Abstract

To promote safe and positive health outcomes by utilizing culturally relevant evidence-based interventions for immigrant and refugee women survivors of intimate partner violence, their active participation in research is critical. With 43.6 million immigrants and refugees living in the United States, there is a need for research studies to eliminate health disparities in these populations. However, barriers to recruiting and retaining these populations in research prevent the provision of quality and culturally informed services to meet their needs. The aim of this article is to discuss the recruitment and retention strategies employed and analyze the methodological and ethical challenges in the context of the weWomen Study. The use of a multifaceted approach informed by best practices maximized recruitment efforts and active participation that generated high numbers of immigrant and refugee women participants. The study also substantiated the need for more community-based participatory approaches to engage community members in the development of culturally appropriate approaches that instill a sense of ownership over the research process. Active research participation of immigrant and refugee survivors will help investigators understand their unique needs and facilitate the implementation of targeted evidence-based interventions. 9. Evaluation of a Living Building using Dynamic LCA

Abstract

Dynamic life cycle assessment (DLCA) was used to evaluate the environmental performance of a zero-energy building, the Center for Sustainable Landscapes at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, PA. The DLCA model accounted for temporally and spatially explicit modeling of the avoided emissions from on-site renewable energy systems - geothermal heat storage, and photovoltaic electricity generation. Real building operational data was used to support the DLCA for the year 2013, including hourly data from July to December. The building data were combined with electrical grid emissions from national, regional and local sections of the electrical grid. Local electrical grid data were evaluated at both monthly and hourly intervals. For all spatial and temporal scales examined, avoided impacts due to reduced demand from the electrical grid were compared with embodied energy and impacts of the materials used to construct the CSL building’s on-site renewable energy systems. The time when the cumulative avoided impacts were equal to the embodied impacts in the materials was considered as the payback time in each impact category. For the categories of fossil energy use, global warming potential, and acidification potential, payback times were calculated to be in the range of 3 to 8 years, with the local electrical grid producing the longer payback times due to its lower fossil energy content and emissions stemming from its heavy reliance on nuclear power generation. Changing the evaluation from a monthly to an hourly time step changed the payback time in the fossil energy and global warming categories by approximately 10%, while having no effect on acidification. Future research is needed for environmental impacts in other categories, including indoor impacts, and the development of temporally and spatially specific impact assessment characterization factors.

11. Advancing Life Cycle Assessment: Perspectives from the Building and Healthcare Industries

Abstract

This research investigates the development of life cycle assessment (LCA) in the building and healthcare industries. The ultimate goal is to advance necessary contributions and provide strategic recommendations on the development of LCA in both industries. Because the building industry has progressed farther in terms of environmental and economic assessments than the healthcare industry, the lessons learned from past implementation and market adoption of building LCAs is essential for the future of healthcare LCAs. To achieve the goal of this dissertation, the evolution of LCA in each industry was studied, followed by recommendations and strategies for future sustainable development. To understand the building industry, three different studies are presented. The first building LCA study focused on building materials, comparing green building materials to traditional building materials and concluding that there is a quantitative need for LCA integration in the zero-energy building definition. The second LCA study integrated LCA with life cycle cost assessment (LCCA) as a complimentary tool for building owner decision-making. The last LCA study builds on the LCA/LCCA study and developed an integrated pathway linking LCA with a host of other environmental and economic tools that broaden the scope of building projects. To understand the healthcare industry, three different studies are presented. The use of LCA in the healthcare industry is relatively new; therefore the first study compared two different birth procedures to determine the high-impact areas within healthcare. The second LCA study focused on disposable products discussing streamlining efforts and strategies that could be applied universally across the healthcare industry.
