Background Anogenital warts ( AGW) are one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease worldwide. Approximately, 90% of AGWs are related to infection by HPV 6 and 11. However, AGW have been associated with infection by multiple genotypes, including HR- HPV, which may be associated with a long-term increased risk of anogenital cancer. Objective This observational prospective epidemiological study aims to estimate the type-specific HPV distribution on incident AGWs in both genders, and additionally to assess the frequency of anal and oral HPV infection in patients with AGWs. Methods According to defined inclusion criteria, individuals with incident clinical diagnosis of AGWs were recruited in seven Portuguese Centres. HPV genotyping was performed using CLART HPV2 test. Results Between November 2012 and March 2014, 162 women and 400 men (mean age: 34 years), were enrolled. After exclusion of patients with unqualified AGW samples, HPV was detected in 95.3% (505/530) AGW patients, 96.8% males and 91.6% females. Among men who have sex with men, HPV was detected in 98.5% patients. HPV 6 and/or HPV 11 were the most frequent genotypes (87.5%), and HPV 16 the most common HR- HPV (9.2%). Infection with HPV 6/11 and any HR- HPV was observed in 35.8% patients. HPV prevalence on the anal canal and oral mucosa was 83.1% and 15.0%, respectively. Conclusion Incident AGWs were more frequent in males than in females. LR- HPVs were more common among males and HR- HPVs among females. HPV 6 and 11 were the most common genotypes on both genders. However, there was also a high prevalence of HR- HPVs, particularly of HPV 16. AGWs represent a clinical marker of both anal and oral HPV infections, including anal HR- HPV infections in women and men who have sex with men. In 1990, three groups simultaneously reported that putative IgG antibodies to anionic phospholipids were either not directed to phospholipids or at least required β2-glycoprotein-I (β, 2-GP-I) for reactivity in vitro. During the same year, our group described a patient with ‘idiopathic’ hemolytic anemia with serum and erythrocyte-bound IgM antibodies to phosphatidylcholine later found to be independent of β2-GP-I for antigen recognition. Lately, the field has been expanded considerably with: (1) the description of other potential antigens such as prothrombin for some lupus anticoagulants, (2) the finding of crossreactivity between some antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) with thrombomodulin, (3) the presence of serum antibodies to β2-GP-I (anti-β2-GP-I) in patients with SLE and thromboses, (4) the findings that the clinical manifestations of APS in SLE patients associate more strongly with anti-β2-GP-I than with aPL, (5) our finding of a group of SLE patients with the clinical manifestations of APS, with negative serum aPL, but with positive anti-β2-GP-I, (6) the description of a group of patients with the clinical manifestations of APS, without serum aPL, without serological nor clinical evidence of any autoimmune disease, but with IgG anti-β2-GP-I, and (7) the observation that serum anti-phosphatidylethanolamine antibodies detected in some patients with APS require kininogen (alone or complexed with the kininogen-binding protein), prekallikrein and/or factor XI for in vitro reactivity. Thus, there are antibodies that may be considered true aPL; other ‘aPL’ require a protein cof actor for their detection in vitro, at least in the case of β2-GP-I it would appear that their epitope is present on the protein proper not on the phospholipid, hence these are pseudo aPL, and a third group of related anti-cof actor autoantibodies that are directed to the protein in the absence of phospholipid. Objective: To evaluate the system for Health Surveillance of Populations Exposed to Chemical Substances (Vigipeq) in Brazil from 2011 to 2021., Methods: Qualitative attributes (simplicity; acceptability, or engagement of individuals and institutions in surveillance; flexibility; and utility, or achievement of system objectives) were assessed using a semi-structured and anonymous questionnaire completed by representatives of environmental health surveillance agencies in capital cities. Quantitative attributes, including sensitivity (case detection), representativeness (generation of accurate information about events in terms of time, place, and person), and positive predictive value (PPV, true events of contaminated areas and exposed populations), were derived from the Health Surveillance Information System for Populations Exposed to Contaminated Soil. Data on exogenous intoxications were sourced from the Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Information System., Results: Between 2011 and 2021, 16 029 cases of exogenous intoxication and 17 753 contaminated or potentially contaminated areas were recorded in Brazil. According to the questionnaire responses, Vigipeq was considered complex, inflexible, and had low acceptability. However, its sensitivity to detect exposures was high. The PPVs for identifying contaminated areas as well as exposed and potentially exposed populations were low. The system demonstrated utility in achieving its objectives., Conclusions: Vigipeq is a useful tool but requires improvements in its operational aspects and in the application of the data it generates. The City of Montreal has committed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. To meet this commitment, the city has adopted the Climate Plan 2020-2030, which includes the treatment of landfill gas (LFG). Within this framework, this research aimed to investigate the efficiency of a biofilter designed to treat high volumes of low-concentration LFG collected from lateral trenches at the Complexe Environnemental de Saint-Michel (CESM) in Montreal. The methane oxidation layer (MOL) of this biofilter, employed a material composed of 50% compost and 50% wood chips. Over a 54-week monitoring period, the system effectively maintained temperature conditions favorable to bacterial activity and methane oxidation. To assess the accuracy of predicting the hydraulic behavior of a methane oxidation biosystem (MOB) using numerical modeling, the biofilter was designed and constructed with specific features. In particular, the pore voids at the interface between the MOL and the gas distribution layer (GDL) were intentionally blocked along the downstream quarter of the biofilter length. This design ensures that water reaches the occlusion point due to the capillary barrier effect. Moisture content values remained within the expected range for most of the monitoring phase but increased with time. Despite this issue, the biofilter achieved an average efficiency higher than 95%. Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of non-criteria clinical features in patients with primary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), and to assess their relationship to thrombosis and damage., Methods: We retrospectively included 177 primary APS patients, and/or patients who only achieved the serological Sydney criteria but had thrombocytopenia and/or haemolytic anaemia. We registered demographics, serology, treatment, thrombotic/obstetric manifestations and non-criteria clinical manifestations (cutaneous, haematologic, renal, heart valve disease, and neurological). We scored the DIAPS and a modified SLICC index. We used logistic regression and reported OR with 95% CI., Results: 78% were women with a median follow-up of 6.7 years. Thrombosis was found in 74% of patients, 29.3% had obstetric features, and 64% had non-criteria clinical manifestations. The frequency of the non-criteria clinical manifestation was: haematologic 40.1%, cutaneous 20.9%, neurologic 18%, cardiac 5% and renal 4.5%. Non-criteria features were associated with LA (OR 2.3, 95% 1.03-5.1) and prednisone use (OR 8.2, 95% CI 1.7-39.3). A DIAPS score ≥1 was associated with thrombosis (OR 53.1, 95% CI 17.8-15.2), prednisone use (OR 0.27, CI 95% 0.09-0.83) and neurological involvement (OR 6.4, 95% CI 1.05-39.8); whereas a modified SLICC ≥ 1 with thrombosis (OR 10.2; IC 95% 4.43-26.1), neurological involvement (OR 6.4, 95%CI 1.05-39.8), obstetric features (OR 0.32 CI 95% 0.12-0,81) and cutaneous features (OR 5.3, CI 95% 1.4-19), especially livedo reticularis (OR 5.45; IC 95% 1.49-19.8)., Conclusions: Non-criteria clinical manifestations are common and associated with LA. Among them, neurologic involvement and the presence of livedo were associated with damage accrual.

Lysimetry has been acknowledged in the literature as the most effective means of assessing deep percolation rates through landfill final covers. Designing lysimeters requires several tools, including thorough laboratory testing and numerical modelling. This paper focuses on a fundamental boundary condition, namely breakthrough suction, and how it affects lysimeter design. This study was triggered by a multi-year database of suction and seepage data collected from a large-scale lysimeter constructed at the St-Nicephore landfill, Quebec, Canada. Tensiometers were installed at several levels near and at the interface between the cover material and the drainage layer inside the lysimeter, and outflow was measured using tipping counters. Based on field results and an analysis thereof, different geometry scenarios were simulated with HYDRUS-2D, and it was observed that in lysimeters designed using the linear method, breakthrough suction at the lower boundary can result in a greater than 90% percolation performance. With climate change, lysimeter percolation rate estimates may also be affected by rainfall events of varying magnitudes. Lastly, we were able to assess the existing design procedures and suggest a simple and conservative approach.

Aluminium (Al)-rich palaeosols-i.e., palaeobauxite deposits-should have formed in karst depressions in carbonate sequences as a result of acidic solutions from oxidative weathering of sulfide minerals during the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), but no GOE-related karst-palaeobauxite deposits have so far been recorded. Here, we report results of in situ uranium-lead (U-Pb) dating of detrital zircon and spatially associated rutile from a metamorphosed Al-rich rock within a dolomite sequence in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) of Minas Gerais, Brazil, known as the Gandarela Formation. Rutile grains are highly enriched in thorium (Th = 3-46 ppm; Th/U ratio = 0.3-3.7) and yielded an isochron, lower-intercept age of ca. 2.12 Ga, which coincides with the final phase of the GOE-i.e., the Lomagundi event. The rutile age represents either authigenic growth of TiO 2 enriched in Th, U and Pb during bauxite formation, or subsequent rutile crystallisation during metamorphic overprint. Both cases require an authigenic origin for the rutile. Its high Th contents can be used as a palaeoenvironmental indicator for decreased soil pH during the GOE. Our results also have implications for iron (Fe)-ore genesis in the QF. Emissions from Canadian landfills account for 20 % of national greenhouse gas emissions, a portion of which occur as fugitive emissions. Depending on management factors, significant quantities of landfill gas are emitted during the operational phase and over several decades following landfill closure. Successful landfill reclamation developments depend on low-maintenance solutions to manage fugitive emissions. Designing passive methane oxidation biosystems (PMOBs) to complement landfill covers has become a promising complementary strategy. Achieving year-round methane oxidation in cold climates, requires specific conditions for survival of methanotrophic bacteria (responsible for methane oxidation), including optimal temperature, moisture and sufficient supply of O 2 and CH 4 . The objective of this study was to design, construct and monitor a fully instrumented pilot-scale PMOB capable of abating fugitive methane emissions from a closed landfill in the city of Kitchener, Ontario, now a public park. Factors considered in the design include type of PMOB media, methane loading rates, hydraulic behaviour and ambient temperature. Methane oxidation efficiencies between 73 and 100 % were achieved during the monitoring period. The goal was to develop a long-term solution to mitigate fugitive methane emissions at this closed landfill. Successful mitigation will provide a low-maintenance, high impact technology that could be adopted by the municipality for abatement of CH 4 emissions at other landfills under its management. The results will also be useful to landfill designers, operators, and regulatory bodies. Overall, the PMOB construction and monitoring results supported evidence that the designed PMOB was capable of abating most of the CH 4 loading. Lysimeters are considered the most appropriate instrument for assessing percolations rates through landfill final covers. Their design, however, must take into consideration the unsaturated nature of water seepage, otherwise they may act as a sink or cause flow avoidance. The aim of this study was to investigate whether using a simple approach to lysimeter design produces reliable seepage control data. Two different design methods were compared using a three-year field database of suction and seepage data collected from large-scale lysimeters installed at the St-Nicephore landfill in Canada. The first, or control, whose side walls were as high as the thickness of the cover material, was inspired from lysimeters installed during the Alternative Cover Assessment Program (ACAP; USA). The second lysimeter was designed based on the proposed simple design methodology, which focuses on the unsaturated flow and hydraulic properties of the materials to determine the optimal wall height. Analysis of the database did not show any indication of significant preferential flow, or alteration of the flow regime by the second lysimeter, which collected as much percolation as the control one (less than 5% difference). The linear method has not been tested for extreme climatic conditions and the wall heights calculated using this method may be very high when designed for very fine-grained soil covers.

This infection has been associated with cardiac injury, cardiovascular complications and higher mortality., Objectives: The main objective of the CARDIO COVID 19-20 Registry is to determine the presence of cardiovascular comorbidities and cardiovascular complications in COVID-19 infected patients that required in-hospital treatment in different Latin American institutions., Methods: The CARDIO COVID 19-20 Registry is an observational, multicenter, ambispective, and hospital-based registry of patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection who required in-hospital treatment in Latin America. The layered mineral tilkerodeite (Pd 2 HgSe 3 ), the palladium analogue of jacutingaite (Pt 2 HgSe 3 ), is a promising quantum spin hall insulator for low-power nanospintronics. In this context, a fast and reliable assessment of its structure is key for exploring fundamental properties and architecture of new Pd 2 HgSe 3 -based devices. Here, we investigate the first-order Raman spectrum in high-quality, single-crystal bulk tilkerodeite, and analyze the wavenumber relation to its isostructural jacutingaite analogue. By using polarized Raman spectroscopy, symmetry analysis, and first-principles calculations, we assigned all the Raman-active phonons in tilkerodeite, unveiling their wavenumbers, atomic displacement patterns, and symmetries. Our calculations used several exchange-correlation functionals within the density functional perturbation theory framework, reproducing both structure and Raman-active phonon wavenumbers in excellent agreement with experiments. Also, it was found that the influence of the spin-orbit coupling can be neglected in the study of these properties. Finally, we compared the wavenumber and atomic displacement patterns of corresponding Raman-active modes in tilkerodeite and jacutingaite, and found that the effect of the Pd and Pt masses can be neglected on reasoning their wavenumber differences. From this analysis, tilkerodeite is found to be mechanically weaker than jacutingaite against the atomic displacement patterns of these modes. Our findings advance the understanding of the structural properties of a recently discovered layered topological insulator, fundamental to further exploring its electronic, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties, and for device fabrication.

This study was conducted to evaluate the fatty acid profile, sensory properties and lipid oxidation of meat on retail display (RD) from Nellore steers (n = 96) fed diets containing soybean (SOY), sunflower (SUN), or linseed (LIN) oil or a control diet (CON). After slaughtering, samples of the Longissimus muscle were collected for sensory properties (1 day), fatty acid composition (1 day) and oxidation stability (3 days under RDC) evaluations. No differences in total lipids, cholesterol, TBARS, and total SFAs, MUFAs, PUFAs, and PUFA/SFA were observed. However, meat from animals fed vegetable oil had more CLA than that of the CON samples. The flavour, juiciness and overall acceptability were affected by the treatments (P < 0.05), but no consistent effect of a specific oil source was observed. Meat colour was not affected by diets or days under RD, and 7-ketocholesterol was not detected in any sample. Molybdenum (Mo) and its isotopes have been used to retrieve palaeoenvironmental information on the ocean-atmosphere system through geological time. Their application has so far been restricted to rocks least affected by severe metamorphism and deformation, which may erase or alter palaeoenvironmental signals. Environmental Mo-isotope signatures can be retrieved if the more manganese (Mn)-enriched rocks are isotopically depleted and the maximum range of δ 98 Mo values is close to the ~2.7‰ Mo-isotope fractionation known from Mo sorption onto Mn oxides at low temperature. Here, we show that the Morro da Mina Mn-ore deposit in Minas Gerais, Brazil, contains Mn-silicate-carbonate ore and associated graphitic schist that likely preserve δ 98 Mo of Palaeoproterozoic seawater, despite a metamorphic overprint of at least 600 °C. The extent of Mo-isotope fractionation between the Mn-silicate-carbonate ore and the graphitic schist is similar to modern Mn-oxide precipitates and seawater. Differences in δ 98 Mo signals are broadly reflected in cerium (Ce) anomalies, which suggest an oxic-anoxic-stratified Palaeoproterozoic ocean.

Objective: The clinical significance of anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin (aPS/PT) in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is still controversial. We assessed the prevalence of aPS/PT antibodies, their association with other anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL) and with different APS clinical phenotypes., Methods: We included 95 primary APS patients according to the Sydney classification criteria, and patients with thrombocytopenia and/or hemolytic anemia who also fulfilled the serological APS criteria. We tested aCL, anti-β2GP-I and aPS/PT antibodies (both IgG and IgM isotypes) and lupus anticoagulant (LA). We used χ2 test, Spearman's correlation coefficient, Mann-Whitney U test and logistic regression., Results: Seventy-seven percent of patients had thrombosis, 50% hematologic involvement and 25% obstetric events (non-exclusive groups). Twenty patients had only hematologic features. The prevalence of IgG and IgM aPS/PT antibodies was 61% and 60%, respectively. Patients with LA+ had a higher prevalence and higher titers of IgG and IgM aPS/PT antibodies. aPS/PT antibodies correlated with aPL antibodies including LA. IgG aPS/PT antibodies were associated with thrombosis (OR 8.6 [95% CI 2.13-33.8, p = 0.002]) and pure hematologic features (OR 0.2, CI 95% 0.05-0.97, p = 0.004). IgM anti-β2GP-I antibodies conferred high risk for both hematologic (OR 7.9, 95% CI 1.88-34.61, p = 0.006) and thrombotic involvement (OR 7.4, 95% CI 1.76-31.12, p = 0.006)., Conclusions: aPS/PT antibodies were highly prevalent and correlated with other aPL antibodies. IgG aPTS/PT conferred a high risk for thrombosis, but not for pure hematologic involvement. aPS/PT antibodies may be a useful serological tool in the diagnosis and phenotypic characterization of APS patients., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The performance of biofiltration to mitigate CH 4 emissions from cow barns was investigated in the laboratory using two flow-through columns constructed with an acclimatized packed bed media composed of inexpensive materials and readily available in an agricultural context. The biofilters were fed with artificial exhaust gas at a constant rate of 0.036 m 3  h -1 and low inlet CH 4 concentration (0.22 g m -3  = 300 ppm). The empty-bed residence time (EBRT) was equal to 0.21 h. Additionally, in order to simulate temperature changes under natural conditions and determine the influence of such cycles on CH 4 removal efficiency, the upper part of the biofilters were submitted to temperature oscillations over time. The maximum oxidation rate (1.68 μg CH4 g dw -1 h -1 ) was obtained with the commercial compost mixed with straw. Accordingly, it was considered as packing bed media for the biofilters. The CH 4 removal efficiency was affected by the temperature prevailing within the biofilters, by the way in which the cooling-warming cycles were applied and by the acclimatization process. The shorter the cooling-warming cycles, the more oxidation rates varied. With longer cycles, CH 4 removal rates stabilized and CH 4 removal efficiencies attained nearly 100% in both biofilters, and remained at this level for more than 100 days, irrespective of the temperature at the top of the biofilter, which was - at times - adverse for microbiological activity. The first order rate constant for CH 4 oxidation kinetics of the entire system was estimated at 15 h -1 . If such rate could be transposed to real field conditions in Canada, home to nearly 945,000 dairy cows, biofiltration may be applied to efficiently abate between 2 × 10 6 and 3 × 10 6  t yr -1 of CO 2 equivalent (depending on how estimates are performed) from bovine enteric fermentation alone., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. An examination of the processes contributing to the production of landfill greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is required, as the actual level to which waste degrades anaerobically and aerobically beneath covers has not been differentiated. This paper presents a methodology to distinguish between the rate of anaerobic digestion (r AD ), composting (r COM ) and CH 4 oxidation (r OX ) in a landfill environment, by means of a system of mass balances developed for molecular species (CH 4 , CO 2 ) and stable carbon isotopes (δ 13 C-CO 2 and δ 13 C-CH 4 ). The technique was applied at two sampling locations on a sloped area of landfill. Four sampling rounds were performed over an 18 month period after a 1.0 m layer of fresh waste and 30-50 cm of silty clay loam had been placed over the area. Static chambers were used to measure the flux of the molecular and isotope species at the surface and soil gas probes were used to collect gas samples at depths of approximately 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m. Mass balances were based on the surface flux and the concentration of the molecular and isotopic species at the deepest sampling depth. The sensitivity of calculated rates was considered by randomly varying stoichiometric and isotopic parameters by ±5% to generate at least 500 calculations of r OX , r AD and r COM for each location in each sampling round. The resulting average value of r AD and r COM indicated anaerobic digestion and composting were equally dominant at both locations. Average values of r COM : ranged from 9.8 to 44.5 g CO 2 m -2  d -1 over the four sampling rounds, declining monotonically at one site and rising then falling at the other. Average values of r AD: ranged from 10.6 to 45.3 g CO 2 m -2  d -1 . Although the highest average r AD value occurred in the initial sampling round, all subsequent r AD values fell between 10 and 20 g CO 2 m -2  d -1 . r OX had the smallest activity contribution at both sites, with averages ranging from 1.6 to 8.6 g CO 2 m -2  d -1 . We hypothesized that abomasal infusion of glucose would promote de novo fatty acid biosynthesis from glucose in vitro in bovine intramuscular (i.m.) and subcutaneous (s.c.) adipose tissues to a greater extent than ruminal infusion of acetate, propionate, or glucose. Angus crossbred steers (n = 24), 22 mo of age, were fitted with ruminal cannulas, and steers were adapted to another corn/sorghum finishing diet over a 2-wk period while recovering from the placement of the cannulas. After the adaptation period, the steers were fed the second finishing diet at 130% of their voluntary intake and were infused with isocaloric amounts (3.76 Mcal/d) of glucose, propionate, or acetate for 35 d. Glucose was infused either into the rumen or into the abomasum, whereas propionate and acetate were infused into the rumen. Acetate infusion decreased DM and DE intakes (P < 0.05). The 5th to 8th longissimus muscle section was removed immediately and transported to the laboratory within 10 min post-exsanguination in 38 °C, oxygenated Krebs Henseleit buffer containing 5 mM glucose and 5 mM acetate. Intramuscular and s.c. adipose tissues were dissected from the muscle and incubated in vitro in 5 mM glucose plus 5 mM acetate (containing [U-14C]glucose or [1-14C]acetate). Lipid content was lower (P = 0.04) in i.m. adipose tissue of the acetate-infused steers than in the other treatment groups, and i.m. adipocytes from acetate-infused steers were smaller (P = 0.01) than those from propionate-infused steers. The rate of incorporation of acetate into glyceride-fatty acids (GFA) in i.m. and s.c. adipose tissues was greater (P < 0.03) in steers receiving ruminal or abomasal infusions of glucose than in adipose tissues from steers infused with acetate. The greatest rates of GFA synthesis were observed in s.c. adipose tissue from steers infused ruminally with propionate or abomasally infused with glucose (P < 0.001). In i.m. and s.c. adipose tissues, the proportion of acetyl units from acetate incorporated into GFA was greater in steers receiving glucose infusion in the rumen or abomasum than in steers receiving acetate or propionate infusion (P < 0.05). Contrary to our hypothesis, abomasal glucose infusion did not promote greater fatty acid biosynthesis from glucose in i.m. adipose tissue than ruminal glucose infusion. However, glucose infusion caused the greatest production of acetyl units from acetate in i.m. and s.c. adipose tissues.

The design process of passive methane oxidation biosystems needs to include design criteria that account for the effect of unsaturated hydraulic behavior on landfill gas migration, in particular, restrictions to landfill gas flow due to the capillary barrier effect, which can greatly affect methane oxidation rates. This paper reports the results of numerical simulations performed to assess the landfill gas flow behavior of several passive methane oxidation biosystems. The concepts of these biosystems were inspired by selected configurations found in the technical literature. We adopted the length of unrestricted gas migration (LUGM) as the main design criterion in this assessment. LUGM is defined as the length along the interface between the methane oxidation and gas distribution layers, where the pores of the methane oxidation layer material can be considered blocked for all practical purposes. High values of LUGM indicate that landfill gas can flow easily across this interface. Low values of LUGM indicate greater chances of having preferential upward flow and, consequently, finding hotspots on the surface. Deficient designs may result in the occurrence of hotspots. One of the designs evaluated included an alternative to a concept recently proposed where the interface between the methane oxidation and gas distribution layers was jagged (in the form of a see-saw). The idea behind this ingenious concept is to prevent blockage of air-filled pores in the upper areas of the jagged segments. The results of the simulations revealed the extent of the capability of the different scenarios to provide unrestricted and conveniently distributed upward landfill gas flow. The objective was to describe the management and risk factors for complications of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) patients who underwent a surgical procedure in a single center. We reviewed medical records of all patients with primary or secondary APS who underwent an elective surgery during a 6-year period. Demographical data, management of anticoagulation and complications were recorded. We identified 43 patients, mean age 37.9 ± 8.9 years, who underwent a total of 48 elective surgeries. All patients had history of at least one thrombotic event and were under vitamin K antagonists. Before surgery, all patients received bridging therapy with intravenous infusion of heparin or low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). Among the LMWH group, 36 had a full anticoagulation regimen and nine prophylactic doses. In 62% of the surgeries, we identified an optimal management of periprocedural anticoagulation according to guidelines. Overall six patients had severe bleeding and three thrombotic complications (full anticoagulation regimen n = 2 and prophylactic dose group n = 1). Patients with optimal management of anticoagulation experienced less thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications (7 vs. 33%; OR 0.14, 95% CI 0.02-0.81; p = 0.040) and patients with INR ≤1.5 at surgery had fewer episodes of major bleeding (6 vs. 29%; OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.02-0.98; p = 0.050). All three thrombotic events occurred in patients with INR ≤1.5. Proper management of anticoagulation based on guidelines is associated with less complications in patients with APS. Notwithstanding the proper use of bridging therapy, some patients may develop thrombotic complications.

Aim: To evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS) and correlate it with a crude estimate of accrual organ damage, comorbidity (diabetes mellitus, hypertension and dyslipidemia) and treatment (oral anticoagulation, immunosuppressors and prednisone)., Methods: We assessed HRQoL with the Short-Form 36 (SF-36) and the Lupus Quality of Life instrument (LupusQoL) and the disease burden with a modified Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index (SLICC/ACR SDI). As controls we used SF-36 data from a Mexican general population within the same age range., Results: We included 50 PAPS patients (86% women), mean age 47.6 ± 14.5 years, median disease duration 9.4 years, median SLICC/ACR score of 1 point and 80% had thrombotic events. PAPS patients had lower HRQoL than controls. We found a positive correlation between SF-36 and LupusQoL (r = 0.85, P < 0.0001). The SLICC/ACR SDI correlated negatively with both LupusQoL and SF-36, specifically the peripheral vascular domain (r = -0.29, P = 0.03, for both). Patients on oral anticoagulants (n = 37) had lower LupusQoL, physical functioning, intimate relationships, burden to others and pain scores as well as a lower SF-36 physical functioning score. LandGEM's equation was reformulated to include two types of refuse, fast decaying refuse (FDR) and slow decaying refuse (SDR), whose fractions and key modeling parameters k and L 0 were optimized independently for three periods in the life of the Montreal-CESM landfill. Three scenarios were analyzed and compared to actual biogas collection data: (1) Two-Variable Scenario, where k and L 0 were optimized for a single type of refuse; (2) Six-Variable Scenario, where three sets of k and L 0 were optimized for the three periods and for a single type of refuse; and (3) Seven-Variable Scenario, whereby optimization was performed for two sets of k and L 0 , one associated with FDR and the second with SDR, and for the fraction of FDR during each of the three periods. Results showed that the lowest error from the error minimization technique was obtained with the Six-Variable Scenario. However, this scenario's estimation of gas generation was found to be rather unlikely. The Seven-Variable Scenario, which allowed for considerations about changes in landfilling trends, offered a more reliable prediction tool for landfill gas generation and optimal shutdown time of the biogas collection system, when the minimum technological threshold would be attained. The efficiency of methane oxidation in passive methane oxidation biosystems (PMOBs) is influenced by, among other things, the intensity and distribution of the CH 4 loading at the base of the methane oxidation layer (MOL). Both the intensity and distribution are affected by the capillary barrier that results from the superposition of the two materials constituting the PMOB, namely the MOL and the gas distribution layer (GDL). The effect of capillary barriers on the unsaturated flow of water has been well documented in the literature. However, its effect on gas flow through PMOBs is still poorly documented. In this study, sets of numerical simulations were performed to evaluate the effect of unsaturated hydraulic characteristics of the MOL material on the value and distribution of moisture and hence, the ease and uniformity in the distribution of the upward flow of biogas along the GDL-MOL interface. The unsaturated hydraulic parameters of the materials used to construct the experimental field plot at the St-Nicephore landfill (Quebec, Canada) were adopted to build the reference simulation of the parametric study. The behavior of the upward flow of biogas for this particular material was analyzed based on its gas intrinsic permeability function, which was obtained in the laboratory. The parameters that most influenced the distribution and the ease of biogas flow at the base of the MOL were the saturated hydraulic conductivity and pore size distribution of the MOL material, whose effects were intensified as the slope of the interface increased. The effect of initial dry density was also assessed herein. Selection of the MOL material must be made bearing in mind that these three parameters are key in the effort to prevent unwanted restriction in the upward flow of biogas, which may result in the redirection of biogas towards the top of the slope, leading to high CH 4 fluxes (hotspots). In a well-designed PMOB, upward flow of biogas across the GDL-MOL interface is unrestricted and moisture distribution is uniform. Homozygote genotype V 247 of the β 2 -glycoprotein-I (β 2 GP-I) gene has been associated with anti-β 2 GP-I and thrombosis in patients with primary anti-phospholipid syndrome APS (PAPS). However, the cellular immune response to β 2 GP-I 247 has been little studied., Objective: To evaluate the immune cellular proliferation in response to native and non-native β 2 GP-I 247 valine/leucine phenotype from Mexican patients with PAPS., Methods: We studied 10 patients with PAPS and 10 healthy control subjects (HC). The polymorphism at position 247 of the β 2 GP-I gene was determined by PCR-RFLP and the corresponding β 2 GP-I protein was subsequently purified from normal human plasma by affinity chromatography. PBMC purified from patients and controls were stimulated with β 2 GP-I under native and in non native (reduced) conditions. We also determined the anti-β 2 GP-I production in vitro by B cell clones (EBV) generated in cocultures experiments. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was studied to determine the structural differences between the β 2 GP-I 247 valine/leucine isoforms. Cytokine profile (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, TNFα, INFγ) was evaluated in culture supernatants., Results: PAPS and healthy control PBMCs had a higher proliferative response when stimulated with β 2 GP-I under reduced cultures conditions compared to non-denatured conditions. PBMCs response from PAPS patients was higher. We observed more cell proliferation in response to β 2 GP-I 247 valine/leucine or valine isoforms in non-native conditions. In contrast, this response was not significant against β 2 GP-I 247 leucine. These findings were T CD4 + -dependent. Similar results were obtained with B cell clones derived from PAPS patients, which showed more pronounced proliferation in non native conditions and higher against β 2 GP-I 247 valine. No differences were found in anti-β 2 GP-I production, but high levels of IL-6 in vitro were identified. The structural analysis of both β 2 GP-I 247 isoforms by DSC showed a major conformational change due to a single mutation in the β 2 GP-I variants., Conclusions: PAPS PBMCs had a higher cellular response against β 2 GP-I 247 in non-native culture conditions preferentially to the β 2 GP-I 247 valine phenotype. Objectives: Patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) are at risk for subclinical endothelial injury, as well as accelerated atherosclerosis. In the related disease systemic lupus erythematosus, there is a well-established defect in circulating endothelial progenitors, which leads to an accrual of endothelial damage over time. This defect has been at least partially attributed to exaggerated expression of type I interferons (IFNs). We sought to determine whether these pathways are important in APS., Methods: We studied 68 patients with primary APS. Endothelial progenitors were assessed by flow cytometry and functional assay. Type I IFN activity was determined by a well-accepted bioassay, while peripheral blood mononuclear cells were scored for expression of IFN-responsive genes., Results: Endothelial progenitors from patients with APS demonstrated a marked defect in the ability to differentiate into endothelial cells, a phenotype which could be mimicked by treating control progenitors with APS sera. Elevated type I IFN activity was detected in the circulation of patients with APS (a finding that was then replicated in an independent cohort). While IgG depletion from APS sera did not rescue endothelial progenitor function, the dysfunction was successfully reversed by a type I IFN receptor-neutralising antibody., Conclusions: We describe, for the first time to our knowledge, an IFN signature in primary APS and show that this promotes impaired endothelial progenitor function. The rhizosphere is known as the most active biogeochemical layer of the soil. Therefore, it could be a beneficial environment for biotic methane oxidation. The aim of this study was to document - by means of batch incubation tests - the kinetics of CH4 oxidation in rhizosphere soils that were previously exposed to methane. Soils from three pre-exposure to CH4 zones were sampled: the never-before pre-exposed (NEX), the moderately pre-exposed (MEX) and the very pre-exposed (VEX). For each pre-exposure zone, the rhizosphere of several plant species was collected, pre-incubated, placed in glass vials and submitted to CH4 concentrations varying from 0.5% to 10%. The time to the beginning of CH4 consumption and the CH4 oxidation rate were recorded. The results showed that the fastest CH4 consumption occurred for the very pre-exposed rhizosphere. Specifically, a statistically significant difference in CH4 oxidation half-life was found between the rhizosphere of the VEX vegetated with a mixture of different plants and the NEX vegetated with ryegrass. This difference was attributed to the combined effect of the preconditioning level and plant species as well as to the organic matter content. Water is essential for the socio-economic development of a region and also for the survival of human beings. Water scarcity has direct and indirect impacts on the environment, the economy and human health. It can change the profile of morbidity and mortality of diseases, as well as having an impact on the supply of services that are essential public to the quality of life. This study aims to contextualize the occurrence of drought in Brazil, its effects on human health, as well as actions to be developed by the health sector to reduce the risk to those living in affected areas, with an emphasis on the monitoring of the quality of drinking water. This is a descriptive, qualitative study with a documental basis. The documents that were researched were related to initiatives by the Health Surveillance Secretariat of the Ministry of Health up until 2014. It is necessary to strengthen the performance capacity of the Unified Health System (SUS) in order to develop timely responses to reduce the risk to public health.

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between citrullinated proteins in synovial tissue with peripheral anti-citrullinated peptides autoantibodies (ACPA) and peptidylarginine deiminase (PADI) PADI2, PADI3, and PADI4 messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions in synovial tissue and fibroblast-like synoviocytes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Eleven RA and 12 osteoarthritis (OA) patients who underwent knee replacement surgery were studied. We detected citrullinated proteins in synovial tissue homogenates by western blot and serum ACPA by ELISA to anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibodies, and PADI2, PADI3, and PADI4 mRNA expressions in synovial tissue and in fibroblast-like synoviocytes. Patients with high amount of citrullinated proteins in synovial tissue (3 out of 7) have high levels of anti-CCP in serum. However, in the remaining 4 patients, the amount of synovial citrullinated proteins was minimal and their sera showed low levels of anti-CCP antibodies. Furthermore, we observed an increase in PADI2 mRNA expression in RA synovial tissue compared with OA patients (p = 0.02). We detected PADI3 mRNA in the synovial tissue of RA patients, but not in the tissue of OA patients. Even though fibroblast-type synoviocytes in RA are not the main source of PADs in the synovial tissue, they express PADI2 mRNA moderately, PADI4 mRNA weakly, while there is no detectable expression of PADI3 mRNA. In conclusion, we found a variety of citrullinated proteins in the synovial tissue of RA patients and the amount of such proteins is related to serum concentration of anti-CCP antibodies. We identified the presence of PADI3 mRNA expression in synovial tissue and PADI2 and PADI4 mRNA expressions in fibroblast-like synoviocytes from patients with RA.

This study aimed to compare the performance of an internal combustion engine fed with blends of biodiesel produced from soybean and diesel, and blends of biodiesel produced from beef tallow and diesel. Performance was evaluated in terms of power generated at low loading conditions (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 kW) and emission of organic and inorganic pollutants. In order to analyse inorganic gases (CO, SO2 and NOx), an automatic analyser was used and the organic emissions (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene - BTEX) were carried out using a gas chromatograph. The results indicate that the introduction of the two biodiesels in the fuel caused a reduction in CO, SO2 and BTEX emissions. In addition, the reduction was proportional to the increase in loading regime. Beef tallow biodiesels presented better results regarding emission than soybean biodiesels. The use of pure biodiesels also presented a net reduction in pollutant gas emissions without hindering the engine generator performance.

Objective: Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), especially those targeting β2 -glycoprotein I (β2 GPI), are well known to activate endothelial cells, monocytes, and platelets, with prothrombotic implications. In contrast, the interaction of aPL with neutrophils has not been extensively studied. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have recently been recognized as an important activator of the coagulation cascade, as well as an integral component of arterial and venous thrombi. This study was undertaken to determine whether aPL activate neutrophils to release NETs, thereby predisposing to the arterial and venous thrombosis inherent in the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)., Methods: Neutrophils, sera, and plasma were prepared from patients with primary APS (n = 52) or from healthy volunteers and characterized. No patient had concomitant systemic lupus erythematosus., Results: Sera and plasma from patients with primary APS had elevated levels of both cell-free DNA and NETs, as compared to healthy volunteers. Freshly isolated neutrophils from patients with APS were predisposed to high levels of spontaneous NET release. Further, APS patient sera, as well as IgG purified from APS patients, stimulated NET release from control neutrophils. Human aPL monoclonal antibodies, especially those targeting β2 GPI, also enhanced NET release. The induction of APS NETs was abrogated with inhibitors of reactive oxygen species formation and Toll-like receptor 4 signaling. Highlighting the potential clinical relevance of these findings, APS NETs promoted thrombin generation., Conclusion: Our findings indicate that NET release warrants further investigation as a novel therapeutic target in APS., (© 2015, American College of Rheumatology.)

Objectives: To assess the presence of acute thrombotic microangiopathy (aTMA) and chronic vascular lesions (cTMA) in lupus nephropathy, and to evaluate their association with extrarrenal lupus features, aPL positivity, antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and renal survival., Methods: We studied lupus patients with renal biopsy, ≥1 year of post-biopsy follow-up and at least two aCL (IgG-IgM), anti-β2GP-I (IgG-IgM) and/or lupus anticoagulant (LAC) determinations. A blinded nephropathologist evaluated all biopsies. We retrospectively collected clinical, serological, treatment and renal survival data. We plotted survival curves and used Cox regression analysis., Results: A total of 90 biopsies were included with a median disease duration 5.9 years and median follow-up 2.4 years. Eleven patients (12.2%) had cTMA and 3 (3%) aTMA. There was no difference in age, lupus duration, hypertension, drugs, APS, non-renal lupus features, low C3 or C4 aCL IgG, anti-β2GP1-IgG or IgM and LAC between cTMA and non-cTMA groups. The cTMA group had aCL-IgM less frequently (27% vs. 66%, p=0.02), more class IV nephropathy (100% vs. 40%, p=0.01), higher activity index scores (7.5 vs. 2, p=0.03) and a tendency to need chronic dialysis (54.5% vs. 24% p=0.06). At four years of follow-up, 28% of the cTMA group and 62% of the non-cTMA group were free of dialysis (log rank p=0.03). cTMA was associated with chronic dialysis (RR 2.9, CI 95% 1.1-8.1, p=0.03)., Conclusions: cTMA conferred a poor renal outcome. We found a low frequency of TMA that was not associated with with APL positivity or APS, suggesting that other factors hitherto not studied are involved in its pathogenesis.
