Abstract: In March 2013, the Nemo Phase-2 tower was successfully deployed at 80 km off-shore Capo Passero (Italy) at 3500 m depth. The tower operated continuously until August 2014. We present the results of the atmospheric muon analysis from the data collected in 411 days of live time. The zenith-angle distribution of atmospheric muons was measured and results compared with Monte Carlo simulations. The associated depth intensity relation was then measured and compared with previous measurements and theoretical predictions.

2. Vectorial polaritons in the quantum motion of a levitated nanosphere

Abstract: The strong coupling between elementary excitations of the electromagnetic field (photons) and quantized mechanical vibrations (phonons) produces hybrid quasi-particle states, known as phonon-polaritons. Their typical signature is the avoided crossing between the eigenfrequencies of the coupled system, as paradigmatically illustrated by the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian, and observed in quantum electrodynamics experiments where cavity photons are coupled to atoms, ions, excitons, spin ensambles and superconducting qubits. In this work, we demonstrate the generation of phonon-polaritons in the quantum motion of an optically-levitated nanosphere. The particle is trapped in high vacuum by an optical tweezer and strongly coupled to a single cavity mode by coherent scattering of the tweezer photons. The two-dimensional motion splits into two nearly-degenerate components that, together with the optical cavity mode, define an optomechanical system with three degrees-of-freedom. As such, when entering the strong coupling regime, we observe hybrid light-mechanical states with a dispersion law typical of tripartite quantum systems. Remarkably, the independent components of motion here identify a physical vibration direction on a plane that, similarly to the polarization of light, confers a vectorial nature to the polariton field. Our results pave the way to novel protocols for quantum information transfer between photonic and phononic components and represent a key-step towards the demonstration of optomechanical entangled states at room temperature.

Abstract: Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multimegaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1 - 20 GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. Abstract: The main objectives of the KM3NeT Collaboration are i) the discovery and subsequent observation of high-energy neutrino sources in the Universe and ii) the determination of the mass hierarchy of neutrinos. These objectives are strongly motivated by two recent important discoveries, namely: 1) The high-energy astrophysical neutrino signal reported by IceCube and 2) the sizable contribution of electron neutrinos to the third neutrino mass eigenstate as reported by Daya Bay, Reno and others. To meet these objectives, the KM3NeT Collaboration plans to build a new Research Infrastructure consisting of a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea. A phased and distributed implementation is pursued which maximises the access to regional funds, the availability of human resources and the synergetic opportunities for the earth and sea sciences community. Three suitable deep-sea sites are identified, namely off-shore Toulon (France), Capo Passero (Italy) and Pylos (Greece). The infrastructure will consist of three so-called building blocks. A building block comprises 115 strings, each string comprises 18 optical modules and each optical module comprises 31 photo-multiplier tubes. Each building block thus constitutes a 3-dimensional array of photo sensors that can be used to detect the Cherenkov light produced by relativistic particles emerging from neutrino interactions. Two building blocks will be configured to fully explore the IceCube signal with different methodology, improved resolution and complementary field of view, including the Galactic plane. Abstract: A prototype detection unit of the KM3NeT deep-sea neutrino telescope has been installed at 3500m depth 80km offshore the Italian coast. KM3NeT in its final configuration will contain several hundreds of detection units. Each detection unit is a mechanical structure anchored to the sea floor, held vertical by a submerged buoy and supporting optical modules for the detection of Cherenkov light emitted by charged secondary particles emerging from neutrino interactions. This prototype string implements three optical modules with 31 photomultiplier tubes each. These optical modules were developed by the KM3NeT Collaboration to enhance the detection capability of neutrino interactions. The prototype detection unit was operated since its deployment in May 2014 until its decommissioning in July 2015. Reconstruction of the particle trajectories from the data requires a nanosecond accuracy in the time calibration. A procedure for relative time calibration of the photomultiplier tubes contained in each optical module is described. This procedure is based on the measured coincidences produced in the sea by the 40K background light and can easily be expanded to a detector with several thousands of optical modules. The time offsets between the different optical modules are obtained using LED nanobeacons mounted inside them. A set of data corresponding to 600 hours of livetime was analysed. The results show good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations of the expected optical background and the signal from atmospheric muons. An almost background-free sample of muons was selected by filtering the time correlated signals on all the three optical modules. Abstract: The NEMO Phase-2 tower is the first detector which was operated underwater for more than one year at the "record" depth of 3500 m. It was designed and built within the framework of the NEMO (NEutrino Mediterranean Observatory) project. The 380 m high tower was successfully installed in March 2013 80 km offshore Capo Passero (Italy). This is the first prototype operated on the site where the italian node of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope will be built. The installation and operation of the NEMO Phase-2 tower has proven the functionality of the infrastructure and the operability at 3500 m depth. A more than one year long monitoring of the deep water characteristics of the site has been also provided. In this paper the infrastructure and the tower structure and instrumentation are described. The results of long term optical background measurements are presented. The rates show stable and low baseline values, compatible with the contribution of 40K light emission, with a small percentage of light bursts due to bioluminescence. All these features confirm the stability and good optical properties of the site., Comment: 12 pages, 17 figures

Abstract: After reviewing the importance of light as a probe for testing the structure of space-time, we describe the GINGER project. GINGER will be a three-dimensional array of large size ring-lasers able to measure the de Sitter and Lense-Thirring effects. The instrument will be located at the underground laboratory of GranSasso, in Italy. We describe the preliminary actions and measurements already under way and present the full road map to GINGER. The intermediate apparatuses GP2 and GINGERino are described. Abstract: The results of the analysis of the data collected with the NEMO Phase-2 tower, deployed at 3500 m depth about 80 km off-shore Capo Passero (Italy), are presented. Cherenkov photons detected with the photomultipliers tubes were used to reconstruct the tracks of atmospheric muons. Their zenith-angle distribution was measured and the results compared with Monte Carlo simulations. An evaluation of the systematic effects due to uncertainties on environmental and detector parameters is also included. The associated depth intensity relation was evaluated and compared with previous measurements and theoretical predictions. With the present analysis, the muon depth intensity relation has been measured up to 13 km of water equivalent., Comment: submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract: The first prototype of a photo-detection unit of the future KM3NeT neutrino telescope has been deployed in the deep waters of the Mediterranean Sea. This digital optical module has a novel design with a very large photocathode area segmented by the use of 31 three inch photomultiplier tubes. It has been integrated in the ANTARES detector for in-situ testing and validation. This paper reports on the first months of data taking and rate measurements. The analysis results highlight the capabilities of the new module design in terms of background suppression and signal recognition. The directionality of the optical module enables the recognition of multiple Cherenkov photons from the same $^{40}$K decay and the localization bioluminescent activity in the neighbourhood. The single unit can cleanly identify atmospheric muons and provide sensitivity to the muon arrival directions.

Abstract: An excellent hadron to electron discrimination is a crucial aspect of calorimeter-based experiments in astroparticle physics. Standard discrimination techniques require full shower development and fine granularity but in space detectors severe limitations exist due to constraints on dimensions, weight and power consumption. A possible approach is to exploit the different neutron yield of electromagnetic and hadronic showers. NEUCAL is a light and compact innovative neutron detector, to be used as an auxiliary complement of electromagnetic calorimeters. This new approach to neutron counting relies on scintillation detectors which are sensitive to the moderation phase of the neutron component. The NEUCAL prototype has been placed after a conventional calorimeter and tested with high energy beams of pions and positrons. Abstract: 13 pages, 6 figures, tables, In the deep sea, the sense of time is dependent on geophysical fluctuations, such as internal tides and atmospheric-related inertial currents, rather than day-night rhythms. Deep-sea neutrino telescopes instrumented with light detecting Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMT) can be used to describe the synchronization of bioluminescent activity of abyssopelagic organisms with hydrodynamic cycles. PMT readings at 8 different depths (from 3069 to 3349 m) of the NEMO Phase 2 prototype, deployed offshore Capo Passero (Sicily) at the KM3NeT-Italia site, were used to characterize rhythmic bioluminescence patterns in June 2013, in response to water mass movements. We found a significant (p < 0.05) 20.5 h periodicity in the bioluminescence signal, corresponding to inertial fluctuations. Waveform and Fourier analyses of PMT data and tower orientation were carried out to identify phases (i.e. the timing of peaks) by subdividing time series on the length of detected inertial periodicity. A phase overlap between rhythms and cycles suggests a mechanical stimulation of bioluminescence, as organisms carried by currents collide with the telescope infrastructure, resulting in the emission of light. A bathymetric shift in PMT phases indicated that organisms travelled in discontinuous deep-sea undular vortices consisting of chains of inertially pulsating mesoscale cyclones/anticyclones, which to date remain poorly known

Abstract: Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multimegaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1-20 GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. These results will therefore also be applicable to similar detectors/media, such as those in ice.

Abstract: The first prototype of a photo-detection unit of the future KM3NeT neutrino telescope has been deployed in the deep waters of the Mediterranean Sea. This digital optical module has a novel design with a very large photocathode area segmented by the use of 31 three inch photomultiplier tubes. It has been integrated in the ANTARES detector for in-situ testing and validation. This paper reports on the first months of data taking and rate measurements. The analysis results highlight the capabilities of the new module design in terms of background suppression and signal recognition. The directionality of the optical module enables the recognition of multiple Cherenkov photons from the same $^{40}$K decay and the localization bioluminescent activity in the neighbourhood. The single unit can cleanly identify atmospheric muons and provide sensitivity to the muon arrival directions.

Abstract: The main objectives of the KM3NeT Collaboration are (i) the discovery and subsequent observation of high-energy neutrino sources in the Universe and (ii) the determination of the mass hierarchy of neutrinos. These objectives are strongly motivated by two recent important discoveries, namely: (1) the high-energy astrophysical neutrino signal reported by IceCube and (2) the sizable contribution of electron neutrinos to the third neutrino mass eigenstate as reported by Daya Bay, Reno and others. To meet these objectives, the KM3NeT Collaboration plans to build a new Research Infrastructure consisting of a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea. A phased and distributed implementation is pursued which maximises the access to regional funds, the availability of human resources and the synergistic opportunities for the Earth and sea sciences community. Three suitable deep-sea sites are selected, namely off-shore Toulon (France), Capo Passero (Sicily, Italy) and Pylos (Peloponnese, Greece). The infrastructure will consist of three so-called building blocks. A building block comprises 115 strings, each string comprises 18 optical modules and each optical module comprises 31 photo-multiplier tubes. Each building block thus constitutes a three-dimensional array of photo sensors that can be used to detect the Cherenkov light produced by relativistic particles emerging from neutrino interactions. Two building blocks will be sparsely configured to fully explore the IceCube signal with similar instrumented volume, different methodology, improved resolution and complementary field of view, including the galactic plane. One building block will be densely configured to precisely measure atmospheric neutrino oscillations.

Abstract: The KM3NeT research infrastructure, currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea, will host neutrino telescopes for the identification of neutrino sources in the Universe and for studies of the neutrino mass hierarchy. These telescopes will house hundreds of thousands of photomultiplier tubes that will have to be operated in a stable and reliable fashion. In this context, the stability of the dark counts has been investigated for photomultiplier tubes with negative high voltage on the photocathode and held in insulating support structures made of 3D printed nylon material. Small gaps between the rigid support structure and the photomultiplier tubes in the presence of electric fields can lead to discharges that produce dark count rates that are highly variable. A solution was found by applying the same insulating varnish as used for the high voltage bases directly to the outside of the photomultiplier tubes. This transparent conformal coating provides a convenient and inexpensive method of insulation. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

Abstract: A prototype detection unit of the KM3NeT deep-sea neutrino telescope has been installed at 3500m depth 80 km offshore the Italian coast. KM3NeT in its final configuration will contain several hundreds of detection units. Each detection unit is a mechanical structure anchored to the sea floor, held vertical by a submerged buoy and supporting optical modules for the detection of Cherenkov light emitted by charged secondary particles emerging from neutrino interactions. This prototype string implements three optical modules with 31 photomultiplier tubes each. These optical modules were developed by the KM3NeT Collaboration to enhance the detection capability of neutrino interactions. The prototype detection unit was operated since its deployment in May 2014 until its decommissioning in July 2015. Reconstruction of the particle trajectories from the data requires a nanosecond accuracy in the time calibration. A procedure for relative time calibration of the photomultiplier tubes contained in each optical module is described. This procedure is based on the measured coincidences produced in the sea by the $$^{40}$$40K background light and can easily be expanded to a detector with several thousands of optical modules. The time offsets between the different optical modules are obtained using LED nanobeacons mounted inside them. A set of data corresponding to 600 h of livetime was analysed. The results show good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations of the expected optical background and the signal from atmospheric muons. An almost background-free sample of muons was selected by filtering the time correlated signals on all the three optical modules. The zenith angle of the selected muons was reconstructed with a precision of about 3$$^\circ $$∘. © 2016, The Author(s).

Abstract: The first prototype of a photo-detection unit of the future KM3NeT neutrino telescope has been deployed in the deep waters of the Mediterranean Sea. This digital optical module has a novel design with a very large photocathode area segmented by the use of 31 three inch photomultiplier tubes. It has been integrated in the ANTARES detector for in-situ testing and validation. This paper reports on the first months of data taking and rate measurements. The analysis results highlight the capabilities of the new module design in terms of background suppression and signal recognition. The directionality of the optical module enables the recognition of multiple Cherenkov photons from the same40 K decay and the localisation of bioluminescent activity in the neighbourhood. The single unit can cleanly identify atmospheric muons and provide sensitivity to the muon arrival directions. © 2014, The Author(s).

Abstract: The stability of dynamical states characterized by a uniform firing rate (splay states) is analyzed in a network of N globally pulse-coupled rotators (neurons) subject to a generic velocity field. In particular, we analyze short-wavelength modes that were known to be marginally stable in the infinite N limit and show that the corresponding Floquet exponent scale as 1/N2. Moreover, we find that the sign, and thereby the stability, of this spectral component is determined by the sign of the average derivative of the velocity field. For leaky-integrate-and-fire neurons, an analytic expression for the whole spectrum is obtained. In the intermediate case of continuous velocity fields, the Floquet exponents scale faster than 1/N2 (namely, as 1/N4) and we even find strictly neutral directions in a wider class than the sinusoidal velocity fields considered by Watanabe and Strogatz [Physica D 74, 197 (1994)].

Abstract: Obiettivi: l’ospedale dovrebbe rappresentare un modello per la promozione della salute, tuttavia, nonostante i divieti di legge, l’abitudine di fumare in ospedale è ancora diffusa. Obiettivo dello studio è rilevare l’abitudine al fumo di personale sanitario, pazienti e visitatori, nei locali dell’AOUS.Metodi: alcuni studenti universitari, durante le loro attività curricolari, hanno percorso i locali del policlinico in orari diversi, contando il numero di persone incontrate, operatori sanitari e pazienti/visitatori, e indicando il numero di coloro che stavano fumando, in entrambe le categorie. Questo studio è stato ripetuto negli anni 1998, 1999 e 2003. Risultati: la prevalenza di persone che stavano fumando è risultata del 6,4% nel 1998, del 3,8% nel 1999 e dell’1,1% nel 2003. La prevalenza di operatori sanitari che fumavano rispetto al totale dei fumatori è risultata rispettivamente del 25%, del 26% e del 23,8%. Nei due anni passati, nell’atrio, nel bar e nelle zone antistanti i reparti c’era una maggiore presenza di persone che fumavano; mentre nell’ultima indagine sono stati riscontrati più fumatori, oltre che nell’atrio, nei corridoi del piano didattico, zona non indagata in precedenza. Nell’ultima rilevazione, non sono stati individuati fumatori nei due bar del policlinico; mentre sono sempre stati rilevati, in numero esiguo, operatori sanitari che fumano all’interno delle corsie di degenza.Conclusioni: la diminuzione costante del numero di fumatori in ospedale, mostra come ci sia stato negli ultimi anni un rispetto sempre maggiore del divieto di fumo nei luoghi di cura. Il coinvolgimento di futuri medici permette di promuovere il problema fumo in ospedale.

Abstract: Introduzione: la comorbidità è un importante fattore confondente negli studi epidemiologici valutativi dell’assistenza ospedaliera. Diversi strumenti di risk adjustment misurano la complessità della malattia, consentendo di correlarla al consumo di risorse assistenziali, agli esiti, nonchè di confrontare studi eseguiti in tempi e realtà diversi.Obiettivi: - Standardizzare per complessità casistica la mortalità dei pazienti assistiti da un grande ospedale; - Identificare le variabili in grado di migliorare la capacità predittiva di mortalità intraospedaliera (IM). Materiali eMetodi: sono state analizzate 40.801 schede di dimissione prodotte dal Policlinico Senese nel 2001. Sono stati studiati i tassi di IM specifici per Charlson Index Score (CSI): quest’ultimo considera 19 categorie di patologia e si basa sull’ ICD-IX-CM. Le variabili studiate mediante analisi bivariate e regressione logistica, sono state: CSI (codificato in 5 livelli 0, 1, 2, 3, 4), lunghezza del ricovero (LR), sesso ed età. Risultati: CSI è risultato associato con IM (p‹0.001). Sesso, età e LR sono risultati associati sia con CSI (p‹0.001) che IM (p‹0.001). Confrontando i 4 livelli di CSI con quello di riferimento (0), le seguenti Odds Ratio (OR) di IM sono state trovate: Livello 1 verso livello 0 OR: 6.79 (p‹0.001), Livello 2 verso livello 0 OR: 15.8 (p‹0.001), Livello 3 verso livello 0 OR: 9.36 (p‹0.001), Livello 4 verso livello 0 OR: 7.4 (p‹0.001). La variabile sesso non è risultata aver un effetto confondente tra CSI e IM al contrario delle variabili LR ed età.Conclusioni: il CSI aiuta a valutare (predire) il rischio di mortalità intraospedaliera, sebbene in modo non lineare. Abbiamo sempre rilevato valori più alti di mortalità confrontando i livelli 1, 2, 3, e 4 con quello di riferimento (0). In particolare il valore più alto lo ha raggiunto il secondo livello; il terzo ed il quarto, che avrebbero dovuto identificare le condizioni più a rischio, hanno mostrato una mortalità inferiore al secondo livello, ma superiore al primo.
