Abstract

Face masks represent an effective COVID-19 mitigation strategy; this study investigated the quality in use of FFP2 masks in a group of 156 frontline HCWs recruited through a snowball procedure in northwest Italy. Participants filled out an online questionnaire (January 2022) on FFP2 sources of discomfort, physical disturbance at different anatomical points and suggestions for improvement. Most of the participants (69%) reported a feeling of protection and safety, but they also reported episodes of dyspnea (70%). The majority of glasses wearers (62%) reported fogging and displacement of their glasses. Humidity and heat were the main discomfort sources (39%), followed by elastic bands (32%). Physical disturbances were frequent and heavier on the ears, nose and cheekbones. Nursing aides and nurses perceived significantly more discomfort compared to doctors and nursing aides had the highest rate of physical disturbance. To address these issues, following participants' suggestions, FFP2 masks should be redesigned to be more adjustable, with different sizes and softer fabrics. The investigation pointed out criticalities in the use of FFP2 masks related to different professional roles within the overall group of HCWs and stressed the need for an FFP2 human-centered design that accounts not only for physical needs but also for workload and task variability. Abstract

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of field experiments utilizing social norms, commitment and price-based interventions to promote energy conservation, load shifting, and energy efficiency behaviors. Treatment effects reported in the extant literature, as well as the factors that may strengthen or dampen these e ects are reviewed. We find that social norm and incentive-based interventions mostly achieve small reductions in energy consumption, and that the effects of commitment-based interventions are essentially zero for the most part. Incentive effects on energy efficiency investments are mostly non-existent, safe for a few exceptions. One gap that we identify is the almost complete absence of field experiments leveraging social norms or commitment to promote energy efficiency investments. We discuss a broad range of (mostly under-researched) plausible moderators of the interventions' effects. Crucially, a more careful attention to moderators in future research can highlight instances in which interventions can be e ective, notwithstanding their modest or non-existent average treatment effects. La pandemia Covid-19 ha comportato conseguenze e trasformazioni prefigurando scenari inediti sul piano economico, sociale e personale, determinando anche nel campo della ricerca l’urgenza di esplorarne le ricadute. Il volume dà quindi conto delle indagini svolte e in corso, sin dai primi giorni del lockdown, dai docenti e dai collaboratori del Dipartimento di Scienze della Formazione dell’Università Roma Tre, toccando i temi più diversi: dalla didattica a distanza, all’università e nei diversi ordini di scuola, al futuro dei servizi di orientamento, dal lavoro socio-educativo nelle varie tipologie di servizi all’impatto della pandemia sulle comunità, dalle narrazioni ai linguaggi artistici a contrasto di quest’emergenza non solo sanitaria. Si sono così esplorate le diverse educazioni possibili, riassegnando centralità ai processi formativi e al benessere delle persone, provando a tratteggiare nuovi paradigmi e prospettive., L’usabilità delle piattaforme E-learning ricopre un ruolo fondamentale nell’accrescere l’engagement dell’utente e la sua intenzione di utilizzo futuro del sistema tecnologico. Il presente studio ha inteso va¬lutare l’esperienza d’uso di piattaforme E-learning, intensificatosi a causa delle misure per il contenimento del COVID-19, in gruppi di studenti di due realtà universitarie romane (Roma Tre, n=24 e LUMSA, n=40). È stato somministrato un questionario relativo alla familiarità, usabilità percepita, gradevolezza dell’interfaccia, engagement percepito ed intenzione d’uso futuro delle piattaforme E-learning disponibili per le attività didattiche nei due atenei (II semestre 2019/2020): due piattaforme Moodle e due di video¬conferenza (Microsoft Teams e Google Meet). I risultati hanno mostrato una esperienza d’uso più agevole e soddisfacente con le piattaforme Moodle, rispetto a quelle per la videoconferenza (tra le quali Meet ha riportato punteggi superiori a Teams), con la piattaforma Moodle di Roma Tre percepita come particolarmente facile da utilizzare e coinvolgente, e più adatta per i lavori di gruppo. La ricerca ha permesso di evidenziare alcuni aspetti che potrebbero beneficiare di espesrienze di riprogettazione partecipata delle interfacce e/o di formazione mirata agli utenti su strategie di utilizzo diversificate, al fine di migliorare l’esperienza d’uso e sostenere l’engagement dell’utente.

Abstract

Aim of study: We tested the perceived quality in use of a prototype of a handling supporting device, developed through a user-centred design process intended for rear-mounted foldable rollover protective-structures (FROPSs).Area of study: The study was performed in the Province of Cuneo, which has the largest number of farms and the highest share of utilized agricultural area (UAA) in Piedmont Region, NW Italy.Material and methods: Three groups of users, novice-novice (NN), novice-expert (NE) and expert-expert (EE) were asked to raise two rear-mounted FROPSs: a traditional one and a second one equipped with a supporting device which consisted of a gas spring and a rod. A questionnaire has been used to record the perceived quality in use of both FROPSs (effort, physical discomfort, temporal demand and ease of use) and perceived usefulness and attitudes toward the adoption of the supporting device.Main results: All groups reported less physical effort, more stable postures, higher ease of use in handling the FROPS equipped with the supporting device; NN users, in particular, declared to be willing to adopt the supporting device in the future on their tractors when commercially available.Research highlights: Previous studies reported discomfort in operating the FROPS as the main cause of its improper use. A solution to improve FROPS reachability was developed and tested with users. Benefits were perceived by both novice users and expert users.

Abstract

Smart Farming Technologies (SFTs) have a real potential to deliver more productive and sustainable agricultural production. However, limited empirical research is available on the role played by objective and subjective factors in the adoption of such disruptive innovations, especially in the Italian context. This study investigated the role of education, farm size, being a sole farmer, and perceived barriers in affecting the use of SFTs in a sample of Italian farmers from the Piedmont region (North-West Italy). Three hundred and ten farming operators were questioned via a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. The analyses showed that low levels of education and working on-farm alone were positively associated with perceived economic barriers, which in turn were negatively associated with the adoption of SFTs. Farm size had a positive direct effect on SFT adoption. The results pointed out the need for targeted policies and training interventions to encourage the use of SFTs.

Abstract

Micro-Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the principal actors of the innovation process in the national business system of countries. Despite this, these enterprises face many economic, organizational and market barriers which may hinder the implementation of innovations. This issue is particularly relevant in Italy, where MSMEs represent 99% of the enterprises. The present study aimed to investigate the willingness to invest in innovations and related perceived barriers in a group of micro and small enterprises operating in the agricultural machinery manufacturing industry in northern Italy. Forty-two enterprises answered a questionnaire investigating: i) firm's characteristics, ii) interest in introducing innovation and willingness to invest in it, iii) perceived barriers and iv) respondent's socio-demographic information. Overall, economic issues, the lack of qualified personnel and difficulty in finding cooperation partners were cited as the foremost barriers. In detail, the firms with a higher level of management organization and more willing to invest in innovations were also those perceiving barriers the most. Our results showed that enterprises are actually trying to innovate but targeted measures and interventions should be adopted to support the firms in the innovation process.
