Mean-field models have been developed to replicate key features of epileptic seizure dynamics. However, the precise mechanisms and the role of the brain area responsible for seizure onset and propagation remain incompletely understood. In this study, we employ computational methods within The Virtual Brain framework and the Epileptor model to explore how the location and connectivity of an Epileptogenic Zone (EZ) in a mouse brain are related to focal seizures (seizures that start in one brain area and may or may not remain localized), with a specific focus on the hippocampal region known for its association with epileptic seizures. We then devise computational strategies to confine seizures (prevent widespread propagation), simulating medical-like treatments such as tissue resection and the application of an anti-seizure drugs or neurostimulation to suppress hyperexcitability. Through selectively removing (blocking) specific connections informed by the structural connectome and graph network measurements or by locally reducing outgoing connection weights of EZ areas, we demonstrate that seizures can be kept constrained around the EZ region. The human brain, composed of billions of neurons and synaptic connections, is an intricate network coordinating a sophisticated balance of excitatory and inhibitory activities between brain regions. The dynamical balance between excitation and inhibition is vital for adjusting neural input/output relationships in cortical networks and regulating the dynamic range of their responses to stimuli. To infer this balance using connectomics, we recently introduced a computational framework based on the Ising model, which was first developed to explain phase transitions in ferromagnets, and proposed a novel hybrid resting-state structural connectome (rsSC). Here, we show that a generative model based on the Kuramoto phase oscillator can be used to simulate static and dynamic functional connectomes (FC) with rsSC as the coupling weight coefficients, such that the simulated FC aligns well with the observed FC when compared with that simulated traditional structural connectome., Competing Interests: AL is a consultant for Otsuka USA, and serves on the medical advisory board of Buoy Health. Prosthetic devices that replace a lost limb have become increasingly performant in recent years. Recent advances in both software and hardware allow for the decoding of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to improve the control of active prostheses with brain-computer interfaces (BCI). Most BCI research is focused on the upper body. Although BCI research for the lower extremities has increased in recent years, there are still gaps in our knowledge of the neural patterns associated with lower limb movement. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to show the feasibility of decoding lower limb movements from EEG data recordings. The second aim is to investigate whether well-known neuroplastic adaptations in individuals with an amputation have an influence on decoding performance. To address this, we collected data from multiple individuals with lower limb amputation and a matched able-bodied control group. Using these data, we trained and evaluated common BCI methods that have already been proven effective for upper limb BCI. With an average test decoding accuracy of 84% for both groups, our results show that it is possible to discriminate different lower extremity movements using EEG data with good accuracy. There are no significant differences ( p = 0.99) in the decoding performance of these movements between healthy subjects and subjects with lower extremity amputation. Financial models are based on the standard assumptions of frictionless markets, complete information, no transaction costs and no taxes and borrowing and short selling without restrictions. Short-selling bans around the world after the global financial crisis and in several exchanges during the COVID 19 period, become more and more important. This paper bridges the gap by providing for the first time in the literature a model that accounting explicitly and simultaneously for inflation, information costs and short sales in the portfolio performance with regime switching. We argue that what we count has a crucial impact on how we count, to the extent that even adults may have difficulty using elementary mathematical notions in concrete situations. Specifically, we investigate how the use of certain types of quantities (durations, heights, number of floors) may emphasize the ordinality of the numbers featured in a problem, whereas other quantities (collections, weights, prices) may emphasize the cardinality of the depicted numerical situations. We suggest that this distinction leads to the construction of one of two possible encodings, either a cardinal or an ordinal representation. This difference should, in turn, constrain the way we approach problems, influencing our mathematical reasoning in multiple activities. This hypothesis is tested in six experiments (N = 916), using different versions of multiple-strategy arithmetic word problems. We show that the distinction between cardinal and ordinal quantities predicts problem sorting (Experiment 1), perception of similarity between problems (Experiment 2), direct problem comparison (Experiment 3), choice of a solving algorithm (Experiment 4), problem solvability estimation (Experiment 5) and solution validity assessment (Experiment 6). The results provide converging clues shedding light into the fundamental importance of the cardinal versus ordinal distinction on adults' reasoning about numerical situations. Overall, we report multiple evidence that general, non-mathematical knowledge associated with the use of different quantities shapes adults' encoding, recoding and solving of mathematical word problems.
