Abstract

In a magnetization vs. temperature (M vs. T) experiment, the blocking region of a magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) assembly is the interval of T values were the system begins to respond to an applied magnetic field H when heating the sample from the lower reachable temperature. The location of this region is determined by the anisotropy energy barrier depending on the applied field H, the volume V, the magnetic anisotropy constant K of the MNPs and the observing time of the technique. In the general case of a polysized sample, a representative blocking temperature value $T_B$ can be estimated from ZFC-FC experiments as a way to determine the effective anisotropy constant. In this work, a numerical solved Stoner-Wolfharth two level model with thermal agitation is used to simulate ZFC-FC curves of monosized and polysized samples and to determine the best method for obtaining a representative $T_B$ value of polysized samples. The results corroborate a technique based on the T derivative of the difference between ZFC and FC curves proposed by Micha et al(the good) and demonstrate its relation with two alternative methods: the ZFC maximum (the bad) and inflection point (the ugly). The derivative method is then applied to experimental data, obtaining the $T_B$ distribution of a polysized $Fe_3O_4$ MNP sample suspended in hexane with an excellent agreement with TEM characterization.

8. A complex systems approach to connectivity to international markets

Improving connectivity is increasingly a topic at the centre of the international trade and transport policy agendas. An examination on available documents and studies in both the policy-making and the academic fields shows that the concept of connectivity has often been defined in different ways, and thus has taken a variety of meanings. This poses the questions: what is freight connectivity?; what are its determinants in the context of international trade? The researcher is not aware of any study that has analysed, in a comprehensive and systematic way, the different perspectives, determinants and measures of connectivity to international markets. Using a mixed-methods approach that includes a systematic literature review encompassing literature in the fields of Transport Engineering and Economics, International Economics, Supply Chain Management, Physics and Transport Geography; a survey and in-depth interviews in three countries; comparative analysis of connectivity metrics in a variety of fields; and network analysis of over 100 networks, this Dissertation contributes to fill this gap by providing: (i) a complex systems approach to connectivity to international markets; (ii) a comprehensive definition of connectivity to international markets which encompasses the different factors that influence it; and (iii) a novel method to assess connectivity to international markets using network analysis. Further contributions of this research include insights on the multi-layered characteristics of both international trade flows and its support system; the perspective of emerging economies; and the study of a region – the Americas – mostly overlooked by the literature on complex systems applied to trade and transport networks. It is expected that a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive and more precise understanding and assessment of the determinants of connectivity will contribute to identify and design more effective policies to address barriers impeding the fast, smooth access to international markets, as well as guide future multi-disciplinary research and analysis in academia and policy-making.

Abstract

A Martian meteorite, magnetic inks, drug targeting, batteries, contrasts for MRI, data storage or even clinical thermo-therapy seem to have no connection, but all have in common a dark mineral called magnetite. However, in each of these applications this iron oxide shows up with different forms because their optical, electrical and magnetic properties are strongly dependent on size, shape and kind of surfactant. In this sense the control of this characteristics has long been of scientific and technological interest. In an AC magnetic field-assisted cancer therapy, \textit{e.g.}, from a biological point of view, the interaction of the nanoparticles with cells is critically determined by the surface properties which control their fate in biological environments. Besides the size, factors as the shape also seems to affect the cellular uptake. On the other hand, the specific absorption rate (SAR) at a fixed frequency and magnetic field, is hugely dependent on average and distribution of size, shape, crystalline anisotropy, and degree of aggregation or agglomeration of the nanoparticles. Each of these factors contributes to an independent energy loss mechanism: N\'eel relaxation, Brown relaxation or magnetic hysteresis loss. Thus, the key for improving the efficiency of a given application is the knowledge about the morphological control.

Abstract

Introduction: The percentage of patients diagnosed with pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (altogether PPGL) carrying known germline mutations in one of the over fifteen susceptibility genes identified to date has dramatically increased during the last two decades, accounting for up to 35-40% of PPGL patients. Moreover, the application of NGS to the diagnosis of PPGL detects unexpected co-occurrences of pathogenic allelic variants in different susceptibility genes. Methods: Herein we uncover several cases with dual mutations in NF1 and other PPGL genes by targeted sequencing. We studied the molecular characteristics of the tumours with co-occurrent mutations, using omic tools to gain insight into the role of these events in tumour development. Results: Amongst 23 patients carrying germline NF1 mutations, targeted sequencing revealed additional pathogenic germline variants in DLST (n=1) and MDH2 (n=2), and two somatic mutations in H3-3A and PRKAR1A. Three additional patients, with somatic mutations in NF1 were found carrying germline pathogenic mutations in SDHB or DLST, and a somatic truncating mutation in ATRX. Two of the cases with dual germline mutations showed multiple pheochromocytomas or extra-adrenal paragangliomas - an extremely rare clinical finding in NF1 patients. Transcriptional and methylation profiling and metabolite assessment showed an “intermediate signature” to suggest that both variants had a pathological role in tumour development. Discussion: In conclusion, mutations affecting genes involved in different pathways (pseudohypoxic and receptor tyrosine kinase signalling) co-occurring in the same patient could provide a selective advantage for the development of PPGL, and explain the variable expressivity and incomplete penetrance observed in some patients.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In patients with recurrent ventricular tachycardia (VT), STereotactic Arrhythmia Radioablation (STAR) shows promising results. The STOPSTORM consortium was established to investigate and harmonise STAR treatment in Europe. The primary goals of this benchmark study were to standardise contouring of organs at risk (OAR) for STAR, including detailed substructures of the heart, and accredit each participating centre. MATERIALS AND METHODS Centres within the STOPSTORM consortium were asked to delineate 31 OAR in three STAR cases. Delineation was reviewed by the consortium expert panel and after a dedicated workshop feedback and accreditation was provided to all participants. Further quantitative analysis was performed by calculating DICE similarity coefficients (DSC), median distance to agreement (MDA), and 95th percentile distance to agreement (HD95). RESULTS Twenty centres participated in this study. Based on DSC, MDA and HD95, the delineations of well-known OAR in radiotherapy were similar, such as lungs (median DSC=0.96, median MDA=0.1mm and median HD95=1.1mm) and aorta (median DSC=0.90, median MDA=0.1mm and median HD95=1.5mm). Some centres did not include the gastro-oesophageal junction, leading to differences in stomach and oesophagus delineations. For cardiac substructures, such as chambers (median DSC=0.83, median MDA=0.2mm and median HD95=0.5mm), valves (median DSC=0.16, median MDA=4.6mm and median HD95=16.0mm), coronary arteries (median DSC=0.4, median MDA=0.7mm and median HD95=8.3mm) and the sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes (median DSC=0.29, median MDA=4.4mm and median HD95=11.4mm), deviations between centres occurred more frequently. After the dedicated workshop all centres were accredited and contouring consensus guidelines for STAR were established. Abstract

Hybrid structures composed of exfoliated expanded graphite (EG) and iron oxide nanocrystals have been produced by an ex situ process. The iron oxide nanoparticles coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), or poly(acrylic) acid (PAA) were integrated onto the exfoliated EG flakes by mixing their aqueous suspensions at room temperature under support of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccin-nimide (NHS). EG flakes have been used both, naked and functionalized with branched polyethylenimine (PEI). Complete integration of two constituents has been achieved and mainteined stable for more than 12 months. No preferential spatial distribution of anchoring sites for attachement of iron oxide nanoparticles has been observed, regardless EG flakes have been used naked or functionalized with PEI molecules. The structural and physico-chemical characteristics of the exfoliated expanded graphite and its hybrids nanostructures has been investigated by SEM, TEM, FTIR and Raman techniques. The aim of this article is to ascertain whether grade-12 students have sufficient background knowledge to explain the properties of acids, bases, and salts from their constituent ions or molecules. In addition, this research seeks to discern if certain learning difficulties are due to this lack of knowledge. Two concept maps are used for evaluation including the conceptual and procedural knowledge of acid-base behavior of substances. The diagnostic instrument consists of five questionnaires and two interviews. This study reveals that grade-12 students lack some of the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the acid-base behavior of substances. This could explain why students cannot differentiate between an ionic and non-ionic substance and that they associate the existence of H or OH in the formula with acid or basic reaction, respectively, without differentiating between atoms and ions. Students do not understand the different types of particles or the meaning of the subscript or superscript in a polyatomic ion formula. They do not differentiate between the ion and atom of an element and consequently find it difficult to interpret the properties of substances such as solution in water and electrical conductivity. 26. How are the Concepts and Theories of Acid-Base Reactions Presented? Chemistry in Textbooks and as Presented by Teachers

Abstract

This paper investigates the views of science and scientific activity that can be found in chemistry textbooks and heard from teachers when acid-base reactions are introduced to grade 12 and university chemistry students. First, the main macroscopic and microscopic conceptual models are developed. Second, we attempt to show how the existence of views of science in textbooks and of chemistry teachers contributes to an impoverished image of chemistry. A varied design has been elaborated to analyse some epistemological deficiencies in teaching acid?base reactions. Textbooks have been analysed and teachers have been interviewed. The results obtained show that the teaching process does not emphasize the macroscopic presentation of acids and bases. Macroscopic and microscopic conceptual models involved in the explanation of acid-base processes are mixed in textbooks and by teachers. Furthermore, the non-problematic introduction of concepts, such as the hydrolysis concept, and the linear, cumulative view of acid-base theories (Arrhenius and Bronsted) were detected.

Abstract

Background: Utilization of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for brain metastases (BM) has become the technique of choice as opposed to whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT). The aim of this work is to evaluate the feasibility and potential benefits in terms of normal tissue (NT) and dose escalation of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in SRS metastasis treatment. A VMAT optimization procedure has therefore been developed for internal dose scaling which minimizes planner dependence. Materials and methods: Five patient-plans incorporating treatment with frame-based SRS with dynamic conformal arc technique (DA) were re-planned for VMAT. The lesions selected were between 4-6 cm(3). The same geometry used in the DA plans was maintained for the VMAT cases. A VMAT planning procedure was performed attempting to scale the dose in inner auxiliary volumes, and to explore the potential for dose scaling with this technique. Comparison of dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters were obtained. Results: VMAT allows a superior NT sparing plus conformity and dose scaling using the auxiliary volumes. The VMAT results were significantly superior in NT sparing, improving both the V-10 and V-12 values in all cases, with a 2-3 cm(3) saving. In addition, VMAT improves the dose coverage D-95 by about 05 Gy. The objective of dose escalation was achieved with VMAT with an increment of the Dmean and the Dmedian of about 2 Gy. Conclusions: This work shows a benefit of VMAT in SRS treatment with significant NT sparing. AVMAT optimization procedure, based on auxiliary inner volumes, has been developed, enabling internal dose escalation.

Abstract

The compounds (Ni(tren)(1,3-dtsq)(H2O)) (1) and (Ni2(tren)2(1,3-dtsq))(ClO4)2 (2) (tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine) exhibit monodentate and bidentate coordination modes, respectively. Both the compounds crystallize in the monoclinic system. In X-ray crystallographic structure, Ni forms distorted octahedral conformation in 1 and 2, and the tren group serves as a tetradentate ligand through its four nitrogen atoms. A solution containing a 2:1/2:9 (Ni(tren))(super 2+):1,3-dtsq(super 2-):ClO4(super -) molar ratio generates 1. An excess amount of (Ni(tren))(super 2+) generates 2.

Abstract

X-ray analysis of the synthesis, crystal and molecular structure of (Cu4(tren)4(C4O4))(ClO4)6 shows that the compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2. The compound has been synthesized by using tris(2-aminoethyl)amine as a blocking ligand. The squarato group acts as a tetra-monodentate ligand, and the level of intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling is largest among the squarato-containing bridged copper complexes. The compound exists as trigonal bipyramidal with tren terminal nitrogen atoms in equatorial positions.

Abstract

Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles with diameters d, 7 nm LT = d LT = 12 nm, were synthesized by thermal decomposition of Fe(acac)(3). Different experimental conditions, keeping constant concetration of Fe ions in solvent, showed that the heating rates is the most important parameter determining the final particle size. Use of two different solvents, 1-eicosene and 1-octadecene, yielded similar nanoparticle sizes (7.1 nm LT = d LT = 7.5 nm), but different magnetic anisotropies. All samples were superparamagnetic at room temperature. Spin disordering was inferred in samples coated with trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) co-ligand in addition to oleic acid and oleyamine. The heating ability of similar to 12 nm-sized nanoparticles dispersed in hexane under alternating magnetic fields (3.98 kA/m LT = H-0 LT = 23.87 kA/m; 229.3 kHz LT = f LT = 828 kHz) has been studied, finding a nearly quadratic dependence upon H-0, as expected from the linear response theory.
