Abstract

Quantum dots (QDs) confer a wide range of optical properties to pigments/inks. With new products and applications entering the market, the airborne emissions of QDs-incorporating inks during usage stage at consumer scale (e.g. household printing) and their corresponding impacts towards human health and the environment need to be investigated. In the present work Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) QDs have been selected as a case study. The targets of this study comprise: (i) the characterization under controlled conditions of the emissions during inkjet printing of a prototype of a CdTe QDs nanoadditivated ink and (ii) the assessment of the feasibility to derive human health and freshwater effect factors (EF) for potentially released CdTe QDs with the USEtox® consensus model. Mean particle size after 60 minutes inkjet printing corresponded to 59.52 nm. For human health EF calculation an extrapolation to the human EF of other nanomaterials has been proposed considering CdTe QDs’ specific surface area whereas for the calculation of the freshwater EF, few of the data available have revealed suitable. A generic constraint to calculate both EFs for CdTe QDs released throughout the life cycle of a product incorporating them is related to the absence of information corresponding to their specific (eco)toxicological impacts.

Abstract

Even if it has been claimed that Life Cycle Assessment is an essential tool to analyze, evaluate, understand and manage the environmental and health impacts of nanotechnology, few studies incorporate characterization factors (CFs) for human toxicity and freshwater ecotoxicity accounting for the impacts of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) beyond their manufacturing stage. The objective of the present work consisted in identifying the correspondence between the information required and outputs provided by the USEtox® consensus model (which is not nanospecific) and the SimpleBox4Nano model (which accounts for nanospecific processes, e.g. aggregation, attachment and dissolution for Fate Factor derivatization) in order to assess the possibility of integrating the two to derive size-dependent CFs for the varying sizes of ENMs throughout their life cycle. The possibility to combine and integrate the two models appeared to be limited since there is no absolute correspondence between the two of them.

29. Functionalization of photosensitized silica nanoparticles for advanced photodynamic therapy of cancer

Abstract

BODIPY dyes have recently attracted attention as potential photosensitizers. In this work, commercial and novel photosensitizers (PSs) based on BODIPY chromophores (haloBODIPYs and orthogonal dimers strategically designed with intense bands in the blue, green or red region of the visible spectra and high singlet oxygen production) were covalently linked to mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) further functionalized with PEG and folic acid (FA). MSNs approximately 50 nm in size with different functional groups were synthesized to allow multiple alternatives of PS-PEG-FA decoration of their external surface. Different combinations varying the type of PS (commercial Rose Bengal, Thionine and Chlorine e6 or custom-made BODIPY-based), the linkage design, and the length of PEG are detailed. All the nanosystems were physicochemically characterized (morphology, diameter, size distribution and PS loaded amount) and photophysically studied (absorption capacity, fluorescence efficiency, and singlet oxygen production) in suspension. 34. Degradation and ecotoxicity of new and used fishing nets. First results of a research project in the south-eastern Bay of Biscay

Abstract

After more than 30 years of research on plastic pollution, data on sources and ecotoxicity are still fragmentary. Several studies have suggested that fishing gear (FG) is a major source of secondary micro and nanoplastics (MNPs). In this context, we focused our research on the MNPs and additives coming from the degradation of plastic FG during their life cycle, especially those used in the south-eastern Bay of Biscay (BoB) (PLASFITO project). First, a protocol using UV irradiation and water agitation was set up to artificially age fishing nets (FNs). Then the Microtox® test using the marine bacteria Aliivibrio fischeri was conducted to screen the ecotoxicity of FN leachates. The study was conducted on three conventional gillnets made of polyamide (PA) with different additive compositions, one in-development gillnet made of bio-sourced and biodegradable polybutylene succinate (PBS), and one polyethylene (PE) trawl net. Each experiment was conducted on new and used FNs. Artificial ageing caused structural and morphological modifications of the polymers, revealed by FTIR-ATR, RAMAN and SEM, and induced the release of MNPs into the water. The produced particles were not only fibres, as expected, but were mainly micro fragments. The degradation kinetics differed between FNs depending on the different polymers and especially on the additives´ composition. Results of the Microtox® test revealed significant toxicity of some FNs' leachates (PA and PBS). However, because the effects on Aliivibrio fischeri were not the same for all the PA FNs, we assume that the toxicity depended on the additives' composition and also on the wear of the FNs. The emphasis on the environmental toxicity of new ready-for-use FNs and the possible major role of additives raise concerns about the potential risks of certain FNs for marine organisms. 40. Lipidomic analysis of mussel hemocytes exposed to polystyrene nanoplastics

Abstract

Plastics production and usage has exponentially increased in the last decades around the world. Due to the insufficient waste management, a significant amount of plastic ends up in the environment, where they tend to fragment into micro- and nano-plastics (NPs), and accumulate in aquatic organisms with still unknown effects. Although studies have indicated that lipid metabolism is a main target of NPs, this mechanism has not been extensively explored. In this study, we evaluated changes in the lipidome of mussel hemocytes after exposure to polystyrene (PS) NPs of 50 and 500 nm, at two different concentrations (106 and 109 particles/mL) for 24 h. The lipidome of hemocytes, analyzed by FIA-ESI (±) Orbitrap, was characterized by a relatively high abundance of cholesteryl esters (CEs) and phosphatidylcholine-plasmalogens (PC-Os/PC-Ps), involved in cell's defense against oxidative stress and membrane reorganization. In hemocytes exposed to PS NPs, a number of highly unsaturated membrane lipids were down-regulated, indicating a reorganization of the cell membranes after exposure to the particles and an oxidation of lipids with a high number of double bonds. This reduction was more evident after exposure to 50 nm NPs -both concentrations- and 500 nm NPs -high concentration-. The analysis of culture medium suggested increased release of vesicles enriched in triglycerides (TGs). The relevance of these responses to NP exposure on the immune function of hemocytes remains to be investigated.
