Meta-analysis synthesizes individual research results on the same subject and provides information that indicates bottlenecks in research. Due to the massive production of data, integrative analyzes are necessary, presenting more consistent views of biological phenomena. Broad themes such as plants’ response to climate change have been the subject of meta-analyses since 1996, as there is a global concern about the effect of elevated CO\(_{2}\) on plants and forests. We propose using meta-analysis to compile existing data, including studies related to the effects of high CO\(_{2}\) on Brazilian biomes’ vegetation. For that, we found 36 articles on the theme after a systematic review. Physiological parameters such as photosynthesis, leaf area, and non-structural carbohydrates are essential to understand the plant’s responses to elevated CO\(_{2}\) using meta-analysis. However, these parameters are not present in a considerable portion of the literature, decreasing the statistical power of meta-analytical strategies. The meta-analysis of plants’ biological responses is usually performed with several species, although there are also studies with single species. The use of many species increases the variance of the effects, highlighting the need for multilevel modeling to consider the dependence among data on the same species. We discuss how to carry out studies considering the variables needed in future meta-analyses to contribute to better data integration relevant to national reports. In this way, we expect that meta-analytical strategies could be essential for national decision-making and complement global analyses such as those made by the IPCC.

Reproductive and pollination biology studies are crucial to understand processes of diversification in plants. The facultative apomictic orchid Zygopetalum mackayi comprises a potential model in the Neotropics to understand the role of asexuality in the reproductive success of plants. Adventive embryogenesis is the main mechanism behind the production of clonal embryos in Z. mackayi and it has been associated with polyembryony. Previous studies suggested all seeds (mono-/polyembryonic) to be of apomictic origin. If so, we expect to find no difference in seed viability from self- and cross-pollinations, considering monoembryonic and polyembryonic seeds. To test this prediction, we estimated how pollen origin affects fruit set and seed viability. We also investigated if reproduction is dependent on pollinators and described how pollination is achieved. We collected phenological and pollination data in one natural population and sampled five additional populations for studies of the reproductive system. To access seed viability, we stained seeds with a tetrazolium solution. Z. mackayi is a generalized food-deceptive species pollinated by Bombus pauloensis. This species is also dependent on pollinators for reproduction as individuals are unable to perform spontaneous self-pollination. Self- and cross-pollination treatments yielded mainly monoembryonic seeds, but crossed flowers produced more viable monoembryonic seeds than self-pollinated ones. Sexual reproduction is dominant in Z. mackayi because monoembryonic seeds are more frequent in both cross- and self-pollinated flowers and more viable when pollen comes from a different individual. Self-pollinated flowers set more polyembryonic seeds than crossed ones, although there were no differences in seed viability between treatments considering all types of seeds produced. We hypothesize that embryo abortion by inbreeding depression in self-pollinated flowers is compensated by apomictic reproduction in Z. mackayi, as polyembryonic seeds are a common outcome of apomixis. We propose polyploidy, not pollen limitation, is responsible for the evolution of apomixis in this orchid species.

Women underrepresentation in science has frequently been associated with women being less productive than men (i.e. the gender productivity gap), which may be explained by women having lower success rates, producing science of lower impact and/or suffering gender bias. By performing global meta-analyses, we show that there is a gender productivity gap mostly supported by a larger scientific production ascribed to men. However, women and men show similar success rates when the researchers´ work is directly evaluated (i.e. publishing articles). Men´s success rate is higher only in productivity proxies involving peer recognition (e.g. evaluation committees, academic positions). Men´s articles showed a tendency to have higher global impact but only if studies include self-citations. We detected gender bias against women in research fields where women are underrepresented (i.e. those different from Psychology). Historical numerical unbalance, socio-psychological aspects and cultural factors may influence differences in success rate, science impact and gender bias. Thus, the maintenance of a women-unfriendly academic and non-academic environment may perpetuate the gender productivity gap. Questions: Does the spatial association between isolated adult trees and understorey plants change along a gradient of sand dunes? Does this association depend on the life form of the understorey plant? Location: Coastal sand dunes, southeast Brazil. Methods: We recorded the occurrence of understorey plant species in 100 paired 0.25 m 2 plots under adult trees and in adjacent treeless sites along an environmental gradient from beach to inland. Occurrence probabilities were modelled as a function of the fixed variables of the presence of a neighbour, distance from the seashore and life form, and a random variable, the block (i.e. the pair of plots). Generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) were fitted in a backward step-wise procedure using Akaike’s information criterion (AIC) for model selection. Results: The occurrence of understorey plants was affected by the presence of an adult tree neighbour, but the effect varied with the life form of the understorey species. Positive spatial association was found between isolated adult neighbour and young trees, whereas a negative association was found for shrubs. Moreover, a neutral association was found for lianas, whereas for herbs the effect of the presence of an adult neighbour ranged from neutral to negative, depended on the subgroup considered. The strength of the negative association with forbs increased with distance from the seashore. However, for the other life forms, the associational pattern with adult trees did not change along the gradient. Conclusions: For most of the understorey life forms there is no evidence that the spatial association between isolated adult trees and understorey plants changes with the distance from the seashore, as predicted by the stress gradient hypothesis, a common hypothesis in the literature about facilitation in plant communities. Furthermore, the positive spatial association between isolated adult trees and young trees identified along the entire gradient studied indicates a positive feedback that explains the transition from open vegetation to forest in subtropical coastal dune environments.

Decomposition was studied in a reciprocal litter transplant experiment to examine the effects of forest type, litter quality and their interaction on leaf decomposition in four tropical forests in south-east Brazil. Litterbags were used to measure decomposition of leaves of one tree species from each forest type:Calophyllum brasiliensefrom restinga forest;Guapira oppositafrom Atlantic forest;Esenbeckia leiocarpafrom semi-deciduous forest; andCopaifera langsdorffiifrom cerradão. Decomposition rates in rain forests (Atlantic and restinga) were twice as fast as those in seasonal forests (semi-deciduous and cerradão), suggesting that intensity and distribution of precipitation are important predictors of decomposition rates at regional scales. Decomposition rates varied by species, in the following order:E. leiocarpa>C. langsdorffii>G. opposita>C. brasiliense. However, there was no correlation between decomposition rates and chemical litter quality parameters: C:N, C:P, lignin concentration and lignin:N. The interaction between forest type and litter quality was positive mainly becauseC. langsdorffiidecomposed faster than expected in its native forest. This is a potential indication of a decomposer's adaptation to specific substrates in a tropical forest. These findings suggest that besides climate, interactions between decomposers and plants might play an essential role in decomposition processes and it must be better understood.

The stress gradient hypothesis (SGH) postulates how the balance between plant competition and facilitation shifts along environmental gradients. Early formulations of the SGH predicted that facilitation should increase monotonically with stress. However, a recent theoretical refinement of the SGH postulates stronger facilitation under moderate stress, followed by a decreasing role of facilitation in the most severe environments. We conducted field experiments along the most severe part of a coastal dune gradient in southeast Brazil to test the effect of stress on the intensity and importance of the net interactions between two tree species. First, we compared the performance of distinct life stages of Ternstroemia brasiliensis in the presence and absence of Guapira opposita adults along a beach-to-inland gradient, a gradient of environmental severity. To test the effect of one stress factor in particular, we also manipulated water availability, a limiting resource due to the sandy soils. At the most severe part of the coastal gradient (i.e. closest to the seashore), both intensity and importance of the interaction between G. opposita and T. brasiliensis were negatively related to stress, with a pattern consistent across distinct life stages of the target species. However, the sign of the net interaction depended on the life stage of the target species. Our results provide empirical evidence that the role of facilitation tends to wane, leading to neutral or even negative net interactions between species as stress reaches its maximum, as predicted by the recent refinements of the SGH.

Aims The coastal Brazilian rainforest on white-sand (restinga) ranks among the most fragmented forest types in the tropics, owing to both the patchy distribution of sandy soils and widespread coastal development activities. Here we study the environmental and evolutionary determinants of a forest tree assemblage at a single restinga forest in Southeastern Brazil. We also explore the ability of competing hypotheses to explain the maintenance of species diversity in this forest type, which includes contrasting extremes of edaphic conditions associated with flooding stress. Methods The study was conducted in a white-sand forest permanent plot of 10.24 ha on the coastal plain of Southeastern Brazil. This plot was divided into 256 quadrats of 20×20 m, which were classified into two main edaphic habitats (flooded and drained). Trees with a diameter ≥1cm at breast height were identified. We assembled DNA sequence data for each of the 116 morphospecies recognized using two chloroplast markers (rbcL and matK). A phylogenetic tree was obtained using the maximum likelihood method, and a phylogenetic distance matrix was produced from an ultrametric tree. We analyzed similarity in floristic composition and structure between habitats and related them to cross-plot distances using permutation procedures. Null model torus shift simulations were performed to obtain a statistical significance level for habitat association for each species. The phylogenetic structure for the two habitats and for each 20×20 m quadrat was calculated using the mean phylogenetic distance weighted by species abundance and checked for significance using the standardized effect size generated by 5000 randomizations of phylogenetic tip labels. Important Findings Our results indicate that partitioning among edaphic habitats is important for explaining species distributions and coexistence in restinga forests. Species distributions within the plot were found to be non-random: there was greater floristic similarity within than between habitats, and >40% of the more abundant species were positively or negatively associated with at least one habitat. Patterns of habitat association were not independent of phylogenetic relatedness: the community was overdispersed with respect to space and habitat type. Closely related species tended to occur in different habitats, while neighboring trees tended to belong to more distantly related species. We conclude that habitat specialization is important for the coexistence of species in restinga forests and that habitat heterogeneity is therefore an essential factor in explaining the maintenance of diversity of this unique but fragile and threatened type of forest. © 2014 The Author.

A produção e a decomposição de serrapilheira são processos vitais nas florestas tropicais, uma vez que determinam a ciclagem de nutrientes. O processo de ciclagem de nutrientes pode ser alterado pela fragmentação florestal. A Floresta Atlântica é um dos biomas mais ameaçados mundialmente devido à ocupação humana nos últimos 500 anos. Este cenário resultou em fragmentos de diferentes tamanhos, idades e estádios de regeneração. Para explorar as diferenças na produção de serrapilheira e na decomposição foliar de acordo com o estádio sucessional da floresta, comparamos seis fragmentos florestais em três diferentes estádios sucessionais e uma área de floresta primária no Planalto Atlântico de São Paulo, Brasil. Coletamos a serrapilheira mensalmente de novembro de 2008 a outubro de 2009. Utilizamos bolsas de confinamento de serrapilheira para calcular a taxa de decomposição foliar de uma espécie exótica, Tipuana tipu (Fabaceae), durante o mesmo período de coleta da serrapilheira. A deposição de serrapilheira foi maior na área de estádio sucessional mais inicial. Esse padrão pode estar relacionado com as características estruturais dos fragmentos florestais, especialmente com a maior abundância de espécies pioneiras, que possuem uma maior produtividade e são espécies típicas de fragmentos em estádios iniciais de sucessão. Por outro lado, não encontramos diferenças significativas nas taxas de decomposição entre as áreas estudadas, o que pode ocorrer devido à rápida estabilização do ambiente de decomposição (efeito combinado das condições microclimáticas e das atividades dos decompositores). Estes resultados indicam que o processo de decomposição foliar foi restabelecido aos níveis das florestas maduras após algumas décadas de regeneração, embora a produção de serrapilheira ainda não tenha sido totalmente restaurada. Este estudo destaca a importância das florestas secundárias em um cenário regional de restauração de processos ecossistêmicos.

Nas últimas duas décadas estudos empíricos têm demonstrado a importância da facilitação entre plantas, especialmente sob condições ambientais severas. Tal constatação inspirou a proposição da hipótese do gradiente de estresse (HGE), um modelo conceitual que prediz que a freqüência relativa entre facilitação e competição deve variar inversarmente ao longo de um gradiente de estresse, sendo a facilitação mais comum sob condições extremamente severas. As restingas (ou planícies costeiras arenosas) são ambientes caracterizados por condições ambientais limitantes para o desenvolvimento das plantas, fazendo-se então um ambiente propício para o predomínio de facilitação. Além disso, o gradiente de intensidade de estresse e perturbação relacionado à distância do mar faz ainda deste ecossistema um modelo ideal para testar a HGE. O objetivo geral desta tese foi estudar facilitação entre plantas de restinga através dos seguintes objetivos específicos: i) Apresentar uma revisão sistemática dos trabalhos já publicados sobre facilitação entre plantas de restinga em escala mundial, assim como investigar, através de meta-análise, que fatores influenciam a presença e intensidade da facilitação entre plantas; ii) Testar se os padrões de associação espacial entre árvores adultas isoladas e plantas de distintas formas de vida se alteram ao longo de um gradiente ambiental praia-interior, conforme esperado pela HGE; iii) Testar a HGE através de experimentos de campo envolvendo transplante da espécie potencialmente beneficiada, assim como manipulação de recurso limitante ao longo do gradiente praia-interior; iv) Testar se o sombreamento é um mecanismo de facilitação na restinga. Para os testes empíricos (objetivos ii-iv), as observações e experimentos foram realizados em um gradiente de restinga arbustiva do Parque Estadual da Ilha do Cardoso (PEIC) localizado em Cananéia, São Paulo, Brasil. Os resultados indicaram que: i) diversas condições e aspectos da facilitação entre plantas de planícies costeiras têm sido pouco exploradas, como por exemplo, há poucos estudos nas regiões tropicais e poucos estudos que consideraram estágios de vida de semente ou de adultos da espécie alvo da interação. Dentre os estudos publicados, fatores como precipitação, região geográfica e estágio de vida da planta alvo definitivamente influenciam a existência e magnitude da facilitação entre plantas de restinga; ii) para a maioria das formas de vida, o padrão de associação espacial com árvores adultas não se altera ao longo do gradiente ambiental conforme predito pela HGE. Apenas árvores jovens apresentam associação espacial positiva com árvores adultas, o que sugere efeito de planta-berçário entre árvores da restinga arbustiva; iii) tanto a intensidade quanto a importância da interação entre árvores foram negativamente relacionadas ao estresse, rejeitando então a proposição clássica da HGE. Além disso, o sinal da interação foi dependente do estágio de vida da espécie alvo, uma vez que a presença do adulto vizinho foi predominantemente negativa sobre o estágio de semente mas positiva sobre a sobrevivência das plântulas; iv) o efeito de planta-berçário entre árvores da restinga é, pelo menos parcialmente, explicado pelo sombreamento gerado pela copa da espécie facilitadora. Dessa forma, concluimos que a facilitação via sombreamento é uma interação relevante entre árvores adultas e jovens na restinga. Entretanto, ao contrário do previsto pela HGE, o efeito de planta-berçário tende a ser mais intenso em condições ambientais mais amenas. Estes resultados sugerem a existência de um ciclo de retroalimentação positiva gerado a partir do estabelecimento das primeiras árvores isoladas. Este ciclo positivo apresenta implicações importantes para a compreensão da organização estrutural da vegetação da restinga arbustiva, em que moitas de espécies lenhosas estão distribuídas em uma matriz predominantemente herbácea. Adicionalmente, a facilitação entre árvores e sua dependência em relação às condições ambientais locais devem ser mecanismos essenciais para explicar o gradiente de fisionomias vegetacionais sobre os cordões arenosos, a qual inicia-se em uma vegetação aberta e termina em uma floresta, assim como para entender a dinâmica temporal desta vegetação ao longo do tempo. Por fim, nossos resultados também apresentam implicações práticas, relacionadas ao uso potencial de plantas-berçário e mímicos de sombra como técnicas de manejo para aumentar o estabelecimento de mudas transplantadas em projetos de restauração de restingas arbustivo-arbóreas. In the last two decades, empirical studies have shown the importance of plant interaction, especially under harsh environmental conditions. These observations led to the proposition of the stress gradient hypothesis (SGH), a conceptual model predicting that the relative frequency of facilitation and competition will vary inversely across gradients of stress, with facilitation being the dominant interaction under highly stressful conditions. Coastal dunes (known as restinga in Brazil) are environments with limiting conditions for plant performance, which makes them suitable for facilitation predominance among plant interactions. Furthermore, there is a gradient of stress and disturbance related to the presence of the sea, making this environment an ideal model to test the SGH. The general goal of this thesis was to study plant facilitation in coastal dunes with the following specific objectives: i) to perform a systematic review of published studies on plant facilitation in costal dunes around the world as well as to investigate, using a meta-analysis approach, factors that affect the existence and magnitude of plant facilitation; ii) to test if spatial association between isolated adult trees and understory plants of distinct life forms changes along a beach-to-inland gradient, as expected by the SGH; iii) to test the SGH through field experiments involving target species transplantation coupled with manipulation of limiting resource along a beach-to-inland gradient; iv) to test if shading is a facilitation mechanism in coastal dunes. The empirical tests (objectives ii-iv) were conducted in an open scrub coastal dune located at Ilha do Cardoso State Park, Cananéia, São Paulo, Brazil. Our results indicate that: i) several aspects and conditions of plant facilitation in coastal dunes have been little studied. For instance, few studies were conducted in tropical regions and few of them studied the effect of neighbor presence on seed and adult life stage of the target species. Precipitation, geographic region and target life stage affect the existence and magnitude of plant facilitation; ii) For most of the understory life forms, the spatial association between adult trees and understor plants do not change along the environmental gradient as predicted by the SGH. Among all life forms, only young trees were positively associated with adult trees, suggesting a nurse plant effect among trees in coastal dunes; iii) Both intensity and importance of the interaction among trees were negatively related to stress, rejecting the classic proposition of the SGH. Furthermore, the signal of the net interaction depends on the life stage of the target species since the adult neighbor had mostly negative effects on target species seeds but positive effects on seedlings survival; iv) The nurse plant effect among trees was, at least partly, due to the shading provided by the facilitator crown. Overall, we concluded that facilitation driven by shade is a relevant interaction between adult and young trees in the studied coastal dune. However, contrary to what was expected by the early propositions of the SGH, the observed nurse plant effect tends to be more intense under mild conditions. Our results suggest a positive feedback relationship started with the establishment of the first isolated trees. This positive feedback has important implications to understand the vegetation organization on open scrub vegetation, where patches of woody species are scattered in a matrix of herbaceous plants. Furthermore, the facilitation between trees and their dependency on local environmental conditions could be fundamental to explain the gradient of vegetation physiognomies from open vegetation to forest observed along the beach-to-inland gradient, as well as to understand the dynamics of this vegetation over time. Finally, our results also have practical implications, highlighting the potential use of nurse plants and artificial shade as techniques to restore shrubland or forest physiognomies in coastal dunes.

We examined the effects of soil mesofauna and the litter decomposition environment (above and belowground) on leaf decomposition rates in three forest types in southeastern Brazil. To estimate decomposition experimentally, we used litterbags with a standard substrate in a full-factorial experimental design. We used model selection to compare three decomposition models and also to infer the importance of forest type, decomposition environment, mesofauna, and their interactions on the decomposition process. Rather than the frequently used simple and double-exponential models, the best model to describe our dataset was the exponential deceleration model, which assumed a single organic compartment with an exponential decrease of the decomposition rate. Decomposition was higher in the wet than in the seasonal forest, and the differences between forest types were stronger aboveground. Regarding litter decomposition environment, decomposition was predominantly higher below than aboveground, but the magnitude of this effect was higher in the seasonal than in wet forests. Mesofauna exclusion treatments had slower decomposition, except aboveground into the Semi-deciduous Forest, where the mesofauna presence did not affect decomposition. Furthermore, the effect of mesofauna was stronger in the wet forests and belowground. Overall, our results suggest that, in a regional scale, both decomposers activity and the positive effect of soil mesofauna in decomposition are constrained by abiotic factors, such as moisture conditions.

Litter decomposition recycles nutrients and causes large fluxes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It is typically assumed that climate, litter quality and decomposer communities determine litter decay rates, yet few comparative studies have examined their relative contributions in tropical forests. We used a short‐term litterbag experiment to quantify the effects of litter quality, placement and mesofaunal exclusion on decomposition in 23 tropical forests in 14 countries. Annual precipitation varied among sites (760–5797 mm). At each site, two standard substrates (Raphia farinifera and Laurus nobilis) were decomposed in fine‐ and coarse‐mesh litterbags both above and below ground for approximately 1 year. Decomposition was rapid, with >95% mass loss within a year at most sites. Litter quality, placement and mesofaunal exclusion all independently affected decomposition, but the magnitude depended upon site. Both the average decomposition rate at each site and the ratio of above‐ to below‐ground decay increased linearly with annual precipitation, explaining 60–65% of among‐site variation. Excluding mesofauna had the largest impact on decomposition, reducing decomposition rates by half on average, but the magnitude of decrease was largely independent of climate. This suggests that the decomposer community might play an important role in explaining patterns of decomposition among sites. Which litter type decomposed fastest varied by site, but was not related to climate. Synthesis. A key goal of ecology is to identify general patterns across ecological communities, as well as relevant site‐specific details to understand local dynamics. Our pan‐tropical study shows that certain aspects of decomposition, including average decomposition rates and the ratio of above‐ to below‐ground decomposition are highly correlated with a simple climatic index: mean annual precipitation. However, we found no relationship between precipitation and effects of mesofaunal exclusion or litter type, suggesting that site‐specific details may also be required to understand how these factors affect decomposition at local scales. Coastal dunes are both abiotically stressful and frequently disturbed systems. Facilitation has been documented, but the evidence to date has not been synthesized. We did a systematic review with meta-analysis to highlight general research gaps in the study of plant interactions in coastal dunes and examine if regional and local factors influence the magnitude of facilitation in these systems. the 32 studies included in the systematic review were done in coastal dunes located in 13 countries around the world but the majority was in the temperate zone (63%). Most of the studies adopt only an observational approach to make inferences about facilitative interactions, whereas only 28% of the studies used both observational and experimental approaches. Among the factors we tested, only geographic region mediates the occurrence of facilitation more broadly in coastal dune systems. the presence of a neighbor positively influenced growth and survival in the tropics, whereas in temperate and subartic regions the effect was neutral for both response variables. We found no evidence that climatic and local factors, such as life-form and life stage of interacting plants, affect the magnitude of facilitation in coastal dunes. Overall, conclusions about plant facilitation in coastal dunes depend on the response variable measured and, more broadly, on the geographic region examined. However, the high variability and the limited number of studies, especially in tropical region, indicate we need to be cautious in the generalization of the conclusions. Anyway, coastal dunes provide an important means to explore topical issues in facilitation research including context dependency, local versus regional drivers of community structure, and the importance of gradients in shaping the outcome of net interactions. A atividade de decomposição constitui-se em importante indicador do padrão funcional dos ecossistemas, pois controla processos básicos relacionados à disponibilidade de nutrientes e produtividade. Salienta-se a importância das características climáticas, edáficas, da qualidade da serapilheira e da fauna do solo como determinantes no processo de decomposição. No entanto, a importância de cada um destes fatores varia em escalas de tempo e espaço. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a importância de alguns fatores determinantes na decomposição em trechos representativos dos principais ecossistemas florestais do Estado de São Paulo. Para tanto foram conduzidos dois experimentos independentes. O primeiro, aqui denominado Experimento Exóticas, examinou os efeitos do tipo florestal e da fauna do solo sobre a decomposição de folhas de uma espécie exótica (Laurus nobilis L.) em duas florestas úmidas (Floresta de Restinga do Parque Estadual da Ilha do Cardoso e Floresta Atlântica de Encosta do Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho) e uma floresta estacional (Floresta Estacional Semidecidual da Estação Ecológica de Caetetus). Os efeitos destes fatores foram testados em duas situações: acima e abaixo da superfície simulando então o ambiente de decomposição de folhas e raízes respectivamente. O tipo florestal apresenta efeito superior à fauna acima da superfície, enquanto abaixo apenas o efeito da fauna é significativo. Esses resultados indicam que a hierarquia dos fatores determinantes na decomposição difere para folhas e raízes. Se por um lado a decomposição de folhas é muito mais susceptível às mudanças climáticas do que a de raízes, por outro, alterações na comunidade afetam a decomposição em ambas as condições. Acima da superfície, a fauna apresentou efeito significativo apenas na Floresta Atlântica de Encosta, sendo essencial na diferenciação das duas florestas úmidas. Abaixo da superfície e na ausência da fauna, a porcentagem de massa remanescente foi muito similar nas três florestas. No entanto, diferenças entre as florestas, na presença da fauna, tornam-se aparentes sugerindo que há contribuição específica da fauna na decomposição de raízes destas florestas. A Floresta de Restinga apresentou o efeito mais pronunciado da fauna abaixo do solo. Esses resultados indicam que a fauna é um fator de notável importância na determinação da decomposição de raízes, particularmente em florestas tropicais úmidas arenosas. Outro experimento, aqui denominado Experimento Nativas, foi desenvolvido para avaliar o efeito do substrato e da formação florestal na decomposição de folhas de quatro espécies nativas em trechos das quatro principais formações florestais do Estado de São Paulo. Para tanto, o experimento foi desenvolvido nos três trechos florestais do experimento Exóticas incluindo ainda o Cerradão da Estação Ecológica de Assis. Foi escolhida uma espécie de árvore, em cada um dos tipos florestais, para que suas folhas fossem usadas como substrato nas bolsas de serapilheira. Tipo florestal e substrato demonstraram efeito significativo sobre a quantidade de massa remanescente ao longo do experimento. A maior parte das espécies sofreu maiores perdas na Floresta Atlântica, seguida da Floresta de Restinga, Floresta Estacional e Cerradão. Esses resultados sugerem que o total de precipitação associado a sua distribuição são importantes determinantes no processo de decomposição, de forma que as duas florestas mais úmidas apresentam, em média, taxas de decomposição duas vezes maiores do que as duas florestas estacionais. As demais diferenças encontradas entre as formações florestais devem ser explicadas por características edáficas e bióticas. Em relação ao efeito das espécies, observaram-se as maiores perda de massa em Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl., seguida de Copaifera langsdorfii Desf., Guapira opposita Vell. e Calophyllum brasiliensis Camb.. Os parâmetros químicos só mostram correlação negativa significativa com as taxas de decomposição quando G. opposita é excluída da análise. Neste caso a porcentagem de lignina foi o parâmetro que apresentou melhor correlação (r2= 0,59). Apesar dos padrões gerais apresentados acima, a interação entre tipo florestal e substrato evidencia algumas variações, que se relacionam principalmente ao aumento relativo na perda de massa de C. langsdorfii em sua área de origem, o Cerradão. Quando comparadas as taxas de decomposição (k) encontradas na Floresta Estacional e no Cerradão, C. langsdorfii apresenta decaimento 40% maior no Cerradão, enquanto as demais espécies apresentam, em média, taxas 28% menores no Cerradão do que na Estacional. Esses resultados sugerem estreita correlação entre a comunidade decompositora e a serapilheira local. O estudo do processo de decomposição, reconhecendo seus fatores determinantes e a variação na hierarquia desses fatores em diferentes condições ambientais, como apresentado nesse trabalho, é de fundamental importância, não só para o entendimento dos ecossistemas florestais de São Paulo, mas para o planejamento de atividades de manejo, restauração e conservação. Composition is an important indicator of functional patterns of ecosystems, as it controls basic processes related to the availability of nutrients and to ecosystem productivity. Climatic and edaphic conditions and the quality of the litter and soil fauna as determining factors are of particular importance in the process of decomposition. The significance of each one of these varies with spatial and temporal scale. The objective of this work was to evaluate the importance of certain determining factors of decomposition in sites representing the main forest ecosystems of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. To accomplish this, two independent experiments were conducted. The first, denoted here as the “Exotics" experiment, was to examine the effects of the type of forest and the soil fauna on the decomposition of leaves of an exotic species (Laurus nobilis L.) in two humid forests (Restinga Forest of the Parque Estadual da Ilha do Cardoso e Atlantic Forest of the Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho) and a seasonal forest (Semideciduous Forest of the Estação Ecológica de Caetetus). The effects of these factors were tested above and belowground, to simulate the environment of decomposition among leaves and roots respectively. The type of forest had a significant effect over fauna above the surface, while below the surface, only fauna had significant effect. These results indicate that the hierarchy of determining factors in decomposition differs between leaves and roots. If on the one hand decomposition in leaves is much more susceptible to variation in climate than are roots, on the other hand changes in the soil fauna affect decomposition in both environments. Above the surface, fauna had a significant effect only in the Atlantic Forest, emphasizing the difference between two humid forests. Under the surface, and in the absence of fauna, the percentage of remaining biomass was very similar in the three forests. Notwithstanding differences in the forests, the presence of fauna was apparent, suggesting that there is a specific contribution of fauna in decomposition among roots in these forests. The Restinga Forest produced the most pronounced effect of fauna below the soil surface. These results indicate that fauna is a factor of notable importance in the decomposition of roots, especially in humid sandy tropical forests. The other experiment, here called the “Native" experiment, was developed to evaluate the effects of the substrate and the forest type on the decomposition of leaves of four native species in sites of the four major forest types in São Paulo state. The experiment was conducted in the same three forest sites as the “Exotics" experiment, including the Cerradão da Estação Ecológica de Assis. A tree species was chosen in each forest type, the leaves of which were used as substrate for the litter bags. The type of forest and the substrate demonstrated a significantly greater effect on the quantity of remaining mass throughout the experiment. The majority of the species suffered greater losses in the Atlantic Forest, followed by the Restinga Forest, the Semideciduous Forest, and the Cerradão. These results suggest that the total associated precipitation and its distribution are important determinants in the process of decomposition. As such, the two most humid forests show, on average, decomposition rates twice as great as the two seasonal forests. The rest of the differences encountered between forest types can be explained by edaphic and biotic factors. With respect to the effect of the species, the greatest biomass losses were observed in Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl., followed by Copaifera langsdorfii Desf., Guapira opposita Vell. and Calophyllum brasiliensis Camb. Chemical parameters only show significant negative correlation with decomposition rates when G. opposita is excluded from the analysis. In this case the percentage of lignin was the parameter that showed the greatest correlation (r2= 0,59). In spite of the general patterns presented above, the interaction between forest type and substrate showed some variation, principally related to the loss of mass of C. langsdorfii in its native habitat, the Cerradão. Comparing decomposition rates (k) found in the Semideciduous Forest and Cerradão, C. langsdorfii shows a decrease of 40% more in the Cerradão, while the other species show, on average rates 28% lower in the Cerradão than in the Semideciduous Forest. These results suggest a strict correlation between the decomposition community and the local litter. Understanding processes of decomposition, is of fundamental importance and includes recognizing the determining factors and the variation in the importance of these factors under different environmental conditions, as presented in this study. This is true not only for our understanding of the forest ecosystems of São Paulo, but also for management planning, restoration, and conservation.

A concentração de dióxido de carbono (CO2) na atmosfera aumentou desde a revolução industrial até a atualidade. O aumento de CO2 na atmosfera pode resultar em alterações fisiológicas e bioquímicas, que podem influenciar no crescimento das plantas e mudar o metabolismo dos carboidratos. O Brasil é a nação tropical mais rica em termos de armazenamento de carbono florestal e detentora da maior biodiversidade do planeta. Contudo, trabalhos sobre o efeito do elevado CO2 (eCO2) nas plantas em clima neotropical, em especial do Brasil, não têm sido incluídos em meta-análises globais. Portanto, este trabalho tem como objetivo sintetizar quantitativamente o conhecimento atual sobre o efeito de eCO2 na vegetação brasileira em experimentos com CO2 realizados no Brasil. Este trabalho está dividido em dois capítulos. O Capítulo I discute a importância da meta-análise em si e seu valor para compreender as respostas das plantas ao eCO2. O Capítulo II apresenta uma meta-análise de estudos efetuados com plantas no Brasil em eCO2. O primeiro capítulo revisa os eventos históricos a respeito da evolução do conhecimento sobre as mudanças climáticas globais no planeta e aponta a meta-análise como ferramenta de grande importância para compreender a fisiologia das plantas em resposta ao aumento de CO2. Propomos neste trabalho o uso de meta-análise para compilar os dados existentes sobre mudanças climáticas. Portanto, entendemos que a meta-análise é uma metodologia estatisticamente rigorosa para integrar resultados de pesquisas primárias sobre o efeito das mudanças climáticas na vegetação. Identificamos que o número de algumas variáveis (C, N e área foliar) comumente medidas em experimentos que analisam as respostas das plantas às mudanças climáticas não estão presentes em número suficiente de estudos para realizar uma meta-análise e discutimos como realizar estudos considerando as variáveis necessárias em futuras meta-análises. A meta-análise do segundo capítulo inclui 36 trabalhos, selecionados a partir de uma revisão sistemática, com experimentos de Câmaras de Topo Aberto (OTC) ou Free-air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) que pesquisaram o efeito do eCO2 em plantas. Nossa meta-análise verificou que a exposição das plantas ao eCO2 resultou no aumento médio significativo da biomassa (+30%), na taxa de assimilação líquida de CO2 (+49%), na eficiência fotossintética do uso da água (+116%), aumento dos níveis de açúcares solúveis totais nas folhas (+7%), na concentração de amido foliar (+58%) e diminuição da condutância estomática (-23%). Não houve mudança nas respostas na taxa de transpiração (E), taxa de CO2 intercelular por CO2 atmosférico (Ci/Ca), taxa máxima de transporte de elétrons (Jmax) e velocidade máxima de carboxilação da enzima Rubisco (Vcmax) em plantas expostas ao eCO2. O hábito de vida das espécies alterou significativamente a resposta da biomassa em árvores e herbáceas, sendo que árvores jovens acumulam mais biomassa do que as herbáceas quando expostas ao eCO2. Em ambos os capítulos, destacamos a importância de que mais estudos sejam realizados com espécies nativas e cultivadas em clima neotropical para melhorar nossa compreensão preditiva das respostas das plantas tropicais ao eCO2. The concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has increased since the industrial revolution to the present. The increase in CO2 in the atmosphere can result in physiological, biochemical changes. In addition to influencing plant growth and changing carbohydrate metabolism. Brazil is the richest tropical nation in terms of forest carbon storage and the greatest biodiversity on the planet. However, studies on the effect of high CO2 (eCO2) on plants in the Neotropical climate, especially in Brazil, have not been included in global meta-analyzes. Therefore, this work aims to quantitatively synthesize current knowledge about the effect of eCO2 on Brazilian vegetation in experiments with CO2 carried out in Brazil. This work is divided into two chapters. Chapter I discusses the importance of meta-analysis itself and its value for understanding plant responses to eCO2; Chapter II presents a meta-analysis of studies carried out with plants in Brazil in eCO2. The first chapter reviews historical events regarding the evolution of knowledge about global climate changes on the planet and points to meta-analysis as a tool of great importance to understand the physiology of plants in response to the increase in CO2. In this work, we propose the use of meta-analysis to compile the existing data on climate change. Therefore, we found that the meta-analysis was a statistically rigorous methodology for integrating results of primary research on the effect of climate change on vegetation. We found that the number of some variables (C, N and leaf area) commonly measured in experiments that analyze plant responses to climate change are not present in a sufficient number of studies to perform a meta-analysis. We discussed how to conduct studies considering the variables needed in futue meta-analyzes. The second chapter meta-analysis includes 36 studies, based on a systematic review, with Open Top Chambers (OTC) or Free-air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiments that investigated the effect of eCO2 on plants. Our meta-analysis found that plant exposure to eCO2 resulted in a significant average increase in biomass (+ 30%), in the net CO2 assimilation rate (+ 49%), instantaneous leaf water use efficiency (+ 116%), increased levels of total soluble sugars (+ 7%), starch concentration (+ 58%) and decreased stomatal conductance(-23%). Significant changes have not been observed in the responses in the transpiration rate (E), ratio of intercellular to atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca), maximum rate of electron transport (Jmax), and maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax) in plants exposed to the eCO2. The species\' habit of life significantly altered the response of biomass in trees and herbaceous, with young trees accumulating more biomass than herbaceous when exposed to eCO2. In both chapters, we highlight the importance of further studies being carried out with native species and cultivated in a neotropical climate to improve our predictive understanding of the responses of tropical plants to eCO2.

No início, a teoria de seleção sexual baseava-se somente em episódios pré-acasalamento de competição por parceiros sexuais. Em alguns sistemas de acasalamento, machos tentam monopolizar parceiras através da defesa de recursos usados pelas fêmeas ou guardando diretamente as fêmeas. Em outros sistemas de acasalamento, esse comportamento de monopolização não existe e as táticas dos machos baseiam-se principalmente em achar ou cortejar fêmeas. Em todos cenários, esperava-se usualmente que fêmeas fossem o sexo criterioso na escolha e acasalassem poucas vezes. Contudo, análises genéticas modernas revelaram que frequentemente fêmeas acasalam com diferentes parceiros sexuais, o que permite a ocorrência de episódios de seleção sexual pós-acasalamento, como escolha críptica da fêmea e competição espermática. Agora, para melhor entender processos de seleção sexual, é necessário estimar seleção sexual em diferentes sistemas de acasalamento, integrando episódios de seleção pré e pós-acasalamento. Dessa forma, apresentamos aqui três meta-análises que integram episódios de seleção pré e pós-acasalamento em animais e combinam estimativas de seleção baseadas em indivíduos e em atributos desses indivíduos. No Capítulo 1, mostramos que medidas de sucesso de acasalamento inferidas a partir de testes genéticos produzem estimativas maiores da oportunidade para seleção sexual pré-acasalamento (Is) do que medidas diretas de sucesso de acasalamento. Isso mostra que estimativas genéticas de sucesso de acasalamento não devem ser usadas para calcular-se Is e que elas são mais propícias para o cálculo da oportunidade para seleção sexual pós-acasalamento. Dessa forma, propomos um novo índice de seleção pós-acasalamento: a oportunidade para seleção por fertilização. Sobretudo, nossos resultados mostram também que a oportunidade para seleção sexual pós-acasalamento é comum em animais. No Capítulo 2, mostramos que, quando o comportamento de monopolização ocorre, fêmeas lidam com menor oportunidade para seleção sexual pré-acasalamento e machos lidam com maior oportunidade para seleção sexual pré-acasalamento. Contudo, para ambos sexos, a oportunidade de seleção por fertilização e a oportunidade de seleção total não diferem de acordo com a ocorrência do comportamento de monopolização. Isso mostra que: (i) machos são bem sucedidos em monopolizar fêmeas durante eventos pré-acasalamento, mas fêmeas não são monopolizadas quando se analisa a integralidade dos eventos reprodutivos; (ii) poliandria é comum em animais; e (iii) escolha críptica da fêmea e competição espermática são forças seletivas efetivas. No Capítulo 3, demonstramos pela primeira vez que fêmeas e machos de maior tamanho corporal produzem mais filhotes, corroborando uma antiga hipótese de Charles Darwin sobre a evolução de tamanho corporal em fêmeas. Apesar das vantagens em ser grande quando comportamento de monopolização ocorre, nós também mostramos que indivíduos grandes são igualmente bem sucedidos em diferentes sistemas de acasalamento. Por fim, mostramos que investir em atributos envolvidos em fertilização aumenta o sucesso reprodutivo de machos, demonstrando novamente a relevância de episódios de seleção sexual pós-acasalamento. The theory of sexual selection was initially based only on pre-mating episodes of intrasexual competition for sexual partners. In some mating systems, males try to monopolize females by guarding them or by defending resource(s) used by females. In other mating systems, such monopolization behavior is absent and male mating tactics are mainly based on finding or courting females. In all scenarios, females were usually expected to be the choosy sex and mate just a few times. However, modern genetic paternity analyses revealed that females frequently mate with different partners, leading to post-mating episodes of sexual selection, such as cryptic female choice and sperm competition. To better understand sexual selection processes, it is necessary to estimate sexual selection in different mating systems, integrating pre- and post-mating episodes of selection. Therefore, here we present three hierarchical meta-analyses that integrate pre- and post-mating selection episodes across animals, and combine individual-based and trait-based estimates of sexual selection. In Chapter 1, we show that mating success measures inferred from genetic analyses produce higher estimates of the opportunity for pre-mating sexual selection (Is) than measures of actual mating success. This shows that genetic estimates of mating success should not be used to calculate Is and that they would be better employed to estimate the opportunity for post-mating sexual selection. Therefore, we propose a new post-mating selection index: the opportunity for fertilization selection. More importantly, our results show that the opportunity for post-mating sexual selection is ubiquitous among animals. In Chapter 2, we show that, when monopolization behavior occurs, females face a lower opportunity for pre-mating sexual selection and males face a higher opportunity for pre-mating sexual selection. However, for both sexes, the opportunity for fertilization selection and the opportunity for selection do not differ according to the occurrence of monopolization behavior. This shows that: (i) males succeed in economically monopolizing females during pre-mating events, but females are not monopolized by males when we look at the whole reproductive process; (ii) polyandry is ubiquitous among animals; and (iii) cryptic female choice and sperm competition are effective selective forces. In Chapter 3, we demonstrate for the first time that larger females and males sire more offspring, corroborating a long-standing Darwinian hypothesis on the evolution of female body size. Despite the advantages of being larger when monopolization behavior occurs, we also show that large individuals are equally successful in different mating systems. Finally, we show that investing in fertilization-related traits results in higher fitness for males, demonstrating again the relevance of post-mating sexual selection.

Plants established next to other plants may have their performance positively or negatively affected by their neighbors, which characterizes interactions of facilitation and competiton, respectively. Facilitation and competition, however, may occur simultaneously and understanding which one predominates in pairwise interactions under different ecological contexts is important to comprehend the structure of plant communities. According to the stress-gradient hypothesis (SGH), facilitation is expected to prevail in more severe environments, but the outcome of interactions may change depending on features of interacting individuals, such as life form and ontogenetic stages. As harsh conditions and high diversity of plant life-forms are characteristic of coastal dunes, the amount of studies about plant interactions has been rapidly increasing in these ecosystems, with apparent divergent conclusions. However, until now, there is not a systematic and quantitative synthesis about the factors affecting the net outcome of facilitation and competition in these ecosystems. We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the effects of environmental stress and the simultaneous influence of plant life form and ontogenetic stage on the outcome of facilitation and competition in coastal dunes around the world. We used four performance measures to estimate the outcome of interactions: abundance, survival, growth, and reproduction. Contrary to what was expected by SGH, we found that negative impacts of neighbors on plant reproduction increase towards more arid conditions, but this effect was not observed for other performance measures. Our results also indicate that woody neighbors facilitate the survival of woody seedlings and the reproduction of herbs, while herbaceous neighbors facilitate the growth of other herbaceous plants. Overall, the outcome of plant interactions in coastal dunes depends on the performance variable measured and on both environmental conditions and plant features, indicating an interaction between these factors. Such interaction and different mechanisms underlying facilitation and competition should be more investigated in the future. The global scale of our meta-analysis supports generalization of important processes of succession and conservation in coastal dunes. Benefits of woody neighbors to the survival of woody seedlings corroborate the concept of successional feedbacks in the beach-inland physiognomic gradient, and our results reinforce the use of nurse plants in coastal dunes as a valuable tool to restoration of these endangered ecoystems Plantas estabelecidas nas proximidades de outras plantas podem ter sua performance afetada positiva ou negativamente por seus vizinhos, caracterizando, respectivamente, interações de facilitação e competição. Considerando que ambas as interações podem ocorrer de forma simultânea, compreender o predomínio de cada uma delas em diferentes contextos ecológicos é fundamental para o entendimento da estrutura de comunidades vegetais. De acordo com a hipótese do gradiente de estresse (HGE), a facilitação tende a predominar em ambientes mais severos, mas o balanço das interações depende ainda das características dos indivíduos envolvidos, como forma de vida e estágio ontogenético. Como condições ambientais severas e alta diversidade de formas de vida vegetais são características de planícies costeiras, o número de estudos investigando interações entre plantas tem aumentado rapidamente nesses ambientes, com conclusões aparentemente divergentes. No entanto, ainda não há uma síntese sistemática e quantitativa dos fatores que afetam o balanço entre facilitação e competição nesses ecossistemas. Nós realizamos uma meta-análise em escala global para investigar os efeitos do estresse ambiental e a influência simultânea da forma de vida e do estágio ontogenético das plantas sobre o balanço entre facilitação e competição em planícies costeiras. Utilizamos quatro variáveis de performance para estimar o balanço de interações: abundância, sobrevivência, crescimento e reprodução. Ao contrário do predito pela HGE, encontramos que impactos negativos de plantas vizinhas sobre a reprodução de outras plantas aumentam com a aridez do ambiente, mas que esse efeito não é observado para outras variáveis de performance. Nossos resultados também mostram que vizinhos lenhosos facilitam a sobrevivência de plântulas lenhosas e a reprodução de plantas herbáceas, enquanto vizinhos herbáceos facilitam o crescimento de outras herbáceas. De modo geral, o balanço das interações depende da variável de performance medida e tanto de condições ambientais quanto de características das plantas, indicando que esses fatores interagem. Tal interação e os diferentes mecanismos subjacentes à facilitação e à competição devem ser melhor investigados no futuro. A maior sobrevivência de plântulas lenhosas na presença de vizinhos lenhosos corrobora a ideia de retroalimentação positiva no processo sucessional que caracteriza o gradiente fisionômico da praia ao interior. Nossos resultados também reforçam o potencial do uso de plantas-berçários como ferramenta para restauração de planícies costeiras degradadas

A decomposição de serapilheira é um processo fundamental para a ciclagem de nutrientes e a manutenção da fertilidade dos solos em florestas tropicais. Além disso, contribui com os fluxos de carbono para a atmosfera, sendo constantemente discutida no âmbito das mudanças climáticas globais. Dentre os fatores que influenciam na sua dinâmica, o local de origem das espécies vegetais, a qualidade nutricional da serapilheira e a comunidade decompositora do solo tem recebido destaque. Interações entre plantas e decompositores que resultam em uma maior decomposição no local de origem das espécies vegetais em relação a um local externo são denominadas \"home field advantage\" (HFA). O presente estudo teve como objetivos investigar a ocorrência do HFA, bem como a influência das interações entre o local de origem das espécies vegetais, os decompositores do solo e a qualidade nutricional do material vegetal na decomposição de serapilheira em áreas de Floresta Ombrófila Densa Atlântica de terras baixas e montana localizadas no litoral norte do estado de São Paulo. Para isso foi realizado um experimento de decomposição com permuta de material foliar entre as florestas de terras baixas e montana com duração de 250 dias, utilizando folhas senescentes da espécie Rustia formosa, proveniente da floresta de terras baixas, e Licania hoehnei, proveniente da floresta montana, e litter bags com diferentes aberturas de malha para controlar a inclusão exclusão da meso e macro fauna do solo. Também foram quantificadas as concentrações de nutrientes, compostos orgânicos e composição isotópica para determinação da qualidade inicial das serapilheiras e sua dinâmica durante a decomposição. As diferenças na qualidade inicial das espécies não causou diferenciação entre as suas taxas de decomposição. As taxas de decomposição foram semelhantes entre espécies e ambientes, não sendo verificada maior velocidade de decomposição associada com a interação entre as espécies e seus ambientes de origem, o que indica ausência de HFA. Além disso, não foi verificado efeito positivo da fauna do solo na decomposição. A dinâmica química dos detritos foliares evidenciou a imobilização de nitrogênio e acúmulo de lignina ao longo da decomposição, o que indica limitação na atividade microbiana por nitrogênio e baixa qualidade da serapilheira de Rustia formosa e Licania hoehnei. As variações nas concentrações de carbono, nitrogênio e fósforo influenciaram a dinâmica da decomposição ao longo do tempo. Esse estudo contribui para compreensão de como fatores importantes na decomposição interagem em ecossistemas tropicais, e aponta a importância da qualidade da serapilheira e disponibilidade de nutrientes no ambiente como direcionadores da decomposição. Litter decomposition is a key process for nutrient cycling and maintenance of soil fertility in tropical forests, contributing to carbon fluxes to the atmosphere and being constantly discussed in the global climate change scenario. Among the main factors that control decomposition, the place of origin of species, litter quality and soil community are currently with great attention. Interactions between plants and decomposers that lead to a fast decomposition in the place of origin of species related to other sites and species are called home field advantage (HFA). The goal of this study was to investigate the occurrence of HFA, as well the influence of interactions between place of origin, soil decomposers and litter quality on the litter decomposition in areas of lowland and montane Atlantic forest located in the north coast of Sao Paulo state. For this it was performed an decomposition experiment with transplant of litter of Rustia Formosa, from lowland forest, and Licania hoehnei, from montane forest, between the two forests, with duration of 250 days, using litter bags with different mesh sizes to allow and exclude the access of meso and macro soil fauna. It was also quantified nutrient and organic compounds concentration to determine the initial litter quality and its dynamics during decomposition. The differences in initial litter quality between species did not cause differentiation in the decomposition rate. The decomposition rates were similar between species and ambient, with no faster decomposition associated with the interaction between species and its local places of origin, which indicates lack of HFA. Besides that, there was no positive effect of soil fauna on the decomposition. The chemical dynamics of litter pointed out nitrogen immobilization and lignin accumulation during decomposition, which indicates microbial limitation by nitrogen and low litter quality of Rustia Formosa and Licania hoehnei. The variations in carbon, nitrogen and lignin concentration influenced the dynamics of decomposition during the time. This study contributed to the comprehension of how important factors of decomposition can interact in tropical ecosystems, and pointed the importance of litter quality and nutrient availability of the ambient as drivers of decomposition.

Entender como comunidades são estruturadas a partir de um pool de espécies é uma questão central em Ecologia de Comunidades. Diversas abordagens foram propostas para estabelecer a ligação entre os padrões de estrutura de comunidades e os processos que os geram. As regras de assembleia e a abordagem filogenética em ecologia de comunidades são alguns exemplos. Entretanto, o que estas abordagens não levam em conta é o efeito de processos neutros na estruturação de comunidades. Há um consenso de que tanto nicho como neutralidade afetam a estrutura de comunidades e que se deve avaliar a importância relativa de cada um destes processos. A ideia desta tese foi usar modelos estatísticos para representar como processos neutros e de nicho geram padrões em comunidades. No Capítulo 2 propus uma abordagem baseada em modelos hierárquicos através da qual é possível expressar processos neutros e de nicho. A partir disso, foi possível representar hipóteses em que apenas processos neutros afetam a estrutura da comunidade, apenas processos de nicho ou diferentes combinações entre ambos. Usando seleção de modelos, identifiquei qual a combinação de processos melhor explica as abundâncias observadas das espécies. Com isso, mostrei que as comunidades de samambaias em gradientes altitudinais na Serra do Mar no Paraná, Brasil são estruturadas por uma mistura de filtro ambiental, deriva ecológica e limitação de dispersão. O filtro ambiental define as abundâncias das espécies selecionando as melhores estratégias ecológicas das espécies dependendo da altitude. A variação de abundância entre as espécies que compartilham as mesmas estratégias ecológicas é explicada em parte por deriva ecológica e limitação de dispersão e, em parte, por filtro de habitat independente dos atributos das espécies incorporados no modelo. Com isso, delimitei como processos baseados em nicho e neutralidade afetam a abundância das espécies de samambaias ao longo de gradientes altitudinais. No Capítulo 3 usei um estudo de caso para explorar a ideia central da abordagem filogenética em ecologia de comunidades de que é possível inferir os processos que afetam as comunidades com base em padrões locais de estrutura filogenética. Usei a abordagem de modelos proposta no Capítulo 2 para simular comunidades geradas por processos puramente neutros, puramente de nicho e uma combinação hierárquica entre os dois. Encontrei que comunidades geradas apenas por processos de nicho geram estruturas filogenéticas aleatórias na maioria dos casos. A detecção de estruturas filogenéticas aleatórias foi ainda mais frequente nas comunidades geradas por processos puramente neutros e pela combinação de processos neutros e de nicho, não sendo possível a distinção entre estes dois cenários. Desse modo, o estudo de caso mostrou que estruturas filogenéticas não aleatórias são muito pouco plausíveis e que os processos neutros geram uma forte assinatura nos padrões de estrutura filogenética. Com a abordagem proposta nesta tese foi possível delimitar a influência de processos de nicho e neutralidade em comunidades e entender suas consequências em termos dos padrões por eles gerados. A tradução dos diferentes processos em modelos mistos mostrou-se uma ferramenta poderosa para quantificar padrões e construir explicações de como os processos operam juntos Understanding how communities are assembled from a species pool is a central question in community ecology. Different approaches to link pattern and processes in community ecology were proposed. Some examples are assembly rules and the community phylogenetic approach. However, one aspect not accounted in those approaches is how neutral processes affect community patterns. There is a consensus that both niche and neutral processes affect community assembly and that the goal should be assess the relative importance of each process. The general idea if this thesis was to use statistical models to represent how niche and neutral generate community patterns. In Chapter 3, I proposed a framework based on hierarchical models to express niche and neutral processes. I used this approach to represent hypothesis in which only niche processes affect community structure, only neutral processes or a hierarchical combination of both explains species abundance. By using model selection, I identifyied which combination of processes better predicts observed abundances on local communities. I showed that fern communities across altitudinal gradients at Serra do Mar in Paraná, Brazil are structured by a mixture of environmental filtering, ecological drift and limited dispersal. Environmental filtering defines species abundance, selecting the best ecological strategies of species depending on altitude. Variation on species abundance sharing the same ecological strategies is explained in part by drift and limited dispersal, and in part by habitat filtering independent of species traits considered in the models. Hence, I refined how niche and neutral processes affect fern abundance on altitudinal gradients. In Chapter 3, I used a case study to explore the idea from community phylogenetics of inferring processes affecting communities based on patterns of phylogenetic structure. I used the modeling framework from Chapter 3 to simulate communities built by niche, neutral and combination of both processes. I found that communities based on niche processes are likely to generate a random phylogenetic structure. The detection of random phylogenetic strucure was even more common on communities built solely by neutral processes and combination of both niche and neutral processes. Therefore, the case study showed that a non random phylogenetic strucure is unlikely and that neutral processes strongly affect the outcome of phylogenetic patterns. Based on the framework proposed on this thesis it is possible to delimit the influence of niche and neutral processes on community assembly and to understand what are the consequences in terms of community patterns. Translating different processes into mixed models can be a powerful tool to quantify patterns and built explanations on how the processes operate together

A restauração ecológica, ao buscar a manutenção de processos ecológicos e serviços ecossistêmicos, vem exercendo um importante papel na recuperação de ecossistemas degradados e conservação da biodiversidade. Restabelecer as interações entre organismos pode, contudo, ser uma tarefa mais árdua em ambientes de alta diversidade com complexas relações ecológicas como as florestas tropicais. Neste trabalho, investigamos a resposta dos insetos visitantes florais à restauração por plantio de mudas de espécies de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, uma vez que o restabelecimento do processo de polinização é imprescindível para a perpetuação da floresta implantada. Para isso, foram examinados diferentes aspectos das comunidades de plantas e visitantes florais em seis áreas em processo de restauração. Primeiramente, buscouse analisar a estrutura da comunidade de visitantes florais e seus padrões de visita às flores, avaliandose também se a proximidade de fragmentos de vegetação nativa é importante na determinação da estrutura destas comunidades. Além disso, investigamos as espécies vegetais que florescem nos estágios iniciais de restauração para verificarmos se a comunidade de plantas se restabelecendo em cada local é importante na determinação da comunidade de visitantes. Por fim, avaliamos o restabelecimento do processo de polinização ao averiguar o transporte de pólen ocorrendo nas áreas restauradas e ao examinar a robustez das redes formadas frente à extinção simulada de espécies. Todas as áreas analisadas apresentaram redes de interação plantavisitante floral com estrutura e atributos comuns a outras redes mutualísticas de polinização, indicando que o processo deve estar se restabelecendo. A diferença na composição de espécies de visitantes não resultou em diferenças nos atributos das redes e a distância das áreas restauradas a fragmentos de vegetação nativa não influenciou a composição da comunidade de visitantes. Por outro lado, a vegetação regenerante composta por espécies ruderais aumentou a diversidade de visitantes e também a complexidade das redes de interação planta visitante floral, afetando a composição e provavelmente o funcionamento das comunidades. Embora tanto as redes de visitação quanto as de transporte de pólen revelem comunidades funcionalmente complexas com um número relativamente diverso de interações entre plantas e potenciais polinizadores, os dados de visitação demonstraram que nem todas as áreas possuem o mesmo padrão de resposta à extinção simulada de espécies. A presença massiva de gramíneas é provavelmente um fator determinante da robustez destas redes já que ela dificulta a regeneração natural das espécies ruderais que contribuem para o maior aporte de recursos florais para os insetos visitantes. Este trabalho demonstra a importância de se avaliar a recuperação dos aspectos funcionais de ecossistemas restaurados e tem implicações práticas para o manejo de áreas restauradas onde houver preocupação particular com a recuperação das interações plantapolinizador. Enfatizamos a importância do monitoramento constante de áreas restauradas para melhor entendermos as trajetórias de recuperação das florestas tropicais e recomendamos estudos multidisciplinares que integrem diversas áreas de conhecimento para aperfeiçoarmos as ações de restauração. Ecological restoration plays an essential role in recovering degraded ecosystems and maintaining biodiversity. Restoration initiatives aiming to restore ecological processes and ecosystem services are increasing rapidly worldwide. However, the high diversity and complexity of interactions among organisms in tropical ecosystems make their restoration a challenge. Since pollination is one ecosystem process that must be reinstated in order to perpetuate restored forests, we investigated flower visitors response to habitat restoration. In six areas of Atlantic Semideciduous Forest undergoing restoration, blooming plants (introduced and spontaneously regenerated), flower visitors and their interactions were recorded bimonthly during one year. We used the data to analyze the patterns of insect visitation in each area and to evaluate whether remnant habitat proximity is important in determining the structure of flowervisitor communities. We also examined the role of earlysuccessional plant community in determining richness and composition of flowervisitor communities. To decide whether pollination has been successfully reinstated, we evaluated the patterns of pollen movement and the robustness of interaction networks to species loss. Our results suggest that plantpollinator communities were equally established on all restored sites. There were no differences in the metrics of flowervisitor networks between forest categories, showing that habitat proximity had no effect on visitation webs. On the other hand, spontaneously regenerated plants (mostly weeds) were responsible to increase the diversity of flowervisiting insects as well as the complexity of visitation webs, hence having a crucial role on ecosystem functioning during early stages of forest restoration. We also found that despite having a relatively complex network structure and diverse community of potential pollinators, not all areas show the same resilience to species extinction. Still, the removal of the most connected plants and pollinators first from the network caused the higher number of secondary extinctions. The robustness of pollination networks to species loss seems to be related to the occurrence of alien grasses in some of the restored areas. As alien grass invasion inhibits natural regeneration of weeds, it also decreases the availability of floral resources to insects foraging in those areas. Our findings have practical implications for the management of restored forests, mainly those with specific targets such as recovering pollinatorfriendly environments. Additionally, this study demonstrates the importance of evaluating functional aspects of biodiversity in restored areas. We highlight the relevance of monitoring restored communities at different successional stages to improve our understanding of restoration trajectories. We further recommend future research to be more integrative, so that the information produced will help to better planning restoration activities.

Mutualismos entre plantas e polinizadores estão organizados em redes de interação que envolvem muitas espécies. Em última instância, o que determina a ocorrência das interações entre plantas e polinizadores são as características dos dois grupos de espécies. O comportamento social pode ser uma das caraterísticas chave na organização das interações em sistemas de polinização. Investigamos se a presença de polinizadores com comportamento social em redes de polinização está associada a diferentes padrões estruturais, e se polinizadores com níveis crescentes de complexidade no comportamento social são mais importantes pra estrutura dessas redes. Encontramos que a variação na proporção de espécies sociais não altera a estrutura de redes de polinização. Encontramos também que espécies com comportamento social são, em média, mais importantes para a estrutura de redes de polinização do que espécies solitárias. Nossos resultados corroboram resultados anteriores que sugerem que redes mutualísticas tem estruturas invariantes. Nossos resultados sugerem ainda que o papel estrutural mais proeminente das espécies sociais está associado à sua maior abundância. Incluir aspectos da história natural das espécies e das interações em estudos de redes ecológicas, nos permitirá fazer inferências cada vez mais assertivas sobre a importância funcional das espécies em comunidades Mutualisms between plants and pollinators are organized in interaction networks that involve many species. Ultimately, what determines the occurrence of interactions among plants and pollinators are the traits of both groups of species. Social behavior can be a key trait on the organization of interactions between plants and pollinators. Here, we investigated if the presence of pollinators with social behavior in pollination networks is associated to different structural patterns, and if pollinators with increasing levels of complexity in social behavior are more important for network structure. We found that the presence of social pollinator species does not affect the structure of pollination networks. We also found that species with social behavior are, on average, more important for network structure than solitary species. Our results reinforce past studies that suggested that the structure of mutualistic networks has invariant structural properties. Our results also suggest that the more prominent role occupied by pollinators with social behavior is associated to these species\' large abundances. Including natural history information about species and about species interactions on the study of ecological networks will allow us to make more assertive inferences on the functional roles species occupy in ecological communities
