6. Apacheta, a new geothermal prospect in Northern Chile

Abstract

The discovery of two high-temperature fumaroles, with gas geochemistry compatible with an economic geothermal system, established Apacheta as one of the most attractive geothermal exploration prospects in northern Chile. These remote fumaroles at 5,150 m elevation were first sampled in 1999 by ENAP and its partners, following up on the reports of a CODELCO water exploration well that flowed small amounts of dry steam at 4,540 m elevation in the valley 4.5 km east of the fumaroles. The prospect is associated with a Plio-Pleistocene volcanic complex located within a NW-trending graben along the axis of the high Andes. The regional water table is ~;4,200 masl. There are no hot springs, just the 88 degrees C steam well and the 109 degrees and 118 degrees C fumaroles with gas compositions that indicate reservoir temperatures of greater than or equal to 250 degrees C, using a variety of gas geothermometers. An MT-TDEM survey was completed in 2001-2002 by Geotermica del Norte (SDN), an ENAP-CODELCO partnership, to explore the Apacheta geothermal concession. The survey results indicated that base of the low resistivity clay cap has a structural apex just west of the fumaroles, a pattern typically associated with shallow permeability within a high temperature geothermal resource. SGN plans to drill at least one exploration well in 2002-03 to characterize a possible economic resource at Apacheta.

Abstract

This booklet is a teacher's manual in a series of booklets that make up the core of a Physical Science course designed for the freshman year of college and used by teachers in the 27 colleges participating in the Thirteen College Curriculum Program. This program is a curriculum revision project in support of 13 predominantly Negro colleges and reflects educational research in the area of disadvantaged youth. In this unit, the scientific method is discussed and illustrated with simple experiments that show how scientists acquire knowledge. Examples and experiments are provided to show how scientists use mathematics in discovering relationships in the physical world. Patterns in physical problems are demonstrated in a discussion of the simple pendulum and the simple lever. (MLH)

27. Clinical Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome in an adolescent: ultrasonographic findings

Abstract

Adolescent girls are at highest risk for developing pelvic inflammatory disease as a result of gonorrhea or chlamydia, two sexually transmitted diseases. A further complication that may occur is Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome, which includes symptoms of pain and tenderness in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen resulting from inflammation of the surface of the liver. A case is described of a 13-year-old girl with pelvic inflammatory disease. She was at first seen for complaints of pain in the lower left abdomen. The patient's sexual history indicated sexual activity for the past year with at least five partners. No contraception was used, but there was no history of any prior sexually transmitted disease. When the tests revealed no sign of disease, the patient was sent home with a diagnosis of mittelschmerz, a pain that occurs in some women during ovulation. The pain returned and became severe; this time it was located in the upper right quadrant. Tests revealed pelvic inflammatory disease caused by chlamydia; she was treated with antibiotics and again sent home. The patient soon returned again with pain and fever, at which time the Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome was considered. Ultrasonography was used to visualize the structures in the abdomen which showed a collection of fluid around the liver and spleen. Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome was then diagnosed, and treatment with intravenous antibiotics was successful. It was concluded that the girl probably developed the syndrome because of a delay in treatment for the chlamydial pelvic inflammatory disease. Ultrasonography appears to be useful in diagnosing Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome in adolescents. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
