Objective Indigenous women experience structural barriers to wellness rooted in colonialism and related socio-political processes, making participation in physical activity and access to balanced nutrition challenging. In response, a holistic wellness program was developed in Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada. Multiple program iterations have since been completed in urban and rural including reserve) settings across Alberta: in Onion Lake Cree Nation, in, Lloydminster, and in Calgary. The program includes physical activity, nutrition education, access to local healthcare support, and sharing circles to facilitate reflection. This article collates three years of qualitative data between programs to answer the question: "What does the program do?" Methods Between 2017 and 2019, 24 participants, four facilitators, and three community champions completed post-program interviews. mixed-methods, qualitative, two-part analysis was completed involving thematic analysis of transcripts followed by a structured consensus-building approach called nominal group technique (NGT). Results Collaborative analyses revealed that the program enables: 1) self-actualization through collective effort, including development of knowledge, skills, beliefs, and behaviours needed to manage one's own health, 2) improved personal wellness, and 3) access to social and cultural supports. Cultural relevancy and safety were identified as key elements in the context that supported these changes. Conclusion The wellness program for Indigenous women demonstrates positive impacts on the health and wellbeing of participants. Benefits naturally extend to participants' families, as well as to communities involved through capacity-building. Smoking cessation after a cancer diagnosis can significantly improve a person's prognosis, treatment efficacy and safety, and quality of life. In 2012, Cancer Care Ontario (now part of Ontario Health) introduced a Framework for Smoking Cessation, to be implemented for new ambulatory cancer patients at the province's 14 Regional Cancer Centres (RCCs). Over time, the program has evolved to become more efficient, use data for robust performance management, and broaden its focus to include new patient populations and additional data collection. In 2017, the framework was revised from a 5As to a 3As brief intervention model, along with an opt-out approach to referrals. The revised model was based on emerging evidence, feedback from stakeholders, and an interim program evaluation. Results showed an initial increase in referrals to cessation services. Two indicators (tobacco use screening and acceptance of a referral) are routinely monitored as part of Ontario Health's system-wide performance management approach, which has been identified as a key driver of change among RCCs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many RCCs reported a decrease in these indicators. RCCs that were able to maintain a high level of smoking cessation activities during the pandemic offer valuable lessons, including the opportunity to swiftly leverage virtual care. Future directions for the program include capturing data on cessation outcomes and expanding the intervention to new populations. A focus on system recovery from COVID-19 will be paramount. The distribution and impacts of non-native earthworms are poorly documented in Atlantic Canada meaning that we have limited knowledge about the relationship between earthworms and forest properties. To address this knowledge gap, we surveyed earthworms and sampled the soil organic layer in 41 forest stands located in New Brunswick to investigate their relationship with forest properties and impact on organic layer thickness and carbon content. We found earthworms at 39 % of the sites that we surveyed. Earthworms were more common in hardwood stands than softwood stands, at low elevations, and near current or historical human activity. Sites with earthworms had thinner organic layers and less carbon in the soil organic layer. A simple two-pool Lotka-Volterra model described the relationship between earthworm abundance and organic layer carbon well. The model predicted that earthworm invasions take about a decade to reach numbers typical of invaded sites and half a century to reach carrying capacity. Together these data suggest that, despite their long-term regional presence, much of the Acadian Forest that is not adjacent to human activity remains unimpacted and vulnerable to the effects of non-native earthworms. • Non-native earthworms were found at 39 % of sites studied in New Brunswick. • Earthworms were most common in hardwood stands at low elevation near human activity. • Modelling predicted earthworm invasions take ten years to reach 100 m−2. • Modelling predicted earthworms reach a carrying capacity of 172 m−2 in 60 years. • Earthworms correlated with a 65 % loss in organic layer carbon maybe to mineral soil. The impacts of climate change on biodiversity can be modulated by other changing environmental conditions (e.g. induced by land‐use change). The potential interactive effects of climate change and land use have rarely been studied for soil organisms. To test the effects of changing climatic conditions and land use on soil invertebrates, we examined earthworm communities across different seasons in different grassland‐use types (intensively managed grassland, extensively managed meadow and extensively managed sheep pasture). We predicted that the strength of climate change effects would vary with season and land use. Overall, extracted earthworm populations showed the strongest variations in response to the season, indicating major differences in activity patterns and extraction efficiency, whereas climate change and different grassland‐use types had fewer and weaker effects. Future climate, characterized by slightly higher precipitation in spring and autumn but a strong reduction during the summer, had positive effects on the abundance of extracted adult earthworms in spring but then reduced the abundance of active earthworms across the remaining seasons. In contrast, the total biomass of juveniles tended to be consistently lower under future climate conditions. Earthworm species responded differently to the climate change and different grassland management types, and these species‐specific responses further varied strongly across seasons. Intensive grassland management had negative effects, due to plant community composition, whereas sheep grazing favoured earthworm populations, due to dung deposition. There were only limited interactive effects between climate and land use, which thus did not support our main hypothesis. Nevertheless, these results highlight the complex and context‐dependent responses of earthworm communities and activity patterns to climate change, with potential consequences for long‐term population dynamics and crucial ecosystem functions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and perspectives of men who have had prostate cancer to better understand the effect of prostate cancer and associated stigmas on men in the Canadian province Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). PARTICIPANTS & SETTING: Eleven men from NL who have had prostate cancer participated in semistructured interviews exploring their perspectives and experiences of prostate cancer and stigma. METHODOLOGIC APPROACH: A social-ecological framework was used to understand experiences from different domains. Interviews were analyzed using Lichtman's three Cs approach. Analysis focused on establishing themes of the participants' lived experience of prostate cancer and related stigma. FINDINGS: Participants described how emasculating a prostate cancer diagnosis can feel. They identified ways prostate cancer negatively affected their behaviors and sense of self, described coping with the diagnosis and different strategies, and talked about broader system change required to address prostate cancer stigma. Participants expressed a need for additional support from healthcare providers (HCPs). IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: HCPs, such as oncology nurses, may be able to reduce stigmatization by providing patient navigation, improving information delivery, or providing psychosocial counseling to individuals experiencing feelings of internal or external stigmatization related to prostate cancer. The flipped classroom approach, used for many years in the humanities and the basic sciences, is becoming increasingly popular in public health education. This article describes the implementation and evaluation of a master's-level Environmental and Occupational Health course, a required course in a Master of Public Health program at a mid-sized Canadian university. The course was designed using a flipped classroom approach and delivered online using a learning management system and interactive web-conferencing technology. Using a pre- and postsurvey design, we assessed improvements in student's self-reported knowledge and skills, student learning experiences in the course, and the impact of specific course components on critical thinking and student engagement. Our results suggest that this approach enabled the achievement of course learning outcomes and provided positive learning experiences overall. Additionally, we find that the course promoted critical thinking and enabled student engagement in the context of online education for this small group of graduate-level public health students. We conclude by discussing key lessons learned for providing optimal learning experiences and outcomes in online graduate-level public health education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In total, 42 collections were taken from Watson Lake to Dawson City and produced two species new to the Yukon: Eiseniella tetraedra and Lumbricus castaneus. The collections near Watson Lake, which is in the southeastern portion of the territory, were taken during the 2019 Yukon Conservation Data Centre Bioblitz. This brings the number of known species in the Yukon to ten. A collection in Kluane National Park produced the second sample of Arctiostrotus fontinalis in the territory. Bimastos parvus from Dawson City was also the second collection in the Yukon since the first in 1993. The most frequently encountered species in the Yukon are Dendrobaena octaedra and Dendrodrilus rubidus. Lumbricus rubellus is the first earthworm species to be reported from the Skagway area in Alaska. We present a key and illustrated glossary to the species in the Yukon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

'Physical literacy' (PL) education—that is, teaching foundational skills, attitudes, behaviors and knowledge about lifelong involvements in physical activities, is an important aspect for health promotion among children. Universities have been playing a critical role by teaching future PL professionals. Additionally, various universities have offered university-based PL programming for neighborhood children as a way of public health promotion service and community engagement. However, this additional role of universities and the ways of promoting the quality of this type of health promotion service programming have not been investigated in the current research literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the practicable strategies to enhance the quality of university-based PL programming for children from the perspectives of community stakeholders. Overall, 24 community stakeholders who held professional positions that are related to PL education participated in a 90-min focus group interview. This grounded theory study identified that university-based PL programming for children should be (i) inclusive, (ii) collaborative, (iii) welcoming and (iv) responsive. Practical suggestions and recommendations were also provided. This study has provided empirical knowledge to prioritize aspects for the future actions in planning and implementing university-based PL programming for children and informed for further cross-cultural comparisons amongst the perspectives of participants, university service providers and community stakeholders. The knowledge acquired from this research will also be translated to university service providers who operate similar type of health promotion service programming to the public. Human activities are accelerating global biodiversity change and have resulted in severely threatened ecosystem services. A large proportion of terrestrial biodiversity is harbored by soil, but soil biodiversity has been omitted from many global biodiversity assessments and conservation actions, and understanding of global patterns of soil biodiversity remains limited. In particular, the extent to which hotspots and coldspots of aboveground and soil biodiversity overlap is not clear. We examined global patterns of these overlaps by mapping indices of aboveground (mammals, birds, amphibians, vascular plants) and soil (bacteria, fungi, macrofauna) biodiversity that we created using previously published data on species richness. Areas of mismatch between aboveground and soil biodiversity covered 27% of Earth's terrestrial surface. The temperate broadleaf and mixed forests biome had the highest proportion of grid cells with high aboveground biodiversity but low soil biodiversity, whereas the boreal and tundra biomes had intermediate soil biodiversity but low aboveground biodiversity. While more data on soil biodiversity are needed, both to cover geographic gaps and to include additional taxa, our results suggest that protecting aboveground biodiversity may not sufficiently reduce threats to soil biodiversity. Given the functional importance of soil biodiversity and the role of soils in human well‐being, soil biodiversity should be considered further in policy agendas and conservation actions by adapting management practices to sustain soil biodiversity and considering soil biodiversity when designing protected areas. While most body image research has focused on young female populations, evidence has shown that as few as 12% of older women are satisfied with their body size. Recent studies have also highlighted how anti-aging discourses are promoting unrealistic body norms, which have shown to contribute to poor body image and altered health behaviors. A systematic review of empirical studies focused on older women's perspectives of health, body image, and the aging body is presented. Findings support that body image is a persistent, lifelong issue for women and should be considered when implementing healthy aging policies and practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

European earthworms were introduced to North America by European settlers about 400 years ago. Human-mediated introductions significantly contributed to the spread of European species, which commonly are used as fishing bait and are often disposed deliberately in the wild. We investigated the genetic structure of Lumbricus terrestris in a 100 km range south of Calgary, Canada, an area that likely was devoid of this species two decades ago. Genetic relationships among populations, gene flow, and migration events among populations were investigated using seven microsatellite markers and the mitochondrial 16S rDNA gene. Earthworms were collected at different distances from the city and included fishing baits from three different bait distributors. The results suggest that field populations in Alberta established rather recently and that bait and field individuals in the study area have a common origin. Genetic variance within populations decreased outside of the urban area, and the most distant populations likely originated from a single introduction event. The results emphasise the utility of molecular tools to understand the spatial extent and connectivity of populations of exotic species, in particular soil-dwelling species, that invade native ecosystems and to obtain information on the origin of populations. Earthworms are a key group of detritivores and ecosystem engineers in many ecosystems worldwide, yet we have a limited understanding of how their diversity varies globally. Synthesis of global data on earthworms would allow a range of important ecological, evolutionary, and applied questions to be addressed. We conducted a survey on global earthworm data at the 10th International Symposium on Earthworm Ecology (ISEE10) and sent an electronic survey to additional earthworm researchers. Respondents were asked about existing databases, research interests, required data, and research locations. Most researchers were aware of at least one database with earthworm data, with a total of 19 current databases being identified. Most of the top questions listed by researchers related to distributions and diversity at global scales, but traits, evolution, genetics, taxonomy, invasions, ecosystem functioning/impacts, ecotoxicology, and bioindicators were also key themes of interest. Correspondingly, distributional, environmental, and trait data were the primary data types required. Global data coverage was poor, with research being especially concentrated in Europe and the United States. Encouragingly, all researchers who currently had data indicated they would be willing to contribute it to a global database. While there are a number of key challenges associated with synthesis of earthworm data on a global scale (data limitations, taxonomic inconsistencies, logistical issues), the wide range of questions involving global data listed by researchers, and their willingness to contribute their own data, suggests there is strong interest in developing a comprehensive global database on earthworms. Aim Terrestrial invertebrates comprise a large proportion of alien species world-wide, yet a quantitative global synthesis of their effects on native species and ecosystems has not been explored. We conducted a meta-analysis to examine the ecological impacts of terrestrial invertebrate invaders and to test how impacts are modulated by the invader's trophic position, habitat attributes (i.e. insularity and disturbance) and the study methodology (observational versus experimental). Location Global. Methods We investigated the effects of terrestrial invertebrate invaders on populations, communities and ecosystems by conducting a random effects meta-analysis using 112 articles reporting data from 710 field and laboratory studies. The analysis included 16 insect, 11 earthworm, 7 slug and 1 nematode invaders. Results On average, across invaders, the presence of invaders reduced plant fitness (52%), animal diversity (33%) and animal abundance (29%). Leaf litter decomposition was 41% higher in the presence of invaders, while other ecosystem-level variables such as nutrient cycling were not affected in a consistent direction. Invasive predators and detritivores decreased animal abundance, whereas herbivores and omnivores had limited impacts. Single invaders increased soil nitrogen pools while multiple species did not. Insularity and disturbance did not affect the magnitude of the impacts significantly, mainly because there was a large variation among studies. Main conclusions Overall, our study indicates that terrestrial invertebrate invaders have significant consistent effects on populations, communities and ecosystems, with islands and disturbed sites not being more prone to impacts. However, effects vary considerably depending on the type of impact being examined and the trophic position of the invader. Since the 1990s, concerns about a global obesity epidemic have flourished. These concerns regarding obesity are expressed in popular culture and scientific literature and emphasize both weight and weight loss when defining health and well-being. As a result scholars are now calling attention to a "shadow epidemic" of weight stigma that is shown to have harmful physiological and psychological impacts in youth. In tandem with "globesity" concerns, there has been a similar concern expressed over the epidemic of type 2 diabetes, which some have termed "diabesity." Although there is less known about diabetes stigma, the topic has much overlap with obesity stigma. In this narrative review we discuss the related problems of obesity and type 2 diabetes stigma, with an emphasis on issues specific to youth, as relevant. Drawing from literature on weight bias, critical weight studies, and Health at Every Size (HAES), we highlight pedagogical approaches to address obesity stigma and their implications to redress the problem of type 2 diabetes-related stigma in health care. Given the substantial impacts of non-native species on invaded systems, an understanding of the rates and spatial patterns of invasive spread is critical. Spread may vary across spatial scales, with dispersal of invasive species occurring both via diffusive spread at local sites and long-distance jump dispersal at larger scales. Research on earthworm invasions in North American forests has focused on patterns of spread across landscapes, with less examination of spread at local sites. We sampled the exotic earthworm Dendrobaena octaedra (Savigny, 1826) on 500 m × 500 m grids at three sites in the boreal forest of northeastern Alberta in 2006 and again in 2012-2013 to examine distributional changes over time. Earthworms spread farther from roads (the presumed site of initial introduction) over time, and spatial patterns at our sites suggest transport by vehicles and waterways are key vectors of dispersal at the local level. Spread was estimated to be occurring at a rate of at least 17.9 m/year. Our study indicates that both diffusive spread and jump dispersal of earthworms can be important at local scales and that local diffusive spread may be substantially higher than previously estimated. In forest ecosystems, earthworms and wildfire are two ecological agents that cause carbon (C) stored in the forest floor to be transferred to the atmosphere as greenhouse gases, either through heterotrophic respiration (earthworms) or through periodical combustion (wildfire). For centuries, wildfire has been an important ecological driver in the boreal forests of Canada where most fire emissions to the atmosphere originate from the forest floor. In contrast, earthworms are recent invaders, having been introduced to the Canadian boreal during the 20th century. Their spread is mainly associated with anthropogenic activities. We examined stand-level effects of earthworms and wildfire on forest floor C by adapting an earthworm-C simulation model for the boreal and using it in combination with a forest C accounting model. Because the overall impact of an invasive species depends on its areal extent, we used a spatial model of earthworm spread to calculate the total predicted change in C storage at the landscape-level following earthworm invasions in northeastern Alberta. Depending on the ecological groups of earthworms modelled in stand-level simulations, the forest floor C stock was reduced by 49.7-94.3% after 125 years, although the majority of this reduction occurred 35-40 years after initiation of the invasion. Because earthworm activities reduced the amount of forest floor C available for burning, emissions from wildfire were lower in the presence of earthworms. Spatial modelling of earthworm effects within the 5,905,400 ha Alberta-Pacific Forestry Management Area projected that forest floor C stocks in the invaded stands decreased 50,875 Mg C by 2006, and 2,706,354 Mg C by 2056, compared with the same area if earthworms were not present. Loss of forest floor C averaged over the 50 year simulation was 10 g m² yr−1; similar in magnitude to estimates for C loss in the Canadian boreal due to wildfire or harvesting. These results indicate effects of non-native earthworms on the forest floor should be included in predictions of forest ecosystem C budgets to ensure accurate attribution of emissions to heterotrophic respiration versus combustion. More than 1180 non-native species, mostly of Palaearctic origin, have been recorded from the boreal zone of Canada, with the highest diversity on the island of Newfoundland and in the southern boreal zone of Ontario and Quebec. The non-native biota of the boreal zone (and of Canada in general) is poorly known in terms of species composition and distribution. A large proportion of species are associated with disturbed anthropogenic habitats such as urban areas, agricultural landscapes, transportation and communication corridors, and industrial developments. Natural habitats in the boreal zone have a high degree of resistance to invasion compared with those of other Canadian zones, likely owing to harsh climates, low light levels, poor soil nutrient availability, low soil pH, low productivity, and dense covering of the ground by plants, especially bryophytes. Of the relatively few non-native species that have successfully colonized the boreal zone, many decline greatly in abundance after a few years, suggesting biotic resilience. To date the boreal zone has shown the least resistance and resilience to large vertebrates (moose and white-tailed deer) translocated to islands, diseases of vertebrates, and earthworms. In general, the ecological impacts of non-native species on the boreal zone have been poorly studied, and there are few examples where such impacts are evident. Likewise, there has been little attempt to quantify the economic impacts of non-native species in either the boreal zone or in Canada as a whole. In the few cases where management measures have been implemented for highly destructive non-native species, results have been somewhat successful, especially where classical biological control measures have been implemented against insects on trees. Chemical and mechanical management measures have had only limited success in localized situations. Management resources are most effectively applied to reducing the risk of introduction. The risk to the boreal zone posed by future new non-native species is increasing with the warming climate and the fast and direct transport of goods into the boreal zone from points of origin. Interactions among the foraging behaviours of co-occurring animal species can impact population and community dynamics; the consequences of interactions between plant and animal foraging behaviours have received less attention. In North American forests, invasions by European earthworms have led to substantial changes in plant community composition. Changes in leaf litter have been identified as a critical indirect mechanism driving earthworm impacts on plants. However, there has been limited examination of the direct effects of earthworm burrowing on plant growth. Here we show a novel second pathway exists, whereby earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris L.) impact plant root foraging. In a mini-rhizotron experiment, roots occurred more frequently in burrows and soil cracks than in the soil matrix. The roots of Achillea millefolium L. preferentially occupied earthworm burrows, where nutrient availability was presumably higher than in cracks due to earthworm excreta. In contrast, the roots of Campanula rotundifolia L. were less likely to occur in burrows. This shift in root behaviour was associated with a 30% decline in the overall biomass of C. rotundifolia when earthworms were present. Our results indicate earthworm impacts on plant foraging can occur indirectly via physical and chemical changes to the soil and directly via root consumption or abrasion and thus may be one factor influencing plant growth and community change following earthworm invasion. More generally, this work demonstrates the potential for interactions to occur between the foraging behaviours of plants and soil animals and emphasizes the importance of integrating behavioural understanding in foraging studies involving plants. Ecologists are increasingly encouraged by funding agencies and professional societies to communicate their research with the public. However, most receive relatively little training in how to do this effectively. Furthermore, evaluation of whether such an investment by ecologists actually achieves conservation objectives is rare. We created an education program, involving print, television, radio, and internet media, to increase awareness about earthworm invasions and to discourage anglers from dumping earthworm bait. Using pre- and post-surveys, we evaluated our program's success in reaching its target audience and in changing knowledge and behavior. Few participants (4.1%) recalled seeing the program material and knowledge of the fact that earthworms are non-native in Alberta remained low (15.8% before, 15.1% after). Further, after being told about the negative effects of earthworms in forests, 46.7% of the anglers surveyed stated they would not change their bait disposal behavior in the future, with many commenting that they did not believe earthworms could be harmful. These results highlight the importance of evaluating education programs, rather than assuming they are successful. Given many participants' doubts that earthworms have negative effects, both regulations and education may be needed to reduce earthworm introductions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

: Ecosystem engineers affect other species by changing physical environments. Such changes may influence movement of organisms, particularly belowground where soil permeability can restrict dispersal. We investigated whether earthworms, iconic ecosystem engineers, influence microarthropod movement. Our experiment tested whether movement is affected by tunnels (i.e., burrows), earthworm excreta (mucus, castings), or earthworms themselves. Earthworm burrows form tunnel networks that may facilitate movement. This effect may be enhanced by excreta, which could provide resources for microarthropods moving along the network. Earthworms may also promote movement via phoresy. Conversely, negative effects could occur if earthworms alter predator-prey relationships or change competitive interactions between microarthropods. We used microcosms consisting of a box connecting a “source” container in which microarthropods were present and a “destination” container filled with autoclaved soil. Treatments were set up within the boxes, which also contained autoclaved soil, as follows: 1) control with no burrows; 2) artificial burrows with no excreta; 3) abandoned burrows with excreta but no earthworms; and 4) earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus) present in burrows. Half of the replicates were sampled once after eight days, while the other half were sampled repeatedly to examine movement over time. Rather than performing classical pairwise comparisons to test our hypotheses, we used AICc to assess support for three competing models (presence of tunnels, excreta, and earthworms). More individuals of Collembola, Mesostigmata, and all microarthropods together dispersed when tunnels were present. Models that included excreta and earthworms were less well supported. Total numbers of dispersing Oribatida and Prostigmata+Astigmata were not well explained by any models tested. Further research is needed to examine the impact of soil structure and ecosystem engineering on movement belowground, as the substantial increase in movement of some microarthropods when corridors were present suggests these factors can strongly affect colonization and community assembly. Abstract: In North America, many species of European earthworms have been introduced to northern forests. Facilitative or competitive interactions between these earthworm species may result in non-additive effects on native plant and animal species. We investigated the combined versus individual effects of the litter-dwelling earthworm Dendrobaena octaedra Savigny, 1826 and the deep-burrowing species Lumbricus terrestris L., 1758 on microarthropod assemblages from boreal forest soil by conducting a mesocosm experiment. Soil cores from earthworm-free areas of northern Alberta, Canada, were inoculated with D. octaedra alone, L. terrestris alone, both worm species together, or no earthworms. After 4.5 months, microarthropods were extracted from the soil, counted, and identified to higher taxa. Oribatid mites were further identified to family and genus. Abundance of microarthropods was significantly lower in the treatment containing both species than in the no earthworm treatment and the L. terrestris treatment. Oribatida and Prostigmata/Astigmata differed significantly among treatments and were lowest in the treatment containing both earthworm species, followed by the D. octaedra treatment, although post-hoc pairwise comparisons were not significant. Within the Oribatida, composition differed between the control and L. terrestris treatments as compared to the D. octaedra and both-species treatments, with Suctobelbella and Tectocepheus in particular having higher abundances in the control treatment. Effects of the two earthworm species on microarthropods were neither synergistic nor antagonistic. Our results indicate that earthworms can have strong effects on microarthropod assemblages in boreal forest soils. Invasional meltdowns, in which facilitation between species causes an accelerating increase in the number of introduced species or impacts, can cause large impacts in invaded systems. Earthworm invasion of northern forests has been suggested as a meltdown, with litter-dwelling species altering soil structure and facilitating mineral-soil or deep-burrowing earthworms that may be less capable of invading intact forest floors. We examined facilitation and synergistic effects of a litter-dwelling species ( Savigny, 1826) and a deep-burrowing species ( L., 1758). Boreal forest soil cores were inoculated with D. octaedra, L. terrestris, both species, a higher density of L. terrestris, or no worms. After 4.5 months, we found no differences in survival or biomass between treatments for either species. Cocoon production did not differ for L. terrestris, but D. octaedra produced significantly fewer cocoons with L. terrestris. The two species had an additive effect on organic horizon depths and bulk densities. 1. Roads are an important conduit for the spread of invasive species. Road age is a key factor that could influence the susceptibility of roads to invasion as older roads are typically subject to higher cumulative levels of human disturbance and propagule pressure than younger roads. We investigated the effects of road age on the spread of non-native earthworms, which act as ecosystem engineers. 2. We sampled earthworms and habitat variables at 98 roads in the boreal forest of Alberta, Canada, to determine the influence of road age on non-native earthworm occurrence at the landscape level. The extent and rate of local spread were also assessed at seven sites adjacent to old and young roads. Generalized estimating equations and zero-inflated negative binomial regression were used to analyze landscape- and local-level results, respectively. We used our models to create maps that predict the current and potential future extent of earthworms in north-eastern Alberta. 3. Probability of earthworm occurrence and extent of spread increased as road age increased. Areas closer to agriculture and towards the south and west of our study area were also significantly more likely to be invaded by earthworms. 4. Our spread model indicated that approximately 9% of the boreal forest of north-eastern Alberta is likely invaded by earthworms currently. This is projected to increase to 49% of suitable forest habitat over the next 50 years as human development intensifies in this region. 5. Synthesis and applications. Although the effects of roads and linear features are commonly investigated in relation to native species, our results emphasize the importance of considering the impacts of linear feature creation on the spread of invasive species. We demonstrate that road age in particular can be an important factor affecting the spread of invasive species. In the boreal forest, reducing the number of roads being constructed, restricting traffic, and reclaiming temporary roads will be critical to reduce the future extent of earthworm invasions. Population genetic studies can help to determine whether invasive species are established via single vs. multiple introduction events and also to distinguish among various colonization scenarios. We used this approach to investigate the introduction of Dendrobaena octaedra, a non-native earthworm species, to the boreal forest of northern Alberta. The spread of non-native earthworms in forested systems is not well understood, although bait abandonment and vehicular transport are believed to be important. Mitochondrial DNA sequencing revealed that multiple introductions of this species have occurred in northern Alberta, although individual populations may have been established by either single or multiple invaders introduced on one or more occasions. There was no relationship between genetic distances and either geographical distances or distances along road networks, suggesting that human-mediated jump dispersal is more common than diffusive spread via road networks or via active dispersal. As well, genetic diversity was significantly greater at boat launches than roads, indicating that multiple introductions may be more likely to occur at those locations. Focusing management efforts on areas where multiple introductions are likely to occur may help to reduce invasive species’ potential for adaptive evolution and subsequent rapid spread. We present a model of sperm competition that incorporates both spermand nonspermparts of the ejaculate. Our primary focus is on determining how ejaculate composition and size evolves as a function of the effects of seminal fluid on male reproductive success and as a function of asymmetry in sperm usage by females. The model predicts that different patterns of investment in sperm and seminal products are expected to evolve as a function of the bias in sperm usage by females. It also predicts the evolution of distinct patterns in ejaculate composition depending on the function of seminal fluid. Verbal and quantitative genetic models of sexually antagonistic coevolution suggest that coevolutionary arms races should be common. Sexual selection favors exaggeration of male persistence traits that are costly to females, and females, in turn, are selected to resist these traits. The heightened resistance by females is thought to then favor further exaggeration in the male trait, leading to an escalating coevolutionary arms race between persistence and resistance traits. Much of this theory, however, is based on an (implicit) assumption that there are tight constraints on how female resistance can evolve. We develop a theory that identifies and relaxes these constraints, allowing female resistance to evolve in a fashion that better reflects known empirical patterns in the evolution of female preference functions (the resistance trait). Our results suggest that evolutionary arms races that lead to the exaggeration of persistence and resistance will be much less common than formerly predicted. Females sometimes evolve indifference to male traits rather than resistance and can even evolve to discriminate against these traits. These alternative outcomes depend on the existence of genetic variance in the components of the female sensory system underlying female resistance and on the strength of natural selection acting on these components. Female indifference tends to evolve when natural selection on the sensory system is weak, and under these conditions, sexually antagonistic coevolution tends not to reduce female fitness significantly at equilibrium. When natural selection on the female sensory system is strong, however, then arms races are more likely, and female fitness is then sometimes significantly depressed at equilibrium. Sexually antagonistic coevolution is thus likely to have strong deleterious effects on population fitness only when female sensory traits are under strong natural selection to perform functions in addition to those involved with mating. Since a fourth MSH sequence, δ-MSH, has been detected in the proopiomelanocortin (POMC) gene of a dogfish and a stingray, members of superorder Squalea (class Chondrichthyes), it is possible that this novel MSH sequence might be a feature common to the POMC genes of all modern sharks and rays. As an initial step towards addressing this question, a full-length POMC cDNA was cloned and sequenced from the pituitary of the Port Jackson shark, Heterodontus portusjacksoni. The Port Jackson shark represents one of the oldest lineages in superorder Galea, and this superorder together with superorder Squalea form infraclass Neoselachii (the extant sharks and rays). The Port Jackson shark POMC cDNA has an open reading frame that is 1032 nucleotides in length and encodes the deduced amino acids sequences for β-endorphin, ACTH/α-MSH, β-MSH, γ-MSH, and δ-MSH. Port Jackson shark δ-MSH has 83% primary sequence identity with dogfish and stingray δ-MSH, and it appears that the δ-MSH sequence may have been the result of an internal domain duplication and reinsertion of the β-MSH sequence. The presence of the δ-MSH sequence in the POMC genes of representatives of both superorders of infraclass Neoselachii would indicate that the δ-MSH sequence must have been present in the ancestral euselachian shark that gave rise to the neoselachian radiation. There has been a growing focus on healthy aging in the political agenda. Discourses contained within policy documents have the potential to shape our notions of healthy aging and well-being. This comprehensive critical document analysis of provincial aging policies in Newfoundland and Labrador (2006–2015) contributes to a larger research study exploring aging women's notions of health and the body in relation to the aging process. The findings highlight how healthy aging discourses focus on the concept of productivity and how a certain type of health is required for ongoing contribution. The paper concludes by arguing that if healthy aging is framed around one's ability to remain productive, notions of health will remain limited to an externalized measure of output versus subjective experience of well-being. Methodology/Approach: Using a thematic analysis approach, we examined the experiences of students and preceptors in the RRCP. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Findings/Conclusions: Students valued RRCPs as a formative clinical experience and preceptors gained professionally from participating. The RRCPs enhanced students regard for, and knowledge of, rural medicine. Yet, contrary to the stated aims of the placement, students spent very little time in activities outside of the clinic, neither learning about the community nor about the life of a physician as a community member. Implications: Medical educators should recognise that students and preceptors will inevitably place different value on the different sociocultural and perceptual aspects of placements, namely clinical and non-clinical. Soil harbours high biodiversity, which is responsible for a large number of ecosystem services and functions. Despite its importance, across large scales little is known about the distribution, diversity and threats facing the organisms that live there. Environmental drivers will shape belowground communities across large scales, but they may not be the same as those shaping aboveground communities. This may have implications if aboveground diversity or environmental drivers are used as proxies for belowground diversity in conservation strategies. Here, we use a specifically compiled dataset on sampled earthworm diversity from across the globe (over 7000 sites in 55 countries) to predict earthworm diversity and identify which environmental drivers shape their diversity patterns across the globe. Earthworms are a key group of soil macrofauna which provide a number of ecosystem functions, and are easy to identify to species level, thus relatively large amounts of data is available across multiple scales. We created models using three measures of diversity; species richness, community abundance, and community biomass. Diversity predictors were based on environmental drivers in five categories; soil, habitat cover, precipitation, temperature, and water-retention properties of soil. We used mixed effects models, containing variables from the five categories of environmental drivers, to predict earthworm diversity across the globe. We show that local species richness and community abundance of earthworms typically did not peak in the tropics, but rather towards the poles, such as the southern tip of South America. Community biomass often peaked in the tropics, but other regions of the globe were also predicted to have just as high biomass, such as North America and the southern part of Russia. In all the models, climate variables were often the most important, with soil variables usually being of lower importance, which contradicts findings of previous small-scale studies that highlighted the significance of soil variables. Notably, as climatic variables are often used by aboveground modellers, this work suggests that methods can easily be transferred belowground. In contrast, as the patterns in earthworm diversity do not match patterns seen in other aboveground taxa (e.g., high diversity in the tropics), we cannot rely on conservation strategies based on aboveground diversity for soil macrofauna. And it's important that we understand diversity patterns of soil macrofauna, such as earthworms, due to their impact on many ecosystem functions. This work is the first step towards knowing how future changes in diversity drivers, such as earthworms, might affect earthworm diversity and what that means for the ecosystem functions upon which we depend. Background: In response to evidence about the health benefits of smoking cessation at time of cancer diagnosis, Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) (OH-CCO) instructed Regional Cancer Centres (RCC) to implement smoking cessation interventions (SCI). RCCs were given flexibility to implement SCIs according to their context but were required to screen new patients for tobacco status, advise patients about the importance of quitting, and refer patients to cessation supports. The purpose of this evaluation was to identify practices that influenced successful implementation across RCCs. Methods: A realist evaluation approach was employed. Realist evaluations examine how underlying processes of an intervention (mechanisms) in specific settings (contexts) interact to produce results (outcomes). A realist evaluation may thus help to generate an understanding of what may or may not work across contexts. Results: The RCCs with the highest Tobacco Screening Rates used a centralized system. Regarding the process for advising and referring, three RCCs offered robust smoking cessation training, resulting in advice and referral rates between 80% and 100%. Five RCCs surpassed the target for Accepted Referral Rates; acceptance rates for internal referral were highest overall. Introduction: The COVID‐19 pandemic had significant impacts on many aspects of health care and education, including the accreditation of medical education programmes. As a community of international educators, it is important that we study changes that resulted from the pandemic to help us understand educational processes more broadly. As COVID‐19 unfolded in Canada, a revised format of undergraduate medical accreditation was implemented, including a shift to virtual site visits, a two‐stage visit schedule, a focused approach to reviewing standards and the addition of a field secretary to the visit team. Our case study research aimed to evaluate the sociomaterial implications of these changes in format on the process of accreditation at two schools. Methods: We interviewed key informants to understand the impacts, strengths and limitations of changes made to the accreditation format. We used an abductive approach to analyse transcripts and applied a sociomaterial lens in looking for interconnections between the material and social changes that were experienced within the accreditation system. Results: Stakeholders within the accreditation system did not anticipate that changes to the accreditation format would have significant impacts on how accreditation functioned or on its overall outcomes. However, key informants described how the revised format of accreditation reconstructed how power was distributed and how knowledge was produced. The revised format contributed to changes in who held power within each of the programmes, within each of the visiting teams and between site members and visiting team members. As power shifted across stakeholders in response to material changes to the accreditation format, key informants described changes in how knowledge was produced. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the most powerful knowledge about any given programme might best be obtained through individualised tools, technologies and voices that are most meaningful to the unique context of each programme. Deliberate attention to how knowledge and power are influenced by the interactions between material and social processes within accreditation may help educators and leaders see the effects of change. Globally, Indigenous populations have been impacted by colonization. Populations who have endured colonization are at higher risk of developing chronic diseases. Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission emphasizes reducing barriers to participation in physical activity and recommends the creation of culturally relevant and supportive policies and programing. Physical activity is a cornerstone in health promotion and public health to combat chronic diseases; however, in Canada, Indigenous developed physical activity programing is sparse, and those targeting women are non-existent in some regions. Makoyoh'sokoi (The Wolf Trail Program) is an 18-week long, holistic wellness program that was created by and for Indigenous women. Makoyoh'sokoi was developed by communities following extensive consultation and cultural oversight. Makoyoh'sokoi's core program consists of 12 weeks of weekly physical activity programing and health education, followed by another 6 weeks of weekly health education. Notably, communities have control over the program to modify based on individual needs and challenges. Programs commence and conclude with a ceremony with Elders giving a blessing and opening each other to connection. The goals of Makoyoh'sokoi are to empower women, improve health outcomes, and to implement a sustainable program by training a network of community members in their respective communities to facilitate delivery. In an arts integrated interdisciplinary study set to investigate ways to improve social accountability (SA) in medical education, our research team has established a renewed understanding of compassion in the current SA movement. This paper explores the co-evolution of compassion and SA. The study used an arts integrated approach to investigate people's perceptions of SA in four medical schools across Australia, Canada, and the USA. Each school engaged approximately 25 participants who partook in workshops and in-depth interviews. We began with a study of SA and the topic of compassion emerged out of our qualitative data and biweekly meetings within the research team. Content analysis of the data and pedagogical discussion brought us to realize the importance of compassion in the practice of SA. The cultivation of compassion needs to play a significant role in a socially accountable medical educational system. Medical schools as educational institutions may operate themselves with compassion as a driving force in engaging partnership with students and communities. Introduction: Rural populations in Canada are generally in worse health when compared to their urban counterparts. In 2014, the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada formed a joint Task force to advocate for improved health in rural communities. As a task force, they developed the Rural Road Map for Action. This paper uses the Rural Road Map for Action as a framework to examine the current state of family medicine's Post-Graduate Medical Education (PGME) in Canada. Methods: Surveys were sent to the programme directors of all English- and French-speaking post-graduate family medicine programmes. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to analyse survey responses. Results: Thirteen of 17 respondents completed the questionnaire. Despite on-going efforts, our results suggest that few programmes have equity and diversity admission's policies for rural and Indigenous students; a gap exists between the number of residents who are educated in rural areas and those who end up practising in rural areas; residents lack skills in Indigenous health; and more funded professional development opportunities are needed for rural physicians. Conclusion: Rural healthcare concerns are typically under-represented in PGME. The Rural Road Map for Action brings focus to the specific healthcare needs of rural areas, highlighting a recruitment and retention strategy that aligns education, practice, policy and research activities. Medical schools and national physician organisations need to continue to advocate for the health of rural communities through increasing the rural physician workforce and providing appropriate training for rural practice. Globally, biological invasions can have strong impacts on biodiversity as well as ecosystem functioning. While less conspicuous than introduced aboveground organisms, introduced belowground organisms may have similarly strong effects. Here, we synthesize for the first time the impacts of introduced earthworms on plant diversity and community composition in North American forests. We conducted a meta-analysis using a total of 645 observations to quantify mean effect sizes of associations between introduced earthworm communities and plant diversity, cover of plant functional groups, and cover of native and non-native plants. We found that plant diversity significantly declined with increasing richness of introduced earthworm ecological groups. While plant species richness or evenness did not change with earthworm invasion, our results indicate clear changes in plant community composition: cover of graminoids and non-native plant species significantly increased, and cover of native plant species (of all functional groups) tended to decrease, with increasing earthworm biomass. Overall, these findings support the hypothesis that introduced earthworms facilitate particular plant species adapted to the abiotic conditions of earthworm-invaded forests. Further, our study provides evidence that introduced earthworms are associated with declines in plant diversity in North American forests. Aim Shifts in diet composition, abundance or distribution of native predators can occur as a result of exotic prey introductions. We examined effects of non-native earthworms and anthropogenic landscape disturbance on habitat selection by the American robin ( Turdus migratorius), a generalist predator, at landscape and local levels. We also investigated whether robins could act as vectors of spread for earthworm cocoons (egg cases). Location Boreal forest of Alberta, Canada. Methods We conducted robin and earthworm surveys at campgrounds, well pads, roads, pipelines, seismic lines and forest interiors across northern Alberta. At a subset of paired locations that had similar habitats and anthropogenic disturbance levels, we sampled both robins and earthworms. Results Both groups were most likely to occur at campgrounds, well pads and roads. Furthermore, robins were more likely to occur at locations where earthworms were present in our paired local-level surveys. This correlation between robin and earthworm distributions could be due to robins acting as a vector for earthworm spread, rather than robins' use of earthworms as prey. However, in tests using captive robins, earthworm cocoons did not survive digestion. Main conclusions Robin and earthworm distributions were correlated, likely due to robins' use of earthworms as prey. These results suggest exotic prey can strongly influence native predators at both landscape and local levels, with shifts in native predator distributions occurring as a result of spatial variability in exotic prey distributions. Although the impacts of ecosystem engineering by earthworms have been previously demonstrated, our study provides evidence that effects of earthworms can also cascade upwards via trophic interactions. A growing body of work examines the direct and indirect effects of climate change on ecosystems, typically by using manipulative experiments at a single site or performing meta‐analyses across many independent experiments. However, results from single‐site studies tend to have limited generality. Although meta‐analytic approaches can help overcome this by exploring trends across sites, the inherent limitations in combining disparate datasets from independent approaches remain a major challenge. In this paper, we present a globally distributed experimental network that can be used to disentangle the direct and indirect effects of climate change. We discuss how natural gradients, experimental approaches, and statistical techniques can be combined to best inform predictions about responses to climate change, and we present a globally distributed experiment that utilizes natural environmental gradients to better understand long‐term community and ecosystem responses to environmental change. The warming and (species) removal in mountains (WaRM) network employs experimental warming and plant species removals at high‐ and low‐elevation sites in a factorial design to examine the combined and relative effects of climatic warming and the loss of dominant species on community structure and ecosystem function, both above‐ and belowground. The experimental design of the network allows for increasingly common statistical approaches to further elucidate the direct and indirect effects of warming. We argue that combining ecological observations and experiments along gradients is a powerful approach to make stronger predictions of how ecosystems will function in a warming world as species are lost, or gained, in local communities. Introduction: One critical component of any rural community is its healthcare system. Rural healthcare systems are essential as rural communities have worse health outcomes when compared to urban areas. Rural healthcare systems might also have a positive impact on rural economies. In some rural areas, these health services are threatened with a reduction or closure. This rapid review was carried out to examine the impact of rural healthcare systems' declines on rural economies. Methods: We conducted a rapid review of peer-reviewed and grey literature sources on studies that examined the economic impact of rural healthcare on rural economies in Canada, Australia, Scandinavia and the United States of America (USA). We used a data extraction template adapted from the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination. Results: We found 17 research papers between two databases and nine websites. Articles examined various health professions (dentist, physician assistant and pharmacist), the inclusion of family physicians, a physician with an increased scope of practice (obstetrics and surgery), the impact of a rural primary care hospital, telemedicine, a distributed medical education programme and the health care sector. Conclusion: Rural healthcare seems to have a positive impact on jobs and labour-based wages in rural communities. There is a considerable need for research outside the USA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Only 13% of older Canadians achieve weekly physical activity (PA) recommendations suggesting that health promotion efforts are warranted. Tai Chi (TC) is a martial art identified as an accessible form of PA for older adults. While research has supported TC's ability to enhance health among those with chronic conditions, no studies have investigated healthy older adults who are experienced in TC practice. To uncover avenues to enhance PA rates and adherence, the study purpose was to explore qualitatively, the perspectives of experienced, healthy older adult TC practitioners. Older adults who identified as healthy and had been practicing TC for at least 1 year were recruited from a communitybased program in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. Semi-structured interviews, observations, and field notes were collected and analyzed using deductive and inductive content analysis. Eleven participants (Mean age = 64.9 years; male, n = 8) with an average of 13.6 years TC experience were enrolled. Analysis revealed five themes with associated subthemes including: reasons for joining (e.g., becoming active); participant principles related to TC and aging (e.g., being kind to an aging body); barriers to practice (e.g., class size); facilitators for practice (e.g., energy from softness), and group dynamics (e.g., delivery format). Findings suggest that in this population, TC is gentle and holistic, and facilitators to practice outweigh the barriers. Researchers and health care providers should adopt similar program characteristics (e.g., group-based format, supportive instructors, facilitated social network) when seeking to promote PA in older adults. Earthworms can act as ecosystem engineers by altering soil structure, which impacts other organisms and ecosystem functioning. Jumping worms (family Megascolecidae) originating in Asia have been spreading in North America, extending their northern range limits to Ontario, Canada in the last decade and to New Brunswick in 2021. At the northern limits of their current range, little research has been done to examine the effects of jumping worms in these new habitats since their recent establishment. Our objectives were to evaluate: (1) how jumping worms impact soil nitrogen and soil carbon; (2) how their presence impacts the abundance of non-native European earthworms (family Lumbricidae); and (3) whether two sampling methods (i.e., mustard solution and wooden discs) are equally effective at detecting jumping worms. We sampled a residential property in Oromocto, New Brunswick, which was the first location where jumping worms were found in the province. Jumping worms did not have significant impacts on the abundance and biomass of European earthworms or soil carbon content in the top 5 cm of the soil, but they did significantly affect soil nitrogen levels. Both sampling methods were equally effective at detecting the presence of jumping worms. Further research is needed in managed landscapes, urban areas, and forests to determine the ecosystem impacts and invasion dynamics of jumping worms in Canada as this invasion progresses. • Potential for non-linear effect of jumping worm abundance on soil nitrogen content. • No significant impact of jumping worms on European earthworm abundance or biomass. • No significant impact of jumping worms on total soil carbon content. • Mustard extraction and wood discs were equally effective at detecting jumping worms. The prevailing viewpoint in the study of sperm competition is that male sperm-allocation strategies evolve in response to the degree of sperm competition an ejaculate can expect to experience within a given mating. If males cannot assess the degree of sperm competition their ejaculate will face and/or they are unable to facultatively adjust sperm investment in response to perceived levels of competition, high sperm allocation (per mating) is predicted to evolve in the context of high sperm competition. An implicit assumption of the framework used to derive this result is that the degree of sperm competition is unaffected by changes in sperm-allocation strategies. We present theory based on an alternative perspective, in which the degree of sperm competition and the sperm-allocation strategy are coupled traits that coevolve together. Our rationale is that the pattern of sperm allocation in the population will, in part, determine the level of sperm competition by affecting the number of ejaculates per female in the population. In this setting, evolution in sperm-allocation strategies is driven by changes in underlying environmental parameters that influence both the degree of sperm competition and sperm allocation. Motivation and aim: Soil biodiversity is central to ecosystem function and services. It represents most of terrestrial biodiversity and at least a quarter of all biodiversity on Earth. Yet, research into broad, generalizable spatial and temporal patterns of soil biota has been limited compared to aboveground systems due to complexities of the soil system. We review the literature and identify key considerations necessary to expand soil macroecology beyond the recent surge of global maps of soil taxa, so that we can gain greater insight into the mechanisms and processes shaping soil biodiversity. We focus primarily on three groups of soil taxa (earthworms, mycorrhizal fungi and soil bacteria) that represent a range of body sizes and ecologies, and, therefore, interact with their environment at different spatial scales. Results: The complexities of soil, including fine‐scale heterogeneity, 3‐D habitat structure, difficulties with taxonomic delimitation, and the wide‐ranging ecologies of its inhabitants, require the classical macroecological toolbox to be expanded to consider novel sampling, molecular identification, functional approaches, environmental variables, and modelling techniques. Main conclusions: Soil provides a complex system within which to apply macroecological research, yet, it is this property that itself makes soil macroecology a field ripe for innovative methodologies and approaches. To achieve this, soil‐specific data, spatio‐temporal, biotic, and abiotic considerations are necessary at all stages of research, from sampling design to statistical analyses. Insights into whole ecosystems and new approaches to link genes, functions and diversity across spatial and temporal scales, alongside methodologies already applied in aboveground macroecology, invasion ecology and aquatic ecology, will facilitate the investigation of macroecological processes in soil biota, which is key to understanding the link between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in terrestrial ecosystems. Colonization, racism, and resulting policies have fractured familial and intergenerational relationships. For many Indigenous women in Canada, these forces continue to create socioeconomic inequality that play out in nutritional insecurity and lack of access to physical activity resources, in turn undermining overall wellness. Women Warriors (WW), an eight-week physical activity-based wellness program, was designed to support Indigenous women's efforts to increase physical activity levels, improve nutrition, and develop support systems for improved health. Notably, it offered access to exercise instruction and facilities that may have otherwise been inaccessible to participants. To evaluate the impact of the program, we completed a mixed method pre/post evaluation of four program sessions, from January to December 2016. The WW program resulted in increased weekly pedometer step counts, increased nutrition skill acquisition, and improved confidence in exercising as a group and increased consumption of fruit and vegetables. The program also produced improvements in anthropometric measures and a reduction in blood pressure values. Participants developed positive social support systems and were introduced to health and social resources in their community. They reported appreciating that the program motivated them by way of accountability to others and offered opportunity to share experiences in sharing circles. The program identified barriers to health change, including lack of resources that support physical activity, healthy eating, and personal stress management. Participants recommended increasing the program's duration and intensity, enhancing the nutrition and health education offered, and increasing opportunities for socialization and relationship building. The WW program was well received and shows promise as a practical, community-based method to support Indigenous women interested in increasing positive health behaviours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Quitting smoking after a diagnosis of cancer results in greater response to treatment and decreased risk of disease recurrence and second primary cancers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential cost‐effectiveness of two smoking cessation approaches: the current basic smoking cessation program consisting of screening for tobacco use, advice, and referral; and a best practice smoking cessation program that includes the current basic program with the addition of pharmacological therapy, counseling, and follow‐up. A Markov model was constructed that followed 65‐year‐old smokers with cancer over a lifetime horizon. Transition probabilities and mortality estimates were obtained from the published literature. Costs were obtained from standard costing sources in Ontario and reports. Probabilistic and deterministic sensitivity analyses were conducted to address parameter uncertainties. For smokers with cancer, the best practice smoking cessation program was more effective and more costly than the basic smoking cessation program. The incremental cost‐effectiveness ratio of the best practice smoking cessation program compared to the basic smoking cessation program was $3367 per QALY gained and $5050 per LY gained for males, and $2050 per QALY gained and $4100 per LY gained for females. Results were most sensitive to the hazard ratio of mortality for former and current smokers, the probability of quitting smoking through participation in the program and smoking‐attributable costs. The study results suggested that a best practice smoking cessation program could be a cost‐effective option. These findings can support and guide implementation of smoking cessation programs. Research on body image has repeatedly shown that elite athletes are at higher risk for body dissatisfaction and eating disorders. Competitive athletes in leanness-focused sports, such as rock climbing, have proven to be at an even greater risk. This study explored the experiences of ten rock climbers, between the age of 19 and 46, through semi-structured interviews to better understand how body image is experienced within the sport of rock climbing. In discussing body image, rock climbers identified four main themes: (1) climbing experiences, (2) health and fitness, (3) climbing body culture, and (4) body image and self-esteem. Results from this study provide a more complete picture of the body standards within rock climbing and its impact on participants within the sport. Biotic interactions underlie ecosystem structure and function, but predicting interaction outcomes is difficult. We tested the hypothesis that biotic interaction strength increases toward the equator, using a global experiment with model caterpillars to measure predation risk. Across an 11,660-kilometer latitudinal gradient spanning six continents, we found increasing predation toward the equator, with a parallel pattern of increasing predation toward lower elevations. Patterns across both latitude and elevationwere driven by arthropod predators,with no systematic trend in attack rates by birds or mammals. These matching gradients at global and regional scales suggest consistent drivers of biotic interaction strength, a finding that needs to be integrated into general theories of herbivory, community organization, and life-history evolution.
