Abstract

Researchers from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Air Force Research Laboratory in Florida, and Applied Research Associates Inc. performed experiments on the kinetics and mechanism of vinyl chloride reduction by metallic iron, and observed that the reaction rate is dependent on the amount of vinyl chloride absorbed.

Abstract

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of hydrocarbons is proposed to explain the production of non-chlorinated hydrocarbons from the interaction of chlorinated ethylenes with iron in the iron/water system of groundwater remediation. Carbide is the main source of carbon for the background hydrocarbons of the process. The carbon in the carbide is released via acid dissolution.

Abstract

Halogenated ethylenes undergo reductive beta-elimination to alkynes under environmental conditions. To test this hypothesis, zero-valent metals such as iron and zinc were used to degrade contaminants such as dichloroethylenes and chlorinated ethylenes, respectively, under controlled conditions. The results confirmed previous findings that reductive beta-elimination pathways are involved in the reaction of chloroethylenes with zero-valent metals.

Abstract

An anaerobic batch system was used to measure the sorption and reduction kinetics of trichlorotheylenes and tetrachloroethylenes with metallic iron. A generalized Langmuir isotherm expression was used to model the sorption behavior of the compounds. The results showed that reduction rates of PCE and TCE are first-order and that sorption occurs primarily in nonreactive sites.

Abstract

Scalable space-time multiresolution algorithms implemented on massively parallel computers enable large-scale molecular dynamics simulations involving up to a billion atoms, which are applied to the study of nanosystems of great technological importance. 47. Long-Segment Hirschsprung's Disease

Abstract

• We identified 21 children (14 boys and seven girls) with long-segment Hirschsprung's disease defined as aganglionosis extending proximal to the ileocecal valve. Long-segment Hirschsprung's disease is difficult to diagnose and treat; symptoms may be mild, and diagnosis delayed. Abdominal distention and constipation or delayed passage of meconium are the most common symptoms. Radiologic studies are unreliable in establishing the diagnosis. The morbidity rate is high because of the high transition zone and short gut. The long-term outcome of patients after the standard Duhamel procedure is satisfactory, except with extremely high transition zones. Pull-through procedures should not be performed in the small infant, but should be delayed until patients are old enough to be continent.(Arch Surg. 1992;127:1047-1051)
