1. Selective excitation of high-order modes in two-dimensional cavity resonator integrated grating filters

Abstract

The selective spatial mode excitation of a bi-dimensional grating-coupled micro-cavity called a Cavity Resonator Integrated Grating Filter (CRIGF) is reported using an incident beam shaped to reproduce the theoretical emission profiles of the device in one- and subsequently two-dimensions.In both cases, the selective excitation of modes up to order 10 (per direction) is confirmed by responses exhibiting one (respectively two) spectrally narrow-band resonance(s) with a good extinction of the other modes, the latter being shown to depend on the parity and order(s) of the involved modes. These results paves the way towards the demonstration of multi-wavelength spatially-selective reflectors or fibre-to-waveguide couplers. Also, subject to an appropriate choice of the materials constituting the CRIGF, this work can be extended to obtain mode-selectable laser emission or nonlinear frequency conversion., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Large cross-section GaN waveguides are proposed as a suitable architecture to achieve integrated quantum photonic circuits. Directional couplers with this geometry have been designed with aid of the beam propagation method and fabricated using inductively coupled plasma etching. Scanning electron microscopy inspection shows high quality facets for end coupling and a well defined gap between rib pairs in the coupling region. Optical characterization at 800 nm shows single-mode operation and coupling-length-dependent splitting ratios. Two photon interference of degenerate photon pairs has been observed in the directional coupler by measurement of the Hong-Ou-Mandel dip with 96% visibility., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

International audience; A numerical study of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in cavity resonator integrated grating filters (CRIGFs) shows extraordinary strong conversion rates in planar corrugated waveguides based on Lithium Niobate layers, not exceeding 625 µm in length. The key idea is to couple to the dark mode of the structure at the pump frequency that has a Q-factor much stronger than the bright mode commonly used. This is achieved by shifting the grating coupler between the enclosing Bragg mirrors, resulting in an asymmetric structure. Three asymmetric structures are proposed: without any matching, with impedance matching and with indirect phase matching through an additional pair of gratings. They offer respectively increasing conversion rates of η=4.31x10-3 , 0.149 & 2.38 W-1 , which compared to a symmetric CRIGF (η=7.12x10-6 W-1) offer respectively more than 2, 4 and 5 orders of magnitude improvement of the conversion rate.

Abstract

A detailed study of an array-format 1.055[micro]m microchip semiconductor disk laser that utilizes a microlens-patterned diamond both as an array of stabilizing output coupling mirrors and a heatspreader is reported. The results from the thermal study confirmed the thermal management capabilities and power scalability of the microlensed diamond configuration.

A continuously tunable semiconductor disk laser with intracavity second-harmonic generation (SHG) is evaluated using a wedged and antireflection-coated diamond heatspreader. Findings reveal output powers of more than 600 mW tunable over 10 nm around 530 nm.

Abstract

We report on the effects of combined strain-compensating and strain-mediating layers of various widths on the optical properties of 1.3 mu m GaInNAs/GaAs single quantum well structures grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). While the emission wavelength of GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells can be redshifted by the adoption of strain-compensated GaNAs layers, the material quality is degraded by the increased stress at the well/barrier interface. This detrimental effect can be cured by inserting a strain-mediating InGaAs layer between them. Contrary to what is expected, however, the emission wavelength is blueshifted by the insertion of the InGaAs layer, which is attributed to the reduced N incorporation due to the improved interface quality. Our results indicate that the optical properties of MOVPE-grown GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells can be optimized in quantum efficiency and emission wavelength by combination of strain-compensating and strain-mediating layers with suitable characteristics. Abstract

We report on the comparative electronic state characteristics of particular GalnNAs/GaAs quantum well structures that emit near 1.3 and 1.5 μm wavelength at room temperature. While the electronic structure of the 1.3 μm sample is consistent with a standard quantum well, the 1.5 μm sample demonstrate quite different characteristics. By using photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectroscopy at various detection wavelengths, we demonstrate that the macroscopic electronic states in the 1.5 μm structures originate from phase-separated quantum dots instead of quantum wells. PL measurements with spectrally selective excitation provide further evidence for the existence of composition-separated phases. The evidence is consistent with phase segregation during the growth leading to two phases, one with high In and N content which accounts for the efficient low energy 1.5 μm emission, and the other one having lower In and N content which contributes metastable states and only emits under excitation in a particular wavelength range.
