Once thought to be a sterile environment, it is now established that lungs are populated by various microorganisms that participate in maintaining lung function and play an important role in shaping lung immune surveillance. Although our comprehension of the molecular and metabolic interactions between microbes and lung cells is still in its infancy, any event causing a persistent qualitative or quantitative variation in the composition of lung microbiome, termed 'dysbiosis', has been virtually associated with many respiratory diseases. A deep understanding of the composition and function of the 'healthy' lung microbiota and how dysbiosis can cause or participate in disease progression will be pivotal in finding specific therapies aimed at preventing diseases and restoring lung function. Here, we review lung microbiome dysbiosis in different lung pathologies and the mechanisms by which these bacteria can cause or contribute to the severity of the disease. Furthermore, we describe how different respiratory disorders can be caused by the same pathogen, and that the real pathogenetic mechanism is not only dependent by the presence and amount of the main pathogen but can be shaped by the interaction it can build with other bacteria, fungi, and viruses present in the lung. The "2017 Survey of Faculty Attitudes on Technology" conducted by Insider Higher Ed reported on the low percentage of partnerships between university faculty and instructional designers in online course development. Experts were unsurprised because instructional designers (IDs) are underutilized, and their role in higher education is still not clear (Richardson et al., 2019). This qualitative study examined the faculty members' perceptions (n=11) about their mentorship relationships with IDs when they designed and developed asynchronous online courses together. This study also explored factors that may lead to successful mentorship relationships in which IDs are mentors and faculty members are mentees. The results of this study found that faculty perceived that working cooperatively with IDs was effective because they were able to align resources and instructional strategies with learning outcomes; they used time efficiently; and they were also able to apply acquired skills to the development of online courses. Based on semistructured interviews with the university faculty, this study revealed that motivation, open-mindedness, and working relations were the major factors that affected the cooperative mentorship relationships between faculty and IDs to produce and teach an online course of high quality. These results support findings in previous studies on the effectiveness of collaboration between faculty and IDs in higher education. Moreover, this study found evidence that cooperative mentorship relationships between university faculty and IDs can lead to the development of online courses of high quality. Higher education administration, university faculty, and IDs will benefit from the results of this study.

Virginia Gordon was a teacher, scholar, practitioner, and leader who also served as a role model and mentor to others. Her insight and research informed the many innovative initiatives she pursued on behalf of the student advising experience. Gordon's scholarly and evidence-based approach set the stage for academic advising as a field of scholarly inquiry and helped shape the growth and direction of the profession. Virginia Gordon's work was other-directed. Her goal was always to support the growth and development of others. This qualitative study tried to capture Gordon as understood by the higher education professionals who knew her, worked with her, and/or studied with her. That she was other-directed supports our view regarding Virginia Gordon as a servant leader.

Social engagement, pretend play, and concern for another's distress represent fundamental features of typical social-emotional development in the second year. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) display delays and deficits in these areas, and research on toddlers at heightened risk for ASD (HR; younger siblings of children with ASD) indicates these deficits may be apparent in toddlerhood. Prior research has examined these aspects of social-emotional development individually in HR toddlers. The present paper examines them jointly as predictors of ASD. We show that social engagement, pretend play, and empathic concern at 22-months each contribute uniquely to predicting later ASD diagnosis with high specificity and moderate sensitivity. Results have important implications for early diagnosis and intervention in young children with ASD.

The etiology of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is unknown but likely multifactorial. IC/BPS symptoms can be exacerbated by psychological stress, but underlying mechanisms remain to be defined. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channels, expressed on nerve fibers, have been implicated in bladder dysfunction and colonic hypersensitivity with stress in rodents. Histamine/H1R activation of TRPV1+ nerves increases bladder afferent fiber sensitivity to distension. TRPV1 channels are also expressed on mast cells, previously implicated in contributing to IC/BPS etiology and symptoms. We have examined the contribution of TRPV1 and mast cells to bladder dysfunction after repeated variate stress (RVS). RVS increased (P ≤ 0.05) serum and fecal corticosterone expression and induced anxiety-like behavior in wild-type (WT) mice. Intravesical instillation of the selective TRPV1 antagonist capsazepine (CPZ) rescued RVS-induced bladder dysfunction in WT mice. Trpv1 knockout (KO) mice did not increase voiding frequency with RVS and did not exhibit increased serum corticosterone expression despite exhibiting anxiety-like behavior. Mast cell-deficient mice (B6.Cg-Kitw-sh) failed to demonstrate RVS-induced increased voiding frequency or serum corticosterone expression, whereas control (no stress) mast cell-deficient mice had similar functional bladder capacity to WT mice. TRPV1 protein expression was significantly increased in the rostral lumbar (L1-L2) spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) in WT mice exposed to RVS, but no changes were observed in lumbosacral (L6-S1) spinal segments or DRG. These studies demonstrated TRPV1 and mast cell involvement in RVS-induced increased voiding frequency and suggest that TRPV1 and mast cells may be useful targets to mitigate stress-induced urinary bladder dysfunction. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Using pharmacological tools and transgenic mice in a repeated variate stress (RVS) model in female mice, we demonstrate that transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and mast cells contribute to the increased voiding frequency observed following RVS. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the number one cause of death in women. It is estimated that 44 million women in the United States are either living with or at risk for heart disease. This article highlights the recent significant progress made in improving care, clinical decision-making, and policy implications for women with CVD. We provide our perspective supported by evidence-based advances in cardiovascular research and clinical care guidelines in seven areas: (1) primary CVD prevention and community heart care, (2) secondary prevention of CVD, (3) stroke, (4) heart failure and cardiomyopathies, (5) ischemia with nonobstructive coronary artery disease, (6) spontaneous coronary artery dissection, and (7) arrhythmias and device therapies. Advances in these fields have improved the lives of women living with and at risk for heart disease. With increase awareness, partnership with national organizations, sex-specific research, and changes in policy, the morbidity and mortality of CVD in women can be further reduced.

The current study examined a new spatial integration (SI)task, based on figural rather than linguistic stimuli, tomeasure the construct of mental modeling ability.Previous tasks conflated linguistic ability with mentalmodeling ability by requiring sentence processing, whichmay have contributed to mixed findings with respect tothe relationship between mental model ability andworking memory capacity (WMC). The figural spatialintegration task produced the canonical continuity effect,such that discontinuous items had lower accuracy thancontinuous items. Furthermore, WMC and visuospatialability predicted SI task performance, and both werestronger predictors for the continuous condition. Theinteractions between predictors and task conditionssuggest reliance on heuristics and/or rehearsal duringperformance of the more difficult discontinuous items.

Children with autism spectrum disorder often demonstrate difficulties with self-regulation, although studies of this construct in young children with autism spectrum disorder are limited. In this study, developmental changes were examined using a measure of self-regulation appropriate for young children, resistance to temptation. At 22, 28, and 34 months, toddlers with an older sibling with autism spectrum disorder (high risk) and toddlers with typically developing older siblings (low risk) were presented with an appealing toy and instructed not to touch it. Observers coded whether or not children touched the toy and the strategies they used to resist touching it. At 36 months, children were assessed for autism spectrum disorder, yielding three groups: high risk children with autism spectrum disorder, high risk children without autism spectrum disorder, and low risk children. At 22 months, most children, regardless of group, touched the forbidden toy; at 28 and 34 months, many high risk children without autism spectrum disorder and low risk children resisted the temptation to touch the toy, whereas most of the children with autism spectrum disorder did not. Differences in delay strategies were also evident. Some, but not all group differences, were accounted for by differences in language ability. Results highlight one early index of impulse control that differentiates children with emerging autism spectrum disorder from age-mates prior to the third birthday.

Parents of toddlers with an older sibling with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; high risk, HR) and parents of low risk (LR) toddlers with typically-developing older siblings read a wordless picture book to their child at 22 and 28 months. Parents' and toddlers' internal state language (ISL) was coded; parents reported on toddlers' use of ISL. Diagnostic assessments conducted at 36 months identified three groups: ASD, HR-noASD, LR. Parents did not differ in overall ISL, but parents of toddlers with later ASD attempted to elicit ISL from their children less than parents of LR toddlers. Toddlers increased their use of ISL with age, but those with ASD had lower scores and less age-related improvement than children in the other two groups.

Predictions about information search behavior have beeninformed by extensive research in food foraging behavior.However, information foraging environments may differ inkey ways from food foraging environments, and thesedifferences may impact search behavior. We investigated theeffect of patch distribution (depleting or non-depleting) andability to return to previously searched patches onparticipants’ decision to switch from one patch to anotherwhile searching. Whether or not a participant could returnafter leaving a patch led to fewer samples and fewer relevantitems found. Whether or not the patches depleted and whetherit was possible to return to a patch influenced stopping rules,indicating that these factors may alter the size of theincrement applied through the Incremental Rule.

Forced vital capacity (FVC), a spirometric measure of pulmonary function, reflects lung volume and is used to diagnose and monitor lung diseases. We performed genome-wide association study meta-analysis of FVC in 52,253 individuals from 26 studies and followed up the top associations in 32,917 additional individuals of European ancestry. We found six new regions associated at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10(-8)) with FVC in or near EFEMP1, BMP6, MIR129-2-HSD17B12, PRDM11, WWOX and KCNJ2. Two loci previously associated with spirometric measures (GSTCD and PTCH1) were related to FVC. Newly implicated regions were followed up in samples from African-American, Korean, Chinese and Hispanic individuals. We detected transcripts for all six newly implicated genes in human lung tissue. The new loci may inform mechanisms involved in lung development and the pathogenesis of restrictive lung disease.

Toddlers with an older sibling with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and low risk (LR) toddlers were observed at 22, 28, and 34 months during two empathy probes: a crying baby and an adult who pretended to hurt her finger. Toddlers with a later ASD diagnosis showed less empathic concern and self-distress at each age on both empathy probes than LR toddlers. HR toddlers with no diagnosis showed growth in empathic concern between 22 and 34 months in response to the adult's pain, differing from the children with ASD, but not the LR children, by 34 months. Developmental changes in parent-rated self-understanding showed a similar pattern. Results highlight individual differences in the social development of HR toddlers.

Background: Three million U.S. women live with heart failure (HF). Purpose: This study investigated relationships among self-care activation, social support, and self-care behaviors of women living with HF. Methods: A 52-item web-based survey was completed by 246 women living with HF. Results: Women reported a mean body mass index (BMI) of 30.8 ± 7.8 kg/m2, exercising a mean 106.5 ± 141.1 min/week, and consuming 3.25 ± 1.9 mean servings fruit/vegetables each day. Significant predictors of weekly physical activity minutes included self-care activation, activities of daily living (ADLs) total score, and current tobacco use. Low self-care activation, poor self-perceived health, greater ADL limitations, and more years living with HF were statistically significantly associated with having a higher BMI. Self-perceived health status and education and income levels were significant predictors of daily fruit/vegetable servings. Discussion: Although self-care activation was positively associated with health behaviors among women living with HF, self-care management of health behaviors remained suboptimal. Evaluating self-perceived health status of women with HF may identify appropriate interventions for improving self-care behaviors. Translation to Health Education Practice: Certified Health Education Specialists are encouraged to tailor their education to raising self-care activation, improving self-perceived health, underscoring the value of tangible physical activities (climbing stairs, walking, carrying groceries), and referring women with HF to cardiac rehabilitation.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of visual loss in Western populations. Susceptibility is influenced by age, environmental and genetic factors. Known genetic risk loci do not account for all the heritability. We therefore carried out a genome-wide association study of AMD in the UK population with 893 cases of advanced AMD and 2199 controls. This showed an association with the well-established AMD risk loci ARMS2 (age-related maculopathy susceptibility 2)-HTRA1 (HtrA serine peptidase 1) (P =2.7 × 10(-72)), CFH (complement factor H) (P =2.3 × 10(-47)), C2 (complement component 2)-CFB (complement factor B) (P =5.2 × 10(-9)), C3 (complement component 3) (P =2.2 × 10(-3)) and CFI (P =3.6 × 10(-3)) and with more recently reported risk loci at VEGFA (P =1.2 × 10(-3)) and LIPC (hepatic lipase) (P =0.04). Using a replication sample of 1411 advanced AMD cases and 1431 examined controls, we confirmed a novel association between AMD and single-nucleotide polymorphisms on chromosome 6p21.3 at TNXB (tenascin XB)-FKBPL (FK506 binding protein like) [rs12153855/rs9391734; discovery P =4.3 × 10(-7), replication P =3.0 × 10(-4), combined P =1.3 × 10(-9), odds ratio (OR) = 1.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.3-1.6] and the neighbouring gene NOTCH4 (Notch 4) (rs2071277; discovery P =3.2 × 10(-8), replication P =3.8 × 10(-5), combined P =2.0 × 10(-11), OR = 1.3, 95% CI = 1.2-1.4). These associations remained significant in conditional analyses which included the adjacent C2-CFB locus. TNXB, FKBPL and NOTCH4 are all plausible AMD susceptibility genes, but further research will be needed to identify the causal variants and determine whether any of these genes are involved in the pathogenesis of AMD.
