19. Evolution and Effectiveness of Salt Marsh Restoration: A Bibliometric Analysis.

Abstract

Salt marshes play a critical role in supporting water quality, erosion control, flood protection, and carbon sequestration. Threats from climate change and human activities have prompted global restoration initiatives. We analyzed restoration efforts worldwide from 1978 to 2022, using the Web of Science database and SciMAT mapping tool. After a PRISMA screening to identify methodologies, success rates, and key indicators, a total of 62 publications underwent detailed analysis, to increase knowledge on the best practices to employ in future restoration interventions and evaluation of their effectiveness. The research reveals a growing interest in ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity, anthropogenic impacts, and ecosystem services. Assisted interventions emerged as the predominant restoration method, employing 15 indicators across vegetation, sediment, fauna, and water, each one using different metrics for the intervention evaluation based on how good the outcome of the interventions described in the reviewed studies met the desired result. Our analysis suggests that combining natural interventions such as managed realignment with reconnection to tidal waters, along with long-term monitoring of vegetation, fauna, and water indicators such as sedimentation and erosion rates, plant cover and biomass, as well as fauna diversity and density, leads to the most successful outcomes. We provide valuable insights into best practices for future restoration interventions, offering guidance to future practitioners and policymakers based on a comprehensive review of the scientific literature, contributing to the resilience of these vital ecosystems, and ensuring effective restoration actions in the coming years. Abstract

Ocean Sampling Day was initiated by the EU-funded Micro B3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology) project to obtain a snapshot of the marine microbial biodiversity and function of the world's oceans. It is a simultaneous global mega-sequencing campaign aiming to generate the largest standardized microbial data set in a single day. This will be achievable only through the coordinated efforts of an Ocean Sampling Day Consortium, supportive partnerships and networks between sites. This commentary outlines the establishment, function and aims of the Consortium and describes our vision for a sustainable study of marine microbial communities and their embedded functional traits.

Abstract

Rare earth elements were extensively employed for many years to improve plant growth in farming. However, their effect on plant's behavior relies on their concentration and the plant species. The impact of low doses of lanthanum (La; 1–10 µM) on plant growth, mineral uptake, and the production of secondary metabolites was assessed in two Brassicaceae species (Cakile maritime and Brassica juncea) after 14 days of La exposure. The La accumulation potential was also evaluated. Results showed that both species were able to maintain good dry biomass production under La. C. maritima plants accumulated more La than B. juncea, and a higher accumulation was noticed in the roots (in both plant species). Accordingly to La accumulation in plant tissues, nutrient absorption was affected in C. maritima shoots and roots, whereas no severe effect on nutrient contents was noticed in B. juncea. Phenolic compounds increased in the aerial and underground parts of both species; thus, the accretion was more notorious in shoots of the highest La concentrations. The studied Brassicaceae species showed an ability to survive in a La-contaminated medium. However, according to tolerance index values, C. maritima was found to be more tolerant of La than B. juncea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Atmospheric CO2 enrichment, which is caused to a large extent by anthropogenic activities, is known to interfere with sediment microbial communities via plant rhizospheres. The present work aimed to evaluate this interaction in Spartina maritima ((Curtis) Fernald.) rhizosediments, aiming to depict the impacts of atmospheric CO2 increase in the biogeochemical processes occurring in the rhizosphere of this pioneer and highly abundant Mediterranean halophyte. For this purpose, mesocosms trials were conducted, exposing salt marsh cores with S. maritima and its sediments to 410 and 700 ppm of CO2 while assessing rhizosediment extracellular enzymatic activities. An evident increase in dehydrogenase activity was observed and directly linked to microbial activity, indicating a priming effect in the rhizosphere community under increased CO2. Phosphatase showed a marked increase in rhizosediments exposed to elevated CO2, denoting a higher requirement of phosphate for maintaining higher biological activity rates. High sulphatase activity suggests a possible S-limitation (microbial or plant) due to elevated CO2, probably due to higher sulphur needs for protein synthesis, thus increasing the need to acquire more labile forms of sulphur. With this need to acquire and synthesize amino acids, a marked decrease in protease activity was detected. Most carbon-related enzymes suffered an increase under increased CO2. Overall, a shift in sediment extracellular enzymatic activity could be observed upon CO2 fertilization, mostly due to priming effects and not due to changes in the quality of carbon substrates, as shown by the sediment stable isotope signatures. The altered recycling activity of organic C, N, and P compounds may lead to an unbalance of these biogeochemical cycles, shifting the rhizosphere ecosystem function, with inevitable changes in the ecosystem services level.
