1. The Use of a Length and Measurement HLT by Pre-Service Kindergarten Teachers' to Notice Children's Mathematical Thinking

Abstract

The objective of the study was to characterise how pre-service kindergarten teachers used a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory on length and its measurement to notice children's mathematical thinking. A total of 64 pre-service kindergarten teachers enrolled in an Early Years Education mathematics teaching course were asked to notice teaching situations focusing on kindergarten children's learning of length. On the one hand, three profiles of pre-service kindergarten teachers were found according to the use they made of the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory. These profiles were characterised by three ways of learning to use the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory based on the type of mathematical elements they identified: only mathematical elements related to the magnitude; only mathematical elements related to the measurement of length; or both magnitude and measurement elements. On the other hand, when considering the three skills of professional noticing, by identifying the mathematical elements required to solve the proposed task, a group of pre-service kindergarten teachers within each profile were able to notice the thinking of these elements by children and to suggest activities. Our findings provide learning opportunities to pre-service kindergarten teachers who use a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory. It provides them with 'check-points' to answer the proposed questions, in order to learn the specialised knowledge for teaching length and its measurement as well as to develop the skill of noticing student's mathematical thinking.

Abstract

We report on the operation of a coherent population trapping (CPT) microcell atomic clock using a pulsed Ramsey-like interrogation. The Ramsey-CPT sequence, defined by two-step optical pulses separated by a free-evolution dark time, is produced by switching on and off the output power of a low-power vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, through direct modulation of its driving current. High-contrast and narrow Ramsey-CPT fringes are detected without the use of any external optical modulator stage. We demonstrate closed-loop operation of the clock based on high-speed digital signal processing implemented in a field programmable gate array board. The clock's short-term fractional frequency stability is 1.3 × 10−10 τ − 1 / 2 until 2000 s. A power light-shift coefficient of 8 × 10−11/μW, in relative value, is obtained for a dark time of 150 μs. This value is about ten times lower than in the continuous regime. These results show the feasibility of fully integrated atomic clocks based on Ramsey spectroscopy, which could provide enhanced long-term stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: Within the Solve-RD project (https://solve-rd.eu/), the European Reference Network for Intellectual disability, TeleHealth, Autism and Congenital Anomalies aimed to investigate whether a reanalysis of exomes from unsolved cases based on ClinVar annotations could establish additional diagnoses. We present the results of the "ClinVar low-hanging fruit" reanalysis, reasons for the failure of previous analyses, and lessons learned. Methods: Data from the first 3576 exomes (1522 probands and 2054 relatives) collected from European Reference Network for Intellectual disability, TeleHealth, Autism and Congenital Anomalies was reanalyzed by the Solve-RD consortium by evaluating for the presence of single-nucleotide variant, and small insertions and deletions already reported as (likely) pathogenic in ClinVar. Variants were filtered according to frequency, genotype, and mode of inheritance and reinterpreted. Results: We identified causal variants in 59 cases (3.9%), 50 of them also raised by other approaches and 9 leading to new diagnoses, highlighting interpretation challenges: variants in genes not known to be involved in human disease at the time of the first analysis, misleading genotypes, or variants undetected by local pipelines (variants in off-target regions, low quality filters, low allelic balance, or high frequency). Conclusion: The "ClinVar low-hanging fruit" analysis represents an effective, fast, and easy approach to recover causal variants from exome sequencing data, herewith contributing to the reduction of the diagnostic deadlock. Contains fulltext : 237905.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), Reanalysis of inconclusive exome/genome sequencing data increases the diagnosis yield of patients with rare diseases. However, the cost and efforts required for reanalysis prevent its routine implementation in research and clinical environments. The Solve-RD project aims to reveal the molecular causes underlying undiagnosed rare diseases. One of the goals is to implement innovative approaches to reanalyse the exomes and genomes from thousands of well-studied undiagnosed cases. The raw genomic data is submitted to Solve-RD through the RD-Connect Genome-Phenome Analysis Platform (GPAP) together with standardised phenotypic and pedigree data. We have developed a programmatic workflow to reanalyse genome-phenome data. It uses the RD-Connect GPAP's Application Programming Interface (API) and relies on the big-data technologies upon which the system is built. We have applied the workflow to prioritise rare known pathogenic variants from 4411 undiagnosed cases. The queries returned an average of 1.45 variants per case, which first were evaluated in bulk by a panel of disease experts and afterwards specifically by the submitter of each case. A total of 120 index cases (21.2% of prioritised cases, 2.7% of all exome/genome-negative samples) have already been solved, with others being under investigation. The implementation of solutions as the one described here provide the technical framework to enable periodic case-level data re-evaluation in clinical settings, as recommended by the American College of Medical Genetics.

Abstract

Introduction Current treatment with vasodilators for pulmonary hypertension associated with respiratory diseases is limited by their inhibitory effect on hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) and uncoupling effects on ventilation-perfusion (V'/Q'). Hypoxia is also a well-known modulator of the nitric oxide (NO) pathway, and may therefore differentially affect the responses to phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors and soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) stimulators. So far, the effects of the sGC stimulator riociguat on HPV have been poorly characterized. Materials and methods Contraction was recorded in pulmonary arteries (PA) in a wire myograph. Anesthetized rats were catheterized to record PA pressure. Ventilation and perfusion were analyzed by microCT- SPECT images in rats with pulmonary fibrosis induced by bleomycin. Results U The PDE5 inhibitor sildenafil and the sGC stimulator riociguat similarly inhibited HPV in vitro and in vivo. Riociguat was more effective as vasodilator in isolated rat and human PA than sildenafil. Riociguat was approximate to 3-fold more potent under hypoxic conditions and it markedly inhibited HPV in vivo at a dose that barely affected the thromboxane A(2) (TXA(2)) mimetic U46619-induced pressor responses. Pulmonary fibrosis was associated with V'/Q' uncoupling and riociguat did not affect the V'/Q' ratio. Conclusion PDE5 inhibitors and sGC stimulators show a different vasodilator profile. Riociguat was highly effective and potentiated by hypoxia in rat and human PA. In vivo, riociguat preferentially inhibited hypoxic than non-hypoxic vasoconstriction. However, it did not worsen V'/Q' coupling in a rat model of pulmonary fibrosis.

Abstract

In this contribution we compile and summarize the available paleo-environmental lacustrine data for the last 20,000 years from the southern Central Pyrenees (from west to east: El Portalet, Tramacastilla, Basa de la Mora, Estanya, Redon, Montcortès and Marcelino lakes) and present a new sequence from mid altitude (Holocene record of Lake Estanya). Multiproxy analyses of lake records have identified large vegetation and hydrological changes during last glacial, deglaciation and the Holocene periods at millennial, centennial and even decadal scales and documented their timing, intensity and varied nature. The review indicates that landscape dynamics in the Pyrenees have been greatly controlled by both long term and abrupt climate changes and, since the Middle Holocene, and particularly since Medieval times, by human activities as new transforming agent. Although high internal variability characterized every site, common temporal trends are evidenced, as well as a suggestive western–eastern gradient superimposed to the expected altitudinal one (highlands versus lowlands). Abstract

This chapter provides a historical review of the evolution of immigration and integration policies in Europe from 1973 up to now. It reconstructs the different challenges that migration flows have posed to European countries over the years and the policymaking responses developed accordingly. The chapter distinguishes three European migratory regimes: (i) North-Western Europe; (ii) Southern Europe; (iii) and Central and Eastern Europe. The diversity of migration policies adopted in each of these migratory systems is explained in relation to their geographical location, economic context, political history, and also notions of nationhood, national belonging and organization of government. Also integration policies are discussed, with the overall aim to clarify how the concept of integration has been used in policy formulation and policy practice in Europe. Furthermore, the chapter analyses the developments towards creation of a comprehensive European migration and asylum regime. Policymaking at the EU level has supplemented and sometimes challenged national policymaking in two main ways. First, the EU may subsidize local integration initiatives that would otherwise remain unfunded (e.g., by national governments). Second, EU mandates may limit objectives established at the national level that are at odds with EU law (e.g., restricting nations’ power to restrict the rights of third-country nationals). The main conclusion is that a convergence of migration and integration regimes in Europe is in clear evidence.

Abstract

[EN] El Cañizar de Villarquemado sequence (North-eastern Iberian Peninsula) stands as an exceptional palaeoenvironmental record for the last 130 000 years. The preliminary multidisciplinary study carried out so far include pollen and sedimentological analyses, comprising geochemical, X ray fluorescence (XRF), mineralogical, organic and inorganic content (TOC/TIC) analyses. The chronological model has been established combining AMS 14C on the first 20 m of sediment and OSL methods on the remaining 54 m to the bottom. The sedimentary sequence is essentially formed by alternating facies of peatbogs and wetlands with those of distal alluvial fan deposits and others of carbonate lake. The results currently obtained support relatively humid conditions at El Cañizar de Villarquemado during a likely MIS6-MIS5 period, as errors linked to the age model prevent us to guarantee precisely the period boundaries. Despite indications of humidity, the regional vegetation variations during the MIS6-MIS5 period, essentially represented by Juniperus, were constrained by the intense continentality of the area, resulting in unexpected pollen assemblages for an interglacial period as the Eemian. The most arid phase of the sequence is registered during the MIS3, as shown by the available sedimentological and palynological results, while the MIS2 presents greater local and regional variability as proved by the sedimentary facies and aquatics and the other pollen spectra, respectively. The Holocene presents an abrupt onset regarding palaeohydrology while terrestrial vegetation, dominated by pine instead than Juniperus as in the sequence's bottom, show a resilient response as these are well adapted communities to extreme continentality. The later development of both, evergreen and marcescent Quercus, together with the presence of pine woodland, indicate very different climatic conditions between the MIS5 and MIS1 interglacial periods. © Universidad de La Rioja., [ES] La secuencia de El Cañizar de Villarquemado (NE Península Ibérica) constituye un registro excepcional que cubre los últimos ca. 130 000 años de historia ambiental. Los análisis multidisciplinares que se han realizado hasta el momento incluyen un análisis palinológico preliminar y otros indicadores sedimentológicos, como susceptibilidad magnética, análisis geoquímicos de fluorescencia de rayos X (XRF), mineralogía y contenido en carbono orgánico e inorgánico (TOC/TIC). El modelo cronológico se ha realizado combinando dataciones AMS 14C en los 20 m superiores de sedimento y OSL (Luminiscencia Óptica Estimulada) en los 54 m restantes. La secuencia sedimentaria está esencialmente formada por la alternancia de fases con mayor desarrollo de humedales y turberas, con otras de depósitos distales de abanicos aluviales y episodios de lago carbonatado. Los resultados obtenidos hasta el momento confirman que el registro del Cañizar de Villarquemado responde a unas condiciones relativamente húmedas durante un probable MIS6-MIS5, con variaciones en la vegetación regional (esencialmente dominada por Juniperus) que aparecen siempre muy determinadas por la continentalidad de la zona, y que resultan atípicas para lo esperable durante un episodio interglacial como el Eemiense. De todos modos, los márgenes de error adscritos al modelo de edad impiden ciertas precisiones y aseveraciones al respecto. Durante el MIS3 se registra el periodo más árido de toda la secuencia, como confirman los resultados sedimentológicos y los polínicos de algunos intervalos ya disponibles. Sin embargo el MIS2 presenta una gran variabilidad tanto a nivel local, como indican las distintas asociaciones de facies y la vegetación acuática, como a nivel regional, como se deduce de la cubierta vegetal general. El comienzo del Holoceno se registra de manera muy abrupta en cuanto a cambios paleohidrológicos, pero mostrando de nuevo cierta resiliencia de la vegetación, dominada esta vez por pinos y no por Juniperus como en la base de la secuencia, y muy adaptada a las condiciones de extrema continentalidad. Bruquetas Callejo vergeleek de situatie in Nederland (Rotterdam) en Spanje (Barcelona), twee landen die sterk verschillen op het gebied van nationaal integratiebeleid, onderwijssysteem en specifieke opvangprogramma’s. Ze laat zien dat er in beide gevallen een policy gap bestaat: de scholen in beide landen hebben opvangpraktijken die afwijken van het officiële integratiebeleid en van de opvangprogramma’s. In Barcelona is de kloof groter; men reageert vooral op de onmiddellijke pragmatische eisen van de situatie. In Rotterdam voldoen schoolpraktijken in het algemeen wel aan het ontvangstprogramma, maar maken scholen van eigen bevoegdheden gebruik om onderwijskansen van leerlingen te verbeteren. Bruquetas Callejo toont de relevantie van de lokale praktijk voor de beleidsuitvoering. Institutionele regelingen beïnvloeden de praktijk in verschillende mate in verschillende lokale omstandigheden; het is dan ook belangrijk te onderzoeken welke contextuele elementen de naleving of de niet-naleving ondersteunen.

Abstract

En los últimos años, ha aparecido el concepto de Agricultura de Precisión, gracias al desarrollo de las nuevas tecnologías. Esto ha hecho que los problemas surgidos con las prácticas agrícolas tradicionales, tal es el caso de la utilización de herbicidas o el abonado generalizado, se vayan solventando conforme avanzan las investigaciones. En la Agricultura de Precisión se hace especial hincapié en las técnicas orientadas a la aplicación selectiva de tratamientos, es decir, al uso de herbicidas y otros productos químicos sólo en aquellas zonas en las que sea necesario. En esta investigación nuestro objetivo consiste en la identificación de forma automática de las diferentes texturas que aparecen en imágenes procedentes de campos de cultivo, concretamente de cereal y maíz. Por lo tanto, en nuestro trabajo, por un lado se identifica la parte vegetal mediante la fusión de cuatro imágenes obtenidas a partir de lo que técnicamente se conocen como índices cromáticos. Por otro lado se separan tanto la parte del suelo como del cielo, en este último caso cuando proceda, mediante el diseño de una estrategia también basada en índices de cromaticidad. Finalmente, las texturas identificadas como de vegetación o suelo se someten a un proceso de clasificación basado en el clasificador borroso con el fin de distinguir las diferentes tonalidades, que permiten discriminar diferentes tipos de vegetación y de suelo. [ABSTRACT] In recent years has emerged the concept of Precision Agriculture, by developing new technologies. This has made the problems encountered with traditional farming practices, such is the case for the use of herbicides or fertilizer widespread as they move will be by solving the research. In Precision Agriculture with special emphasis on techniques aimed at the selective application of reatments, i.e. the use of herbicides and other chemicals products only in those areas where necessary. In this research, the objective consists in the automatic identification of the different textures that appear in images from crop fields, particularly cereal and corn. Therefore, in our work, first we identify the plants by fusing four images obtained from what is technically known as chromatic indices. On the other hand, textures belonging to the soil and the sky are also separated based on the application of chromaticity. Finally, once the vegetation and the soil textures are identified, through a fuzzy clustering approach still is possible a classification for distinguishing different kinds of vegetation and soil, including shades.

Item does not contain fulltext, Ancient genomic sequences have started to reveal the origin and the demographic impact of farmers from the Neolithic period spreading into Europe. The adoption of farming, stock breeding and sedentary societies during the Neolithic may have resulted in adaptive changes in genes associated with immunity and diet. However, the limited data available from earlier hunter-gatherers preclude an understanding of the selective processes associated with this crucial transition to agriculture in recent human evolution. Here we sequence an approximately 7,000-year-old Mesolithic skeleton discovered at the La Brana-Arintero site in Leon, Spain, to retrieve a complete pre-agricultural European human genome. Analysis of this genome in the context of other ancient samples suggests the existence of a common ancient genomic signature across western and central Eurasia from the Upper Paleolithic to the Mesolithic. The La Brana individual carries ancestral alleles in several skin pigmentation genes, suggesting that the light skin of modern Europeans was not yet ubiquitous in Mesolithic times. Moreover, we provide evidence that a significant number of derived, putatively adaptive variants associated with pathogen resistance in modern Europeans were already present in this hunter-gatherer.

41. Los municipios grandes y medianos como actores clave de las políticas de integración en los Países Bajos

Abstract

La política de integración neerlandesa ha pasado por diversas etapas caracterizadas no sólo por la variación en sus contenidos sino también en sus pautas específicas de gobernanza, en las que distintos actores han sido clave. El análisis de las pautas de gobernanza a escala nacional muestra que las políticas han evolucionado desde un elevado grado de centralización en los años ochenta hasta un proceso gradual de descentralización en los años noventa para finalmente regresar hacia la tendencia inicial a la centralización. Dicha interpretación del proceso favorece la atención sobre la arena nacional y sobre la dimensión discursiva y retórica de las políticas. Sin embargo, si abordamos el análisis desde el punto de vista de la práctica y del ámbito local, vemos que el cambio de milenio no ha acusado una recentralización sino más bien al contrario, una exacerbación de la tendencia descentralizadora progresiva. El énfasis en las prácticas políticas reales nos lleva a afirmar que los municipios holandeses no sólo han sido sino que continúan siendo uno de los actores clave de las políticas de integración. En el presente trabajo intentamos ofrecer un análisis de las políticas actuales de integración en los Países Bajos desde el punto de vista de las ciudades grandes y medianas. El objetivo es responder a la cuestión de si podemos afirmar que existe en la actualidad una re-centralización de las políticas o, por el contrario, la evidencia empírica apunta en la dirección opuesta. Intentamos responder a tres preguntas básicas: a) ¿Hasta qué punto son los municipios actores centrales en la política de integración en los Países Bajos; b) ¿En qué medida y cómo ejercen los municipios esta potencialidad?; y c) ¿Cuáles son los factores cruciales para explicar la variación entre ciudades? Utilizando material empírico de un estudio de caso de la política local de integración en la ciudad de Rótterdam, junto con documentación y datos secundarios de otras investigaciones comparativas de las 30 ciudades neerlandesas de tamaño grande y medio, intentaremos analizar la actuación en materia de integración de los municipios neerlandeses centrándonos en el periodo 2002-2006.

Abstract

EuQoS is the acronym for “end-to-end quality of service support over heterogeneous networks,”which is a European research project aimed at building an entire QoS framework,addressing all the relevant network layers, protocols, and technologies. This framework, which includes the most common access networks (xDSL, UMTS, WiFi, and LAN) is being prototyped and tested in a multidomain scenario throughout Europe, composing what we call the EuQoS system. In this article we present the novel QoS routing mechanisms that are being developed and evaluated in the framework of this project. The preliminary performance results validate the design choices of the EuQoS system, and confirm the potential impact this project is likely to have in the near future.

Abstract

La secuencia de El Cañizar de Villarquemado (NE Península Ibérica) constituye un registro excepcional que cubre los últimos ca. 130 000 años de historia ambiental. Los análisis multidisciplinares que se han realizado hasta el momento incluyen un análisis palinológico preliminar y otros indicadores sedimentológicos, como susceptibilidad magnética, análisis geoquímicos de fluorescencia de rayos X (XRF), mineralogía y contenido en carbono orgánico e inorgánico (TOC/TIC). El modelo cronológico se ha realizado combinando dataciones AMS 14C en los 20 m superiores de sedimento y OSL (Luminiscencia Óptica Estimulada) en los 54 m restantes. La secuencia sedimentaria está esencialmente formada por la alternancia de fases con mayor desarrollo de humedales y turberas, con otras de depósitos distales de abanicos aluviales y episodios de lago carbonatado. Los resultados obtenidos hasta el momento confirman que el registro del Cañizar de Villarquemado responde a unas condiciones relativamente húmedas durante un probable MIS6-MIS5, con variaciones en la vegetación regional (esencialmente dominada por Juniperus) que aparecen siempre muy determinadas por la continentalidad de la zona, y que resultan atípicas para lo esperable durante un episodio interglacial como el Eemiense. De todos modos, los márgenes de error adscritos al modelo de edad impiden ciertas precisiones y aseveraciones al respecto. Durante el MIS3 se registra el periodo más árido de toda la secuencia, como confirman los resultados sedimentológicos y los polínicos de algunos intervalos ya disponibles. Sin embargo el MIS2 presenta una gran variabilidad tanto a nivel local, como indican las distintas asociaciones de facies y la vegetación acuática, como a nivel regional, como se deduce de la cubierta vegetal general. El comienzo del Holoceno se registra de manera muy abrupta en cuanto a cambios paleohidrológicos, pero mostrando de nuevo cierta resiliencia de la vegetación, dominada esta vez por pinos y no por Juniperus co, El Cañizar de Villarquemado sequence (North-eastern Iberian Peninsula) stands as an exceptional palaeoenvironmental record for the last 130 000 years. The preliminary multidisciplinary study carried out so far include pollen and sedimentological analyses, comprising geochemical, X ray fluorescence (XRF), mineralogical, organic and inorganic content (TOC/TIC) analyses. The chronological model has been established combining AMS 14C on the first 20 m of sediment and OSL methods on the remaining 54 m to the bottom. The sedimentary sequence is essentially formed by alternating facies of peatbogs and wetlands with those of distal alluvial fan deposits and others of carbonate lake. The results currently obtained support relatively humid conditions at El Cañizar de Villarquemado during a likely MIS6-MIS5 period, as errors linked to the age model prevent us to guarantee precisely the period boundaries. Despite indications of humidity, the regional vegetation variations during the MIS6-MIS5 period, essentially represented by Juniperus, were constrained by the intense continentality of the area, resulting in unexpected pollen assemblages for an interglacial period as the Eemian. The most arid phase of the sequence is registered during the MIS3, as shown by the available sedimentological and palynological results, while the MIS2 presents greater local and regional variability as proved by the sedimentary facies and aquatics and the other pollen spectra, respectively. The Holocene presents an abrupt onset regarding palaeohydrology while terrestrial vegetation, dominated by pine instead than Juniperus as in the sequence's bottom, show a resilient response as these are well adapted communities to extreme continentality. Abstract

High resolution multiproxy data (pollen, sedimentology, geochemistry, chironomids and charcoal) from the Basa de la Mora (BSM) lake sequence (42° 32′ N, 0° 19′ E, 1914 m a.s.l.) show marked climate variability in the central southern Pyrenees throughout the Holocene. A robust age model based on 15 AMS radiocarbon dates underpins the first precise reconstruction of rapid climate changes during the Holocene from this area. During the Early Holocene, increased winter snowpack and high snowmelt during summer, as a consequence of high seasonality, led to higher lake levels, a chironomid community dominated by non-lacustrine taxa (Orthocladiinae) related to higher inlet streams, and a forested landscape with intense run-off processes in the watershed. From 9.8 to 8.1 cal ka BP, climate instability is inferred from rapid and intense forest shifts and high fluctuation in surface run-off. Shifts among conifers and mesophytes reveal at least four short-lived dry events at 9.7, 9.3, 8.8 and 8.3 cal ka BP. Between 8.1 and 5.7 cal ka BP a stable climate with higher precipitation favoured highest lake levels and forest expansion, with spread of mesophytes, withdrawal of conifers and intensification of fires, coinciding with the Holocene Climate Optimum. At 5.7 cal ka BP a major change leading to drier conditions contributed to a regional decline in mesophytes, expansion of pines and junipers, and a significant lake level drop. Despite drier conditions, fire activity dropped as consequence of biomass reduction. Two arid intervals occurred between 2.9 and 2.4 cal ka BP and at 1.2–0.7 cal ka BP (800–1300 AD). The latter coincides with the Medieval Climate Anomaly and is one of the most arid phases of the Holocene in BSM sequence. Anthropogenic disturbances were small until 700 AD, when human pressure over landscape intensified, with Olea cultivation in the lowlands and significant deforestation in highlands. Abstract

Two yeasts from the effluent of a uranium mineral heap were identified as Candida sorbophila and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa. They are well adapted to such an environment as shown by their tolerance to metals and acid pH. However, different mechanisms could be involved in the adaptation: C. sorbophila could be considered to be more acid-tolerant as a function of its specific growth rate and respiratory behavior at acidic pH in an organic medium. However, R. mucilaginosa was capable of growing by 1 log unit when inoculated in a sterilized leaching effluent or in a ferrous mineral medium, without added organic compounds. Indeed, the ability of R. mucilaginosa to grow in a low-nutrient environment could be as important a factor as its acid tolerance for coping in the isolation habitat. In mixed cultures with sulfide-oxidizing bacteria, no effect was observed on the ferrous oxidation normally carried out by these bacteria.
