Abstract

Continuous-time quantum walks (CTQWs) on dynamic graphs, referred to as dynamic CTQWs, are a recently introduced universal model of computation that offers a new paradigm in which to envision quantum algorithms. In this work we develop a mapping from dynamic CTQWs to the gate model of computation in the form of an algorithm to convert arbitrary single edge walks and single self loop walks, which are the fundamental building blocks of dynamic CTQWs, to their circuit model counterparts. We use this mapping to introduce an arbitrary quantum state preparation framework based on dynamic CTQWs. Our approach utilizes global information about the target state, relates state preparation to finding the optimal path in a graph, and leads to optimizations in the reduction of controls that are not as obvious in other approaches. Interestingly, classical optimization problems such as the minimal hitting set, minimum spanning tree, and shortest Hamiltonian path problems arise in our framework. We test our methods against uniformly controlled rotations methods, used by Qiskit, and find ours requires fewer CX gates when the target state has a polynomial number of non-zero amplitudes., Comment: Comments are welcome!

3. Dynamic, Symmetry-Preserving, and Hardware-Adaptable Circuits for Quantum Computing Many-Body States and Correlators of the Anderson Impurity Model

Abstract

We present a hardware-reconfigurable ansatz on $N_q$-qubits for the variational preparation of many-body states of the Anderson impurity model (AIM) with $N_{\text{imp}}+N_{\text{bath}}=N_q/2$ sites, which conserves total charge and spin z-component within each variational search subspace. The many-body ground state of the AIM is determined as the minimum over all minima of $O(N_q^2)$ distinct charge-spin sectors. Hamiltonian expectation values are shown to require $\omega(N_q) < N_{\text{meas.}} \leq O(N_{\text{imp}}N_{\text{bath}})$ symmetry-preserving, parallelizable measurement circuits, each amenable to post-selection. To obtain the one-particle impurity Green's function we show how initial Krylov vectors can be computed via mid-circuit measurement and how Lanczos iterations can be computed using the symmetry-preserving ansatz. For a single-impurity Anderson model with a number of bath sites increasing from one to six, we show using numerical emulation that the ease of variational ground-state preparation is suggestive of linear scaling in circuit depth and sub-quartic scaling in optimizer complexity. We therefore expect that, combined with time-dependent methods for Green's function computation, our ansatz provides a useful tool to account for electronic correlations on early fault-tolerant processors. Finally, with a view towards computing real materials properties of interest like magnetic susceptibilities and electron-hole propagators, we provide a straightforward method to compute many-body, time-dependent correlation functions using a combination of time evolution, mid-circuit measurement-conditioned operations, and the Hadamard test.

5. Enhancing Quantum Optimization with Parity Network Synthesis

Abstract

This paper examines QAOA in the context of parity network synthesis. We propose a pair of algorithms for parity network synthesis and linear circuit inversion. Together, these algorithms can build the diagonal component of the QAOA circuit, generally the most expensive in terms of two qubit gates. We compare the CNOT count of our strategy to off-the-shelf compiler tools for random, full, and graph-based optimization problems and find that ours outperforms the alternatives., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Interacting biological systems at all organizational levels display emergent behavior. Modeling these systems is made challenging by the number and variety of biological components and interactions (from molecules in gene regulatory networks to species in ecological networks) and the often-incomplete state of system knowledge (e.g., the unknown values of kinetic parameters for biochemical reactions). Boolean networks have emerged as a powerful tool for modeling these systems. We provide a methodological overview of Boolean network models of biological systems. After a brief introduction, we describe the process of building, analyzing, and validating a Boolean model. We then present the use of the model to make predictions about the system's response to perturbations and about how to control (or at least influence) its behavior. We emphasize the interplay between structural and dynamical properties of Boolean networks and illustrate them in three case studies from disparate levels of biological organization., Comment: Review, to appear in the Cambridge Elements series

Abstract

We describe Superstaq, a quantum software platform that optimizes the execution of quantum programs by tailoring to underlying hardware primitives. For benchmarks such as the Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm and the Qubit Coupled Cluster chemistry method, we find that deep optimization can improve program execution performance by at least 10x compared to prevailing state-of-the-art compilers. To highlight the versatility of our approach, we present results from several hardware platforms: superconducting qubits (AQT @ LBNL, IBM Quantum, Rigetti), trapped ions (QSCOUT), and neutral atoms (Infleqtion). Across all platforms, we demonstrate new levels of performance and new capabilities that are enabled by deeper integration between quantum programs and the device physics of hardware., Comment: Appearing in IEEE QCE 2023 (Quantum Week) conference

Abstract

The Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) has been one of the leading candidates for near-term quantum advantage in gate-model quantum computers. From its inception, this algorithm has sparked the desire for comparison between gate-model and annealing platforms. When preparing problem statements for these algorithms, the predominant inclination has been to formulate a quadratic Hamiltonian. This paper gives an example of a graph coloring problem that, depending on its variable encoding scheme, optionally admits higher order terms. This paper presents evidence that the higher order formulation is preferable to two other encoding schemes. The evidence then motivates an analysis of the scaling behavior of QAOA in this higher order formulation for an ensemble of graph coloring problems.

Abstract

Purpose: To validate an innovative 3D volumetric method of evaluating tissue changes proposed by Lee et al in 2020 by comparing the results of this method--in which the scanned peri-implant surfaces were transformed, visualized, and analyzed as 3D objects--to the results reported by an existing method based on calculation of the mean distance between measured surfaces. The null hypothesis was that there was no statistically significant difference between the two methods. Additionally, the present study evaluated peri-implant tissue changes 5 years after single implant placement in the esthetic zone. Materials and Methods: Both methods were applied to 11 oral implant site casts (6 maxillary central incisor sites, 5 maxillary lateral incisor sites) taken from 11 patients at crown placement and at follow-up examinations 5 years later. The methods are based on digital workflows in which the reference and 5-year casts are scanned and the resulting STL files are superimposed and analyzed for three regions of interest (mesial papilla, central area, and distal papilla). The volumetric changes reported by the Lee et al method and the mean distance method were calculated and compared using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient (P < .01) and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (P < .05). Results: The correlation between the two sets of measurements was very high (Spearman rank correlation coefficient = 0.885). The new volumetric method indicated a mean volume loss of 2.82 mm3 (SD: 5.06), while the method based on the measurement of mean distance showed a mean volume loss of 2.92 mm3 (SD: 4.43; Wilcoxon signed-rank test result: P = .77). No statistically significant difference was found. The two methods gave equivalent results, and the null hypothesis was accepted.
