Search

The last few years have seen the emergence of a wide array of novel techniques for analyzing high-precision data from upcoming galaxy surveys, which aim to extend the statistical analysis of galaxy clustering data beyond the linear regime and the canonical two-point (2pt) statistics. We test and benchmark some of these new techniques in a community data challenge "Beyond-2pt", initiated during the Aspen 2022 Summer Program "Large-Scale Structure Cosmology beyond 2-Point Statistics," whose first round of results we present here. The challenge dataset consists of high-precision mock galaxy catalogs for clustering in real space, redshift space, and on a light cone. Participants in the challenge have developed end-to-end pipelines to analyze mock catalogs and extract unknown ("masked") cosmological parameters of the underlying $\Lambda$CDM models with their methods. The methods represented are density-split clustering, nearest neighbor statistics, BACCO power spectrum emulator, void statistics, LEFTfield field-level inference using effective field theory (EFT), and joint power spectrum and bispectrum analyses using both EFT and simulation-based inference. In this work, we review the results of the challenge, focusing on problems solved, lessons learned, and future research needed to perfect the emerging beyond-2pt approaches. The unbiased parameter recovery demonstrated in this challenge by multiple statistics and the associated modeling and inference frameworks supports the credibility of cosmology constraints from these methods. Massive particles leave imprints on primordial non-Gaussianity via couplings to the inflaton, even despite their exponential dilution during inflation: practically, the Universe acts as a Cosmological Collider. We present the first dedicated search for spin-zero particles using BOSS redshift-space galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum multipoles, as well as Planck CMB non-Gaussianity data. We demonstrate that some Cosmological Collider models are well approximated by the standard equilateral and orthogonal parametrization; assuming negligible inflaton self-interactions, this facilitates us translating Planck non-Gaussianity constraints into bounds on Collider models. Many models have signatures that are not degenerate with equilateral and orthogonal non-Gaussianity and thus require dedicated searches. Here, we constrain such models using BOSS three-dimensional redshift-space galaxy clustering data, focusing on spin-zero particles in the principal series and constraining their couplings to the inflaton at varying speed and mass, marginalizing over the unknown inflaton self-interactions. This is made possible through an improvement in Cosmological Bootstrap techniques and the combination of perturbation theory and halo occupation distribution models for galaxy clustering. We study how well perturbative forward modeling can constrain cosmological parameters compared to conventional analyses. We exploit the fact that in perturbation theory the field-level posterior can be computed analytically in the limit of small noise. In the idealized case where the only relevant parameter for the nonlinear evolution is the nonlinear scale, we argue that information content in this posterior is the same as in the $n$-point correlation functions computed at the same perturbative order. In the real universe other parameters can be important, and there are possibly enhanced effects due to nonlinear interactions of long and short wavelength fluctuations that can either degrade the signal or increase covariance matrices. We identify several different parameters that control these enhancements and show that for some shapes of the linear power spectrum they can be large. This leads to degradation of constraints in the standard analyses, even though the effects are not dramatic for a $\Lambda$CDM-like cosmology. The aforementioned long-short couplings do not affect the field-level inference which remains optimal. Finally, we show how in these examples calculation of the perturbative posterior motivates new estimators that are easier to implement in practice than the full forward modelling but lead to nearly optimal constraints on cosmological parameters., Comment: 33 pages, 1 figure, matches published version

We present a framework for self-consistent cosmological analyses of the full-shape anisotropic bispectrum, including the quadrupole $(\ell=2)$ and hexadecapole $(\ell=4)$ moments. This features a novel window-free algorithm for extracting the latter quantities from data, derived using a maximum-likelihood prescription. Furthermore, we introduce a theoretical model for the bispectrum multipoles (which does not introduce new free parameters), and test both aspects of the pipeline on several high-fidelity mocks, including the PT Challenge suite of gigantic cumulative volume. This establishes that the systematic error is significantly below the statistical threshold, both for the measurement and modeling. As a realistic example, we extract the large-scale bispectrum multipoles from BOSS DR12 and analyze them in combination with the power spectrum data. Assuming a minimal $\Lambda$CDM model, with a BBN prior on the baryon density and a \textit{Planck} prior on $n_s$, we can extract the remaining cosmological parameters directly from the clustering data. The inclusion of the unwindowed higher-order $(\ell>0)$ large-scale bispectrum multipoles is found to moderately improve one-dimensional cosmological parameter posteriors (at the $5\%-10\%$ level), though these multipoles are detected only in three out of four BOSS data segments at $\approx 5\sigma$. Combining information from the power spectrum and bispectrum multipoles, the real space power spectrum, and the post-reconstructed BAO data, we find $H_0 = 68.2\pm 0.8~\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$, $\Omega_m =0.33\pm 0.01$ and $\sigma_8 = 0.736\pm 0.033$ (the tightest yet found in perturbative full-shape analyses). We search for ultra-light axions as dark matter (DM) and dark energy particle candidates, for axion masses $10^{-32}\,\mathrm{eV} \leq m_\mathrm{a} \leq 10^{-24}\,\mathrm{eV}$, by a joint analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galaxy clustering data -- and consider if axions can resolve the tension in inferred values of the matter clustering parameter $S_8$. We give legacy constraints from Planck 2018 CMB data, improving 2015 limits on the axion density $\Omega_\mathrm{a} h^2$ by up to a factor of three; CMB data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the South Pole Telescope marginally weaken Planck bounds at $m_\mathrm{a} = 10^{-25}\,\mathrm{eV}$, owing to lower (and theoretically-consistent) gravitational lensing signals. We jointly infer, from Planck CMB and full-shape galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), that axions are, today, $< 10\%$ of the DM for $m_\mathrm{a} \leq 10^{-26}\,\mathrm{eV}$ and $< 1\%$ for $10^{-30}\,\mathrm{eV} \leq m_\mathrm{a} \leq 10^{-28}\,\mathrm{eV}$. BOSS data strengthen limits, in particular at higher $m_\mathrm{a}$ by probing high-wavenumber modes ($k < 0.4 h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$). BOSS alone finds a preference for axions at $2.7 \sigma$, for $m_\mathrm{a} = 10^{-26}\,\mathrm{eV}$, but Planck disfavours this result. Nonetheless, axions in a window $10^{-28}\,\mathrm{eV} \leq m_\mathrm{a} \leq 10^{-25}\,\mathrm{eV}$ can improve consistency between CMB and galaxy clustering data, e.g., reducing the $S_8$ discrepancy from $2.7 \sigma$ to $1.6 \sigma$, since these axions suppress structure growth at the $8 h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ scales to which $S_8$ is sensitive. We expect improved constraints with upcoming high-resolution CMB and galaxy lensing and future galaxy clustering data, where we will further assess if axions can restore cosmic concordance., Comment: 53 pages, 22 figures. We forecast the constraints on single-field inflation from the bispectrum of future high-redshift surveys such as MegaMapper. Considering non-local primordial non-Gaussianity (NLPNG), we find that current methods will yield constraints of order $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq})\approx 23$, $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth})\approx 12$ in a joint power-spectrum and bispectrum analysis, varying both nuisance parameters and cosmology, including a conservative range of scales. Fixing cosmological parameters and quadratic bias parameter relations, the limits tighten significantly to $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq})\approx 17$, $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth})\approx 8$. These compare favorably with the forecasted bounds from CMB-S4: $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq})\approx 21$, $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth})\approx 9$, with a combined constraint of $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq})\approx 14$, $\sigma(f_{\rm NL}^{\rm orth})\approx 7$; this weakens only slightly if one instead combines with data from the Simons Observatory. We additionally perform a range of Fisher analyses for the error, forecasting the dependence on nuisance parameter marginalization, scale cuts, and survey strategy. Lack of knowledge of bias and counterterm parameters is found to significantly limit the information content; this could be ameliorated by tight simulation-based priors on the nuisance parameters. The error-bars decrease significantly as the number of observed galaxies and survey depth is increased: as expected, deep dense surveys are the most constraining, though it will be difficult to reach $\sigma(f_{\rm NL})\approx 1$ with current methods. Could new physics break the mirror symmetry of the Universe? Utilizing recent measurements of the parity-odd four-point correlation function of BOSS galaxies, we probe the physics of inflation by placing constraints on the amplitude of a number of parity-violating models. Within canonical models of (single-field, slow-roll) inflation, no parity-asymmetry can occur; however, it has recently been shown that breaking of the standard assumptions can lead to parity violation within the Effective Field Theory of Inflation (EFTI). In particular, we consider the Ghost Condensate and Cosmological Collider scenarios -- the former for the leading and subleading operators in the EFTI and the latter for different values of mass and speed of an exchanged spin-$1$ particle -- for a total of $18$ models. Each instance yields a definite prediction for the inflationary trispectrum, which we convert to a late-time galaxy correlator prediction (through a highly non-trivial calculation) and constrain using the observed data. We find no evidence for inflationary parity-violation (with each of the $18$ models having significances below $2\sigma$), and place the first constraints on the relevant coupling strengths, at a level comparable with the theoretical perturbativity bounds. This is also the first time Cosmological Collider signatures have directly been searched for in observational data. We further show that possible secondary parity-violating signatures in galaxy clustering can be systematically described within the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure. We argue that these late-time contributions are subdominant compared to the primordial parity-odd signal for a vast region of parameter space. We derive a set of no-go theorems and yes-go examples for the parity-odd primordial trispectrum of curvature perturbations. We work at tree-level in the decoupling limit of the Effective Field Theory of Inflation and assume scale invariance and a Bunch-Davies vacuum. We show that the parity-odd scalar trispectrum vanishes in the presence of any number of scalar fields with arbitrary mass and any parity-odd scalar correlator vanishes in the presence of any number of spinning fields with massless de Sitter mode functions, in agreement with the findings of Liu, Tong, Wang and Xianyu [1]. The same is true for correlators with an odd number of conformally-coupled external fields. We derive these results using both the (boostless) cosmological bootstrap, in particular the Cosmological Optical Theorem, and explicit perturbative calculations. We then discuss a series of yes-go examples by relaxing the above assumptions one at the time. In particular, we provide explicit results for the parity-odd trispectrum for (i) violations of scale invariance in single-clock inflation, (ii) the modified dispersion relation of the ghost condensate (non-Bunch-Davies vacuum), and (iii) interactions with massive spinning fields. We derive parity-even graviton bispectra in the Effective Field Theory of Inflation (EFToI) to all orders in derivatives. Working in perturbation theory, we construct all cubic interactions that can contribute to tree-level graviton bispectra, showing that they all come from EFToI operators containing two or three powers of the extrinsic curvature and its covariant derivatives: all other operators can be removed by field redefinitions or start at higher-order in perturbations. For operators cubic in the extrinsic curvature, where the single-clock consistency relations are satisfied without a correction to the graviton two-point function, we use the Manifestly Local Test (MLT) to efficiently extract the effects of evolving graviton fluctuations to the end of inflation. Despite the somewhat complicated nature of the bulk interactions, the final boundary correlators take a very compact form. For operators quadratic in the extrinsic curvature, the leading order bispectra are a sum of contact and single exchange diagrams, which are tied together by spatial diffeomorphisms, and to all orders in derivatives we derive these bispectra by computing the necessary bulk time integrals. For single exchange diagrams we exploit factorisation properties of the bulk-bulk propagator for massless gravitons and write the result as a finite sum over residues. Perhaps surprisingly, we show these single exchange contributions have only total-energy poles and also satisfy the MLT.

We study the cosmological information content of the redshift-space galaxy bispectrum monopole at one-loop order in perturbation theory. We incorporate all effects necessary for comparison to data: fourth-order galaxy bias, infrared resummation (accounting for the non-linear evolution of baryon acoustic oscillations), ultraviolet counterterms, non-linear redshift-space distortions, stochastic contributions, projection, and binning effects. The model is implemented using FFTLog, and validated with the PT Challenge suite of $N$-body simulations, whose large volume allows for high-precision tests. Focusing on the mass fluctuation amplitude, $\sigma_8$, and galaxy bias parameters, we find that including one-loop corrections allow us to significantly extend the range of scales over which the bispectrum can be modeled, and greatly tightens constraints on bias parameters. However, this does not lead to noticeable improvements in the $\sigma_8$ errorbar due to the necessary marginalization over a large number of nuisance parameters with conservative priors. Analyzing a BOSS-volume likelihood, we find that the addition of the one-loop bispectrum may lead to improvements on primordial non-Gaussianity constraints by $\lesssim 30\%$ and on $\sigma_8$ by $\approx 10\%$, though we caution that this requires pushing the analysis to short scales where the galaxy bias parameters may not be correctly recovered; this may lead to biases in the recovered parameter values. We use redshift-space galaxy clustering data from the BOSS survey to constrain local primordial non-Gaussianity (LPNG). This is of particular importance due to the consistency relations, which imply that a detection of LPNG would rule out all single-field inflationary models. Our constraints are based on the consistently analyzed redshift-space galaxy power spectra and bispectra, extracted from the public BOSS data with optimal window-free estimators. We use a complete perturbation theory model including all one-loop power spectrum corrections generated by LPNG. Our constraint on the amplitude of the local non-Gaussian shape is $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm local}=-33\pm 28$ at 68\%\,CL, yielding no evidence for primordial non-Gaussianity. The addition of the bispectrum tightens the $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm local}$ constraints from BOSS by $20\%$, and allows breaking of degeneracies with non-Gaussian galaxy bias. These results set the stage for the analysis of future surveys, whose larger volumes will yield significantly tighter constraints on LPNG., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Small fluctuations around homogeneous and isotropic expanding backgrounds are the main object of study in cosmology. Their origin and evolution is sensitive to the physical processes that happen during inflation and in the late Universe. As such, they hold the key to answering many of the major open questions in cosmology. Given a large separation of relevant scales in many examples of interest, the most natural description of these fluctuations is formulated in terms of effective field theories. This was the main avenue for many of the important modern developments in theoretical cosmology, which provided a unifying framework for a plethora of cosmological models and made a clear connection between the fundamental cosmological parameters and observables. In this review we summarize these results in the context of effective field theories of inflation, large-scale structure, and dark energy., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Cosmic inflation provides a window to the highest energy densities accessible in nature, far beyond those achievable in any realistic terrestrial experiment. Theoretical insights into the inflationary era and its observational probes may therefore shed unique light on the physical laws underlying our universe. This white paper describes our current theoretical understanding of the inflationary era, with a focus on the statistical properties of primordial fluctuations. In particular, we survey observational targets for three important signatures of inflation: primordial gravitational waves, primordial non-Gaussianity and primordial features. With the requisite advancements in analysis techniques, the tremendous increase in the raw sensitivities of upcoming and planned surveys will translate to leaps in our understanding of the inflationary paradigm and could open new frontiers for cosmology and particle physics. Non-local primordial non-Gaussianity (NLPNG) is a smoking gun of interactions in single-field inflationary models, and can be written as a combination of the equilateral and orthogonal templates. We present the first constraints on these from the redshift-space galaxy power spectra and bispectra of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) data. These are the first such measurements independent of the cosmic microwave background fluctuations. We perform a consistent analysis that includes all necessary nonlinear corrections generated by NLPNG, and vary all relevant cosmological and nuisance parameters in a global fit to the data. Our conservative analysis yields joint limits on the amplitudes of the equilateral and orthogonal shapes, $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm equil}=940\pm 600$, $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm ortho}= -170\pm 170$ (both at 68\% CL). These can be used to derive constraints on coefficients of the effective single-field inflationary Lagrangian; in particular, we find that the sound speed of inflaton fluctuations has the bound $c_s\geq 0.013$ at 95\% CL. Gravitational interferometers and cosmological observations of the cosmic microwave background offer us the prospect to probe the laws of gravity in the primordial universe. To study and interpret these datasets we need to know the possible graviton non-Gaussianities. To this end, we derive the most general tree-level three-point functions (bispectra) for a massless graviton to all orders in derivatives, assuming scale invariance. Instead of working with explicit Lagrangians, we take a bootstrap approach and obtain our results using the recently derived constraints from unitarity, locality and the choice of vacuum. Since we make no assumptions about de Sitter boosts, our results capture the phenomenology of large classes of models such as the effective field theory of inflation and solid inflation. We present formulae for the infinite number of parity-even bispectra. Remarkably, for parity-odd bispectra, we show that unitarity allows for only a handful of possible shapes: three for graviton-graviton-graviton, three for scalar-graviton-graviton and one for scalar-scalar-graviton, which we bootstrap explicitly. We characterize graviton non-Gaussianities in models of inflation where de Sitter boosts are spontaneously broken. We discuss which of the symmetry breaking patterns studied in Nicolis et al., 2015 can sustain a period of quasi de Sitter expansion, and show that the symmetry breaking pattern of Solid Inflation allows the most freedom for graviton interactions. We comment on the phenomenological consequences of some of these interactions. As a byproduct of this analysis we construct the "EFT of Solid Inflation", which has all the useful features of the EFT of Inflation but for the case of broken spatial diffeomorphisms., Comment: 14 pages, 1 table, matches JCAP version

We study the EFT likelihood for biased tracers in redshift space, for which the bias expansion of the galaxy velocity field $\mathbf{v}_g$ plays a fundamental role. The equivalence principle forbids stochastic contributions to $\mathbf{v}_g$ to survive at small $k$. Therefore, at leading order in derivatives the form of the likelihood ${\cal P}[\tilde{\delta}_g|\delta,\!\mathbf{v}]$ to observe a redshift-space galaxy overdensity $\tilde{\delta}_g(\tilde{\mathbf{x}})$ given a rest-frame matter and velocity fields $\delta(\mathbf{x})$, $\mathbf{v}(\mathbf{x})$ is fixed by the rest-frame noise. If this noise is Gaussian with constant power spectrum, ${\cal P}[\tilde{\delta}_g|\delta,\!\mathbf{v}]$ is also a Gaussian in the difference between $\tilde{\delta}_g(\tilde{\mathbf{x}})$ and its bias expansion: redshift-space distortions only make the covariance depend on $\delta(\mathbf{x})$ and $\mathbf{v}(\mathbf{x})$. We then show how to match this result to perturbation theory, and that one can consistently neglect the field-dependent covariance if the bias expansion is stopped at second order in perturbations. We discuss qualitatively how this affects numerical implementations of the EFT-based forward modeling, and how the picture changes when the survey window function is taken into account., Comment: 33 pages (29+4), 1 figure, matches published version

We study the impact that large-scale perturbations of (i) the matter density and (ii) the primordial gravitational potential with local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) have on galaxy formation using the IllustrisTNG model. We focus on the linear galaxy bias $b_1$ and the coefficient $b_\phi$ of the scale-dependent bias induced by PNG, which describe the response of galaxy number counts to these two types of perturbations, respectively. We perform our study using separate universe simulations, in which the effect of the perturbations is mimicked by changes to the cosmological parameters: modified cosmic matter density for $b_1$ and modified amplitude $\mathcal{A}_s$ of the primordial scalar power spectrum for $b_\phi$. We find that the widely used universality relation $b_\phi = 2\delta_c(b_1 - 1)$ is a poor description of the bias of haloes and galaxies selected by stellar mass $M_*$, which is instead described better by $b_\phi(M_*) = 2\delta_c(b_1(M_*) - p)$ with $p \in [0.4, 0.7]$. This is explained by the different impact that matter overdensities and local PNG have on the median stellar-to-halo-mass relation. A simple model of this impact allows us to describe the stellar mass dependence of $b_1$ and $b_\phi$ fairly well. Our results also show a nontrivial relation between $b_1$ and $b_\phi$ for galaxies selected by color and black hole mass accretion rate. Our results provide refined priors on $b_\phi$ for local PNG constraints and forecasts using galaxy clustering. Given that the widely used universality relation underpredicts $b_\phi(M_*)$, existing analyses may underestimate the true constraining power on local PNG., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. We present updates on the cosmology inference using the effective field theory (EFT) likelihood presented previously in Schmidt et al., 2018, Elsner et al., 2019 [1,2]. Specifically, we add a cutoff to the initial conditions that serve as starting point for the matter forward model. We show that this cutoff, which was not employed in any previous related work, is important to regularize loop integrals that otherwise involve small-scale, non-perturbative modes. We then present results on the inferred value of the linear power spectrum normalization $\sigma_{8}$ from rest-frame halo catalogs using both second- and third-order bias expansions, imposing uniform priors on all bias parameters. Due to the perfect bias-$\sigma_{8}$ degeneracy at linear order, constraints on $\sigma_{8}$ rely entirely on nonlinear information. The results show the expected convergence behavior when lowering the cutoff in wavenumber, $\Lambda$. When including modes up to $k \leq \Lambda = 0.1\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ in the second-order case, $\sigma_{8}$ is recovered to within $\lesssim 6\,\%$ for a range of halo masses and redshifts. The systematic bias shrinks to $4\,\%$ or less for the third-order bias expansion on the same range of scales. Together with additional evidence we provide, this shows that the residual mismatch in $\sigma_{8}$ can be attributed to higher-order bias contributions. We study graviton non-Gaussianities in the EFT of Inflation. At leading (second) order in derivatives, the graviton bispectrum is fixed by Einstein gravity. There are only two contributions at third order. One of them breaks parity. They come from operators that directly involve the foliation: we then expect sizable non-Gaussianities in three-point functions involving both gravitons and scalars. However, we show that at leading order in slow roll the parity-odd operator does not modify these mixed correlators. We then identify the operators that can affect the graviton bispectrum at fourth order in derivatives. There are two operators that preserve parity. We show that one gives a scalar-tensor-tensor three-point function larger than the one computed in Maldacena, 2003 if $M^2_{\rm P}A_{\rm s}/\Lambda^2\gg 1$ (where $\Lambda$ is the scale suppressing this operator and $A_{\rm s}$ the amplitude of the scalar power spectrum). In the EFT of biased tracers the noise field $\varepsilon_g$ is not exactly uncorrelated with the nonlinear matter field $\delta$. Its correlation with $\delta$ is effectively captured by adding stochasticities to each bias coefficient. We show that if these stochastic fields are Gaussian (the impact of their non-Gaussianity being subleading on quasi-linear scales anyway) it is possible to resum exactly their effect on the conditional likelihood ${\cal P}[\delta_g|\delta]$ to observe a galaxy field $\delta_g$ given an underlying $\delta$. This resummation allows to take them into account in EFT-based approaches to Bayesian forward modeling. We stress that the resulting corrections to a purely Gaussian conditional likelihood with white-noise covariance are the most relevant on scales where the EFT is under control: they are more important than any non-Gaussianity of the noise $\varepsilon_g$., Comment: 15 pages. v2: very minor change in Eqs. We investigate the potential of the galaxy power spectrum to constrain compensated isocurvature perturbations (CIPs), primordial fluctuations in the baryon density that are compensated by fluctuations in CDM density to ensure an unperturbed total matter density. We show that CIPs contribute to the galaxy overdensity at linear order, and if they are close to scale-invariant, their effects are nearly perfectly degenerate with the local PNG parameter $f_{\rm nl}$ if they correlate with the adiabatic perturbations. This degeneracy can however be broken by analyzing multiple galaxy samples with different bias parameters, or by taking CMB priors on $f_{\rm nl}$ into account. Parametrizing the amplitude of the CIP power spectrum as $P_{\sigma\sigma} = A^2P_{\mathcal{R}\mathcal{R}}$ (where $P_{\mathcal{R}\mathcal{R}}$ is the adiabatic power spectrum) we find, for a number of fiducial galaxy samples in a simplified forecast setup, that constraints on $A$, relative to those on $f_{\rm nl}$, of order $\sigma_{A}/\sigma_{f_{\rm nl}} \approx 1-2$ are achievable for CIPs correlated with adiabatic perturbations, and $\sigma_{A}/\sigma_{f_{\rm nl}} \approx 5$ for the uncorrelated case. These values are independent of survey volume, and suggest that current galaxy data are already able to improve significantly on the tightest existing constraints on CIPs from the CMB. We derive, using functional methods and the bias expansion, the conditional likelihood for observing a specific tracer field given an underlying matter field. This likelihood is necessary for Bayesian-inference methods. If we neglect all stochastic terms apart from the ones appearing in the auto two-point function of tracers, we recover the result of Schmidt et al., 2018. We then rigorously derive the corrections to this result, such as those coming from a non-Gaussian stochasticity (which include the stochastic corrections to the tracer bispectrum) and higher-derivative terms. We discuss how these corrections can affect current applications of Bayesian inference. We comment on possible extensions to our result, with a particular eye towards primordial non-Gaussianity. We study the impact that baryon-CDM relative density perturbations $\delta_{bc}$ have on galaxy formation using cosmological simulations with the IllustrisTNG model. These isocurvature (non-adiabatic) perturbations can be induced primordially, if multiple fields are present during inflation, and are generated before baryon-photon decoupling when baryons did not comove with CDM. The presence of long-wavelength $\delta_{bc}$ perturbations in our simulations is mimicked by modifying the ratios of the cosmic densities of baryons $\Omega_b$ and CDM $\Omega_c$, at fixed total matter density $\Omega_m$. We measure the corresponding galaxy bias parameter $b_{\delta}^{bc}$ as the response of galaxy abundances to $\delta_{bc}$. When selecting by total host halo mass, $b_{\delta}^{bc}$ is negative and it decreases with mass and redshift. Stellar-mass selected simulated galaxies show a weaker or even the opposite trend because of the competing effects of $\delta_{bc}$ on the halo mass function and stellar-to-halo-mass relations. We show that simple modeling of the latter two effects describes $b_{\delta}^{bc}$ for stellar-mass-selected objects well. We find $b_{\delta}^{bc} =0.6$ for $M_* = 10^{11}\ M_{\odot}/h$ and $z=0.5$, which is representative of BOSS DR12 galaxies. For $\delta_{bc}$ modes generated by baryon-photon interactions, we estimate the impact on the DR12 power spectrum to be below $1\%$, and shifts on inferred distance and growth rate parameters should not exceed $0.1\%$., Comment: 18 pages (+8 pages with appendices and references); 8 figures; 1 table; comments welcomed. We investigate the degree to which the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) can be used to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity coming from the presence of spinning particles coupled to the inflaton. We compute the $\langle TTT \rangle$ and $\langle TTTT \rangle$ correlation functions arising from the exchange of a particle with spin $s$ and generic mass, and the corresponding signal-to-noise ratios for a cosmic-variance-limited CMB experiment. We show that already with \emph{Planck} data one could improve the theoretical bounds on the amplitude of these primordial templates by an order of magnitude. We particularly emphasize the fact that the trispectrum could be sizable even if the bispectrum is not, making it a prime observable to explore the particle content during inflation., Comment: v4: 26 pages, 6 figures. The fact that the spatial nonlocality of galaxy formation is controlled by some short length scale like the Lagrangian radius is the cornerstone of the bias expansion for large-scale-structure tracers. However, the first sources of ionizing radiation between $z\approx 15$ and $z\approx 6$ are expected to have significant effects on the formation of galaxies we observe at lower redshift, at least on low-mass galaxies. These radiative-transfer effects introduce a new scale in the clustering of galaxies, i.e. the finite distance which ionizing radiation travels until it reaches a given galaxy. This mean free path can be very large, of order $100\,h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc}$. Consequently, higher-derivative terms in the bias expansion could turn out to be non-negligible even on these scales: treating them perturbatively would lead to a massive loss in predictivity and, for example, could spoil the determination of the BAO feature or constraints on the neutrino mass. Here, we investigate under what assumptions an explicit non-perturbative model of radiative-transfer effects can maintain the robustness of large-scale galaxy clustering as a cosmological probe., Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. Distortions of the Cosmic Microwave Background energy spectrum of the $\mu$ type are sensitive to the primordial power spectrum through the dissipation of curvature perturbations on scales $k\simeq 50$ - $10^4\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. Their angular correlation with large-scale temperature anisotropies is then sensitive to the squeezed limit of the primordial bispectrum. For inflationary models obeying the single-field consistency relation, we show that the observed $\mu T$ angular correlation that would correspond to the local shape vanishes exactly. All leading non-primordial contributions, including all non-linear production and projection effects, are of the "equilateral shape", namely suppressed by $k^2/{\cal H}_f^2$, where ${\cal H}_f\simeq 10^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ is the Hubble radius at the end of the $\mu$-era. Therefore, these non-primordial contributions are orthogonal to a potential local primordial signal (e.g. from multi-field inflation). Moreover, they are very small in amplitude. Long-short mode coupling during inflation, encoded in the squeezed bispectrum of curvature perturbations, induces a dependence of the local, small-scale power spectrum on long-wavelength perturbations, leading to a scale-dependent halo bias. While this scale dependence is absent in the large-scale limit for single-field inflation models that satisfy the consistency relation, certain models such as resonant non-Gaussianity show a peculiar behavior on intermediate scales. We reconsider the predictions for the halo bias in this model by working in Conformal Fermi Coordinates, which isolate the physical effects of long-wavelength perturbations on short-scale physics. We find that the bias oscillates with scale with an envelope similar to that of equilateral non-Gaussianity. Moreover, the bias shows a peculiar modulation with the halo mass. Unfortunately, we find that upcoming surveys will be unable to detect the signal because of its very small amplitude. We discuss whether an unaccounted contribution to the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization $B$-mode by primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) can bias future constraints on inflationary gravitational waves. As a case-study, we consider a scale-invariant PMF spectrum with amplitude of $\approx{1}\,{\mathrm{nG}}$ on $1\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ scales, compatible with current cosmological bounds. We find a degeneracy in the $B$-mode spectra between PMFs and inflationary gravitational waves. If PMFs of this amplitude are not accounted for, future CMB experiments could claim a false detection of a tensor-to-scalar ratio $r\approx 0.007$, close to the predictions of Starobinsky and $\alpha$-attractor models. The degeneracy can be broken if $B$-modes are measured also at multipoles $\ell\gtrsim 900$: more precisely experiments like CMB-S4 or CORE-M5 would be able to discriminate PMFs from primordial GWs at high statistical significance. Experiments like LiteBIRD or PIXIE will not be able to break the degeneracy and will need complementary bounds coming, for example, from measurements of anisotropies in the Faraday rotation angle of CMB polarization. We study generalized disformal transformations, including derivatives of the metric, in the context of the Effective Field Theory of Inflation. All these transformations do not change the late-time cosmological observables but change the coefficients of the operators in the action: some couplings are effectively redundant. At leading order in derivatives and up to cubic order in perturbations, one has 6 free functions that can be used to set to zero 6 of the 17 operators at this order. This is used to show that the tensor three-point function cannot be modified at leading order in derivatives, while the scalar-tensor-tensor correlator can only be modified by changing the scalar dynamics. At higher order in derivatives there are transformations that do not affect the Einstein-Hilbert action: one can find 6 additional transformations that can be used to simplify the inflaton action, at least when the dynamics is dominated by the lowest derivative terms. Gravity is a non-linear theory, and hence, barring cancellations, the initial super-horizon perturbations produced by inflation must contain some minimum amount of mode coupling, or primordial non-Gaussianity. In single-field slow-roll models, where this lower bound is saturated, non-Gaussianity is controlled by two observables: the tensor-to-scalar ratio, which is uncertain by more than fifty orders of magnitude; and the scalar spectral index, or tilt, which is relatively well measured. It is well known that to leading and next-to-leading order in derivatives, the contributions proportional to the tilt disappear from any local observable, and suspicion has been raised that this might happen to all orders, allowing for an arbitrarily low amount of primordial non-Gaussianity. Employing Conformal Fermi Coordinates, we show explicitly that this is not the case. Instead, a contribution of order the tilt appears in local observables. We forecast the main cosmological parameter constraints achievable with the CORE space mission which is dedicated to mapping the polarisation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). CORE was recently submitted in response to ESA's fifth call for medium-sized mission proposals (M5). Here we report the results from our pre-submission study of the impact of various instrumental options, in particular the telescope size and sensitivity level, and review the great, transformative potential of the mission as proposed. Specifically, we assess the impact on a broad range of fundamental parameters of our Universe as a function of the expected CMB characteristics, with other papers in the series focusing on controlling astrophysical and instrumental residual systematics. In this paper, we assume that only a few central CORE frequency channels are usable for our purpose, all others being devoted to the cleaning of astrophysical contaminants. On the theoretical side, we assume LCDM as our general framework and quantify the improvement provided by CORE over the current constraints from the Planck 2015 release. We also study the joint sensitivity of CORE and of future Baryon Acoustic Oscillation and Large Scale Structure experiments like DESI and Euclid. Specific constraints on the physics of inflation are presented in another paper of the series. In addition to the six parameters of the base LCDM, which describe the matter content of a spatially flat universe with adiabatic and scalar primordial fluctuations from inflation, we derive the precision achievable on parameters like those describing curvature, neutrino physics, extra light relics, primordial helium abundance, dark matter annihilation, recombination physics, variation of fundamental constants, dark energy, modified gravity, reionization and cosmic birefringence. We use the recent observations of Cosmic Microwave Background temperature and polarization anisotropies provided by the Planck satellite experiment to place constraints on the running $\alpha_\mathrm{s} = \mathrm{d}n_{\mathrm{s}} / \mathrm{d}\log k$ and the running of the running $\beta_{\mathrm{s}} = \mathrm{d}\alpha_{\mathrm{s}} / \mathrm{d}\log k$ of the spectral index $n_{\mathrm{s}}$ of primordial scalar fluctuations. We find $\alpha_\mathrm{s}=0.011\pm0.010$ and $\beta_\mathrm{s}=0.027\pm0.013$ at $68\%\,\mathrm{CL}$, suggesting the presence of a running of the running at the level of two standard deviations. We find no significant correlation between $\beta_{\mathrm{s}}$ and foregrounds parameters, with the exception of the point sources amplitude at $143\,\mathrm{GHz}$, $A^{PS}_{143}$, which shifts by half sigma when the running of the running is considered. We further study the cosmological implications of such preference for $\alpha_\mathrm{s},\beta_\mathrm{s}\sim0.01$ by including in the analysis the lensing amplitude $A_L$, the curvature parameter $\Omega_k$, and the sum of neutrino masses $\sum m_{\nu}$. We find that when the running of the running is considered, Planck data are more compatible with the standard expectations of $A_L = 1$ and $\Omega_k = 0$ but still hint at possible deviations. The indication for $\beta_\mathrm{s} > 0$ survives at two standard deviations when external datasets such as BAO and CFHTLenS are included in the analysis, and persists at $\sim 1.7$ standard deviations when CMB lensing is considered. We discuss the possibility of constraining $\beta_\mathrm{s}$ with current and future measurements of CMB spectral distortions, showing that an experiment like PIXIE could provide strong constraints on $\alpha_\mathrm{s}$ and $\beta_\mathrm{s}$., Comment: 10+1 pages, 9 figures, 10 tables. Recent cosmic microwave background data in temperature and polarization have reached high precision in estimating all the parameters that describe the current so-called standard cosmological model. Recent results about the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect from cosmic microwave background anisotropies, galaxy surveys, and their cross-correlations are presented. Looking at fine signatures in the cosmic microwave background, such as the lack of power at low multipoles, the primordial power spectrum and the bounds on non-Gaussianities, complemented by galaxy surveys, we discuss inflationary physics and the generation of primordial perturbations in the early Universe. Three important topics in particle physics, the bounds on neutrinos masses and parameters, on thermal axion mass and on the neutron lifetime derived from cosmological data are reviewed, with attention to the comparison with laboratory experiment results. Recent results from cosmic polarization rotation analyses aimed at testing the Einstein equivalence principle are presented. We discuss the implications of a PIXIE-like experiment, which would measure $\mu$-type spectral distortions of the CMB at a level of $\sigma_{\mu}=(1/n)\times 10^{-8}$, with $n\geq1$ representing an improved sensitivity (e.g. $n=10$ corresponds to PRISM). Using Planck data and considering the six-parameter $\Lambda$CDM model, we compute the posterior for $\mu_8\equiv\mu\times 10^{8}$ and find $\mu_8=1.57^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$ ($68\%\,\mathrm{CL}$). This becomes $\mu_{8} = 1.28^{+0.30}_{-0.52}$ ($68\%\,\mathrm{CL}$) when the running $\alpha_\mathrm{s}$ of the spectral index is included. We point out that a sensitivity of about $3\times$ PIXIE implies a guaranteed discovery: $\mu$-distortion is detected or $\alpha_\mathrm{s}\geq 0$ is excluded (both at $95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$ or higher). This threshold sensitivity sets a clear benchmark for CMB spectrometry. For a combined analysis of PIXIE and current Planck data, we discuss the improvement on measurements of the tilt $n_\mathrm{s}$ and the running $\alpha_\mathrm{s}$ and the dependence on the choice of the pivot. A fiducial running of $\alpha_\mathrm{s}=-0.01$ (close to the Planck best-fit) leads to a detection of negative running at $2\sigma$ for $5\times$ PIXIE. A fiducial running of $\alpha_\mathrm{s}=-0.02$, still compatible with Planck, requires $3\times$ PIXIE to rule out $\alpha_\mathrm{s} = 0$ (at $95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$). We present new, tight, constraints on the cosmological background of gravitational waves (GWs) using the latest measurements of CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies provided by the Planck, BICEP2 and Keck Array experiments. These constraints are further improved when the GW contribution $N^{\rm GW}_{\rm eff}$ to the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom $N_{\rm eff}$ is also considered. Parametrizing the tensor spectrum as a power law with tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, tilt $n_\mathrm{t}$ and pivot $0.01\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$, and assuming a minimum value of $r=0.001$, we find $r < 0.089$, $n_\mathrm{t} = 1.7^{+2.1}_{-2.0}$ ($95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$, no $N^{\rm GW}_{\rm eff}$) and $r < 0.082$, $n_\mathrm{t} = -0.05^{+0.58}_{-0.87}$ ($95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$, with $N^{\rm GW}_{\rm eff}$). When the recently released $95\,\mathrm{GHz}$ data from Keck Array are added to the analysis, the constraints on $r$ are improved to $r < 0.067$ ($95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$, no $N^{\rm GW}_{\rm eff}$), $r < 0.061$ ($95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$, with $N^{\rm GW}_{\rm eff}$). We discuss the limits coming from direct detection experiments such as LIGO-Virgo, pulsar timing (European Pulsar Timing Array) and CMB spectral distortions (FIRAS). Finally, we show future constraints achievable from a COrE-like mission: if the tensor-to-scalar ratio is of order $10^{-2}$ and the inflationary consistency relation $n_\mathrm{t} = -r/8$ holds, COrE will be able to constrain $n_\mathrm{t}$ with an error of $0.16$ at $95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$. In the case that lensing $B$-modes can be subtracted to $10\%$ of their power, a feasible goal for COrE, these limits will be improved to $0.11$ at $95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$., Comment: 12 + 7 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. The Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect predicts additional anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background due to time variation of the gravitational potential when the expansion of the universe is not matter dominated. The ISW effect is therefore expected in the early universe, due to the presence of relativistic particles at recombination, and in the late universe, when dark energy starts to dominate the expansion. Deviations from the standard picture can be parameterized by $A_{e\text{ISW}}$ and $A_{l\text{ISW}}$, which rescale the overall amplitude of the early and late ISW effects. Analyzing the most recent CMB temperature spectra from the Planck 2015 release, we detect the presence of the early ISW at high significance with $A_{e\mathrm{ISW}} = 1.06\pm0.04$ at 68% CL and an upper limit for the late ISW of $A_{l\mathrm{ISW}} < 1.1$ at 95% CL. The inclusion of the recent polarization data from the Planck experiment results in $A_{e\mathrm{ISW}} = 0.999\pm0.028$ at 68% CL, in better agreement with the value $A_{e\mathrm{ISW}} = 1$ of a standard cosmology. When considering the recent detections of the late ISW coming from correlations between CMB temperature anisotropies and weak lensing, a value of $A_{l\mathrm{ISW}}=0.85\pm0.21$ is predicted at 68% CL, showing a $4\sigma$ evidence. We discuss the stability of our result in the case of an extra relativistic energy component parametrized by the effective neutrino number $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and of a CMB lensing amplitude $A_\mathrm{L}$., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures and 5 tables.
