High-profile article retractions, survey results indicating falsification of data, and evidence of mistaken findings raise concerns that problematic empirical research has found its way into the management field's literatures. To help safeguard the field against such vagaries, we describe three tests that can be applied to most empirical articles to assess the accuracy of the reported findings. Using a retracted article as an example, we also demonstrate how the tests uncover reporting anomalies. The results identify numerous irregularities which would have raised "red flags" had the tests been applied to the article while it was under review. Studies have suggested that rumors may ultimately be "self-corrected" by online crowds. Following the previous literature, we explored how two perceptual factors, including the third-person perception (TPP) and perceived norms, predict people's intentions to correct misinformation online. Our findings show that people's corrective intentions are positively associated with both factors. While previous scholarship typically understands corrective actions as outward behaviors that identify "other people" as the subjects of correction, our study reveals that TPP and perceived norms also associate with misinformation spreader's intentions to self-correct. A meta-analysis was conducted to examine the extent of continued influence of misinformation in the face of correction and the theoretical explanations of this phenomenon. Aggregation of results from 32 studies (N = 6,527) revealed that, on average, correction does not entirely eliminate the effect of misinformation (r = –.05, p =.045). Corrective messages were found to be more successful when they are coherent, consistent with the audience's worldview, and delivered by the source of the misinformation itself. Corrections are less effective if the misinformation was attributed to a credible source, the misinformation has been repeated multiple times prior to correction, or when there was a time lag between the delivery of the misinformation and the correction. Retraction is the withdrawal of published article after it is found that the authors did not ensure integrity in conducting and reporting their research activities. The bibliometric information of 4716 document categorised as retractions in Science Citation Index, Web of Science was downloaded and analysed to understand trend, pattern and reasons of retraction. The results showed that retractions had increased during the ten-year period, 2008-2017. The main reasons for retractions were plagiarism, falsified data, manipulation of images and figures. It was also found that just 40 out of 4716 retraction notices had explicitly stated reasons for retracting the published articles. The open access journals had more number of retractions as compared to subscription based journals. The study will guide library professionals and research scholars towards a better comprehension of the reasons behind retractions in science discipline in the ten-year period. The codebook for analyzing newspaper corrections has remained nearly unchanged since 1936. This project sought to create and validate a new codebook. Study 1 analyzed a previous application of the original codebook and proposed a new version, which Study 2 and Study 3 then applied and tested. In both, the new codebook resulted in fewer underused categories and fewer uncategorized corrections. The accelerating news cycle means there is a risk that errors become more common, but digital media also allow for correcting errors continuously and being transparent about this. In this study, we investigate Swedish citizens’ attitudes toward errors and corrections. The results demonstrate that citizens have strong expectations that news media publish correct information and they have little tolerance for errors. People’s background and media use do not affect attitudes toward errors and corrections to any large extent, but media trust explains a small fraction of the results—It is only those who already trust the media that appreciate corrections. In 1972, The New York Times adopted the policy of running daily corrections in a fixed part of the paper. The idea of corrections, and a call for increased accountability more generally, had been circulating for a few years. This article examines internal communication from the Times that sheds light on how the paper’s editor, A.M. Rosenthal, made the decision to turn the idea into policy. A number of factors, including an essay by Daniel Patrick Moynihan and prodding by the journalism reviews (MORE) and The Columbia Journalism Review, influenced Rosenthal. Wendy Wyatt’s discursive theory of press criticism and Daniel Hallin’s spheres of consensus, controversy, and deviance inform this article’s discussion of how outside influence works. Coming from the “paper of record,” the Times’s decision to enact the corrections policy had a snowball effect, and within a few years, running a regular corrections box became commonplace among American newspapers. Background To investigate fraud and errors, scientists have studied cohorts of retraction notices. These researches have been performed using a PubMed search on publication type "retraction of publication" which retrieves the notices of the retractions. We assessed the stability of the indexation of retraction notices over a 15-month period and what was the time-lag to get stability. Findings A search on notices of retraction issued in 2008 was repeated every 3 months during 15 months from February 2011. The first search resulted in 237 notices of retraction. Throughout the study period, 14 discrepancies with the initial search were observed (6%). We found that the number of retraction notices became stable 35 months after the retraction. Abstract: For research into language development in L2 writing to have any relevance, it has to be situated within a framework of decisions in writing pedagogy. Furthermore, a perspective on L2 language development cannot be limited only to accuracy levels. Even if this is the case, it is counter-intuitive that further input may be detrimental to language development, unless other factors are at work. Since Truscott’s views cannot be ignored on the subject, some serious limitations in his more recent publications are identified, and his conclusions are later contrasted with four recent studies into error correction. However, before evaluating these latter studies, consideration is given to certain minimal features of what a communicative process writing approach and language correction within such an approach might suppose. Since it is relevant to the discussion, the significance of different aspects of input is discussed along with the issue of motivation, which Truscott has included in his thesis. Then, some research design and pedagogical issues are outlined since they are considered necessary to situate and analyse the four recent empirical research studies into error feedback on accuracy levels. With these studies in mind, a number of different writing task options are considered, which reflect possible pedagogical choices, apart from typical process writing. Finally, the conclusion is that the correction-effect-on-written-accuracy debate has actually narrowed the question of language development in discourse writing to levels of grammatical accuracy, and the recent research gives more of an appearance of including feedback on the third P of a PPP approach than anything else. Kingsolver et al.'s review of phenotypic selection gradients from natural populations provided a glimpse of the form and strength of selection in nature and how selection on different organisms and traits varies. Because this review's underlying database could be a key tool for answering fundamental questions concerning natural selection, it has spawned discussion of potential biases inherent in the review process. Here, we explicitly test for two commonly discussed sources of bias: sampling error and publication bias. We model the relationship between variance among selection gradients and sample size that sampling error produces by subsampling large empirical data sets containing measurements of traits and fitness. We find that this relationship was not mimicked by the review data set and therefore conclude that sampling error does not bias estimations of the average strength of selection. Using graphical tests, we find evidence for bias against publishing weak estimates of selection only among very small studies (N< 38). However, this evidence is counteracted by excess weak estimates in larger studies. Thus, estimates of average strength of selection from the review are less biased than is often assumed. Objectives: To explore how often newspapers cover the retraction of a medical journal article and whether newspaper coverage corresponds with the appearance of a press release about the retraction. Methods: Fifty citations were identified in PubMed that had been indexed with the Medical Subject Heading ‘Retracted Publication’. Next, the archives of LexisNexis's ‘Major Newspapers’ and EurekAlert's press releases were searched to find references to those retracted publications. Results: Newspaper articles addressed exactly three of the 50 retracted publications, and press releases, exactly four of the 50 retracted publications. All three retracted publications that received newspaper coverage also had a press release. In other words, newspapers only covered a retraction that had been introduced by a press release. Conclusion: One would expect that newspaper coverage would increase after a press release, but the suggested relationships among a medical journal article retraction, a press release and newspaper coverage should be further investigated. If the linkage suggested by the data of this study holds, and if newspaper coverage stimulates library patron interest, then a medical library might prepare itself for information requests following a press release.
