Abstract

Small-sized systems exhibit a finite number of routes to chaos. However, in extended systems, not all routes to complex spatiotemporal behavior have been fully explored. Starting from the sine-Gordon model of parametrically driven chain of damped nonlinear oscillators, we investigate a route to spatiotemporal chaos emerging from standing waves. The route from the stationary to the chaotic state proceeds through quasiperiodic dynamics. The standing wave undergoes the onset of oscillatory instability, which subsequently exhibits a different critical frequency, from which the complexity originates. A suitable amplitude equation, valid close to the parametric resonance, makes it possible to produce universe results. The respective phase-space structure and bifurcation diagrams are produced in a numerical form. We characterize the relevant dynamical regimes by means of the largest Lyapunov exponent, the power spectrum, and the evolution of the total intensity of the wave field., Comment: to be published in Chaos, Solitons & Fractals

Abstract

Discrete dissipative coupled systems exhibit complex behavior such as chaos, spatiotemporal intermittence, chimera among others. We construct and investigate chimera states, in the form of confined stationary and dynamical states in a chain of parametrically driven sites with onsite damping and cubic nonlinearity. The system is modeled by the respective discrete parametrically driven damped nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Chimeras feature quasi-periodic or chaotic dynamic in the filled area, quantified by time dependence of the total norm (along with its power spectrum), and by the largest Lyapunov exponent. Systematic numerical simulations, in combination with some analytical results, reveal regions in the parameter space populated by stable localized states of different types. A phase transition from the stationary disorder states to spatially confined dynamical chaotic one is identified. Abstract

Atmospheric and oceanographic variability off the northern Iberian Peninsula in the 1990s is described from climatological databases and Spanish hydrographic surveys. The wind regime during the dccade can be divided into two principal periods. In the first, northerly (upwelling favourable) winds are prom inent, while in the second, southwesterly winds dom inate, resulting in diminished upwelling, an increase in sea surface tem peratures and the occurrence of the winter polew ard current. In the sub­surface waters during summer, a w arm ing trend through the 1990s of between 0.02 and 0.05°C year-1 is found, with the maximum am plitude between 150 and 200 m. The w arm est year was 1998. Salinity also varied during the decade, with higher salinities generally reflecting an increase in the poleward current and low salinities indicating advection from the inner Bay o f Biscay. In 1995/1996 and 1997/1998, a strong winter surface Poleward Current carrying warm, salty water was present along the Portu­guese coast and reached the southern Bay o f Biscay. It contributed significantly to the heat content in the upper 500 m of the w ater column. The intensification o f the Poleward Current is associated with increased onshore E km an transport during autum n in western Galicia. Sea level variability also reflects wind changes with stron­ger southwesterly winds resulting in higher levels. Mean sea level increased from 1993 to 1997, giving a somewhat greater increasing trend for the last decade com pared to the long-term over the past 55 years. Abstract

Time-series (1967 -1997) of environmental variables such as air and sea surface tem­perature (SST), precipitation, wind, Ekman transport, and mean sea level, as well as time-series (1985-1997) of recruitment of horse mackerel, were studied in Atlantic Ibe­rian waters. All time-series were analysed for autocorrelation. The results indicate a statistically significant relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation and air temperature in Santander. In western Iberia, winter Ekman transport is significantly correlated with the annual Gulf Stream position and sea level with the winter Gulf Stream position. Horse mackerel recruitment is negatively correlated with the annual and spring values of air temperature in the Cantabrian Sea and SST and air tempera­ture in western Iberia. Correlation between recruitment and upwelling index is signifi­cant in spring and summer. Recruitment is also negatively correlated with the annual and winter Ekman transport. Abstract

Fluctuations in the Iberian stock in the period 1980-1989 have been examined, taking into account what is known of the biology of the species, oceanic and atmospheric parameters, and the fishing effort directed at this stock. During this period, there have been significant changes in recruitment, which was good in 1983 and 1987 and poor in 1982, 1985, 1986, and 1988. Some links between recruitment anomalies and environmental parameters (surface temperatures, prevailing winds, sea level) have been identified. Variations in recruitment can be explained on the basis of fluctuations in “environmental windows" during the periods of spawning and larval drift. The success of spawning is controlled by the existence of a favourable environment during larval drift into areas with weak upwelling and abundant food.

Abstract

Today’s military and commercial aircraft avionics and general systems are built around complex networks of intelligent devices. Maintenance and troubleshooting of these systems often require access to the data bus or networks connecting the system components. Whether it is on the integration test bench, Final Assembly Line (FAL) or at the Maintenance and Repair Organization (MRO), these tasks are usually performed by means of many, expensive, heavy and intrusive equipment. The MMIBS (Mini-Multi Interface Box Simulator) is a very compact, portable, multipurpose, lightweight, low-power, and easy-of-use electronics test means intended to improve digital aircraft ground testing and maintenance troubleshooting. It is capable of perform functional testing and simulating aeronautical equipment through most common aeronautical communication interfaces, such as AFDX, CAN BUS, ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553, RS-422, RS-232, RS-485, Discrete and Analog I/O and RVDT (Rotary Variable Differential Transformer) reading capabilities. Besides, the system is highly configurable and reprogrammable by means of intuitive Python-based scripting. System is also able to be controlled with an intuitive, user-friendly and dedicated HMI (Human Machine Interface). In this mode, the user can conform a MMIBS WIFI network, allowing multiple MMIBS operating in parallel to cover complex testing scenarios. The MMIBS device integrates all the aeronautical communication and signaling in a volume of 12x12x12cm and weight of 1200g and provides an autonomy of 5 hours. In this way, our solution combines performance, reliability, low maintenance costs, and ease-of-use to support efficient ground maintenance operations.

Abstract

Deep remnants of the mixed layer from the previous winter were discovered as part of an analysis of the distribution of the water masses and their circulation in the eastern North Atlantic region off the northern half of the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula undertaken in May 1993. There was some interleaving with shallow intrusions of light (warm and salty) Central Water of southern origin. The isopycnals above the upper slope and the shelf break raised towards the shore favouring the entrance of upper layers of Central Water into the outer shelf under a surface front.

50. A place to call home?: recent immigrant integration experiences in Lethbridge, Alberta

Abstract

The settlement and integration of immigrants is a common policy focus for governments and researchers across the world. In Canada, its relevancy has only increased over recent decades; it is incorporated in official rhetoric and studies regularly examine the integrative experiences of newcomers. Still, most of these studies occur in the context of Canada’s largest and most diverse cities. In this thesis I examine the settlement experiences of recent landed immigrants in Lethbridge—a small Albertan city—utilizing mixed methods research. Using an adapted version of Tom Kuhlman’s (1991) conceptual framework, this study examines the socioeconomic, social, and structural aspects of integration, ultimately finding that while Lethbridge generally fosters integration as outlined by official rhetoric, there remain significant gaps between groups. Analyses especially highlight the crucial roles that community support, length of residence, and admission class play in determining settlement outcomes of recent immigrants in Lethbridge, Alberta.
