BackgroundGrip strength have been showed diverse associations with quality of life for the older adult population in the literature, still there is lack of evidence of the threshold value of grip strength for maintaining good quality of life in older adults. The purpose of this study was to study the dose-effect relationship between grip strength and quality of life in the older adult, and to explore the factors affecting quality of life in the older adult, so as to provide effective theoretical basis for realizing healthy aging.MethodsA total of 105 older adult people over 60 years old were selected from 3 communities in Beijing. Grip strength was measured by hand dynamometer apparatus and quality of life was assessed by 36-item Short-Form (SF-36). On the basis of controlling confounding factors, the dose-effect relationship between grip strength and quality of life was analyzed with the restricted cubic spline model.ResultsThe results showed that there was a dose-effect relationship between grip strength and physical component summary (PCS) (p 0.05). The threshold value of grip strength for male and female is 34.75 and 23.2 kg, for normal weight group and overweight and obesity group is 24.82 and 29.00 kg, for 60–69, 70–79, 80+ years group is 24.88, 23.37, and 22.97 kg, respectively. When the grip strength value is lower than the threshold value, the increase of grip strength was related to significant improvement of quality of life of the older adult, and when the grip strength value is higher than the threshold value, the quality of life can be maintained in good condition.ConclusionA dose-effect relationship was found between grip strength and physical health in quality of life. Results of our study indicated that the grip strength of the older adults needed to be greater than certain threshold values to maintain good quality of life.

BackgroundPrevious observational studies have shown a correlation between leisure sedentary behaviors (LSB) and physical activity (PA) with the incidence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, the causal associations remain unknown. Therefore, our study used bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to identify potential causal relationships between LSB/PA and OSA.MethodsWe sourced genetic variation data for LSB and PA from the UK Biobank, while data on OSA were collected from the FinnGen study. The primary analysis method employed was the inverse variance weighted (IVW) approach, complemented by the weighted median and MR-Egger methods. For sensitivity analyses, we conducted Cochran’s Q test, the MR-Egger intercept test, the MR-PRESSO global test, and the leave-one-out analysis.ResultsIVW analyses showed that genetically predicted leisure television watching (odds ratio [OR] = 1.38, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.09–1.75, p = 0.007) and computer use (OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.15–1.92, p = 0.002) significantly increased the risk of OSA. Conversely, self-reported vigorous physical activity (VPA) (OR = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.11–0.98, p = 0.046) may reduce the risk of OSA. No causal effects on OSA risk were observed for driving or self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Furthermore, the reverse MR analysis indicated no significant causal relationship between OSA and any LSB/PA phenotype. Sensitivity tests showed no significant heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy.ConclusionThis study suggests that leisurely television watching and computer use are risk factors for OSA, while VPA may be a protective factor. Additionally, OSA does not affect PA or LSB levels. We recommend reducing sedentary activities, particularly television watching and computer use, and prioritizing VPA to reduce the risk of OSA. Further research in diverse populations and settings is needed to validate these findings.

Objective: This study was conducted on 27 senior adults in a community in Beijing with the purpose of examining the possible correlation between cardiorespiratory function and cognitive function. Methods: A questionnaire was designed for the basic demographic characteristics. The electronic blood pressure meter and electronic lung capacity meter were used to test cardiorespiratory function. The items of the cardiorespiratory function were scored in standard percentage. The MoCA Scale was used for cognitive function measurement. Results: The average heart rate (beats per minute) was 78.9 with a standard deviation of 13.5, and the average vital capacity (ml) was 1386.3 with a standard deviation of 37.0. In 15 people, the measured blood pressure was above the hypertension standard. The average cognitive function score was 22.5 with a standard deviation of 4.3. Eighteen people (66.7%) had mild cognitive impairments. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that there was no statistically significant correlation between cardiorespiratory function and cognitive function in the elderly (P > 0.05). Conclusion: No correlation was found between cardiopulmonary function and cognitive function in the elderly participating in this study and further large-scale population research is needed in the future. In this study, the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment was higher than in other studies. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships between cardiorespiratory fitness and cognitive function in middle school students. Methods: An extensive literature search was performed for articles published from March 2011 to March 2021 in PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO and CNKI (a Chinese database). Studies were included if: (1) the investigated population was aged between 6 and 18 years, (2) they reported the following outcome indicators: VO2max or VO2peak, cognitive function and/or at least one of the following three dimensions: executive function, attention network, intelligence. Studies that did not meet the aforementioned inclusion criteria or that had a study population with pathological obesity or other related diseases were excluded. Forty-nine articles were included, and the information on the relationships between cardiorespiratory fitness and cognitive function was retrieved for the systematic review. Results: As for the relationships between cardiorespiratory fitness and executive function, consistent evidence showed that adolescents with good cardiorespiratory fitness had better executive function. It should be noted that, compared to other variables corresponding to physical fitness, cardiorespiratory fitness is the most important factor of the attention network. Cardiorespiratory fitness was also found to be a mediating variable for the relationships between birth weight and intelligence. Conclusion: In previous studies, cardiorespiratory fitness was found to be related to different dimensions of middle school students' cognitive function, including executive function, attention network and intelligence. Background: Studies have shown diverse strength of evidence for the associations between air pollutants and childhood asthma, but these associations have scarcely been documented in the early life. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impacts of various air pollutants on the development of asthma phenotypes in the first year of life. Methods: Adjusted odds ratios were estimated to assess the relationships between exposures to air pollutants and single and multi-dimensional asthma phenotypes in the first year of life in children of the EDEN mother-child cohort study (n = 1,765 mother-child pairs). The Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) model was used to determine the associations between prenatal maternal smoking and in utero exposure to traffic-related air pollution and asthma phenotypes (data were collected when children were at birth, and at 4, 8 and 12 months of age). Adjusted Population Attributable Risk (aPAR) was estimated to measure the impacts of air pollutants on health outcomes. Results: In the first year of life, both single and multi-dimensional asthma phenotypes were positively related to heavy parental smoking, traffic-related air pollution and dampness, but negatively associated with contact with cats and domestic wood heating. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for traffic-related air pollution were the highest [1.71 (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.08-2.72) for ever doctor-diagnosed asthma, 1.44 (95% CI: 1.05-1.99) for bronchiolitis with wheezing, 2.01 (95% CI: 1.23-3.30) for doctor-diagnosed asthma with a history of bronchiolitis]. The aPARs based on these aORs were 13.52%, 9.39%, and 17.78%, respectively. Results persisted for prenatal maternal smoking and in utero exposure to traffic-related air pollution, although statistically significant associations were observed only with the asthma phenotype of ever bronchiolitis. Conclusions: After adjusting for potential confounders, traffic-related air pollution in utero life and in the first year of life, had a greater impact on the development of asthma phenotypes compared to other factors.
