The production of both gravitational waves and short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) is widely associated with the merger of compact objects. Several studies have modelled the evolution of the electromagnetic emission using the synchrotron emission produced by the deceleration of both a relativistic top-hat jet seen off-axis, and a wide-angle quasi-spherical outflow (both using numerical studies). In this study we present an analytical model of the synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission for an off-axis top-hat jet and a quasi-spherical outflow. We calculate the light curves obtained from an analytic model in which the synchrotron and SSC emission (in the fast- or slow-cooling regime) of an off-axis top-hat jet and a quasi-spherical outflow are decelerated in either a homogeneous or a wind-like circumburst medium. We show that the synchrotron emission of the quasi-spherical outflow is stronger than that of the off-axis jet during the first $\sim$ 10 - 20 days, and weaker during the next $\gtrsim$ 80 days. Moreover, we show that if the off-axis jet is decelerated in a wind-like medium, then the SSC emission is very likely to be detected. Applying a MCMC code to our model (for synchrotron emission only), we find the best-fit values for the radio, optical and X-ray emission of GRB 170817A which are in accordance with observations. For GRB 170817A, we find using our model that the synchrotron emission generated by the quasi-spherical outflow and off-axis top-hat jet increase as $F_\nu\propto t^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha\lesssim 0.8$ and $\alpha>3$, respectively. Finally, we obtain the correspondent SSC light curves which are in accordance with the very-high-energy gamma-ray upper limits derived with the GeV - TeV observatories., Comment: 19 pages and 6 figures. After two years of operation, the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory has analyzed the TeV cosmic-ray sky over an energy range between $2.0$ and $72.8$ TeV. The HAWC detector is a ground-based air-shower array located at high altitude in the state of Puebla, Mexico. Using 300 light-tight water tanks, it collects the Cherenkov light from the particles of extensive air showers from primary gamma rays and cosmic rays. This detection method allows for uninterrupted observation of the entire overhead sky (2~sr instantaneous, 8.5~sr integrated) in the energy range from a few TeV to hundreds of TeV. Like other detectors in the northern and southern hemisphere, HAWC observes an energy-dependent anisotropy in the arrival direction distribution of cosmic rays. The observed cosmic-ray anisotropy is dominated by a dipole moment with phase $\alpha\approx40^{\circ}$ and amplitude that slowly rises in relative intensity from $8\times10^{-4}$ at 2 TeV to $14\times10^{-4}$ around 30.3 TeV, above which the dipole decreases in strength. A significant large-scale ($>60^{\circ}$ in angular extent) signal is also observed in the quadrupole and octupole moments, and significant small-scale features are also present, with locations and shapes consistent with previous observations. Compared to previous measurements in this energy range, the HAWC cosmic-ray sky maps improve on the energy resolution and fit precision of the anisotropy. We report on the measurement of the all-particle cosmic ray energy spectrum with the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory in the energy range 10 to 500 TeV. HAWC is a ground based air-shower array deployed on the slopes of Volcan Sierra Negra in the state of Puebla, Mexico, and is sensitive to gamma rays and cosmic rays at TeV energies. The data used in this work were taken from 234 days between June 2016 to February 2017. The primary cosmic-ray energy is determined with a maximum likelihood approach using the particle density as a function of distance to the shower core. Introducing quality cuts to isolate events with shower cores landing on the array, the reconstructed energy distribution is unfolded iteratively. The measured all-particle spectrum is consistent with a broken power law with an index of $-2.49\pm0.01$ prior to a break at $(45.7\pm0.1$) TeV, followed by an index of $-2.71\pm0.01$. The spectrum also respresents a single measurement that spans the energy range between direct detection and ground based experiments. We present the development of a real-time flare monitor for the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory. The flare monitor has been fully operational since 2017 January and is designed to detect very high energy (VHE; $E\gtrsim100$ GeV) transient events from blazars on time scales lasting from 2 minutes to 10 hours in order to facilitate multiwavelength and multimessenger studies. These flares provide information for investigations into the mechanisms that power the blazars' relativistic jets and accelerate particles within them, and they may also serve as probes of the populations of particles and fields in intergalactic space. To date, the detection of blazar flares in the VHE range has relied primarily on pointed observations by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The recently completed HAWC observatory offers the opportunity to study VHE flares in survey mode, scanning 2/3 of the entire sky every day with a field of view of $\sim$1.8 steradians. In this work, we report on the sensitivity of the HAWC real-time flare monitor and demonstrate its capabilities via the detection of three high-confidence VHE events in the blazars Markarian 421 and Markarian 501., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, revised version submitted to The Astrophysical Journal on 1 June 2017

We present a "thin shell" model of the interaction of a biconical outflow and a streaming environment (aligned with the direction of the flow), as well as numerical (axisymmetric) simulations of such an interaction. A similar situation, although in a more complex setup, takes place at the head of the cometary structure of Mira. Thus, for most of the numerical simulations we explore parameters consistent with the observed bipolar outflow from Mira B. For these parameters, the interaction is non-radiative, so that a rather broad jet/streaming environment interaction region is formed. In spite of this, a reasonable agreement between the thin-shell analytic model and the numerical simulations is obtained., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in RevMexAA

We model the cometary structure around Mira as the interaction of an AGB wind from Mira A, and a streaming environment. Our simulations introduce the following new element: we assume that after 200 kyr of evolution in a dense environment Mira entered the Local Bubble (low density coronal gas). As Mira enters the bubble, the head of the comet expands quite rapidly, while the tail remains well collimated for a 100 kyr timescale. The result is a broad-head/narrow-tail structure that resembles the observed morphology of Mira's comet. Numerical simulations of HH jets never show side-entrainment of environmental material into the jet beam. This is because the bow shock associated with the jet head pushes the surrounding environment into a dense shell, which is never in direct contact with the sides of the jet beam. We present 3D simulations in which a side-streaming motion (representing the motion of the outflow source through the surrounding medium) pushes the post-bow shock shell into direct contact with the jet beam. Even thought a large amount of long gamma ray bursts (LGRBs) present quiescent periods, their origin remains unclear. The rotation rate in pre-supernova cores is an important ingredient which can profoundly affect the post-collapse evolution and associated energy release in supernovae and long gamma ray bursts (LGRBs). Previous work has focused on whether the specific angular momentum is above or below the critical value required for the creation of a centrifugally supported disk around a black hole. Here, we explore the effect of the distribution of angular momentum with radius in the star, and show that qualitative transitions between high and low angular momentum flow, corresponding to high and low luminosity accretion states, can effectively be reflected in the energy output, leading to variability and the possibility of quiescent times in LGRBs., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, 2 Tables, accepted for publication in ApJ
