Abstract This paper describes the performance of a seabed benchmark system for measuring ground deformation associated with underwater volcanism. The system is installed in the center of the Aira Caldera, Japan, on the caldera floor 30 m below the sea surface. This is the first attempt to directly measure the expected ground deformation within a flooded caldera in Japan. The system consists of an anchor, a universal joint, a rigid steel shaft, a float, and a deck. A global navigation satellite system antenna array, consisting of a primary antenna and auxiliary antennas, is installed at the top of the moving buoy to monitor the position of the benchmark at the caldera bottom. A post-processing procedure is used to reduce the tilt of the master antenna based on measurements made by the auxiliary antennas. The system was installed in March, 2023, and has since been operating successfully with an acceptable measurement standard deviation. Graphical Abstract

Geothermal exploration targets large magmatic intrusions as heat sources because of their size, longevity, and amount of stored energy, but as shallow volcanic plumbing systems comprise numerous smaller intrusions, their geothermal potential warrants consideration. Here, we evaluate the geothermal impact of dykes and sills on caldera-infill rocks. We present geological data and geothermometry on intrusions in the eroded Breiðuvík caldera in Northeast Iceland, which serves as an analogue to the active, and geothermally exploited, Krafla volcano. These data inform 2D finite element models of dyke and sill intrusions that consider heat transfer in porous media. Our results indicate that small intrusions create considerable thermal anomalies in their immediate vicinity. These anomalies are larger-magnitude and longer-lasting for individual thick sills and dykes, but networks of smaller sills and dykes emplaced close in time and space can create more widespread thermal anomalies that may be viable economic targets for decades after their emplacement.

Hydrothermal activity is abundant in the area between the North Eastern Lau Spreading Center and the Tofua intra-oceanic island arc with multiple active sites in the rear-arc at the Mata and Niuatahi volcanoes. We report geochemical data for high-temperature vent fluids sampled from within the caldera of Niuatahi volcano. Hydrothermal fluids were sampled from three vent sites: South Central, Southwestern Cone and Northern Cone located in water depths between 1607 and 1699 m. Maximum temperatures of 334 °C were measured and pH values were as low as 2.8. The vent fluids were characterized by depletions in Mg, SO 4 and U as well as an enrichment of (trace) metals (e.g., Fe, Mn, K, Li) and dissolved gases (e.g., H 2 S, CO 2 , H 2) relative to seawater. Water-rock ratios calculated based on concentrations (K, Li, Rb, Cs, REE) and isotope ratios (δ7Li, δ11B, 87Sr/86Sr) suggest fluid-rock interactions under rock-dominated conditions at all three vent sites. The South Central vents lie closest to the site of most recent volcanic activity in the Niuatahi caldera. Vent fluids are characterized by relatively low Cl concentrations (as low as 292 mmol/kg) that are indicative of sub-critical phase separation. These fluids also had the lowest pH values (2.8–3.1), highest H 2 S and lowest H 2 , CH 4 and CO 2 concentrations of the three sites. The δD and δ18O values suggest that H 2 O and CO 2 were added in small amounts by subduction-related volcanic vapors. However, there was no evidence for magmatic SO 2 input in the vent fluids at the time of sampling in 2018. Vent fluids from the Northern and Southwestern Cone sites on the caldera ring fault had a similar chemical composition, despite being situated at opposite sides of the caldera. Fluids from these sites had lower Fe/Mn ratios (<1) and H 2 S concentrations than those from South Central suggesting that they were affected by subsurface cooling and sulfide precipitation. This study indicates variations of the Niuatahi hydrothermal vent sites depending on the location within the caldera with variable effects of fluid-rock interaction and magmatic input on fluid compositions in agreement with previous work on fluid S isotopes and sulfides. Abstract Taupō volcano, New Zealand, is a large caldera volcano that has been highly active through the Holocene. It most recently erupted ∼1,800 years ago but there have been multiple periods of historic volcanic unrest. We use seismological and geodetic analysis to show that in 2019 Taupō underwent a period of unrest characterized by increased seismic activity through multiple swarms and was accompanied by ground deformation within the caldera. The earthquakes, which include non‐double‐couple events, serve to outline an aseismic zone beneath the most recent eruptive vents. This aseismic zone is coincident with an inflating source, based on forward modeling of ground deformation data. We infer that this aseismic and deforming region delineates the location of the present day magma reservoir that is ≥250 km3 in volume and has a melt fraction of >20%–30%, inhibiting seismic activity. Our analysis shows that the 2019 unrest at Taupō was volcanic in nature and origin, demonstrating that this is an active and potentially hazardous volcano, and that improving our monitoring and understanding of its behavior is important.

A probabilistic hazard analysis of tsunami generated by subaqueous volcanic explosion is applied to the Campi Flegrei caldera (Campania, Italy). An event tree is developed to quantify the tsunami hazard due to the submarine explosions by: i) defining potential size classes of explosion magnitude on the basis of past volcanic activity in the Campi Flegrei caldera and sites in the underwater part of the caldera; ii) simulating the generation and propagation of the consequent tsunami waves able to reach the coasts of the Campania region for all combinations of tsunami-generating vents and sizes; and iii) quantifying the tsunami probability and relative uncertainty, conditional upon the occurrence of an underwater eruption at Campi Flegrei. Tsunami hazard generated by subaqueous volcanic explosions is considered crucial because of its potential high impact on the densely populated coastal areas of the Pozzuoli Bay and Gulf of Naples even if the probability for eruptions in the submarine part of the caldera is certainly low. The tsunami hazard analysis is presented using conditional hazard curves and maps, that is calculating the probability (and relative uncertainties) of exceeding given tsunami intensity thresholds (wave amplitudes at the coast), given the occurrence of a subaqueous eruption. The results indicate that a significant tsunami hazard exists in many areas of the Bay of Naples. • Subaqueous volcanic explosions can generate tsunamis. • The Campi Flegrei caldera is used as a case-study for applying a probabilistic hazard analysis of tsunami generated by subaqueous. • The results show that this kind of scenario represents a significant hazard in the Pozzuoli Bay and Gulf of Naples. The late-seventeenth century BC Minoan eruption of Santorini discharged 30-60 km of magma, and caldera collapse deepened and widened the existing 22 ka caldera. A study of juvenile, cognate, and accidental components in the eruption products provides new constraints on vent development during the five eruptive phases, and on the processes that initiated the eruption. The eruption began with subplinian (phase 0) and plinian (phase 1) phases from a vent on a NE-SW fault line that bisects the volcanic field. During phase 1, the magma fragmentation level dropped from the surface to the level of subvolcanic basement and magmatic intrusions. The fragmentation level shallowed again, and the vent migrated northwards (during phase 2) into the flooded 22 ka caldera. The eruption then became strongly phreatomagmatic and discharged low-temperature ignimbrite containing abundant fragments of post-22 ka, pre-Minoan intracaldera lavas (phase 3). Phase 4 discharged hot, fluidized pyroclastic flows from subaerial vents and constructed three main ignimbrite fans (northwestern, eastern, and southern) around the volcano. The first phase-4 flows were discharged from a vent, or vents, in the northern half of the volcanic field, and laid down lithic-block-rich ignimbrite and lag breccias across much of the NW fan. About a tenth of the lithic debris in these flows was subvolcanic basement. New subaerial vents then opened up, probably across much of the volcanic field, and finer-grained ignimbrite was discharged to form the E and S fans. If major caldera collapse took place during the eruption, it probably occurred during phase 4. Three juvenile components were discharged during the eruption-a volumetrically dominant rhyodacitic pumice and two andesitic components: microphenocryst-rich andesitic pumices and quenched andesitic enclaves. The microphenocryst-rich pumices form a textural, mineralogical, chemical, and thermal continuum with co-erupted hornblende diorite nodules, and together they are interpreted as the contents of a small, variably crystallized intrusion that was fragmented and discharged during the eruption, mostly during phases 0 and 1. The microphenocryst-rich pumices, hornblende diorite, andesitic enclaves, and fragments of pre-Minoan intracaldera andesitic lava together form a chemically distinct suite of Ba-rich, Zr-poor andesites that is unique in the products of Santorini since 530 ka. Once the Minoan magma reservoir was primed for eruption by recharge-generated pressurization, the rhyodacite moved upwards by exploiting the plane of weakness offered by the pre-existing andesite-diorite intrusion, dragging some of the crystal-rich contents of the intrusion with it. In a series of analogue experiments, we analysed the formation and propagation of caldera ring-faults with the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method.
