Abstract

In this paper we study a multi-ring resonant structure including three evanescently coupled ring resonators (named triple ring resonator, TRR), with different ring radii and coupling coefficients, and coupled to two bus waveguides. The potential application of a TRR as a rotation sensor is analyzed and its advantages over a single ring resonator (SRR) under rotation conditions are also highlighted. When the coupled rings have different size and their inter-ring coupling coefficients are lower than the ring-bus coupling coefficients, the resonance frequency difference between two counter-propagating beams induced by rotation is enhanced with respect to that of a single ring resonator (SRR) with the same footprint. The scale factor of the rotating TRR, which depends on the structural parameters (i.e. inter-ring and ring-bus coupling coefficients, lengths of the rings, overall propagation loss within the rings), is up to 1.88 times the value of the scale factor of a SRR, which depends only on the ring radius, by assuming that the waveguide structure in both configurations is the same. This promising numerical achievement results in a reduction of the sensor footprint of about two times, with respect to a single ring with the same scale factor. The results obtained may be useful to define new configurations of frequency sensitive optical gyros in low-loss technology, having a small volume. In fact, by properly choosing the structural parameters, the spectral response of the TRR is forced to assume a shape more sensitive to the resonant frequency shift due to the rotation with respect to that one of a SRR.

Abstract

The TOTEM experiment at the CERN LHC has measured elastic proton-proton scattering at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and four-momentum transfers squared, |t|, from 6 x $10^{-4}$ GeV$^2$ to 0.2 GeV$^2$. Near the lower end of the |t|-interval the differential cross-section is sensitive to the interference between the hadronic and the electromagnetic scattering amplitudes. This article presents the elastic cross-section measurement and the constraints it imposes on the functional forms of the modulus and phase of the hadronic elastic amplitude. The data exclude the traditional Simplified West and Yennie interference formula that requires a constant phase and a purely exponential modulus of the hadronic amplitude. For parametrisations of the hadronic modulus with second- or third-order polynomials in the exponent, the data are compatible with hadronic phase functions giving either central or peripheral behaviour in the impact parameter picture of elastic scattering. In both cases, the $\rho$-parameter is found to be 0.12 $\pm$ 0.03. The results for the total hadronic cross-section are $\sigma_{tot}$ = (102.9 $\pm$ 2.3) mb and (103.0 $\pm$ 2.3) mb for central and peripheral phase formulations, respectively. Abstract

The capability of optical resonators to extend the effective radiation-matter interaction length originates from a multipass effect, hence is intrinsically limited by the resonator quality factor. Here, we show that this constraint can be overcome by combining the concepts of resonant interaction and coherent perfect absorption. We demonstrate and investigate super-resonant coherent absorption in a coupled Fabry-Perot-ring cavity structure. At the FP resonant wavelengths, the described phenomenon gives rise to split modes with a nearly-transparent peak and a peak whose transmission is exceptionally sensitive to the intracavity loss. For small losses, the effective interaction pathlength of these modes is proportional respectively to the ratio and the product of the individual finesse coefficients of the two resonators. The results presented extend the conventional definition of resonant absorption and point to a way of circumventing the technological limitations of ultrahigh-quality resonators in spectroscopy and optical sensing schemes

5. Very High Dose Rate Proton Dosimetry With Radioluminescent Silica-Based Optical Fibers

Abstract

We investigated the radiation-induced luminescence of cerium- and nitrogen-doped optical fibers at high dose rates (>40 Gy(H2O)/s) using high-energy proton beams (19–73 MeV) at flux and fluences representative of FLASH radiotherapy treatments. For each fiber material, we evaluated the dosimetry performances of both pristine (not irradiated) and preirradiated samples to study the effect of an X-ray pretreatment, up to a dose of 260 kGy. The core sizes of 50 $\mu $ m for the Ce-doped fiber and 62.5 $\mu $ m for the N-doped one offer exploitability in terms of spatially resolved dosimetry for proton therapy beams. We also improved the fiber dosimetry calibration running Geant4 and SRIM simulations to obtain the conversion factors between the dose rate values, usually given in water, and those for our silica-based samples. The two fibers exhibit promising features since with only one calibration, we can obtain information about the dose rate and the dose at the same time, due to the same fiber sensitivity to both quantities. Finally, we checked the sensors response for different proton energies, obtaining a less than 15% dispersion for the Ce-doped fiber sensitivity from 19 to 73 MeV. For very high dose rate applications, the preirradiated Ce-doped optical fiber shows the most promising characteristics.

Abstract

The TOTEM experiment has made a precise measurement of the elastic proton-proton differential cross-section at the centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 8 TeV based on a high-statistics data sample obtained with the beta* = 90 optics. Both the statistical and systematic uncertainties remain below 1%, except for the t-independent contribution from the overall normalisation. This unprecedented precision allows to exclude a purely exponential differential cross-section in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.027 < |t| < 0.2 GeV^2 with a significance greater than 7 sigma. Two extended parametrisations, with quadratic and cubic polynomials in the exponent, are shown to be well compatible with the data. Using them for the differential cross-section extrapolation to t = 0, and further applying the optical theorem, yields total cross-section estimates of (101.5 +- 2.1) mb and (101.9 +- 2.1) mb, respectively, in agreement with previous TOTEM measurements., Comment: Final version published in Nuclear Physics B

7. Integrated optics Bragg grating ring resonators with Q-factor on gigascale

Abstract

In this paper we propose a new optical ring resonator with a very high Q-factor, to be used as a basic element in a wide range of physics and engineering applications. We theoretically demonstrate that in large size conventional ring resonators, a value of the Q-factor higher than 109 is achievable by exploiting the band-edge resonances in a waveguiding long period Bragg grating closed loop, excited through a bus waveguide. The dispersion introduced by the Bragg grating is responsible for a reduction in the band edge resonance linewidth, which is inversely proportional to the square of the number of periods of the grating, thus allowing the overall Q-factor to be enhanced. Numerical results show a substantial improvement in the Q-factor, giving a number of order of magnitude higher than that of a conventional large size ring resonator., Comment: The paper has been withdrawn due to the need for further investigation

8. Enhanced sensing with quasi-degenerate mode in fiber Bragg gratings ring cavities

Abstract

In this paper, we report the model and the experimental demonstration of a new optical resonator formed by inserting a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) in a closed fiber loop. The spectral characteristics of the ring depend on the reflectivity of the FBG. When the FBG reflectivity tends to zero, the overall resonant system exhibits the usual degenerate mode conditions. On the other hand, when the reflection coefficient FBG is not vanishing, the spectral features of the resonator display split resonant modes associated to the degeneracy removal of two counterpropagating modes that resonate within the cavity. The splitting magnitude is maximal in the region of maximum reflectivity of the FBG. Moreover, it varies by acting on the FBG physical parameters (e.g. strain, temperature, group index). By considering the spectral region where the splitting magnitude variation is almost maximal, i.e. quasi degenerate mode condition, we prove that the device can be used also as a slow light sensor by monitoring the power change associated with the applied strain showing, in this case, a sensitivity of 3.6x10^(6)x eps^(-1). To the best of our knowledge, this represents a factor 20 improvement over the best slow-light FBG sensors., Comment: The paper has been withdrawn due to the need for further investigation

14. Combined Photobleaching and Temperature Effects on 1550 nm Radiation-Induced Attenuation of Germanosilicate Optical Fiber

Abstract

Combined temperature and photobleaching (PB) effects on the 1550 nm radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) levels and kinetics of a commercial Ge-doped single-mode optical fiber (OF) have been investigated. The main goal of this study was to evaluate if synergetic effects could impact the performances of free-space optical communication links in space. For this, we performed accelerated (0.5 Gy(SiO2)/s) irradiation runs with 100 kV X-rays up to the total ionizing dose of 150 kGy(SiO2), varying the irradiation temperature between −80 °C and 80 °C. First, we evaluate the irradiation temperature effects: infrared RIA largely increases at negative temperatures. Second, the effects of injecting different optical powers at different temperatures have been characterized: if at temperatures exceeding room temperature (RT), PB effects are almost negligible, a PB effect is clearly observable at lower temperatures where the germanosilicate OF present large RIA levels due to the contribution of metastable defects absorbing at 1550 nm. Increasing the injected powers allows for reducing the concentration of these radiation-induced unstable defects, but not as much as thermal treatment consecutive to the irradiation. These results highlight the complex physics of radiation-induced defects absorbing at 1550 nm in Ge-doped OF, but also the vulnerability of this class of fiber for space telecommunication links. Regarding the unstable nature of point defects causing the RIA at a lower temperature, it seems possible to mitigate the loss excess by thermal cycles at RT or higher temperatures. We also could expect that our accelerated tests represent a worst-case scenario in terms of RIA levels at the maximum dose.

Abstract

Translocation-associated renal cell carcinoma involving ALK (ALK-tRCC) is a rare subtype of adult renal cell carcinoma (RCC) reported in recent years.A new Italian case of ALK-tRCC was reported. The patient was a female 44-year-old with a metastatic and pretreated RCC. The tumor showed a rearrangement of ALK gene in tumor cells detected by targeted next-generation sequencing panel. The patient received oral alectinib therapy and achieved a partial response.ALK-tRCC is a rare subtype of adult RCC. Its diagnosis is very difficult because the genomic alteration spectrum is very wide. We suggested that metastatic RCCs should be screened for uncommon genomic alterations expecially in good performance status pretreated resistant/refractory patients.

Abstract

Introduction: Data regarding prevalence and clinical management of hypertensive emergencies and urgencies are lacking and heterogeneous. Aim: To characterize patients with hypertensive emergencies and urgencies admitted to the emergency department (ED) of Niguarda hospital. In this population we also want to evaluate factors associated with organ damage, adherence to guidelines and the impact of blood pressure (BP) management on short-term (admission to hospital and hospital mortality) and medium-term outcomes (recurrence). Methods: We performed a single-center retrospective study collecting data about all adult patients with systolic blood pressure ≥ 180 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 120 mmHg admitted to our hospital’s ED during 2017. Results: Admission to ED for BP elevation were 706 (0.95% of total admission to ED), of whom 34.8% were hypertensive emergencies and 65.2% were hypertensive urgencies. Patients with hypertensive emergencies were older, mainly male, with more comorbidities and more symptomatic at ED admission. In the emergencies group, we observe a BP reduction rate of 18.82 ± 12.1% within 110.1 ± 11.9 min; the most used drugs were nitroglycerin, furosemide and labetalol. In the urgencies group, the BP reduction rate was 19% and the most used drug was short-acting nifedipine. Age, sex, smoking, clinical history of heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, symptoms at ED admission ad eGFR have been recognized as factors associated with organ damage. Instead, BP at ED admission and its management didn’t appear to have a significant impact on outcomes. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated good adherence to guidelines in the treatment of hypertensive emergency than of hypertensive urgencies. On the other hand, no significant association were found between the BP management in the ED and the short-term and medium-term outcomes.

Abstract

Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are highly expressed in a variety of cancer cells and are essential to their survival contributing to tumor cell propagation, metastasis, and protection against apoptosis]. Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. The current anti-cancer drugs available in market are not target specific and pose several side-effects and complications in clinical management of various forms of cancer, which highlights the urgent need for novel effective and less-toxic therapeutic approaches. Medicinal mushrooms have emerged as wonderful source of nutraceuticals, anti-oxidants, anticancer, prebiotic, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular, anti-microbial, and anti-diabetic. The ongoing research projects are aimed to promote mushrooms as new generation ‘‘biotherapeutics". The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the cold-water extracts of Pleurotus eryngii var. eryngii can affect Hsp90, 70, 60 and 27 levels in an in vitro model of colon cancer (C26 cells). Cell viability was evaluated using MTT assay after treating the cells with different concentrations of extracts (0-1.9 μg/μl) in the culture medium for 24 and 48 hours. Hsp90, 70, 60 and 27 levels were measured using western blotting and immunofluorescence analysis. Moreover, we evaluated the anticancer effect of the P. eryngii var. eryngii extract in an animal model of ectopically-implanted C26 colon carcinoma, widely used as an experimental model of cancer cachexia. We prepared a mixture of lyophilized P. eryngii var. eryngii with the mice standard diet and the animals were daily fed with ~4g of the mix until they died to draw a survival curve. Our results showed that the extract significantly decreased cells viability at 0.48 μg/μl after both 24 and 48 hours of treatments. Western blotting analysis and immunofluorescence showed that Hsp60 protein levels were down-regulate at 24h of treatment but increased after 48h. On the contrary, Hsp90, 70 and 27 protein levels did not changed. In the in vivo model, P. eryngii var. eryngii in the diet significantly extended the median survival compared to untreated mice. These preliminary results are promising for further studies to better understand the potential anticancer effect of P. eryngii var. eryngii.
