Abstract: The unprecedented medium-resolution ( R _λ ∼ 1500–3500) near- and mid-infrared (1–18 μ m) spectrum provided by JWST for the young (140 ± 20 Myr) low-mass (12–20 M _Jup ) L–T transition (L7) companion VHS 1256 b gives access to a catalog of molecular absorptions. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of this data set utilizing a forward-modeling approach applying our Bayesian framework, ForMoSA . We explore five distinct atmospheric models to assess their performance in estimating key atmospheric parameters: T _eff , log( g ), [M/H], C/O, γ , f _sed , and R . Our findings reveal that each parameter’s estimate is significantly influenced by factors such as the wavelength range considered and the model chosen for the fit. This is attributed to systematic errors in the models and their challenges in accurately replicating the complex atmospheric structure of VHS 1256 b, notably the complexity of its clouds and dust distribution. To propagate the impact of these systematic uncertainties on our atmospheric property estimates, we introduce innovative fitting methodologies based on independent fits performed on different spectral windows. We finally derived a T _eff consistent with the spectral type of the target, considering its young age, which is confirmed by our estimate of log( g ). Despite the exceptional data quality, attaining robust estimates for chemical abundances [M/H] and C/O, often employed as indicators of formation history, remains challenging. Nevertheless, the pioneering case of JWST’s data for VHS 1256 b has paved the way for future acquisitions of substellar spectra that will be systematically analyzed to directly compare the properties of these objects and correct the systematics in the models.

Abstract: We present a performance analysis for the aperture masking interferometry (AMI) mode on board the James Webb Space Telescope Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (JWST/NIRISS). Thanks to self-calibrating observables, AMI accesses inner working angles down to and even within the classical diffraction limit. The scientific potential of this mode has recently been demonstrated by the Early Release Science (ERS) 1386 program with a deep search for close-in companions in the HIP 65426 exoplanetary system. As part of ERS 1386, we use the same data set to explore the random, static, and calibration errors of NIRISS AMI observables. We compare the observed noise properties and achievable contrast to theoretical predictions. We explore possible sources of calibration errors and show that differences in charge migration between the observations of HIP 65426 and point-spread function calibration stars can account for the achieved contrast curves. Lastly, we use self-calibration tests to demonstrate that with adequate calibration NIRISS F380M AMI can reach contrast levels of ∼9–10 mag at ≳ λ / D . These tests lead us to observation planning recommendations and strongly motivate future studies aimed at producing sophisticated calibration strategies taking these systematic effects into account. This will unlock the unprecedented capabilities of JWST/NIRISS AMI, with sensitivity to significantly colder, lower-mass exoplanets than lower-contrast ground-based AMI setups, at orbital separations inaccessible to JWST coronagraphy.

Abstract: Abstract The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA’s first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or interme-diate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe.

Abstract: We present JWST Early Release Science coronagraphic observations of the super-Jupiter exoplanet, HIP 65426b, with the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) from 2 to 5 μ m, and with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) from 11 to 16 μ m. At a separation of ∼0.″82 (87 ${}_{-31}^{+108}$ au), HIP 65426b is clearly detected in all seven of our observational filters, representing the first images of an exoplanet to be obtained by JWST, and the first-ever direct detection of an exoplanet beyond 5 μ m. These observations demonstrate that JWST is exceeding its nominal predicted performance by up to a factor of 10, depending on separation and subtraction method, with measured 5 σ contrast limits of ∼1 × 10 ^−5 and ∼2 × 10 ^−4 at 1″ for NIRCam at 4.4 μ m and MIRI at 11.3 μ m, respectively. These contrast limits provide sensitivity to sub-Jupiter companions with masses as low as 0.3 M _Jup beyond separations of ∼100 au. Together with existing ground-based near-infrared data, the JWST photometry are fit well by a BT-SETTL atmospheric model from 1 to 16 μ m, and they span ∼97% of HIP 65426b's luminous range. Independent of the choice of model atmosphere, we measure an empirical bolometric luminosity that is tightly constrained between $\mathrm{log}\left({L}_{\mathrm{bol}}/{L}_{\odot }\right)$ = −4.31 and −4.14, which in turn provides a robust mass constraint of 7.1 ± 1.2 M _Jup . In totality, these observations confirm that JWST presents a powerful and exciting opportunity to characterize the population of exoplanets amenable to high-contrast imaging in greater detail.

6. Hare&Hounds Exercise for Stellar Ages and Masses in the Context of FGK Stars with and without Asteroseismology

Abstract: Accurate and precise determination of the global properties, such as ages and masses of stars, is a fundamental step in order to characterize the host-planet systems. The advanced techniques offered by Asteroseismology have given us fundamental additional constraints that enormously increased our ability to model those stars. However the derived quantities are usually presented in literature case-by-case (i.e. once a planet candidate is detected). This results in a non-homogeneous census of stars, caused by the use of different optimization methods coupled with several input physics adopted in stellar models. Therefore many tests have been performed with the aim of identifying and assessing the impact on the derived stellar properties of several pipelines. Nevertheless many of the targets in the PLATO mission will not benefit from the advantage of having asteroseismic data. In this talk we present the team effort of the Ariel Stellar Age-Mass-Radius sub-WG of evaluating the accuracy of FGK stars on mass and age using several pipelines to estimate stellar properties, by data comparison with pre-computed grids of evolutionary tracks. A forward modeling hare-and-hounds (H&H) exercise was conducted using 5 optimizations pipelines (BASTA, CLES-on-the-fly, ISOCHRONE PLACEMENT, PARAM, SPiNS) and 5 different stellar evolution grids (BASTI, CLES, GARSTEC, MESA, PARSEC), deriving stellar properties from sets of observational constraints with and without seismic constraints. 7. Bayesian characterization of circumbinary sub-stellar objects with LISA

Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect and characterize ∼104 Galactic Binaries, consisting predominantly of two white dwarfs (WDs). An interesting prospect within this population is a third object – another WD star, a circumbinary exoplanet (CBP), or a brown dwarf (BD) – in orbit about the inner WD pair. We present the first fully Bayesian detection and posterior analysis of substellar objects with LISA, focusing on the characterization of CBPs. We used an optimistic astrophysically motivated catalogue of these CBP third-body sources, including their orbital eccentricity around the inner binary for the first time. We examined Bayesian evidence computations for detectability, as well as the effects on the posterior distributions for both the inner binary parameters and the third-body parameters. We find that the posterior behaviour bifurcates based on whether the third-body period is above or below half the observation time. Additionally, we find that undetectable third-body sources can bias the inner binary parameters whether or not the correct template is used. We used the information retrieved from the study of the CBP population to make an initial conservative prediction for the number of detectable BD systems in the original catalogue. We end with commentary on the predicted qualitative effects on LISA global fitting and Galactic Binary population analysis. Abstract: The Ariel mission will characterise the chemical and thermal properties of the atmospheres of about a thousand exoplanets transiting their host star(s). The observation of such a large sample of planets will allow to deepen our understanding of planetary and atmospheric formation at the early stages, providing a truly representative picture of the chemical nature of exoplanets, and relating this directly to the type and chemical environment of the host star. Hence, the accurate and precise determination of the host star fundamental properties is essential to Ariel for drawing a comprehensive picture of the underlying essence of these planetary systems. We present here a structured approach for the characterisation of Ariel stars that accounts for the concepts of homogeneity and coherence among a large set of stellar parameters. We present here the studies and benchmark analyses we have been performing to determine robust stellar fundamental parameters, elemental abundances, activity indices, and stellar ages. In particular, we present results for the homogeneous estimation of the activity indices S and log(RHK′) , and preliminary results for elemental abundances of Na, Al, Mg, Si, C, N. In addition, we analyse the variation of a planetary spectrum, obtained with Ariel, as a function of the uncertainty on the stellar effective temperature. The planetary bulk and atmospheric compositions bear the marks of the way the planets formed: Ariel’s observations will therefore provide an unprecedented wealth of data to advance our understanding of planet formation in our Galaxy. A number of environmental and evolutionary factors, however, can affect the final atmospheric composition. As large space missions will be necessary for detecting and characterizing exo-Earth twins, developing the techniques and technology for direct imaging of exoplanets is a driving focus for the community. For the first time, JWST will directly observe extrasolar planets at mid-infrared wavelengths beyond 5 μm, deliver detailed spectroscopy revealing much more precise chemical abundances and atmospheric conditions, and provide sensitivity to analogs of our solar system ice-giant planets at wide orbital separations, an entirely new class of exoplanet. However, in order to maximize the scientific output over the lifetime of the mission, an exquisite understanding of the instrumental performance of JWST is needed as early in the mission as possible. In this paper, we describe our 55 hr Early Release Science Program that will utilize all four JWST instruments to extend the characterization of planetary-mass companions to ∼15 μm as well as image a circumstellar disk in the mid-infrared with unprecedented sensitivity. Our program will also assess the performance of the observatory in the key modes expected to be commonly used for exoplanet direct imaging and spectroscopy, optimize data calibration and processing, and generate representative data sets that will enable a broad user base to effectively plan for general observing programs in future Cycles. © 2022. Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect and characterize $\sim10^4$ Galactic Binaries consisting predominantly of two White Dwarfs (WD). An interesting prospect within this population is a third object--another WD star, a Circumbinary Exoplanet (CBP), or a Brown Dwarf (BD)--in orbit about the inner WD pair. We present the first fully Bayesian detection and posterior analysis of sub-stellar objects with LISA, focusing on the characterization of CBPs. We used an optimistic astrophysically motivated catalogue of these CBP third-body sources, including their orbital eccentricity around the inner binary for the first time. We examined Bayesian Evidence computations for detectability, as well as the effects on the posterior distributions for both the inner binary parameters and the third-body parameters. We find that the posterior behavior bifurcates based on whether the third-body period is above or below half the observation time. Additionally, we find that undetectable third-body sources can bias the inner binary parameters whether or not the correct template is used. We used the information retrieved from the study of the CBP population to make an initial conservative prediction for the number of detectable BD systems in the original catalogue. We end with commentary on the predicted qualitative effects on LISA global fitting and Galactic Binary population analysis. The procedure used in this work is generic and can be directly applied to other astrophysical effects expected within the Galactic Binary population., 15 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Abstract: Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. The Ariel payload is developed by a consortium of more than 50 institutes from 16 ESA countries, which include the UK, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, and a NASA contribution., Comment: Ariel Definition Study Report, 147 pages. Abstract: Techniques and Instrumentation for Detection of Exoplanets X (2021) San Diego1 August 2021 through 5 August 2021, Code 172620.--Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering vol. 118232021 Article number 118230H, The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and its suite of instruments will offer significant capabilities towards the high contrast imaging of objects such as exoplanets, protoplanetary disks, and debris disks at short angular separations from their considerably brighter host stars. For the JWST user community to simulate and predict these capabilities for a given science case, the JWST Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) is the most readily available and widely used simulation tool. However, the ETC is not capable of simulating a range of observational features that can significantly impact the performance of JWST's high contrast imaging modes (e.g.Target acquisition offsets, temporal wavefront drifts, small grid dithers, and telescope rolls) and therefore does not produce realistic contrast curves. Abstract: We provide here tables of stellar limb-darkening coefficients (LDCs) for the Ariel ESA M4 space mission. These tables include LDCs corresponding to different wavelength bins and white bands for the NIRSpec, AIRS-Ch0 and AIRS-Ch1 spectrographs, and those corresponding to the VISPhot, FGS1 and FGS2 photometers. The LDCs are calculated with the open-source software ExoTETHyS for three complete grids of stellar atmosphere models obtained with the ATLAS9 and PHOENIX codes. The three model grids are complementary, as the PHOENIX code adopts more modern input physics and spherical geometry, while the models calculated with ATLAS9 cover wider ranges of stellar parameters. The LDCs obtained from corresponding models in the ATLAS9 and PHOENIX grids are compared in the main text. Abstract: Ariel has been selected as the next ESA M4 science mission and it is expected to be launched in 2028. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will observe the atmospheres of a large and diversified population of transiting exoplanets. A key factor for the achievement of the scientific goal of Ariel is the selection strategy for the definition of the input target list. A meaningful choice of the targets requires an accurate knowledge of the planet hosting star properties and this is necessary to be obtained well before the launch. In this work, we present the results of a bench-marking analysis between three different spectroscopic techniques used to determine stellar parameters for a selected number of targets belonging to the Ariel reference sample. We aim to consolidate a method that will be used to homogeneously determine the stellar parameters of the complete Ariel reference sample. Abstract: The discovery and study of exoplanets in their diversity is arguably one of the most exciting development in astronomy over the past 25 years, rivalled by the detection of gravitational waves.In this talk I will merge these two fields presenting an original observational method which employs gravitational waves to detect exoplanets. In particular I will show how the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission will be able to observe Jupiter-like exoplanets orbiting white dwarfs binaries. This technique will allow us to both overcome the selection bias of current electromagnetic detection techniques, whose observations are limited to the Solar neighbourhood, and to search for post-main sequence exoplanets everywhere within the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. Detections by LISA will deepen our knowledge on the life of exoplanets subsequent to the most extreme evolution phases of their hosts, clarifying whether new phases of planetary formation take place later in the life of the stars. Finally, in the spirit of the new era of multi-messenger astronomy, I will discuss the possibilities that could open for the field of exoplanets when standard electromagnetic techniques work in synergy with gravitational-wave astronomy.

Abstract: Gravitational waves have opened a new observational window through which some of the most exotic objects in the Universe, as well as some of the secrets of gravitation itself, can now be revealed. Among all these new discoveries, we recently demonstrated [N. Tamanini & C. Danielski, Nat. Astron., 3(9), 858 (2019)] that space-based gravitational wave observations will have the potential to detect a new population of massive circumbinary exoplanets everywhere inside our Galaxy. In this essay we argue that these circumbinary planetary systems can also be detected outside the Milky Way, in particular within its satellite galaxies. Abstract: We explore the prospects for the detection of giant circumbinary exoplanets and brown dwarfs (BDs) orbiting Galactic double white dwarfs binaries (DWDs) with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). By assuming an occurrence rate of 50%, motivated by white dwarf pollution observations, we built a Galactic synthetic population of P-type giant exoplanets and BDs orbiting DWDs. We carried this out by injecting different sub-stellar populations, with various mass and orbital separation characteristics, into the DWD population used in the LISA mission proposal. We then performed a Fisher matrix analysis to measure how many of these three-body systems show a periodic Doppler-shifted gravitational wave perturbation detectable by LISA. We report the number of circumbinary planets (CBPs) and (BDs) that can be detected by LISA for various combinations of mass and semi-major axis distributions. We identify pessimistic and optimistic scenarios corresponding, respectively, to 3 and 83 (14 and 2218) detections of CBPs (BDs), observed during the length of the nominal LISA mission. These detections are distributed all over the Galaxy following the underlying DWD distribution, and they are biased towards DWDs with higher LISA signal-to-noise ratio and shorter orbital period. Finally, we show that if LISA were to be extended for four more years, the number of systems detected will be more than doubled in both the optimistic and pessimistic scenarios. Our results present promising prospects for the detection of post-main sequence exoplanets and BDs, showing that gravitational waves can prove the existence of these populations over the totality of the Milky Way. Detections by LISA will deepen our knowledge on the life of exoplanets subsequent to the most extreme evolution phases of their hosts, clarifying whether new phases of planetary formation take place later in the life of the stars., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, A&A in press

Abstract: So far, around 4,000 exoplanets have been discovered orbiting a large variety of stars. Owing to the sensitivity limits of the currently used detection techniques, these planets populate zones restricted either to the solar neighbourhood or towards the galactic bulge. This selection problem prevents us from unveiling the true galactic planetary population and is not set to change for the next two decades. Here, we present a detection method that overcomes this issue and that will allow us to detect massive exoplanets using gravitational-wave astronomy. We show that the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission can characterize new circumbinary exoplanets orbiting white dwarf binaries everywhere in our Galaxy—a population of exoplanets so far completely unprobed—as well as detecting extragalactic bound exoplanets in the Magellanic Clouds. Such a method is not limited by stellar activity and, in extremely favourable cases, will allow LISA to detect planets down to 50 Earth masses. Tamanini and Danielski show that LISA will be sensitive enough to detect (massive) exoplanets orbiting double white-dwarf systems using gravitational waves. This population of exoplanets cannot be probed by other means, and detections will reveal potentially significant numbers of planets in the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds.

Abstract: The Mid-Infrared instrument (MIRI) on board the James Webb Space Telescope will perform the first ever characterization of young giant exoplanets observed by direct imaging in the 5-28 microns spectral range. This wavelength range is key for both determining the bolometric luminosity of the cool known exoplanets and for accessing the strongest ammonia bands. In conjunction with shorter wavelength observations, MIRI will enable a more accurate characterization of the exoplanetary atmospheric properties. Here we consider a subsample of the currently known exoplanets detected by direct imaging and we discuss their detectability with MIRI, either using the coronagraphic or the spectroscopic modes. By using the Exo-REM atmosphere model we calculate the mid-infrared emission spectra of fourteen exoplanets, and we simulate MIRI coronagraphic or spectroscopic observations. Specifically we analyze four coronagraphic observational setups, which depend on (i) the target-star and reference-star offset (0, 3, 14 mas), (ii) the wave-front-error (130, 204 nm rms), (iii) the telescope jitter amplitude (1.6, 7 mas). We then determine the signal-to-noise and integration time values for the coronagraphic targets whose planet-to-star contrasts range from 3.9 to 10.1 mag. We conclude that all the MIRI targets should be observable with different degrees of difficulty, which depends on the final in-flight instrument performances. Furthermore, we test for detection of ammonia in the atmosphere of the coolest targets. Abstract: The science of extra-solar planets is one of the most rapidly changing areas of astrophysics and since 1995 the number of planets known has increased by almost two orders of magnitude. A combination of ground-based surveys and dedicated space missions has resulted in 560-plus planets being detected, and over 1200 that await confirmation. NASA's Kepler mission has opened up the possibility of discovering Earth-like planets in the habitable zone around some of the 100,000 stars it is surveying during its 3 to 4-year lifetime. The new ESA's Gaia mission is expected to discover thousands of new planets around stars within 200 parsecs of the Sun. The key challenge now is moving on from discovery, important though that remains, to characterisation: what are these planets actually like, and why are they as they are?In the past ten years, we have learned how to obtain the first spectra of exoplanets using transit transmission and emission spectroscopy. With the high stability of Spitzer, Hubble, and large ground-based telescopes the spectra of bright close-in massive planets can be obtained and species like water vapour, methane, carbon monoxide and dioxide have been detected. With transit science came the first tangible remote sensing of these planetary bodies and so one can start to extrapolate from what has been learnt from Solar System probes to what one might plan to learn about their faraway siblings. As we learn more about the atmospheres, surfaces and near-surfaces of these remote bodies, we will begin to build up a clearer picture of their construction, history and suitability for life.The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory, EChO, will be the first dedicated mission to investigate the physics and chemistry of Exoplanetary Atmospheres. By characterising spectroscopically more bodies in different environments we will take detailed planetology out of the Solar System and into the Galaxy as a whole.EChO has now been selected by the European Space Agency to be assessed as one of four M3 mission candidates.

23. 0.94-2.42 μm GROUND-BASED TRANSMISSION SPECTRA OF THE HOT JUPITER HD-189733b

Abstract: We present here new transmission spectra of the hot Jupiter HD-189733b using the SpeX instrument on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. We obtained two nights of observations where we recorded the primary transit of the planet in the J, H, and K bands simultaneously, covering a spectral range from 0.94 to 2.42 μm. We used Fourier analysis and other detrending techniques validated previously on other data sets to clean the data. We tested the statistical significance of our results by calculating the autocorrelation function, and we found that, after the detrending, autocorrelative noise is diminished at most frequencies. Additionally, we repeated our analysis on the out-of-transit data only, showing that the residual telluric contamination is well within the error bars. While these techniques are very efficient when multiple nights of observations are combined together, our results prove that even one good night of observations is enough to provide statistically meaningful data. Our observed spectra are consistent with space-based data recorded in the same wavelength interval by multiple instruments, indicating that ground-based facilities are becoming a viable and complementary option to spaceborne observatories. The best fit to the features in our data was obtained with water vapor. Our error bars aremore » not small enough to address the presence of additional molecules; however, by combining the information contained in other data sets with our results, it is possible to explain all the available observations with a modeled atmospheric spectrum containing water vapor, methane, carbon monoxide, and hazes/clouds.« less
