This study explores the development and characterization of biodegradable leather using alginate derivatives as sustainable tanning agents, aiming to reduce the environmental impact associated with traditional leather tanning processes. Alginate, a natural polysaccharide derived from brown algae, was modified through ultrasound treatment to reduce viscosity and improve its application in leather tanning. This study investigated the use of sodium alginates as bio-based retanning agents, comparing their performance against that of conventional chromium-tanned and vegetable-tanned leathers, as well as synthetic alternatives such as leatherette, Piñatex®, and Desserto®. The physical, chemical, and thermal properties of the resulting leathers were assessed. The results demonstrated that alginate-based tanning agents could produce leather with comparable or superior properties to conventional and synthetic leathers, meeting the quality standards required for high-end footwear and leather goods. This research highlights the potential of alginate derivatives to serve as eco-friendly alternatives in the leather industry. Phycocyanin was extracted from Spirulina platensis using conventional extraction (CE), direct ultrasonic-assisted extraction (direct UAE), indirect ultrasonic-assisted extraction (indirect UAE), and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) methods at different temperatures, extraction intervals, stirring rate, and power intensities while maintaining the same algae to solvent ratio (1:15 w/v). The optimization of the extraction parameters indicated that the direct UAE yielded the highest phycocyanin concentration (29.31 ± 0.33 mg/mL) and antioxidant activity (23.6 ± 0.56 mg TE/g algae), while MAE achieved the highest purity (Rp = 0.5 ± 0.002). Based on the RP value, phycocyanin extract obtained by MAE (1:15 w/v algae to solvent ratio, 40 min, 40 °C, and 900 rpm) was selected as active compound in an alginate-based hydrogel formulation designed as potential wound dressings. Phycocyanin extracts and loaded hydrogels were characterized by FT-IR analysis. SEM analysis confirmed a porous structure for both blank and phycocyanin loaded hydrogels, while the mechanical properties remained approximately unchanged in the presence of phycocyanin. Phycocyanin release kinetics was investigated at two pH values using Zero-order, First-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetics models. The Higuchi model best fitted the experimental results. Copper nanoparticles on silica support are cheap and effective catalysts for dehydrogenation of n-butanol, a biomass-derived building block which is increasingly used. Ultrasonically assisted Cu catalysts are prepared, characterized, and tested for the conversion of n-butanol to n-butanal. The best performance in terms of overall conversion of n-butanol and selectivity to butanal was offered by ultrasound-prepared process of the Cu nanoparticles. In conventional wet impregnation method, Cu nanoparticles on the surface of support tend to aggregate in some sort of cubic aggregates with the size of 4–5 µm and because of this, the percentage of the centers of silica (on which intermolecular dehydration reactions occur) is higher compared to Cu metallic centers (that promotes the dehydrogenation reaction). The ultrasound reduction stage used in the preparation of catalysts provides a better coverage of the catalyst surface by Cu nanoparticles that have a more uniform dimension, which offers a greater selectivity to butanal (more than 95%) and a negligible selectivity to butene. There is some information on the bio-effects of microwaves on microalgae. Some recent studies demonstrates that samples exposed to microwave of various powers showed significantly higher growth rates and biomass concentration than non-irradiated controls. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of microwave radiation on growth rates, biomass concentration and oil content of Nannochloris sp. microalgae. To perform this experiment five microwave treatment conditions were established, using five microwave power values (140, 220, 300, 400 and 500 W), and each experiment was performed for 10 seconds. The results obtained had shown that the samples exposed to microwave irradiation have a higher concentration biomass and growth rate compared to non-irradiated controls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this research was to investigate the chemical composition of Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt. fruits extract, to highlight the potential of ultrasound assisted extraction in the fast preparation of extracts rich in polyphenols using different solvents (55%, 78% and 96% hydrous ethanol) and to evaluate the antioxidant potential of formulated extracts. LC-MS/MS was used to characterize the ethanolic extract from Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt. dried fruits. The extract contains different flavonoids (marein, flavanomarein, quercetagetin-7-O-glucoside, okanin aurone, leptosidin, luteolin, apigenin) and phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid). Several parameters that could affect extraction efficiency were evaluated. Finally, this study focused on determination of plant extracts total phenolic content and their antioxidant capacity. The experimental results allowed the selection of the optimum operating parameters leading to the highest total polyphenolic content, expressed as gallic acid equivalents, and avoiding the degradation of phenolic compounds (ethanol 55%; extraction temperature 323.15 K, extraction time 30 min, liquid/solid ratio 20/1). Electron beam (EB) irradiation is a useful method to generate stable silver nanoparticles without the interference of inherent impurities generated from chemical reactions. Our experiments were carried out using linear electron beam accelerators with two different EB absorbed dose rates: 2 kGy min and 7-8 kGy s, and with different absorbed dose levels. The optimum conditions for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) generation by radiolysis, or by radiolysis combined with chemical reduction, were established. In order to obtain a good yield for AgNPs synthesized by radiolysis, a high dose rate is required, resulting in a rapid production process. At low absorbed dose rates, the utilization of a stabilization agent is advisable. By modifying the experimental conditions, the ratio between the chemical and radiolytic reduction process can be adjusted, thus it is possible to obtain nanoparticles with tailored characteristics, depending on the desired application.
