1. Efficient Online Computation of Business Process State From Trace Prefixes via N-Gram Indexing

Abstract

This paper addresses the following problem: Given a process model and an event log containing trace prefixes of ongoing cases of a process, map each case to its corresponding state (i.e., marking) in the model. This state computation operation is a building block of other process mining operations, such as log animation and short-term simulation. An approach to this state computation problem is to perform a token-based replay of each trace prefix against the model. However, when a trace prefix does not strictly follow the behavior of the process model, token replay may produce a state that is not reachable from the initial state of the process. An alternative approach is to first compute an alignment between the trace prefix of each ongoing case and the model, and then replay the aligned trace prefix. However, (prefix-)alignment is computationally expensive. This paper proposes a method that, given a trace prefix of an ongoing case, computes its state in constant time using an index that represents states as n-grams. An empirical evaluation shows that the proposed approach has an accuracy comparable to that of the prefix-alignment approach, while achieving a throughput of hundreds of thousands of traces per second.

2. Sometimes I Still Do Not See Myself as a Computer Scientist: Negotiating a Computer Science Identity as a Latina Undergraduate and Youth Mentor

Abstract

This study puts forth the counternarrative of the first author Gislaine, a first-generation undergraduate student, Latina, and computer science major. Gislaine participated in a research internship and STEM mentorship program led by the second author, Meredith. Through this program, Gislaine designed and taught CS lessons to predominantly low-income, African-American middle school students over an 8-day urban summer school program. By analyzing Gislaine's written account of her journey to CS, as well as planning documents and written reflections on her daily experiences mentoring youth, we explore how Gislaine's intersecting social identities shape her experiences both as a CS learner and as a mentor to youth. Gislaine's counternarrative illuminates the systems of oppression present in schools and the CS field, while also highlighting Gislaine's transformative approaches to mentoring students in CS. Gislaine's narratives emphasize the importance of humanizing CS and leveraging students' strengths to promote equitable access to CS education. Through her experiences, she underscores the significance of recognizing and addressing systemic barriers, while also advocating for inclusive and empowering educational practices.

Abstract

Among the existing approaches for visual-based Recommender System (RS) explainability, utilizing user-uploaded item images as efficient, trustable explanations is a promising option. However, current models following this paradigm assume that, for any user, all images uploaded by other users can be considered negative training examples (i.e. bad explanatory images), an inadvertedly naive labelling assumption that contradicts the rationale of the approach. This work proposes a new explainer training pipeline by leveraging Positive-Unlabelled (PU) Learning techniques to train image-based explainer with refined subsets of reliable negative examples for each user selected through a novel user-personalized, two-step, similarity-based PU Learning algorithm. Computational experiments show this PU-based approach outperforms the state-of-the-art non-PU method in six popular real-world datasets, proving that an improvement of visual-based RS explainability can be achieved by maximizing training data quality rather than increasing model complexity.

Abstract

We present the first on-sky results from an ultra-low-readout-noise Skipper CCD focal plane prototype for the SOAR Integral Field Spectrograph (SIFS). The Skipper CCD focal plane consists of four 6k x 1k, 15 $\mu$m pixel, fully-depleted, p-channel devices that have been thinned to ~250 $\mu$m, backside processed, and treated with an anti-reflective coating. These Skipper CCDs were configured for astronomical spectroscopy, i.e., single-sample readout noise < 4.3 e- rms/pixel, the ability to achieve multi-sample readout noise $\ll$ 1 e- rms/pixel, full-well capacities ~40,000-65,000 e-, low dark current and charge transfer inefficiency (~2 x 10$^{-4}$ e-/pixel/s and 3.44 x 10$^{-7}$, respectively), and an absolute quantum efficiency of $\gtrsim$ 80% between 450 nm and 980 nm ($\gtrsim$ 90% between 600 nm and 900 nm). We optimized the readout sequence timing to achieve sub-electron noise (~0.5 e- rms/pixel) in a region of 2k x 4k pixels and photon-counting noise (~0.22 e- rms/pixel) in a region of 220 x 4k pixels, each with a readout time of $\lesssim$ 17 min. We observed two quasars (HB89 1159+123 and QSO J1621-0042) at redshift z ~ 3.5, two high-redshift galaxy clusters (CL J1001+0220 and SPT-CL J2040-4451), an emission line galaxy at z = 0.3239, a candidate member star of the Bo\"{o}tes II ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, and five CALSPEC spectrophotometric standard stars (HD074000, HD60753, HD106252, HD101452, HD200654). We present charge-quantized, photon-counting observations of the quasar HB89 1159+123 and show the detector sensitivity increase for faint spectral features. We demonstrate signal-to-noise performance improvements for SIFS observations in the low-background, readout-noise-dominated regime. 5. Ensemble Inequivalence with Competing Interactions

Abstract

We study the effect of competing interactions on ensemble inequivalence. We consider a one-dimensional Ising model with ferromagnetic mean-field interactions and short-range couplings which can be either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. Despite the relative simplicity of the model, our calculations in the microcanonical ensemble reveal a rich phase diagram. The comparison with the corresponding phase diagram in the canonical ensemble shows the presence of phase transition points and lines which are different in the two ensembles. As an example, in a region of the phase diagram where the canonical ensemble shows a critical point and a critical end point, the microcanonical ensemble has an additional critical point and also a triple point. The regions of ensemble inequivalence typically occur at lower temperatures and at larger absolute values of the competing couplings. The presence of two free parameters in the model allows us to obtain a fourth-order critical point, which can be fully characterized by deriving its Landau normal form., Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

BackgroundSocial care integration refers to the incorporation of activities into health systems that assist patients with health-related social needs (HRSNs) that negatively impact the health outcomes of their patients, such as food insecurity or homelessness. Social care integration initiatives are becoming more common. The COVID-19 pandemic strained health systems while simultaneously increasing levels of unmet social needs.ObjectiveTo describe the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on established social care delivery in a primary care setting.DesignWe used qualitative semi-structured interviews of stakeholders to assess barriers and facilitators to social care delivery in the primary care setting during the COVID-19 health emergency. Data was analyzed using a hybrid inductive/deductive thematic analysis approach with both the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) and the Screen-Navigate-Connect-Address-Evaluate model of social care integration.SettingTwo safety-net, hospital-based primary care clinics with established screening for food insecurity, homelessness, and legal needs.ParticipantsSix physicians, six nurses, six members of the social work team (clinical social workers and medical case workers), six community health workers, and six patients (total N = 30) completed interviews.ResultsFour major themes were identified. (1) A strained workforce experienced challenges confronting increased levels of HRSNs. (2) Vulnerable populations experienced a disproportionate negative impact in coping with effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on HRSNs. (3) COVID-19 protections compounded social isolation but did not extinguish the sense of community. (4) Fluctuations in the social service landscape led to variable experiences.ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic disrupted established social care delivery in a primary care setting. Many of the lessons learned about challenges to social care delivery when health systems are strained are important considerations that can inform efforts to expand social care delivery.

In this paper, we examine the electron interaction within tilted anisotropic Dirac materials when subjected to external electric and magnetic fields possessing translational symmetry. Specifically, we focus on a distinct non-zero electric field magnitude, enabling the decoupling of the differential equation system inherent in the eigenvalue problem. Subsequently, employing supersymmetric quantum mechanics facilitates the determination of eigenstates and eigenvalues corresponding to the Hamiltonian operator. To delve into a semi-classical analysis of the system, we identify a set of coherent states. 12. Synchronization in a System of Kuramoto Oscillators with Distributed Gaussian Noise

Abstract

We consider a system of globally-coupled phase-only oscillators with distributed intrinsic frequencies and evolving in presence of distributed Gaussian, white noise, namely, a Gaussian, white noise whose strength for every oscillator is a specified function of its intrinsic frequency. In the absence of noise, the model reduces to the celebrated Kuramoto model of spontaneous synchronization. For two specific forms of the mentioned functional dependence and for a symmetric and unimodal distribution of the intrinsic frequencies, we unveil the rich long-time behavior that the system exhibits, which stands in stark contrast to the case in which the noise strength is the same for all the oscillators. Namely, in the studied dynamics, the system may exist in either a synchronized or an incoherent or a time-periodic state; interestingly, all of these states also appear as long-time solutions of the Kuramoto dynamics for the case of bimodal frequency distributions, but in the absence of any noise in the dynamics., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present results from the characterization and optimization of six Skipper CCDs for use in a prototype focal plane for the SOAR Integral Field Spectrograph (SIFS). We tested eight Skipper CCDs and selected six for SIFS based on performance results. The Skipper CCDs are 6k $\times$ 1k, 15 $\mu$m pixels, thick, fully-depleted, $p$-channel devices that have been thinned to $\sim 250 \mu$m, backside processed, and treated with an antireflective coating. We optimize readout time to achieve $<4.3$ e$^-$ rms/pixel in a single non-destructive readout and $0.5$ e$^-$ rms/pixel in $5 \%$ of the detector. We demonstrate single-photon counting with $N_{\rm samp}$ = 400 ($\sigma_{\rm 0e^-} \sim$ 0.18 e$^-$ rms/pixel) for all 24 amplifiers (four amplifiers per detector). We also perform conventional CCD characterization measurements such as cosmetic defects ($ <0.45 \%$ ``bad" pixels), dark current ($\sim 2 \times 10^{-4}$ e$^-$/pixel/sec.), charge transfer inefficiency ($3.44 \times 10^{-7}$ on average), and charge diffusion (PSF $< 7.5 \mu$m). We report on characterization and optimization measurements that are only enabled by photon-counting. Such results include voltage optimization to achieve full-well capacities $\sim 40,000-63,000$ e$^-$ while maintaining photon-counting capabilities, clock induced charge optimization, non-linearity measurements at low signals (few tens of electrons). Furthermore, we perform measurements of the brighter-fatter effect and absolute quantum efficiency ($\gtrsim\, 80 \%$ between 450 nm and 980 nm; $\gtrsim\,90 \%$ between 600 nm and 900 nm) using Skipper CCDs.

Abstract

Escalating wildfire frequency and severity, exacerbated by shifting climate patterns, pose significant ecological and economic challenges. Prescribed burns, a common forest management tool, aim to mitigate wildfire risks and protect biodiversity. Nevertheless, understanding the impact of prescribed burns on soil and microbial communities in temperate mixed forests, considering temporal dynamics and slash fuel types, remains crucial. Our study, conducted at the University of Tennessee Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center in Oak Ridge, TN, employed controlled burns across various treatments, and the findings indicate that low-intensity prescribed burns have none or minimal short-term effects on soil parameters but may alter soil nutrient concentrations, as evidenced by significant changes in porewater acetate, formate, and nitrate concentrations. These burns also induce shifts in microbial community structure and diversity, with Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria increasing significantly post-fire, possibly aiding soil recovery. In contrast, Verrucomicrobia showed a notable decrease over time, and other specific microbial taxa correlated with soil pH, porewater nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate concentrations. Our research contributes to understanding the intricate relationships between prescribed fire, soil dynamics, and microbial responses in temperate mixed forests in the Southern Appalachian Region, which is valuable for informed land management practices in the face of evolving environmental challenges.

Abstract

Abstract Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has high mortality and rising incidence rates. Recent data indicate that the gut microbiome and associated metabolites may play a role in the development of PDAC. To complement and inform observational studies, we investigated associations of genetically predicted abundances of individual gut bacteria and genetically predicted circulating concentrations of microbiome-associated metabolites with PDAC using Mendelian randomisation (MR). Gut microbiome-associated metabolites were identified through a comprehensive search of Pubmed, Exposome Explorer and Human Metabolome Database. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) associated by Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) with circulating levels of 109 of these metabolites were collated from Pubmed and the GWAS catalogue. SNPs for 119 taxonomically defined gut genera were selected from a meta-analysis performed by the MiBioGen consortium. Two-sample MR was conducted using GWAS summary statistics from the Pancreatic Cancer Cohort Consortium (PanScan) and the Pancreatic Cancer Case-Control Consortium (PanC4), including a total of 8,769 cases and 7,055 controls. Inverse variance-weighted MR analyses were performed along with sensitivity analyses to assess potential violations of MR assumptions. Nominally significant associations were noted for genetically predicted circulating concentrations of mannitol (odds ratio per standard deviation [ORSD] = 0.97; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.95–0.99, p = 0.006), methionine (ORSD= 0.97; 95%CI: 0.94-1.00, p = 0.031), stearic acid (ORSD= 0.93; 95%CI: 0.87–0.99, p = 0.027), carnitine = (ORSD=1.01; 95% CI: 1.00-1.03, p = 0.027), hippuric acid (ORSD= 1.02; 95%CI: 1.00-1.04, p = 0.038) and 3-methylhistidine (ORSD= 1.05; 95%CI: 1.01–1.10, p = 0.02). Two gut microbiome genera were associated with reduced PDAC risk; Clostridium sensu stricto 1 (OR: 0.88; 95%CI: 0.78–0.99, p = 0.027) and Romboutsia (OR: 0.87; 95%CI: 0.80–0.96, p = 0.004). These results, though based only on genetically predicted gut microbiome characteristics and circulating bacteria-related metabolite concentrations, provide evidence for causal associations with pancreatic carcinogenesis.

Abstract

Traveling wave theory is deployed today to improve the monitoring of transmission lines in electrical power grids. Most traveling wave methods require prior knowledge of the wave propagation of the transmission line, which is a major source of error as the value changes during the operation of the line. To improve the localization of events on transmission lines, we propose a new online localization method that simultaneously determines the frequency-dependent wave propagation characteristic from the traveling wave measurements of the event. Compared to conventional methods, this is achieved with one additional traveling wave measurement, but the method can still be applied in different measurement setups. We have derived the method based on the complex continuous wavelet transform. The accuracy of the method is evaluated in a simulation with a frequency-dependent transmission line model of the IEEE 39-bus system. The method was developed independently of the type of event and evaluated in test setups considering different lengths of the monitored line, line types and event locations. The localization accuracy is compared with existing online methods and analyzed with regard to the characterization capabilities. Abstract

Business Process Simulation (BPS) is an approach to analyze the performance of business processes under different scenarios. For example, BPS allows us to estimate what would be the cycle time of a process if one or more resources became unavailable. The starting point of BPS is a process model annotated with simulation parameters (a BPS model). BPS models may be manually designed, based on information collected from stakeholders and empirical observations, or automatically discovered from execution data. Regardless of its origin, a key question when using a BPS model is how to assess its quality. In this paper, we propose a collection of measures to evaluate the quality of a BPS model w.r.t. its ability to replicate the observed behavior of the process. We advocate an approach whereby different measures tackle different process perspectives. We evaluate the ability of the proposed measures to discern the impact of modifications to a BPS model, and their ability to uncover the relative strengths and weaknesses of two approaches for automated discovery of BPS models. Abstract

Starting from poly(4-vinylpyridine) ((P4VP)n), poly(2-vinylpyridine) ((P2VP)n), and [N=P(O2CH2CF3)]m-b-P2VP20 block copolymers, a series of metal-containing homopolymers, (P4VP)n⊕MXm, (P2VP)n⊕MXm, and [N=P(O2CH2CF3)]m-b-P2VP20]⊕MXm MXm = PtCl2, ZnCl2, and Eu(NO3)3, have been successfully prepared by using a direct and simple solution methodology. Solid-state pyrolysis of the prepared metal-containing polymeric precursors led to the formation of a variety of different metallic and metal oxide nanoparticles (Pt, ZnO, Eu2O3, and EuPO4) depending on the composition and nature of the polymeric template precursor. Thus, whereas Eu2O3 nanostructures were obtained from europium-containing homopolymers ((P4VP)n⊕MXm and (P2VP)n⊕MXm), EuPO4 nanostructures were achieved using phosphorus-containing block copolymer precursors, [N=P(O2CH2CF3)]m-b-P2VP20]⊕MXm with MXm = Eu(NO3)3. Importantly, and although both Eu2O3 and EuPO4 nanostructures exhibited a strong luminescence emission, these were strongly influenced by the nature and composition of the macromolecular metal-containing polymer template. Thus, for P2VP europium-containing homopolymers ((P4VP)n⊕MXm and (P2VP)n⊕MXm), the highest emission intensity corresponded to the lowest-molecular-weight homopolymer template, [P4VP(Eu(NO3)3]6000, whereas the opposite behavior was observed when block copolymer precursors, [N=P(O2CH2CF3)]m-b-P2VP20]⊕MXm MXm= Eu(NO3)3, were used (highest emission intensity corresponded to [N=P(O2CH2CF3)]100-b-[P2VP(Eu(NO3)3)x]20). The intensity ratio of the emission transitions: 5D0 → 7F2/5D0 → 7F1, suggested a different symmetry around the Eu3+ ions depending on the nature of the polymeric precursor, which also influenced the sizes of the prepared Pt°, ZnO, Eu2O3, and EuPO4 nanostructures.

Abstract

Waiting times in a business process often arise when a case transitions from one activity to another. Accordingly, analyzing the causes of waiting times of activity transitions can help analysts to identify opportunities for reducing the cycle time of a process. This paper proposes a process mining approach to decompose the waiting time observed in each activity transition in a process into multiple direct causes and to analyze the impact of each identified cause on the cycle time efficiency of the process. An empirical evaluation shows that the proposed approach is able to discover different direct causes of waiting times. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a real-life process.

Women with breast cancer (BC) experience multiple symptoms related to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) treatment that impair their functioning and quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to explore the effect of high-intensity aerobic interval training (HIIT) on quality of life and NAC side effects in women with BC. Methods: 56 patients (48.56 (7.84) years, range 35-64 years) diagnosed locally advanced (stage II-III) ER + BC receiving doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide-based NAC were randomly assigned to the HIIT group and a control group (CG) for 6 months. The HIIT group performed 2 to 3 HIIT sessions per week according to the study protocol (4 × 4 minutes at 85%-95% peak heart rate (HR)). The CG followed the standard of care instructions by the oncologists. To assess the QoL participants completed the EORTC QLQ-C30 with the additional BC module of QLQ BR-23. Weekly self-reports on NAC side effects were collected through online survey. Results: Study data were analyzed for 37 participants (nHIIT = 17, nCON = 20) who reported at least 14 (60%) weeks. HIIT was effective to reduce BC symptom scale outcomes (ES = 0.113, P = .048), and alleviate systemic therapy side effects (ES = 0.154, P = .020) and cancer related symptoms (ES = 0.124, P = .038). The most common side effect participants experienced at least 1 to 4 days/week was pain (average 50.9% and 56.8% for HIIT and CG, respectively), followed by sleep disturbances (average 50.9% and 49.9%, respectively). About 31% in both groups experienced sleep disturbances 5 to 7 days/week. The NAC induced physical, social and fatigue side effects had significantly lower incidence in HIIT group, while psychological side effects were significantly more common in training group. Conclusions: HIIT is an effective physical exercise program to maintain higher quality of life and help to reduce some of NAC induced side effects for women with BC.

Background: This study aimed to compare and examine the local and non-local effects of a foam rolling (FR) and static stretching (SS) intervention applied to the plantar flexor (PF). Methods: Fourteen female participants were investigated. Each participant underwent three conditions in a random order at least 48h apart and at the same time of the day: Control (CC), SS, and FR. Each condition was performed unilaterally in the dominant PF for 4 sets (apart from CC). SS was performed for 30 s. The FR included 30 rolls (15 in each direction) over a period of 30 s. A rest of 30 s was provided between each set for all conditions. Outcome variables were ankle dorsiflexion range of movement (ROM), tissue hardness, localized bioimpedance analysis at 50 kHz (L-BIA), and pain pressure thresholds (PPT). Tissue hardness, L-BIA, and PPT were measured in the lower leg and thigh. Measures were assessed pre (T0), immediately post (T1), and 10-min after (T2) the intervention. Results: No differences were found for time for the CC or between the T0 of each condition. Concerning the lower leg, ROM improved for SS and FR from T0 to T1 while returning to baseline in T2. A significant increase in PPT was observed only for SS in T1. L-BIA showed a significant increase for both phase angle and impedance only for FR in T1. Tissue hardness did not change for any group at any time-point. Concerning the thigh, no measure at any time point showed significant differences. Conclusion: Both, FR and SS were able to acutely improve ankle ROM. The observed changes were probably caused by a change in viscoelastic properties and local pain perception, without any variation in tissue morphology. FR was the only intervention to improve the intracellular-to-extracellular ratio and decrease fluids. Non-local effects were not observed.

Therapeutic Area: Obesity Background: Obesity is a chronic, progressive, and relapsing health condition that increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, yet management is challenging, and weight loss is typically not sustained. We hypothesized a Nurse Practitioner (NP)-led virtual weight management program will result in weight loss, reduced waist circumference (WC), and increased satisfaction for obese women at risk for CVD. Methods: Women enrolled in an observational, single center study in the outpatient cardiology clinics in a large academic medical center in Southern California. Women with a BMI over 30 kg/m2 and at least one CVD risk factor were eligible. Measures included a digital-based weight-tracking application, a smart scale, a smart tape measure, and a satisfaction with the program survey. Thirty women were followed for eight weeks between January-March 2023. Each woman met twice on a virtual platform to receive dietary counseling using motivational interviewing and to establish weight goals with the NP. The women received booster texts every two weeks to submit weights and WC. Paired t-tests were used to compare mean scores pre-and post-intervention. Results: Thirty women enrolled and 26 completed the program. Mean age was 54.0±13.4 years, and White (n=19, 73.2 %). There was a significant reduction in mean weight (6.4 lbs.±6.6 lbs; p < 0.001; 3.2 %±2.9 body weight) and WC (3.0 in.±1.6; p < 0.001) (Figure). Twenty-two women lost weight and reduced their BMI. Ninety two percent of women (n=24) were satisfied with the program. Conclusions: This NP-led virtual weight management program resulted in the majority of women significantly reduce their weight and WC using novel self-monitoring technology in addition to behavioral counseling on lifestyle modifications. Utilizing smart scales for digital self-monitoring has the potential to offer a promising strategy for obese women at risk for CVD to achieve sustained weight loss.

37. Relaxation dynamics in a long-range system with mixed Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian interactions

Abstract

Sometimes the dynamics of a physical system is described by non-Hamiltonian equations of motion, and additionally, the system is characterized by long-range interactions. A concrete example is that of particles interacting with light as encountered in free-electron laser and cold-atom experiments. In this work, we study the relaxation dynamics to non-Hamiltonian systems, more precisely, to systems with interactions of both Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian origin. Our model consists of $N$ globally-coupled particles moving on a circle of unit radius; the model is one-dimensional. We show that in the infinite-size limit, the dynamics, similarly to the Hamiltonian case, is described by the Vlasov equation. In the Hamiltonian case, the system eventually reaches an equilibrium state, even though one has to wait for a long time diverging with $N$ for this to happen. By contrast, in the non-Hamiltonian case, there is no equilibrium state that the system is expected to reach eventually. We characterize this state with its average magnetization. We find that the relaxation dynamics depends strongly on the relative weight of the Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian contributions to the interaction. When the non-Hamiltonian part is predominant, the magnetization attains a vanishing value, suggesting that the system does not sustain states with constant magnetization, either stationary or rotating. On the other hand, when the Hamiltonian part is predominant, the magnetization presents long-lived strong oscillations, for which we provide a heuristic explanation. Furthermore, we find that the finite-size corrections are much more pronounced than those in the Hamiltonian case; we justify this by showing that the Lenard-Balescu equation, which gives leading-order corrections to the Vlasov equation, does not vanish, contrary to what occurs in one-dimensional Hamiltonian long-range systems., Comment: 47 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Abstract The appropriate use of predictive equations in estimating body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) depends on the device used and the subject’s age, geographical ancestry, healthy status, physical activity level and sex. However, the presence of many isolated predictive equations in the literature makes the correct choice challenging, since the user may not distinguish its appropriateness. Therefore, the present systematic review aimed to classify each predictive equation in accordance with the independent parameters used. Sixty-four studies published between 1988 and 2023 were identified through a systematic search of international electronic databases. We included studies providing predictive equations derived from criterion methods, such as multi-compartment models for fat, fat-free and lean soft mass, dilution techniques for total-body water and extracellular water, total-body potassium for body cell mass, and magnetic resonance imaging or computerized tomography for skeletal muscle mass. The studies were excluded if non-criterion methods were employed or if the developed predictive equations involved mixed populations without specific codes or variables in the regression model. A total of 106 predictive equations were retrieved; 86 predictive equations were based on foot-to-hand and 20 on segmental technology, with no equations used the hand-to-hand and leg-to-leg. Classifying the subject’s characteristics, 19 were for underaged, 26 for adults, 19 for athletes, 26 for elderly and 16 for individuals with diseases, encompassing both sexes. Practitioners now have an updated list of predictive equations for assessing body composition using BIA. Researchers are encouraged to generate novel predictive equations for scenarios not covered by the current literature. Registration code in PROSPERO: CRD42023467894.

Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

Abstract Background The fruity aromatic bouquet of coffee has attracted recent interest to differentiate high value market produce as specialty coffee. Although the volatile compounds present in green and roasted coffee beans have been extensively described, no study has yet linked varietal molecular differences to the greater abundance of specific substances and support the aroma specificity of specialty coffees. Results This study compared four Arabica genotypes including one, Geisha Especial, suggested to generate specialty coffee. Formal sensory evaluations of coffee beverages stressed the importance of coffee genotype in aroma perception and that Geisha Especial-made coffee stood out by having fine fruity, and floral, aromas and a more balanced acidity. Comparative SPME–GC–MS analyses of green and roasted bean volatile compounds indicated that those of Geisha Especial differed by having greater amounts of limonene and 3-methylbutanoic acid in agreement with the coffee cup aroma perception. A search for gene ontology differences of ripening beans transcriptomes of the four varieties revealed that they differed by metabolic processes linked to terpene biosynthesis due to the greater gene expression of prenyl-pyrophosphate biosynthetic genes and terpene synthases. Only one terpene synthase (CaTPS10-like) had an expression pattern that paralleled limonene loss during the final stage of berry ripening and limonene content in the studied four varieties beans. Its functional expression in tobacco leaves confirmed its functioning as a limonene synthase. Conclusions Taken together, these data indicate that coffee variety genotypic specificities may influence ripe berry chemotype and final coffee aroma unicity. For the specialty coffee variety Geisha Especial, greater expression of terpene biosynthetic genes including CaTPS10-like, a limonene synthase, resulted in the greater abundance of limonene in green beans, roasted beans and a unique citrus note of the coffee drink.

Abstract

En 1968 se proyecta en Sevilla un modelo de edificio concebido por una oficina técnica pionera en la ciudad: OTAISA. De marcado carácter anglosajón, el edificio de oficinas modulares Sevilla 1, se convertirá en un referente de la arquitectura local. Su construcción, coherente con el carácter innovador de su programa, utilizó un sistema de prefabricación de fachada que no sólo resolvió un problema técnico, sino que representó la imagen icónica del primer edificio de oficinas modulares de la ciudad. Esta investigación profundiza en el papel que los procesos gráficos de naturaleza geométrica tuvieron sobre el diseño de los módulos prefabricados de su envolvente, demostrándose la importancia del dibujo y la geometría en su ideación y desarrollo, y revindicando su importancia en el trazado regulador del edificio. Se ha completado la definición gráfica del proyecto original, aportando un material que este trabajo, a modo de investigación, pretende recrear.

Abstract

The Ott-Antonsen ansatz shows that, for certain classes of distribution of the natural frequencies in systems of $N$ globally coupled Kuramoto oscillators, the dynamics of the order parameter, in the limit $N\to \infty$, evolves, under suitable initial conditions, in a manifold of low dimension. This is not possible when the frequency distribution, continued in the complex plane, has an essential singularity at infinite; this is the case for example, of a Gaussian distribution. In this work we propose a simple approximation scheme that allows to extend also to this case the representation of the dynamics of the order parameter in a low dimensional manifold. Using as a working example the Gaussian frequency distribution, we compare the dynamical evolution of the order parameter of the system of oscillators, obtained by the numerical integration of the $N$ equations of motion, with the analogous dynamics in the low dimensional manifold obtained with the application of the approximation scheme. The results confirm the validity of the approximation. Abstract

Business Process Simulation (BPS) is a common technique to estimate the impact of business process changes, e.g. what would be the cycle time of a process if the number of traces increases? The starting point of BPS is a business process model annotated with simulation parameters (a BPS model). Several studies have proposed methods to automatically discover BPS models from event logs -- extracted from enterprise information systems -- via process mining techniques. These approaches model the processing time of each activity based on the start and end timestamps recorded in the event log. In practice, however, it is common that the recorded start times do not precisely reflect the actual start of the activities. For example, a resource starts working on an activity, but its start time is not recorded until she/he interacts with the system. If not corrected, these situations induce waiting times in which the resource is considered to be free, while she/he is actually working. To address this limitation, this article proposes a technique to identify the waiting time previous to each activity instance in which the resource is actually working on them, and repair their start time so that they reflect the actual processing time. The idea of the proposed technique is that, as far as simulation is concerned, an activity instance may start once it is enabled and the corresponding resource is available. Accordingly, for each activity instance, the proposed technique estimates the activity enablement and the resource availability time based on the information available in the event log, and repairs the start time to include the non-recorded processing time. Abstract

Business Process Simulation (BPS) is a common approach to estimate the impact of changes to a business process on its performance measures. For example, it allows us to estimate what would be the cycle time of a process if we automated one of its activities, or if some resources become unavailable. The starting point of BPS is a business process model annotated with simulation parameters (a BPS model). In traditional approaches, BPS models are manually designed by modeling specialists. This approach is time-consuming and error-prone. To address this shortcoming, several studies have proposed methods to automatically discover BPS models from event logs via process mining techniques. However, current techniques in this space discover BPS models that only capture waiting times caused by resource contention or resource unavailability. Oftentimes, a considerable portion of the waiting time in a business process corresponds to extraneous delays, e.g., a resource waits for the customer to return a phone call. This article proposes a method that discovers extraneous delays from event logs of business process executions. The proposed approach computes, for each pair of causally consecutive activity instances in the event log, the time when the target activity instance should theoretically have started, given the availability of the relevant resource. Based on the difference between the theoretical and the actual start times, the approach estimates the distribution of extraneous delays, and it enhances the BPS model with timer events to capture these delays. Abstract

Long-range interacting systems may exhibit ensemble inequivalence and can possibly attain equilibrium states under completely open conditions, for which energy, volume and number of particles simultaneously fluctuate. Here we consider a modified version of the Thirring model for self-gravitating systems with attractive and repulsive long-range interactions in which particles are treated as hard spheres in dimension d=1,2,3. Equilibrium states of the model are studied under completely open conditions, in the unconstrained ensemble, by means of both Monte Carlo simulations and analytical methods and are compared with the corresponding states at fixed number of particles, in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble. Our theoretical description is performed for an arbitrary local equation of state, which allows us to examine the system beyond the excluded-volume approximation. The simulations confirm the theoretical prediction of the possible occurrence of first-order phase transitions in the unconstrained ensemble. Abstract

Domesticated crops have been disseminated by humans over vast geographic areas. Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was introduced in Europe after 1492. Here, by combining whole-genome profiling, metabolic fingerprinting and phenotypic characterisation, we show that the first common bean cultigens successfully introduced into Europe were of Andean origin, after Francisco Pizarro's expedition to northern Peru in 1529. We reveal that hybridisation, selection and recombination have shaped the genomic diversity of the European common bean in parallel with political constraints. There is clear evidence of adaptive introgression into the Mesoamerican-derived European genotypes, with 44 Andean introgressed genomic segments shared by more than 90% of European accessions and distributed across all chromosomes except PvChr11. Genomic scans for signatures of selection highlight the role of genes relevant to flowering and environmental adaptation, suggesting that introgression has been crucial for the dissemination of this tropical crop to the temperate regions of Europe.
