5. Swelling of star polymer thin films exposed to supercritical carbon dioxide.

Abstract

Impact of polymer chain architecture on the swelling of supported single‐layer polymer thin films with thicknesses below 80 nm in the presence of supercritical CO2 (scCO2) is investigated using in‐situ neutron reflectivity (NR) and ex‐situ x‐ray reflectivity (XR). 4‐arm star and 8‐arm star deuterated polystyrene (dPS) having similar total molecular weights are used. NR results revealed that the magnitude of the swelling for star polymers increases proportionally with decreasing dry film thicknesses similar to linear polymers. For film thicknesses above 5Rg, architectural differences have no impact on the swelling behavior. However, below 5Rg as the branching increases from linear to 4‐arm star and to 8‐arm star, swelling decreases due to the presence of a relatively thicker adsorbed layer formed by more branched architectures. Ex‐situ XR measurements verified that star architectures swell less than linear architecture and provided new information about the vitrification of the films through rapid quenching and its relation to the amount of CO2 retention. 12. Tectonic geomorphology of the Aras drainage basin (NW Iran): Implications for the recent activity of the Aras fault zone.

Abstract

Complex geology and tectonics of the NW Iran, the Caucasus region, and Eastern Turkey, are responsible for the present‐day landscapes of the region. The Aras drainage basin located in Iran, Azerbaijan and Armenia borders, provides an appropriate geographical environment for systematically studying the landforms produced or modified by active tectonic processes. Several morphometric indices were calculated for 114 sub‐basins to assess relative tectonic activity levels. Results were evaluated using two different methods; Index of Active Tectonics (IAT) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods. IAT results show that 2% of the sub‐basins belong to very high, 25% to high, 46% to moderate and 27% to low tectonic activity classes. AHP results, display that 12% of the sub‐basins belong to very high, 25% to high, 43% to moderate, and 20% to low tectonic activity classes. Results of both methods show approximate consistency and indicate that the tectonic activity along the Aras drainage basin is moderate to high and decreases from southwest to the northwest which is probably due to terminating fault branches in young unconsolidated deposits or strain partitioning processes. The major fault zones (e.g., Aras, Pambak–Sevan–Sunik, Akera, and Moghan fault zones) include areas with very high and high tectonic activity classes. Accordingly, the uplift rates have been estimated as >0.5 mm/yr for central and western parts, whereas the uplift rates are relatively less in the eastern part (<0.5 mm/yr). Abstract

The North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) starts to branch off in the western Bolu plain. The branches of the NAFZ in this location create the AlmacA +/- k block which is surrounded by the latest surface ruptures of significant earthquakes that occurred between 1944 and 1999, but its northeastern part remains unruptured. The most recently formed rupture, that was a result of the 1999 November 12 Duzce earthquake, ended to the northwest of the Bakacak Fault. The connection between the Bakacak Fault and the main branch of the NAFZ via the Bolu plain has until now remained unknown. This paper establishes that the route of the missing link runs through the Dagkent, Kasaplar and Burnuk faults, a finding achieved with the help of seismic reflection studies. The paper also argues that the cross cutting nature of these newly determined faults and a stress analysis based on focal mechanism solutions of recent earthquakes demonstrate the termination of the suggested pull-apart nature of the Bolu plain.

14. The Evolution Of Intraplate Fault Systems In Central Turkey: Structural Evidence And Ar-Ar And Rb-Sr Age Constraints For The Savcili Fault Zone

Abstract

The Savcili Fault Zone represents one of the most prominent regional-scale intraplate fault systems in central Turkey, recording the collisional events following the closure of Neo-Tethys in the eastern Mediterranean region. It consists of anastomosing reverse/thrust faults with WNW-ESE direction that placed rocks of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex on Paleogene sedimentary units. Structural measurements and kinematic indicators show that faults within the Savcili Fault Zone (SFZ) have top to the NE and NW sense of brittle deformation. Stable isotope (O-18 and D) and trace element data indicate that fault gouge illites precipitated from deep basinal brines. These fluids were mobilized during phases of compressional deformation and migrated upward along thrust faults toward shallow brittle deformation zones. Rb-Sr and Ar-Ar geochronology of fault gouges in two cataclastic zones demonstrates age variability for two different dating techniques (Rb-Sr: 40.91.5Ma and 22.91.3Ma; Ar-Ar: 46.450.25Ma and 29.8 +/- 0.13Ma). We argue that Rb-Sr dating provides ages more closely reflecting the timing of fault movements because of potential contamination of illite by excess Ar-40. Accordingly, the SFZ was active during at least two phases; the middle Eocene and late Oligocene to early Miocene, which is consistent with the relative age constraints suggested by field relationships. Geochronology combined with structural field evidence indicates a rapid change in stress regime from extension to contraction at similar to 40Ma that continued until at least similar to 23Ma. Direct dating of brittle faulting provides a prolific approach for determining the absolute timing of tectonic events in areas that have largely relied on indirect information.

18. Reactions of Some Pyrazole-3-Carboxylic Acids and Carboxylic Acid Chlorides with Various O- and N- Nucleophiles

Abstract

The 1H–pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid 2 and its remarkably stable acid chlorides 3 can easily be converted into the corresponding carbohydrazide, ester or amide derivatives 4, 6 and 7, respectively, from reaction with alcohols or Nnucleophiles. The acid chloride (3) was also converted easily into the new derivatives consisting of 5-phenyl-1H-pyrazole 8a,b. The cyclocondensation reactions of 2 with some hydrazines led to the formation of pyrazolo[3,4-d ]pyradizinone 5 derivative. The nitrile derivative 9 was obtained by dehydration of 7a,b in a mixture of SOCl2 and DMF. The thermal decomposition of 4-Benzoyl-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-5-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid 2b leads to the formation of [1-(4- nitrophenyl)-5-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-yl] phenylmethanone 10) It has been demonstrated that with the variation in reaction conditions, the reaction changes and leads to different products. The structures of these newly synthesized compounds were determined from the FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic data and elemental analyses.
