The impact of noise sources in real-world implementations of Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution (TF-QKD) protocols is investigated, focusing on phase noise from photon sources and connecting fibers. This work emphasizes the role of laser quality, network topology, fiber length, arm balance, and detector performance in determining key rates. Remarkably, it reveals that the leading TF-QKD protocols are similarly affected by phase noise despite different mechanisms. This study demonstrates duty cycle improvements of over a factor of two through narrow-linewidth lasers and phase-control techniques, highlighting the potential synergy with high-precision time/frequency distribution services. Ultrastable lasers, evolving toward integration and miniaturization, offer promise for agile TF-QKD implementations on existing networks. Laser interferometry enables to remotely measure microscopical length changes of deployed telecommunication cables originating from earthquakes. Long range and compatibility with data traffic make it unique to the exploration of remote regions, as well as highly-populated areas where optical networks are pervasive, and its large-scale implementation is attractive for both Earth scientists and telecom operators. However, validation and modeling of its response and sensitivity are still at an early stage and suffer from lack of statistically-significant event catalogs and limited availability of co-located seismometers. We implemented laser interferometry on a land-based telecommunication cable and analyzed 1.5 years of continuous acquisition, with successful detections of events in a broad range of magnitudes, including very weak ones. By comparing fiber and seismometer recordings we determined relations between a cable's detection probability and the magnitude and distance of events, and showed that spectral analysis of recorded data allows considerations on the earthquake dynamics. Our results reveal that quantitative analysis is possible for this sensing technique and support the interpretation of data from the growing amount of interferometric deployments. We anticipate the high integration and scalability of laser interferometry into existing telecommunication grids to be useful for the daily seismicity monitoring, in perspective exploitable for civilian protection use.

Digital signal processing (DSP) is supporting novel in-field applications of optical interferometry, such as in laser ranging and distributed acoustic sensing. While the highest performances are achieved with field-programmable gated arrays (FPGAs), their complexity and cost are often too high for many tasks. Here, we describe an alternative solution for processing optical signals in real-time, based on a dual-core 32-bit microcontroller. We implemented in-phase and quadrature (IQ) demodulation of optical beat-notes resulting from the interference of independent laser sources, phase noise analysis of deployed optical fibers covering intercity distances, and synchronization of remote acquisitions via optical trigger signals. The embedded architecture can efficiently accomplish a large variety of tasks in the context of optical signal processing, being also easily configurable, compact, and upgradable. These features make it attractive for applications that require long-term, remotely operated, and field-deployed instrumentation.

We present the new absolute frequency measurement of ytterbium (171Yb) obtained at INRiM with the optical lattice clock IT-Yb1 against the cryogenic caesium (133Cs) fountain IT-CsF2, evaluated through a measurement campaign that lasted 14 months. Measurements are performed by either using a hydrogen maser as a transfer oscillator or by synthesizing a low-noise microwave for Cs interrogation using an optical frequency comb. The frequency of the 171Yb unperturbed clock transition 1S0 - 3P0 results to be 518 295 836 590 863.44(14) Hz, with a total fractional uncertainty of 2.7e-16 that is limited by the uncertainty of IT-CsF2. Our measurement is in agreement with the Yb frequency recommended by the Consultative Committee for Time and Frequency (CCTF). This result confirms the reliability of Yb as a secondary representation of the second and is relevant to the process of redefining the second in the International System of Units (SI) on an optical transition

Optical clock comparison via optical fibre links has been achieved over continental scales, but has not yet been demonstrated intercontinentally. The transfer of ultra-stable optical frequencies over transoceanic distances is a challenging task, as the seafloor cable architecture prevents the use of environmental noise suppression techniques currently employed on land-based metrological links. As a fundamental first step towards devising suitable frequency transfer techniques to enable future clock comparison on a global scale, here we show the free-running frequency stability and phase noise measurements of a transatlantic seafloor optical link between the UK and Canada. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first ever measurements of an intercontinental optical fibre link.

The advent of optical frequency standards with ultimate uncertainties in the low 1x10$^{-18}$ requires femtosecond frequency combs to support a similar level of resolution in the spectral transfer and the computation of optical frequency ratios. The related experimental challenges grow together with the number of optical frequencies to be measured simultaneously, as in many cases the comb's optical power does not allow reliable beatnote counting or tracking in all the spectral regions of interest. Here we describe the use of a track-and-hold amplifier to implement the gated detection, a previously proposed technique for improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the beatnote between a low-power tooth of the frequency comb and a continuous wave laser. We demonstrate a 12dB improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of beatnotes involving a broadband-spanning optical comb as compared to traditional detection schemes. Our approach enables reliable and cycle-slip-free spectral purity transfer and reduces the system sensitivity to power drops in the comb spectrum. Being based on a single chip, it is robust, versatile and easily embedded in more complex experimental schemes. We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. We report on the realization of a new compact strontium optical clock using a 2-D magneto-optical-trap (2D-MOT) as cold atomic source and a multi-wavelength cavity as the frequency stabilization system. All needed optical frequencies are stabilized to a zero-thermal expansion high-finesse optical resonator and can be operated without frequency adjustments for weeks. We present the complete characterization of the apparatus. Optical control of the atomic source allows us to perform low-noise clock operation without atomic signal normalization. Long- and short-term stability tests of the clock have been performed for the 88 Sr bosonic isotope by means of interleaved clock operation. Finally, we present the first preliminary accuracy budget of the system.

Quantum key distribution (QKD), the distribution of quantum secured keys useful for data encryption, is expected to have a crucial impact in the next decades. However, although the notable achievements accomplished in the last twenty years, many practical and serious challenges are limiting the full deployment of this novel quantum technology in the current telecommunication infrastructures. In particular, the co-propagation of quantum signals and high-speed data traffic within the same optical fiber, is not completely resolved, due to the intrinsic noise caused by the high intensity of the classical signals. As a consequence, current co-propagation schemes limit the amount of classical optical power in order to reduce the overall link noise. However, this ad-hoc solution restrains the overall range of possibilities for a large-scale QKD deployment. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new method, based on up-conversion assisted receiver, for co-propagating classical light and QKD signals. In addition, we compare the performances of this scheme with an off-the-shelf quantum receiver, equipped with a standard InGaAs detector, over different lengths of an installed fiber link. Our proposal exhibits higher tolerance for noise in comparison to the standard receiver, thus enabling the distribution of secret keys in the condition of 4 dB-higher classical power., Comment: 13 figures

Frequency dissemination in phase-stabilized optical fiber networks for metrological frequency comparisons and precision measurements are promising candidates to overcome the limitations imposed by satellite techniques. However, network constraints restrict the availability of dedicated channels in the commonly-used C-band. Here, we demonstrate the dissemination of an SI-traceable ultrastable optical frequency in the L-band over a 456 km fiber network with ring topology, in which telecommunication data traffic occupies the full C-band. We characterize the optical phase noise and evaluate a link instability of $4.7\cdot 10^{-16}$ at 1 s and $3.8\cdot 10^{-19}$ at 2000 s integration time, and a link accuracy of $2\cdot 10^{-18}$, which is comparable to existing metrology networks in the C-band. We demonstrate the application of the disseminated frequency by establishing the SI-traceability of a laser in a remote laboratory. Finally, we show that our metrological frequency does not interfere with data traffic in the telecommunication channels. Our approach combines an unconventional spectral choice in the telecommunication L-band with established frequency-stabilization techniques, providing a novel, cost-effective solution for ultrastable frequency-comparison and dissemination, and may contribute to a foundation of a world-wide metrological network., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Quantum mechanics allows the distribution of intrinsically secure encryption keys by optical means. Twin-field quantum key distribution is the most promising technique for its implementation on long-distance fibers, but requires stabilizing the optical length of the communication channels between parties. In proof-of-principle experiments based on spooled fibers, this was achieved by interleaving the quantum communication with periodical adjustment frames. In this approach, longer duty cycles for the key streaming come at the cost of a looser control of channel length, and a successful key-transfer using this technique in a real world remains a significant challenge. Using interferometry techniques derived from frequency metrology, we developed a solution for the simultaneous key streaming and channel length control, and demonstrate it on a 206 km field-deployed fiber with 65 dB loss. Our technique reduces the quantum-bit-error-rate contributed by channel length variations to <1%, representing an effective solution for real-world quantum communications.

We demonstrate the enhancement and optimization of a cold strontium atomic beam from a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D-MOT) transversely loaded from a collimated atomic beam by adding a sideband frequency to the cooling laser. The parameters of the cooling and sideband beams were scanned to achieve the maximum atomic beam flux and compared with Monte Carlo simulations. We obtained a 2.3 times larger, and 4 times brighter, atomic flux than a conventional, single-frequency 2D-MOT, for a given total power of 200 mW. We show that the sideband-enhanced 2D-MOT can reach the loading rate performances of space demanding Zeeman slower-based systems, while it can overcome systematic effects due to thermal beam collisions and hot black-body radiation shift, making it suitable for both transportable and accurate optical lattice clocks. Finally we numerically studied the possible extensions of the sideband-enhanced 2D-MOT to other alkaline-earth species.

We present the scientific motivation for future space tests of the equivalence principle, and in particular the universality of free fall, at the $10^{-17}$ level or better. Quantum key distribution (QKD) based on entangled photon pairs holds the potential for repeater-based quantum networks connecting clients over long distance. We demonstrate long-distance entanglement distribution by means of polarisation-entangled photon pairs through two successive deployed 96 km-long telecommunications fibres in the same submarine cable. One photon of each pair was detected directly after the source, while the other travelled the fibre cable in both directions for a total distance of 192 km and attenuation of 48 dB. The observed two-photon Bell state exhibited a fidelity 85% $\pm$ 2% and was stable over several hours. The lack of coherent room-temperature sources in the whole terahertz spectral window (0.3-10 THz) has significantly hampered the growth of scientific and technological applications in this range. Among them, high-precision frequency measurements of molecular transitions play a central role but remain an open challenge. Here, room-temperature generation and detection of continuous-wave, broadly tunable, narrow-linewidth THz radiation are presented, and their application to high-resolution spectroscopy in the broad 1-7.5 THz spectral range is demonstrated. This result has been achieved by implementing a Cherenkov phase-matching scheme into a channel waveguide in a nonlinear crystal. This simple approach, entirely based on robust telecom technology, unprecedently merges in a single source an ultra-broad continuous-wave spectral coverage and a state-of-the-art accuracy (approximately 10-9) in molecular-transition-center determination.

In-field demonstrations in real-world scenarios boost the development of a rising technology towards its integration in existing infrastructures. Although quantum key distribution (QKD) devices are already adopted outside the laboratories, current field implementations still suffer from high costs and low performances, preventing this emerging technology from a large-scale deployment in telecommunication networks. Here we present a simple, practical and efficient QKD scheme with finite-key analysis, performed over a 21 dB-losses fiber link installed in the metropolitan area of Florence (Italy). The distribution of ultra-narrow linewidth laser radiation is an integral part of many challenging metrological applications. Changes in the optical pathlength induced by environmental disturbances compromise the stability and accuracy of optical fibre networks distributing the laser light and call for active phase noise cancellation. Here we present a laboratory scale optical (at 578 nm) fibre network featuring all polarisation maintaining fibres in a setup with low optical powers available and tracking voltage-controlled oscillators implemented. Techniques for the distribution of quantum-secured cryptographic keys have reached a level of maturity allowing them to be implemented in all kinds of environments, away from any form of laboratory infrastructure. Here, we detail the distribution of entanglement between Malta and Sicily over a 96 km-long submarine telecommunications optical fibre cable. We used this standard telecommunications fibre as a quantum channel to distribute polarisation-entangled photons and were able to observe around 257 photon pairs per second, with a polarisation visibility above 90%. Our experiment demonstrates the feasibility of using deployed submarine telecommunications optical fibres as long-distance quantum channels for polarisation-entangled photons. Earthquake monitoring across the globe is currently achieved with networks of seismic stations. The data from these networks have been instrumental in advancing our understanding of the Earth's interior structure and dynamic behaviour. However, almost all seismic stations are located on land and earthquakes of magnitude smaller than 4 at the bottom of the oceans remain largely undetected. Here we show that ordinary telecommunication optical fibre links can detect seismic events when combined with state-of-the-art frequency metrology techniques. We have detected earthquakes over terrestrial and submarine optical fibre links with length ranging from 75 to 535 km and a geographical distance from the earthquake's epicentre ranging from 25 to 18,500 km. In contrast to existing commercial reflectometry-based acoustic sensing methods used widely in the oil and gas industry, which are limited to only a few tens of kilometres, the technique presented here can be extended over thousands of kilometres, paving the way for detection of remote underwater earthquakes. By using the proposed technique on the existing extensive submarine optical fibre infrastructure, which already criss-crosses the seas and oceans, a global seismic network for real-time detection of underwater earthquakes could be implemented. The advent of novel measurement instrumentation can lead to paradigm shifts in scientific research. Optical atomic clocks, due to their unprecedented stability and uncertainty, are already being used to test physical theories and herald a revision of the International System of units (SI). However, to unlock their potential for cross-disciplinary applications such as relativistic geodesy, a major challenge remains. This is their transformation from highly specialized instruments restricted to national metrology laboratories into flexible devices deployable in different locations. Here we report the first field measurement campaign performed with a ubiquitously applicable $^{87}$Sr optical lattice clock. We use it to determine the gravity potential difference between the middle of a mountain and a location 90 km apart, exploiting both local and remote clock comparisons to eliminate potential clock errors. A local comparison with a $^{171}$Yb lattice clock also serves as an important check on the international consistency of independently developed optical clocks. This campaign demonstrates the exciting prospects for transportable optical clocks.

We report the absolute frequency measurement of the unperturbed transition 1S0 - 3P0 at 578 nm in 171Yb realized in an optical lattice frequency standard. The absolute frequency is measured 518 295 836 590 863.55(28) Hz relative to a cryogenic caesium fountain with a fractional uncertainty of 5.4x10-16 . We present laser results obtained from a Dy$^{3+}$-Tb$^{3+}$ co-doped LiLuF$_{4}$ crystal, pumped by a blue emitting InGaN laser diode, aiming for the generation of a compact 578 nm source. We exploit the yellow Dy$^{3+}$ transition $^{4}$F$_{9/2}$ $\Longrightarrow$ $^{6}$H$_{13/2}$ to generate yellow laser emission. The lifetime of the lower laser level is quenched via energy transfer to co-doped Tb$^{3+}$ ions in the fluoride crystal. We report the growth technique, spectroscopic study and room temperature continuous wave (cw) laser results in a hemispherical cavity at 574 nm and with a highly reflective output coupler at 578 nm. A yellow laser at 578 nm is very relevant for metrological applications, in particular for pumping of the forbidden $^{1}$S$_{0} \Longrightarrow ^{3}$P$_{0}$ Ytterbium clock transition, which is recommended as a secondary representation of the second in the international system (SI) of units. We report on the first direct observation of fast spin-exchange coherent oscillations between different long-lived electronic orbitals of ultracold $^{173}$Yb fermions. We measure, in a model-independent way, the strength of the exchange interaction driving this coherent process. This observation allows us to retrieve important information on the inter-orbital collisional properties of $^{173}$Yb atoms and paves the way to novel quantum simulations of paradigmatic models of two-orbital quantum magnetism., Comment: In this version of the preprint we have swapped the assignment of the eg+ and eg- states to the spectroscopic signals, thus correcting a wrong attribution in the previous version. This article describes a high-power and narrow-linewidth laser source at 399 nm useful for cooling and trapping of ytterbium atoms. A continuous-wave titanium-sapphire laser at 798 nm is frequency doubled using a lithium triborate crystal in an enhancement cavity. We performed a two-way remote optical phase comparison on optical fiber. Two optical frequency signals were launched in opposite directions in an optical fiber and their phases were simultaneously measured at the other end. In this technique, the fiber noise was passively cancelled, and we compared two optical frequencies at the ultimate 1E-21 stability level. The experiment was performed on a 47 km fiber that is part of the metropolitan network for Internet traffic. The technique relies on the synchronous measurement of the optical phases at the two ends of the link, that is made possible by the use of digital electronics. This scheme offers several advantages with respect to active noise cancellation, and can be upgraded to perform more complex tasks.

We describe a fiber optical gyroscope based on the Sagnac effect realized on a multiplexed telecom fiber network. Our loop encloses an area of 20 km^2 and coexists with Internet data traffic. This Sagnac interferometer achieves a sensitivity of about 1e-8 (rad/s)/sqrt(Hz), thus approaching ring laser gyroscopes without using narrow-linewidth laser nor sophisticated optics. The proposed gyroscope is sensitive enough for seismic applications, opening new possibilities for this kind of optical fiber sensors

We describe the application of Raman Optical-fiber Amplification (ROA) for the phase coherent transfer of optical frequencies in an optical fiber link. ROA uses the transmission fiber itself as a gain medium for bi-directional coherent amplification. In a test setup we evaluated the ROA in terms of on-off gain, signal-to-noise ratio, and phase noise added to the carrier. We transferred a laser frequency in a 200 km optical fiber link with an additional 16 dB fixed attenuator (equivalent to 275 km of fiber on a single span), and evaluated both co-propagating and counter-propagating amplification pump schemes, demonstrating nonlinear effects limiting the co-propagating pump configuration. The frequency at the remote end has a fractional frequency instability of 3e-19 over 1000 s with the optical fiber link noise compensation.

We stabilized the frequency of a compact planar-waveguide external cavity laser (ECL) on a Fabry-P\'erot cavity (FPC) through a Pound-Drever-Hall scheme. The residual frequency stability of the ECL is 1E-14, comparable to the stability achievable with a fiber laser (FL) locked to a FPC through the same scheme. We set up an optical link of 100 km, based on fiber spools, that reaches 1E-19 relative stability, and we show that its performances using the ECL or FL are comparable. Thus ECLs could serve as an excellent replacement for FLs in optical links where cost-effectiveness and robustness are important considerations.
