading stage of maturity) and supplemental energy sources (corn grain compared to beet pulp at 0.5% of body weight) on nutrient intake and digestibility and nitrogen utilization in beef heifers. Delaying the harvest of teff hay resulted in a decrease in nutrient supply, which was not attenuated by feeding either supplemental corn grain or beet pulp. Nitrogen retention was also negative regardless of harvest maturity, and this potentially indicates that there might be a need to provide both energy and protein supplements to improve nutrient supply and, thus, growth performance when feeding teff hay to beef cattle. The phenological stage of maturity of grasses and supplementation program can impact forage utilization in grazing beef cattle. However, the potential interaction between harvest maturity of Eragrostis tef (teff) hay and energy supplement source was yet to be fully evaluated. Therefore, our objective was to determine the effects of harvest maturity of teff hay and supplemental energy sources on nutrient intake, apparent total-tract nutrient digestion, nitrogen (N) utilization, and ruminal fermentation characteristics in beef heifers. A split-plot design with teff hay harvest maturity as the whole plot and supplemental energy source as the subplot was administered in a three-period (21 d), three × three Latin square design. Six crossbred beef heifers (804 ± 53.6 kg of body weight; BW) were allocated to two harvest maturities (early- (EH]) or late-heading (LH)) and to two supplemental energy sources (no supplement (CON), or rolled corn grain or beet pulp pellet fed at 0.5% of BW). Data were analyzed using SAS. There was no harvest maturity × energy supplement interaction. Although harvest maturity had no impact on total dry matter intake (DMI), crude protein (CP) intake was greater (p < 0.01) for EH than LH heifers. Total intakes of dry (DM) and organic matter (OM) were also greater (p < 0.01) for supplemented than CON heifers, whereas acid detergent fiber (ADF) intake was greater for beet pulp heifers compared to heifers fed the CON diet and supplemental corn grain. Harvest maturity had no impact on ruminal pH. However, mean ruminal pH was lower (p = 0.04), duration pH < 6.2, and molar proportions of butyrate and branched-chain fatty acids were greater (p ≤ 0.049) for heifers fed corn grain compared to CON and beet pulp diets. Heifers fed EH hay had greater (p ≤ 0.02) apparent total-tract DM, OM, CP, NDF, and ADF digestibility than heifers fed LH hay. Although there was no supplemental energy effect on microbial nitrogen (N) flow, it was greater (p < 0.01) for EH than LH heifers. Apparent N retention, which did not differ, was negative across all diets. In summary, delaying the harvest of teff hay from the EH to LH stage of maturity compromised nutrient supply, which was not attenuated by feeding supplemental corn grain and beet pulp at 0.5% of diet DM. Because N retention was negative across harvest maturity, there might be a need to provide both energy and protein supplements to improve growth performance when feeding teff hay to beef cattle. Context. Early weaning is an alternative that may shorten the production time, and improve growth, and carcass quality. Aims. The effects of different weaning ages on growth performance and carcass characteristics of Dorper × Santa Inês lambs were evaluated. Methods. Initially, 33 crossbred lactating ewes Dorper × Santa Inês with initial bodyweight (BW) of 53.16 ± 9.17 kg (mean ± s.d.) were penned individually with their lambs (nine females and 36 males; 6.59 ± 0.30 kg of initial BWand 10 ± 2.22 days of age) 10 days after birth and used in a randomised complete block design (three treatments and 11 blocks). Each pen was individually equipped with a creep feed system for the lambs. The lambs received the initial diet, and the ewes were confined and received a diet with 400 g/kg of roughage and 600 g/kg of concentrate. Lambs were weaned at ages of either 45 days (W45), 60 days (W60) or 75 days (W75). At weaning, the ewes were removed from the pens and the lambs remained in the same pen for 15 days, receiving the initial diet. After 15 days of weaning, only the males continued received the finishing diet until 165 days of life. After the finishing period, the lambs were slaughtered to measure the carcass characteristics. Key results. There was no influence of weaning age on BW, body condition score, dry-matter intake, and milk production and composition of ewes. Additionally, there was no effect of treatments on the lambs' performance. Conclusion. In an intensive production system, weaning at 45, 60, and 75 days provided similar growth performance and carcass characteristics. Implications. Context. Few experiments have demonstrated how alternative fibre sources such as micronised citrus pulp in the diet of sows during pregnancy and lactation can influence the productive and biochemical parameters of the sows. Aims. The aim of the study was to compare different fibre sources fed to sows during gestation for effects on serum biochemical and reproductive parameters, and to determine how these effects may relate to sow and piglet performances. Methods. In total, 220 sows of average initial liveweight 240.72 ± 29.42 kg were allotted to a completely randomised design with four treatments and 55 sows per treatment. The treatments comprised different fibre sources (micronised citrus pulp, soybean hulls and coffee husks) included in the feed, with a maize-soybean-meal-based diet as the control. Productive and biochemical parameters were assessed. Key results. Productive and reproductive performance during gestation and lactation, and litter birth weight, were not influenced (P > 0.05) by treatment. Placental efficiency (g fetus produced/g placenta) was lower (P < 0.05) in sows receiving soybean hulls than coffee husks (4.9 vs 5.4). Control sows presented lower (P < 0.05) stillborn rate than those supplemented with soybean hulls (1.08% vs 2.72%). Blood glucose, creatinine, lactate, triglycerides, total protein, cholesterol and urea were not influenced (P > 0.05) by treatment. Postprandial blood glucose and triglycerides levels were higher (P < 0.05) than preprandial levels, whereas preprandial cholesterol was higher (P < 0.05) than postprandial (67.74 vs 62.51 mg/dL). Conclusion. Diverse fibre sources minimally impacted sow performance; coffee husks emerged as a potentially advantageous choice. Implications. Nutritional strategies to enhance reproductive and productive performance can be developed by incorporating coffee husks, micronised citrus pulp or soybean hulls in sows' feed. A beneficial effect of corn-expressed phytase (CEP) on the growth performance of pigs fed with very low-protein (VLP) diets was previously shown. Little is known whether this improvement is related to alterations in the expression profiles of blood proteins and amino acids (AAs). The objective of this study was to investigate whether supplementation of VLP, low-calcium (Ca), and low-P diets with a CEP would alter the blood AAs and protein expression profiles in pigs. Forty-eight pigs were subjected to one of the following groups (n = 8/group) for 4 weeks: positive control (PC), negative control-reduced protein (NC), NC + low-dose CEP (LD), NC + high-dose CEP (HD), LD with reduced Ca/P (LDR), and HD with reduced Ca/P (HDR). Plasma leucine and phenylalanine concentrations were reduced in NC; however, the LD diet recovered the concentration of these AAs. Serum proteomics analysis revealed that proteins involved with growth regulation, such as selenoprotein P were upregulated while the IGF-binding proteins family proteins were differentially expressed in CEP-supplemented groups. Furthermore, a positive correlation was detected between growth and abundance of proteins involved in bone mineralization and muscle structure development. Simple Summary: The mature Kiko wethers performed satisfactorily in woodlands, whereas the performance of young and growing animals was suboptimal, and they required supplementation. However, information is scant on supplementation strategies for nursing does and their kids stocked in woodlands. This study aimed to evaluate the supplementation strategies and assess the associated performance of nursing Kiko does and kids and the nutritional status of does as reflected in their feces when stocked in woodlands. Two supplementation strategies were evaluated: (1) supplemental grazing in adjacent silvopasture plots for 3–4 h/day and (2) supplementation with corn at the rate of 0.5% of their metabolic body weight and free-choice hay. Nursing Kiko does raised in woodlands with supplemental grazing showed a better FAMACHA score and browsing activities at a greater height compared to their counterpart does supplemented with hay and corn. The fecal nitrogen concentration was higher in does with supplemental grazing compared to those supplemented with hay and corn. The supplemental grazing was found to be a better option than supplementing with hay and corn for nursing Kiko does raised in woodlands. The influence of different supplement types on the performance and nutrient dynamics of goats stocked in woodlands is not known. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplement type on the performance and the concentration of fecal nutrients of nursing does and the performance of kids raised in woodlands. One group of goats (SG, 9 does; 18 kids) was allowed supplemental grazing in adjacent silvopasture plots for 3–4 h daily and another group (SF, 8 does; 15 kids) was supplemented with corn (0.5% of metabolic weight) and ad libitum hay. Vegetation samples were collected and analyzed for productivity and quality (crude protein, CP; acid detergent fiber, ADF; neutral detergent fiber, NDF). The quality of the hay (N, ADF, NDF) and fecal samples (N, P, Ca) was analyzed. The animals' live weight, FAMACHA score, and body condition score were collected. The browsing height for does consuming woodland vegetation was measured. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure, Mixed procedure, and MEANS procedure in SAS 9.4. SG does showed better FAMACHA scores vs. SF does (p < 0.05). Fecal N and ADF were greater (p < 0.0001) in SG does vs. SF does. The findings showed a better performance and greater concentration of fecal nutrients in SG does vs. SF does, suggesting grazing quality pastures is a better option than using feedstuffs to supplement nursing does in woodland. Objective. The nutritional potential of maize's Puma hybrids was evaluated as silage forage in 50% of the pregnant ewe's diet. Materials and methods. Sixty-one pregnant ewes were used, assigned to the groups: Centli Puma (N = 21), Tsiri Puma (N = 20) and Tlaoli Puma (N = 20) and their weight, body condition (CC), FAMACHA and metabolic profile in gestation were measured, as well as milk production and quality at 15 and 30 days of lactation. In lambs, birth temperature and weight were measured. Results. The weight and CC of the ewes during pregnancy and lactation were not affected by the group (p>0.05). On the other hand, the estimated feed intake was higher in the ewes of the Centli group (p<0.0001), while the FAMACHA values were better in the Centli and Tlaoli groups (p<0.05). Proteins, glucose, cholesterol and β hydroxybutyrate during pregnancy and milk production and composition during lactation were not affected by the group (p>0.05). Neither did the weight of the lambs and their body temperature vary among the three groups (p>0.05). Conclusions. The study was to investigate the effects of different NFC/NDF ratios on the ruminal fermentation characteristics and serum biochemical indexes of mutton sheep under a corn straw diet. A total of 15 healthy, 50 kg mutton sheep fitted with permanent rumen fistula were seclected, the mutton sheep in the group I, group H, and group M were fed a total mixed diet feeding with NFC/NDF ratios of 0.65, 1.02, and 1.57, respectively. The pre-test period was 15 days, and the formal test period was seven days. The results showed that with the increase of NFC/NDF ratio, the rumen pH value decreased. However, the content of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) in rumen liquid first increased and then decreased. With the increase of feeding time, bacterial protein (MCP) content first decreased and then increased. With the increase of NFC/NDF ratio, the total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) increased after 6 h. The concentration of serum total protein (TP) in the group I was significantly higher than that in other groups (P<0.05), while the concentrations of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and albumin (ALB) were significantly lower than that in other groups (P<0.05). The concentration of serum triglyceride (TG) in the group H was significantly higher than that in the group I (P<0.05), and the concentration of free fatty acid (NEFA) was significantly higher than that in other groups (P<0.05). The concentrations of serum urea nitrogen (BUN) and leptin (LEP) in the group M were significantly higher than those in other groups (P<0.05), the concentration of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) was significantly higher than that in the group H (P<0.05), and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly lower than that in other groups (P<0.05). The experiment was conducted to study the effect of corn stalk leaves and pith on the growth performance, nutrient apparent digestibility, and serum biochemical indexes of mutton sheep. Thirty healthy ewes weighing (30.0 ± 3.0) kg were randomly divided into two groups according to the principle of similar body weight, with three replicates in each group and five ewes in each replicate. The sheep in the control group were fed a corn straw as the roughage, the sheep in the experimental group were fed corn stalk leaves and pith as the roughage, and the sheep in the experimental group and the control group were fed the same concentrate. The pre-trial period was 10 days and the formal trial period was 90 days. The results showed that compared with the control group, the average daily gain of the experimental group increased by 10.58%, the average daily dry matter intake increased by 1.01%, and the feed to gain ratio decreased by 8.66%. The apparent digestibility rates of dry matter, crude protein, crude fat, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, calcium, and phosphorus in the experimental group were 6.52%, 8.69%, 9.43%, 8.17%, 8.43%, 5.87%, and 6.51% higher than those in the control group, respectively. Compared with the control group, the total protein content, globulin content, and alkaline phosphatase activity in the serum of sheep in the experimental group increased by 3.41%, 10.70%, and 12.42%, respectively, and the urea nitrogen content decreased by 5.00%. The concentrations of serum immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin M, immunoglobulin G, complement C3, and complement C4 in the experimental group were 5.89%, 7.90%, 7.58%, 6.95%, and 2.66% higher than those in the control group, respectively. Fat supplementation has potential to improve reproductive performance and increase pregnancy rates in cattle by increasing the energy density of the diet. However, some of the positive effects of fat seem to be influenced by the type of fatty acid fed. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA , 22:6n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA , 20:5n-3) are long-chain n-3 poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that have important biological effects on reproduction through their involvement in hormone and series 3 prostaglandin synthesis. Ruminant tissues are naturally almost devoid of n-3 long-chain PUFA, specifically EPA and DHA. Algae biomass provides a consistent source of DHA and EPA that could be fed to alter hormonal profiles and improve reproduction of beef heifers. Eighty-eight Angus × Simmental heifers (427 ± 1.8 kg body weight [ BW ]) were blocked by BW and allotted to 2 treatments (44/treatment, 4 pens/treatment, 11 heifers/pen). Control heifers were fed a diet that contained (dry matter [ DM ] basis) 52.8% mixed grass silage, 32% corn silage, and 15.2% concentrate. DHAgold (49% fat; 21.8% DHA; DSM Inc.) was included in the algae diet at 1.65% DM, replacing equal parts of corn and DDGS. Diets were formulated to contain 12% crude protein and 0.85 Mcal/kg net energy for gain (NEg). Heifers were fed treatment diets from 54 d prior to the breeding season through the first trimester. Follicular fluid was collected on day 47 for hormonal analysis. Artificial insemination (AI) was from days 54 to 77. Heifers that did not get pregnant to AI were removed from the study on day 109 and placed with a bull. The study ended on day 180. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS. During the pre-breeding period, algae heifers had lesser dry matter intake (P  = 0.006) compared to control heifers. Heifers supplemented with algae had a greater average daily gain (P  = 0.03) during the breeding period and BW tended (P  = 0.06) to be greater for algae compared to control heifers on day 98 and was greater on day 180 (P  = 0.03). Dominant follicle diameter and follicular estrogen concentration were unaffected by treatment (P  ≥ 0.12). Follicular insulin-like growth factor-1 was greater in algae compared to control heifers (P  = 0.03). First service conception rate did not differ between treatments (P  = 0.67); however, second service and overall conception were lesser (P  ≤ 0.03) in algae compared to control heifers.
