In this report, the results of data recovery efforts conducted for the Palo Verde to Pinal West transmission line project at the Gillespie Dam site, AZ T:13:18 (ASM), in the Gila Bend area of the Gila River are presented. The site is a prehistoric Hohokam-Patayan settlement with an overlay of Historic era material. Fieldwork primarily occurred within the construction staging area of a transmission tower. Although covering less than an acre, the staging area contained surprising numbers of prehistoric features, including numerous pithouses, a cobble-buttressed adobe structure, ramadas, a storehouse/granary, and myriad other feature types typical of the range of outdoor activities that would be associated with a residential locus in a Hohokam village. Chronological evidence indicates the locus was occupied from the beginning of the Sedentary period, well into the Classic period, or from the tenth century to sometime after the thirteenth century A.D. Three of the pithouses are among the largest ever excavated within the Hohokam cultural area; the adobe structure was also exceptionally large. The large structures formed a corridor through the center of the staging area, which was accentuated by a fronting, prepared caliche surface. It is these structures that are the essential project finding, providing important insights about village organization and activity at the Gillespie Dam site. In turn, the project results inform on larger prehistoric events occurring within the Gila Bend area. Fieldwork also included sampling of a historic canal, AZ T:14:143 (ASM), which skirts the edge of the river terrace scarp in the southwestern portion of the Gillespie Dam site. Archival research identified this channel as the Wolfley, or original, Gila Bend Canal. It was the first of several historic canals built on the eastern side of the Gila River north of Gila Bend. The Wolfley/Gila Bend canal operated intermittently between 1892 and 1895, and possibly as late as 1905. The study of the canal during this project provided a rare opportunity to compare the archaeological record of a canal with its documented history of constructions, management, and natural events. Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) has completed archaeological extent testing for the Sojourner Center within approximately 1.1 acres of 3.6 acres planned for development of a women's center for victims of domestic abuse. This property falls within the boundary of La Ciudad, AZ T:12:1(ASM), a large Hohokam village determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in 2003. The City of Phoenix (COP) Archaeologist recommended that subsurface testing be conducted within the property to determine the location and extent of buried archaeological resources associated with La Ciudad that might be present. Northland conducted mechanical trenching at the Sojourner Center property, which resulted in the identification of a prehistoric pit house and a historic/modern nonthermal pit feature. The following report describes the methods and results of testing, and presents recommendations for additional research.

Data recovery was completed at Pueblo del Rio as specified in the work plan developed after the testing phase. The purpose of the data recovery was to recover sufficient information from the portion of Pueblo del Rio within the EPNG right-of-way to answer general research questions as outlined in the treatment plan and to mitigate the adverse effect of the proposed EPNG undertaking on the cultural resources within the right-of-way. These goals were accomplished. However, the highly disturbed nature of the deposits made interpretation of the investigated features difficult. Additionally, the spatial limits of the project area within the narrow EPNG right-of-way precluded site-wide generalizations.

Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) has conducted a cultural resources assessment of the Washington Park property for ANF Property Holdings, Inc. The property consists of a 25.2 acre lot located on the northeast comer in Phoenix, Arizona. The lot includes a portion of the Pueblo Grande archaeological site (AZ U:9:7[ASM]). The purpose of the Northland investigations was to provide an assessment of site preservation within the Washington Park property and to estimate the types and densities of existing archaeological remains. To accomplish these goals, Northland implemented a systematic, random sample of the project area using backhoe trenches. A statistical model was used to extrapolate archaeological feature density in the parcel. These efforts revealed that significant archaeological remains were concentrated in three areas of the site, designated the South (ca. 750-1550 features), Northwest (ca. 770-1,130 features), and Northeast (ca. 140-270 features) loci. A large area in the central portion of the property was essentially devoid of features.
