This work studies the multiple sources of impacts and disturbances in the Laja River (Central Chile) and evaluates the changes in water and sediment flows and planimetric geomorphic changes. The disturbances sources correspond to hydroelectric plants, water withdrawals for irrigation and the sustained decrease trend in rainfall in the basin. The changes in the plan‐view shape of the river reach were quantified using remote sensing techniques, through a supervised classification of Landsat 5 TM and 8 OLI satellite images, identified Water (W), Islands and Riverine Vegetation (IRV) and Bars and Banks Without Vegetation (BBWV), obtained a Kappa index>0,83 for a period of 15 years (2006–2021). Compared with historical records, the period of analysis shows a decrease in annual rainfall by 17.5%. In addition, water withdrawals for irrigation have contributed to a 64% decrease in monthly stream discharge during the dry season. As a consequence of the decrease in annual rainfall and water withdrawals for irrigation, the sediment transport capacity has also decreased by 10.5%. The changes in morphological driving variables (stream flows and sediment transport regimes) have manifested themselves in morphological changes, where it was possible to establish that a change in the channel form occurred in the last 15 years, going from a river with a single channel to a braided one. An important vegetation establishment has accompanied this morphological change on both riverbanks and the central bars. The colonizing vegetation corresponds to fast‐growing non‐native species (Salix spp., Populus spp. and Alnus spp). Simple Summary: In this study, it is described that embryos produced in vitro release nanoparticles charged with fragments of embryonic DNA. These nanoparticles, alongside their DNA content, can be recovered from the liquid medium where the embryos develop in vitro and used to assess the genetics of embryos. The analysis of gene markers is a common practice in clinics for selecting human embryos without genomic errors. In animals, it can help in selecting embryos with high genetic value. So far, this has been achieved using embryonic biopsy to collect several cells; however, this is invasive due to the manipulation of the embryo. In this sense, the secreted nanoparticles containing DNA could stand as samples for genetic analysis, without disturbing the embryo. The main concern is whether these particles are mainly released by low-quality embryos that will eventually die. This work aimed to evaluate whether the rate of cell death in the embryo affects the release of particles containing DNA. It was confirmed that viable and good-quality embryos secrete particles with DNA in the same way as low-quality embryos; therefore, they represent a suitable alternative for embryonic genetic diagnosis, avoiding the invasive nature and technical complexity of a biopsy. Pre-implantation embryos release extracellular vesicles containing different molecules, including DNA. The presence of embryonic DNA in E-EVs released into the culture medium during in vitro embryo production could be useful for genetic diagnosis. However, the vesicles containing DNA might be derived from embryos suffering from apoptosis, i.e., embryos of bad quality. This work intended to confirm that embryos release DNA that is useful for genotyping by evaluating the effect of embryonic apoptosis on DNA content in E-EVs. Bovine embryos were produced by parthenogenesis and in vitro fertilization (IVF). On Day 5, morulae were transferred to individual cultures in an EV-depleted SOF medium. On Day 7, embryos were used to evaluate cellular apoptosis, and each culture medium was collected to evaluate E-EV concentration, characterization, and DNA quantification. While no effect of the origin of the embryo on the apoptotic rate was found, arrested morulae had a higher apoptotic rate. E-EVs containing DNA were identified in all samples, and the concentration of those vesicles was not affected by the origin or quality of the embryos. However, the concentration of DNA was higher in EVs released by the arrested parthenogenetic embryos. There was a correlation between the concentration of E-EVs, the concentration of DNA-positive E-EVs, and the concentration of DNA. There was no negative effect of apoptotic rate on DNA-positive E-EVs and DNA concentration; however, embryos of the best quality with a low apoptotic rate still released EVs containing DNA. This study confirms that the presence of DNA in E-EVs is independent of embryo quality. Therefore, E-EVs could be used in liquid biopsy for noninvasive genetic diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrodynamics are a major environmental factor on intertidal rocky shores. Morphological responses to this factor are expected to strongly influence spatial distribution of species across environmental gradients. We here analysed the shell phenotypic variability of the limpet Fissurella latimarginata using geometric morphometric analysis. The limpets were obtained from a sheltered intertidal coastal area and a wave-exposed environment. To determine whether the shell shape variation of the intertidal molluscs is linked to their resistance to differential intertidal wave exposure, mesocosm studies were developed in a hydraulic flume to explore the effects of hydrodynamic forces on this limpet species. A unidirectional current was used to test the impacts of step-by-step increased current flow velocities for each limpet. The phenotypic variability observed in the populations of F. latimarginata was associated with habitats characterized by contrasting wave exposure. Limpets from exposed environments showed a flattened, round to laterally wider and posteriorly narrower shell shape, larger foot and higher full limpet height, and were dislodged at higher velocities. A more laterally compressed and peaked shape was found in limpets from sheltered areas and these showed a lower resistance to wave action by dislodging at lower velocities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent work in the undeveloped Rio Murta Basin, located in Chilean Patagonia, identified an evolutionary trend in the fluvial system as it progresses toward and away from dynamic equilibrium. A location-for-time-substitution model employed over the longitudinal extent of a 16 km study site assessed the performance of extremal hypotheses in identifying dynamic equilibrium conditions. Numerous extremal hypotheses were successful in identifying the spatial trend, but no means were available to discern differences between them. Thus, this study uses field measurements within the evolutionary trend to propose a new metric for evaluating extremal hypotheses. A thorough review and synthesis of the extremal approach are additionally presented. The new method compares theoretical predictions against field-measured values to determine which extremal hypothesis is most effective in identifying the condition of dynamic equilibrium in a gravel-bed river. Channel width and depth are identified as the dependent stream variables that uniquely differentiate most extremal hypotheses from one another. The results indicate that extremal hypotheses based on energy metrics of the flow are most successful, with the strongest support for minimum kinetic energy and minimum specific stream power.
