This paper presents an innovative cross-country analysis focused on the cultural coverage of two countries that have been connected since the colonial period, Brazil and Portugal. Aiming to map editorial patterns (sources, news values, cultural sectors, and people featured) and uncover stereotypes, we selected two reputable newspapers, the Brazilian Folha de S.Paulo and the Portuguese Público. A content analysis was performed on a sample of 1.118 news articles. Both media outlets present an elitist, western-centric, and scholarly notion of culture. We observed asymmetrical trends between the Brazilian and the Portuguese cultural coverage. Aer a period of deceleration of this migratory route, from the mid-second decade of the 21st century, statistical data show that the number of entries of Brazilian immigrants documented in Portugal began to show a growth trend. Following this new flow, which has already been interpreted as a third or even fourth wave of the migratory flow from Brazil to Portugal, it is observed, at the same time, there is a growing interest of the Brazilian and Portuguese media in producing audiovisual content in which these migrations and their subjects are represented. It is in this context of the growth of Brazilian immigration in Portugal, on the one hand, and the increased interest of the Brazilian and Portuguese media in exploring the phenomenon, on the other, in which this work is included. From previous empirical research, this paper aims to offer a more comprehensive reflection on the visuality of migrants and migratory processes. In this sense, inserting itself in a space of disciplinary intersection between Cultural Studies, Communication Sciences and Visual Culture, this work discusses some observed trends that support constructions of the visuality of migrants, such as the change of agency of visual discourse, the structuring of images according to the precepts of visual storytelling and the hyperrealistic configuration of images., Este trabalho recebeu apoio da FCT — Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., no âmbito do POCH – Programa Operacional Capital Humano (POCH), por meio de uma Bolsa de Doutorado (SFRH/BD/137855/2018) e foi desenvolvido no âmbito do projeto “MigraMediaActs – Migrações, media e ativismos em língua#portuguesa: descolonizar paisagens mediáticas e imaginar futuros alternativos” (PTDC/COM-CSS/3121/2021), financiado por fundos nacionais através da FCT — Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.

Os resultados mostram a importância do cinema na discussão crítica de temas como o racismo, a xenofobia e a homofobia na atualidade, Immersed in a world where traditional distinctions between production and reception are blurred, young people are confronted with various images and interpretations of the past. At the same time, their attention is increasingly disputed and fragmented and the use of technological equipment and creative skills are increasingly encouraged. This work aims to fill a gap in research on the role of cinema in the critical (de)construction of young people's points of view about themselves and the world. There are several studies on elite memories, but few focus on how young people make sense of history and how this sense shapes intercultural communication in everyday life. In this article, we are interested in exploring how young people visualize and interpret images and narratives about the legacies of the past in the present. We present some results of 10 focus groups conducted in public schools in Portugal with 69 secondary school students. As a stimulus for the discussion, we used excerpts from films whose themes address the Portuguese dictatorship, colonialism, liberation struggles and intercultural relations. The results of this study show the importance of cinema in the critical discussion of topics such as racism, xenophobia and homophobia today., Inmersos en un mundo en el que las distinciones tradicionales entre producción y recepción se difuminan, los jóvenes se enfrentan a una multiplicidad de imágenes e interpretaciones del pasado. In the contemporary context, where cultural flows intensify, studies on images of otherness can play an important role in reflecting on imaginary dimensions of social representations, as well as in contesting the multiple axes of exclusion. Cinema can be a privileged arena for such studies, as it is situated between the plural universes of media and art, reflecting and often anticipating the trends of its time. In this paper, we analyse the role of cinema as a space for the construction, reproduction, and (re)construction of social representations of identity and migratory experiences. We performed an exploratory analysis of all publicly funded film production in Portugal from 2018 to 2022. In the 359 film synopses analysed, the absence of important terms such as “racism” or “social discrimination” stands out, even in films that address displacement experiences and inclusion difficulties. However, we identified counter-hegemonic images and narratives among the productions, especially considering identity representations. Three films were selected for in-depth analysis: Fruit of Thy Womb, by Fábio Silva (2021); Bustarenga, by Ana Maria Gomes (2019) and Nha Sunhu, by José Magro (2021). In the analyses, we discussed the “language of images” and how the productions portray issues such as intercultural and intergenerational dialogue, gender stereotypes and racism, considering factors such as distance, angle, and gaze. We highlight the importance of greater visibility for films like these, capable of expanding the discussion of important social issues and combating the asymmetric circulation of stories and memories, a crucial factor for social change. Entrevistas - Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically exacerbated pre-existing social inequalities and added urgency to the awareness of the need for social transformation. Social movements for the decolonisation of knowledge and governance systems have gained new momentum and the demands for historical reparation and climate, health and food justice. Historical reparation has sometimes been equated only to restitution of material goods or financial compensation. Still, it is a much more complex endeavour that necessarily involves making knowledge production a more engaging and participatory process, inside and outside the academy, linking different knowledge to build fairer and more inclusive futures...

This article proposes an analysis grid to systematise the study of images in history textbooks, based on textbooks from Mozambique and Portugal, within the research project Memories, cultures and identities: the past and the present of intercultural relations in Mozambique and Portugal. The analysis grid aims at the quantitative treatment of the images and the descriptive and interpretative decoding of the iconographic set and respective captions, opening up possibilities for comparative analysis. In this way, we intend to formalise an analysis structure that can contribute to future studies in analysing textbooks’ images. This research starts from the premise that images are sources of knowledge and have an important role in the production and dissemination of worldviews to be analysed within the scope of studies of social representations., Este artigo foi 3nanciado no âmbito da “Knowledge for Development Initiative”, pela Rede Aga Khan para o Desenvolvimento e pela FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, IP (nº 333162622), no contexto do projeto “Memories, cultures and identities: how the past weights on the present-day intercultural relations in Mozambique and Portugal?”.

O mapeamento das ausências e dos silêncios torna evidente um presente marcado pela colonialidade do poder e do saber, e um futuro próximo imaginado como branco e envelhecido., Textbooks have been a privileged instrument for the dissemination of hegem onic narratives about the past and the construction of referentials of identity and alterity. The way borders operate, which categories are invoked and how they are reified at each moment, which ones are blurred and which ones are reinforced in the textbooks are some of the essential aspects that need to be analysed. In recent decades, several international organizations have stressed the importance of history education to promote “interculturality”, dismantle “prejudices” and build a “culture of peace”. In this chapter, we will examine the representations of the “Lusophone world” in the history textbooks currently used in secondary education in Portugal. Based on a transdisciplinary theoretical model, we will undertake an exploratory analysis, taking into account text (verbal and visual) and context. We will pay particular attention to images of people and how these are used to reinforce or challenge hegemonic representations about national his tory and the future of the “privileged relations” with Portuguese-speaking countries. Based on a case study, we demonstrate that, despite the occasional inclusion of “visions of the other” about “sensitive” periods of national history, the textbooks continue to convey racial hierarchizations and reinforce a Eurocentric and androcentric vision of history. The mapping of absences and silences makes evident a present marked by the coloniality of power and knowledge.

In this chapter, we undertake a diachronic analysis of the content of Mozambican history textbooks, since the country’s independence in 1975. We identified four main periods in the Mozambican education system over the last fifty years. First (1975-1983), breaking with colonial education. Second (1983-1992), implementing a “socialist” education. Third (1992-2004/8), promoting “Mozambicanness” with curricular reform after the 16-year civil war. Fourth (since 2004/8), aiming at “multicultural” education. In all these periods, the colonial liberation struggles in Mozambique are presented as the core of the national building process. Although there are changes in the type of language used over time, the schematic narrative templates remain similar, emphasising the need of national unity under the leadership of the ruling political elite.

Women in current history textbooks in Portuguese education continue to be stereotyped and invisible as historical agents. Many images of women appear to illustrate family life, royalty, art, beauty and consumption. A few ‘exceptional’ women are presented as being ‘the first’ in activities considered masculine. These ‘addendum women’ seem to have been added to include female faces without challenging androcentrism. “Knowledge for Development Initiative” by the Aga Khan Development Network and the FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, IP (no. 333162622)

Considering the increasing number of Brazilians migrating to Portugal in the last years, we conducted Life Stories interviews with 25 Brazilians who migrated to the North of Portugal from 2015 onwards, analysing their perceptions about their migration experience. The findings were analysed in the light of Cultural Studies and Social Psychology theories, uncovering texts and contexts about the case of Brazilian migration to Portugal., The development of this work received the support of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P., by the means of a doctoral grant with the reference SFRH/BD/137855/208, within the scope of the Human Capital Operational Program (POCH). Às vezes, querendo desmontar um determinado estereótipo, reforçam-se, ainda que involuntariamente, outros., Este artigo é desenvolvido no âmbito da “Knowledge for Development Initiative”, pela Rede Aga Khan para o Desenvolvimento e pela FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, IP (n.º 333162622) no contexto do projeto “Memories, cultures and identities: how the past weights on the present-day intercultural relations in Mozambique and Portugal?”. The Internet is increasingly prominent in all walks of life, and Web connection is a key factor in social integration. The rise in life expectancy and quality of life mean that our active seniors now represent a growing sector in society. This study analyses what senior citizens use the Internet for and why, as well as the main benefits of its usage and the perceived obstacles of those who are non-users. The results derive from a questionnaire completed by senior citizens enrolled on university courses for older people, and they show that university seniors frequently connect to the Internet –daily or 2 or 3 times per week–, and use it mainly to look up facts, contact family and friends, for course work and to read the press. They consider the Internet easy to use but they could survive without it. For those who do not have access to the Internet, lack of knowledge about how to use it is the main barrier; yet they do not consider themselves incapable of learning how to use the Internet if they wished to do so. The data gathered from the survey challenge negative stereotypes of older people, and encourage us to modify our view of active seniors as disconnected from and incapable of using the Web and instead see their progress and motivation to learn as something highly positive.

Gibson and Noret's (2010 [this issue]) critique of Paez et al.'s (2008) article on 'remembering' World War II and willingness to fight applies social constructionist epistemologies based on hermeneutics to large-scale cross-cultural research. In criticizing our operationalization of historical experience, they privilege micro-analysis of discursive features that cannot be applied equally to different cultures; with regards to remembering, they identify the context-specific evocation of a particular aspect of collective remembering with collective memory in general. Their criticism of the wording of the central question on willingness to fight for one's country is misplaced because this item comes from country-level data from the World Values Survey. Our work, involving 3,322 participants from 22 societies with at least 14 different majority languages, provides analysis of a general phenomenon and cannot be expected to incorporate micro-analysis of local discursive features. Cross-cultural psychology has advanced into a position of international prominence by using quantitative measures to construct nomological or associational networks that create complementary (and alternative) conceptions of meaning to the 'thick descriptions' of ethnography favored by cultural anthropology. A division of labor with respect to these fields and across projects is recommended.

Collective memory -- Research ,College students -- Psychological aspects ,Ethnicity -- Research ,Psychology and mental health - Abstract
Following open-ended methodology used in an earlier research by Liu et al., social representations of world history were assessed among university student samples in 12 countries: China, India, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, East Timor, Turkey, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Spain, and Portugal. Findings confirmed that across cultures, transcending boundaries of political ideology, civilization age, or youthful statehood. (a) World history is represented as a story about politics and warfare, with World War II the most important event in history and Hitler its most influential individual. (b) Recency effects are pervasive in young adults' collective remembering, with events and figures from the past 100 years accounting for 72% and 78% of nominations on average. (c) Representations were primarily Eurocentric, with events and figures in Western societies accounting for 40% of nominations overall, but this is tempered by nationalism, especially in the prevalence of local heroes instrumental to the founding of the current state. The representational hegemony of the victorious Western powers of World War II is being challenged by negative evaluations of the American presidency following 9/11 (September 9) and the Iraq War, with George Bush Jr. perceived as more negative than Hitler in four out of six samples where they were both nominated as important. Results are interpreted within a theoretical framework of history and identity, where collective remembering of the past is dynamically interlinked to political issues of the present. Students from 22 nations answered a survey on the most important events in world history. At the national level, free recalling and a positive evaluation of World War II (WWII) were associated with World Values Survey willingness to fight for the country in a war and being a victorious nation. Willingness to fight, a more benign evaluation of WWII, and recall of WWII were associated with nation-level scores on power distance and low postmaterialism, suggesting that values stressing obedience and competition between nations are associated with support for collective violence, whereas values of expressive individualism are negatively related. Internal political violence was unrelated to willingness to fight, excluding direct learning as an explanation of legitimization of violence. Recall of wars in general (operationalized by WWI recall) was also unrelated to willingness to fight. Results replicate and extend Archer and Gartner's classic study showing the legitimization of violence by war to the domain of collective remembering. Keywords: social representations; collective memory; war attitudes

Despite the importance of the concept of cultural display rules in explaining cultural differences in emotional expression and despite the fact that it has been more than 30 years since this concept was coined, there is yet to be a study that surveys display rules across a wide range of cultures. This article reports such a study. More than 5,000 respondents in 32 countries completed the Display Rule Assessment Inventory. The authors examined five hypotheses concerning the relationship between display rules and individualism-collectivism (IC). The findings indicated the existence of several universal effects, including greater expression toward in-groups versus out-groups, and an overall regulation effect. Individualistic and collectivistic cultures differed on overall expressivity endorsement and in norms concerning specific emotions in in-group and out-group situations. Keywords: display rules; emotion; expression; individualism-collectivism; cultural norms

Ciências Sociais::Ciências da Comunicação ,Ciências da Comunicação [Ciências Sociais] - Abstract
[Excerpt] Executive summary: The project’s main objective is to enrich the intercultural understanding, and to promote knowledge as well as analysing plural narratives and social representations of about the past and present in Mozambique and Portugal. Collection of these narratives includes recovery of historical materials, (re)interpretation of the colonial past and identity representations within the fields of cinema, school textbooks, museums and exhibitions and listening to the voices of secondary school students. The project also aims to promote scientific literature in the Portuguese language, highlighting works developed by Portuguese-speaking scientists. During the past year, priority was given to the collection and analysis of material in various regions of Mozambique and in Portugal. Bibliographic, filmographic, exhibition catalogues and history textbooks have been reviewed in both countries. This task was particularly challenging in Mozambique due to the absence of archives and the need to establish direct contact with the people involved in the preparation of school textbooks and educational policies, as well as the major geographical dispersion. The recovery of heritage items is a key element in the recovery of history, memory and the identities and representations of the “self” and the “other”. The material has been used to develop two databases – for films and school textbooks respectively - which will be published on a free access basis in the University of Minho’s Data Repository1, constituting an important instrument for scientific dissemination. The studies have resulted in nine articles published in journals, five book chapters, two books and a thematic edition of the journal, Vista. In addition, six book chapters and one issue of the Revista Lusófona de Estudos Culturais (Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies) are in press. Since the start of the project, 34 articles and seven book chapters have been published. This already exceeds the initially planned outputs, in terms of publications. It is noteworthy that14 articles have been published in journals indexed in Scopus and another five articles in journals indexed in ERIH PLUS (European Reference Index for the Humanities and Social Sciences). In this paper we examine the representations of the colonial past and the master narratives about the liberation struggles conveyed by current Mozambican history textbooks. Mozambique is a multicultural and multilingual country, which inherited a particularly difficult situation from the colonial past. After gaining independence in 1975, one of the priorities was colonial past. After gaining independence in 1975, one of the priorities was to re-write history in order to overcome the “capitalist colonial mentality”, and foster “patriotism”, “socialism” and achieve “national cohesion”. However, soon after independence, the country lived through a 16-year “civil war” which ended only after the collapse of the USSR and the dismantling of the apartheid regimes in neighbouring countries. Our research corpus material comprised all five current history textbooks for secondary education (grades 8 - 12). We conducted an exploratory narrative content analysis of the corpus, connecting psychological contents (namely, social categorization, social comparison, and attribution processes) to linguistic-structural features of narratives. Textbooks explain how European imperialism was characterized by capitalism, the exploitation of natural and human resources, the slave trade, the partition of Africa among European empires, and the racist colonial rule, excluding native peoples from citizenship. The processes of social comparison assume a particular relevance, aiming to highlight a common struggle against colonialism and capitalism by African and Asian peoples. Overall, textbooks tend to configure a simplified master narrative that operates on the basis of binary oppositions that were conveyed by the ruling elite propaganda, legitimizing the present-day political situation. Throughout the text, the binary “us” versus “them”, “workers” versus “capitalists”, is mainly expressed in terms of European/exploiter versus African/exploited and goes in tandem with an almost unspoken racial binary system (Black versus White), achieved mainly through pictures. The analysis undertaken in the current Mozambican history textbooks evidences that the memory of the liberation struggle from colonialism is at the heart of the national building process. However, this nation-building narrative goes in tandem with “old” binary systems forged during European colonialism.
