Within the frame of the CLaRyS collaboration, we discuss the assets of using a reduced-intensity in vivo treatment control phase during one or a few beam spots at the beginning of a particle therapy session. By doing so we can improve considerably the conditions for secondary radiation detection and particle radiography. This also makes Time-of-Flight (ToF) resolutions of 100 ps rms feasible for both the transmitted particles and secondary radiations, by means of a single-projectile counting mode using a beam-tagging monitor with time and position registration. This opens up new perspectives for prompt-gamma timing and Compton imaging for range verification. ToF-based proton computed tomography (CT) and ToF-assisted secondary proton vertex imaging in carbon therapy are also discussed, although for the latter, no evidence of any benefit at small observation angles is anticipated. The reduction of the beam intensity during one or a few spots on the various accelerators for particle therapy should not significantly reduce the patient workflow.

In this work are shown the results of the chemical analyses that were carried out to a leached yellowish red ferralitic soil, located in the town of Topes de Collantes, municipality Trinidad, province Sancti Spiritus. Samples were took at 0-10, 10-20, 20-30 cm depth in three areas dedicated to the production of coffee associated Pine, Albizia and Guamo, a row-cropping area and a forest mountain, with approximate dimensions and similar slopes. All the areas belong To the Cooperative of Credits and Services "Lucas Castellanos". The most unfavorable characteristics are in the coffee production areas under Pine and Albizia shade trees and the row-cropping area. The soil fertility was very similar in the natural forest and in the coffee plantation under shadow tree Guamo area. The obtained results show the necessity to settle down short term sustainable agriculture techniques to the farmers in order to get stable yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vaccinia virus (VV) is an effective vaccine and vector but has evolved multiple mechanisms for evading host immunity. We characterized the interactions of VV (TianTan and New York City Board of Health strains) with human gammadelta T cells because of the role they play in immune control of this virus. Exposure to VV failed to trigger proliferative responses in gammadelta T cells from unprimed individuals, but it was an unexpected finding that VV blocked responses to model antigens by the Vgamma2Vdelta2 T cell subset. Infectious or ultraviolet light-inactivated VV inhibited proliferative Vgamma2Vdelta2 T cell responses to phosphoantigens and tumor cells, prevented cytolysis of Daudi B cells, and reduced cytokine production. Inhibiting Vgamma2Vdelta2 T cells may be a mechanism for evading host immunity and increasing VV virulence. Increased VV replication or expression in the absence of gammadelta T cell responses might contribute to its potency as a vaccine against poxvirus and recombinant antigens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies have suggested that not onlyαβ+ T cells, but also the less commonγδ+ T cells may play a role as effectors and immunoregolatory cells in the development and perpetuation of allergic inflammation. The objective of this study was to focus on the role ofγδ+ T cells in atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic relapsing inflammatory disease of the skin, often associated with allergic bronchial asthma. The present study employed flow cytometric analysis to compare numbers and phenotypic characteristics ofγδ+ T cells in the peripheral blood of children with atopic dermatitis and age-matched healthy controls. The percentage of circulating Vγ 9Vδ2+ T lymphocytes was significantly increased in AD patients with respect to the age-matched controls, with a positive correlation with clinical score severity. The prevalent phenotype in both AD patients and controls was CD45RO+, with no differences observed in the percentage of Vδ2+ CD45RO+ between these groups. Conversely, memory CD45RO+ CD62L+ Vδ2+ lymphocytes were significantly lower in AD patients. Furthermore, naive circulating Vδ2+ T lymphocytes were significantly lower in AD children than in aged-matched controls. No correlation was observed between circulating Vγ 9Vδ2+ expansion and IgE serum levels. It was concluded that an association exists between the levels of circulatingγδ+ T lymphocytes and atopic dermatitis, with a positive correlation with clinical score but no link with IgE serum levels. O envelhecimento já se apresenta como uma realidade nas sociedades contemporâneas com o rápido crescimento da população idosa, motivado pelo aumento da expectativa de vida e pela redução da fertilidade e mortalidade. A partir daí, surgem desafios para esse segmento etário, principalmente em países que não se prepararam para tal tendência social, como é o caso do Brasil. Nesse contexto, esta pesquisa propõe-se a compreender os significados da viagem a lazer para o idoso. Como método investigativo, a pesquisa desenha-se como exploratória e descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa, de enfoque etnográfico. Teve-se como lócus de investigação a cidade de São Luís, Maranhão, a partir de um projeto voltado para o idoso da Universidade Integrada da Terceira Idade – UNITI. Como técnicas e instrumentos de coleta, utilizaram-se entrevistas narrativas, observação participante e diário de campo. Como técnica de análise, utilizou-se a análise de conteúdo de Bardin, para que se pudesse elaborar categorias. A coleta de dados segmentou-se em três etapas: a expectativa da viagem, a viagem e a pós-viagem. As categorias de análise e a interpretação dos conteúdos nos indicam que a viagem é uma atividade que atribui sentido à vida do idoso e estimula processos de autonomia, independência, qualidade de vida e expectativa de vida saudável, contribuindo para um envelhecimento com qualidade.

Abstract Background Telemonitoring technology offers one of the most promising alternatives for the provision of health care services at the patient's home. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of a primary care-based telemonitoring intervention on the frequency of hospital admissions. Methods/design A primary care-based randomised controlled trial will be carried out to assess the impact of a telemonitoring intervention aimed at home care patients with heart failure (HF) and/or chronic lung disease (CLD). The results will be compared with those obtained with standard health care practice. The duration of the study will be of one year. Sixty patients will be recruited for the study. In-home patients, diagnosed with HF and/or CLD, aged 14 or above and with two or more hospital admissions in the previous year will be eligible. For the intervention group, telemonitoring will consist of daily patient self-measurements of respiratory-rate, heart-rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, weight and body temperature. Additionally, the patients will complete a qualitative symptom questionnaire daily using the telemonitoring system. Routine telephone contacts will be conducted every fortnight and additional telephone contacts will be carried out if the data received at the primary care centre are out of the established limits. The control group will receive usual care. The primary outcome measure is the number of hospital admissions due to any cause that occurred in a period of 12 months post-randomisation. The secondary outcome measures are: duration of hospital stay, hospital admissions due to HF or CLD, mortality rate, use of health care resources, quality of life, cost-effectiveness, compliance and patient and health care professional satisfaction with the new technology. Discussion The results of this study will shed some light on the effects of telemonitoring for the follow-up and management of chronic patients from a primary care setting. The study may contribute to enhance the understanding of alternative modes of health care provision for medically unstable elderly patients, who bear a high degree of physical and functional deterioration. Abstract Background In lymphocyte subsets, expression of CD56 (neural cell adhesion molecule-1) correlates with cytotoxic effector activity. For cells bearing the Vγ2Vδ2 T cell receptor, isoprenoid pyrophosphate stimulation leads to uniform activation and proliferation, but only a fraction of cells express CD56 and display potent cytotoxic activity against tumor cells. Our goal was to show whether CD56 expression was regulated stochastically, similar to conventional activation antigens, or whether CD56 defined a lineage of cells committed to the cytotoxic phenotype. Results Tracking individual cell clones defined by their Vγ2 chain CDR3 region sequences, we found that CD56 was expressed on precursor cytotoxic T cells already present in the population irrespective of their capacity to proliferate after antigen stimulation. Public T cell receptor sequences found in the CD56+ subset from one individual might appear in the CD56- subset of another donor. The commitment of individual clones to CD56+ or CD56- lineages was stable for each donor over a 1 year interval. Conclusion The ability to express CD56 was not predicted by TCR sequence or by the strength of signal received by the TCR. For γδ T cells, cytotoxic effector function is acquired when cytotoxic precursors within the population are stimulated to proliferate and express CD56. Expression of CD56 defines a committed lineage to the cytotoxic phenotype.

The present work reports the miniaturization of a solid-contact lead (II) ion selective electrode based on 1-benzoyl-3,3-diethylthiourea (BDE) as neutral carrier and tris-2-ethylhexilphosphate (TEHP) as mediator solvent in a polivynil chloride (PVC) matrix. Microelectrodes were prepared with glass capillaries of different diameters (2, 1 y 0,8 mm) and illustrates a good sensitivity to the metallic cation, with a slope close to a Nernstian logarithmic relationship for a divalent ion (29,53 mV/decade). Furthermore, the microelectrodes shows detection limits in order of 10-6 mol/L and a linearity range from 10-6 to 10-3 mol/L. These results are similar to reports for others sensors based on thiourea derivatives and even for commercial selective electrodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: An increasing body of evidence highlights the utility of examining adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) utilizing person-centered analytical approaches, particularly for understanding the organization and co-occurrence of ACEs, and their contributions to risk, vulnerability, and the development of intervention efforts., Methods: In the first study of its kind, this paper uses Latent Class Analysis, to assess ACEs among a large community sample in Abu Dhabi, capital city of the United Arab Emirates, by examining patterns of ACEs and their associated impact on health, mental health, behavioral risk, and adult psychological function in a cross-sectional sample of 922 members of the Abu Dhabi community., Results: Findings support a 3-class solution, representing low-to-no ACEs, Household ACEs, and Violence ACEs among this sample, with variability in the age, sex, and nationality status reflected across classes. ACE categories notably differentiated later adult risk for a suite of diagnoses of health and mental health disorders, risk for elevated screening values for depression, anxiety and stress, and a range of adult risk-related behaviors., Conclusion: These findings are considered in line with the extant literature and form the basis of considerable public health policy and intervention planning in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, and the Arab region., Competing Interests: Declarations.
