Abstract

Plastic pollution is distributed patchily around the worlds oceans. Likewise, marine organisms that are vulnerable to plastic ingestion or entanglement have uneven distributions. Understanding where wildlife encounters plastic is crucial for targeting research and mitigation. Oceanic seabirds, particularly petrels, frequently ingest plastic, are highly threatened, and cover vast distances during foraging and migration. However, the spatial overlap between petrels and plastics is poorly understood. Here we combine marine plastic density estimates with individual movement data for 7137 birds of 77 petrel species to estimate relative exposure risk. We identify high exposure risk areas in the Mediterranean and Black seas, and the northeast Pacific, northwest Pacific, South Atlantic and southwest Indian oceans. Plastic exposure risk varies greatly among species and populations, and between breeding and non-breeding seasons. Exposure risk is disproportionately high for Threatened species. Outside the Mediterranean and Black seas, exposure risk is highest in the high seas and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of the USA, Japan, and the UK. Birds generally had higher plastic exposure risk outside the EEZ of the country where they breed. We identify conservation and research priorities, and highlight that international collaboration is key to addressing the impacts of marine plastic on wide-ranging species.

Abstract

This paper completes the classification of maximal unrefinable partitions, extending a previous work of Aragona et al. devoted only to the case of triangular numbers. We show that the number of maximal unrefinable partitions of an integer coincides with the number of suitable partitions into distinct parts, depending on the distance from the successive triangular number.

Abstract

Unrefinable partitions are a subset of partitions into distinct parts which satisfy an additional unrefinability property. More precisely, being an unrefinable partition means that none of the parts can be written as the sum of smaller integers without introducing a repetition. We address the algorithmic aspects of unrefinable partitions, such as testing whether a given partition is unrefinable or not and enumerating all the partitions whose sum is a given integer. We design two algorithms to solve the two mentioned problems and we discuss their complexity.

Abstract

A partition into distinct parts is refinable if one of its parts $a$ can be replaced by two different integers which do not belong to the partition and whose sum is $a$, and it is unrefinable otherwise. Clearly, the condition of being unrefinable imposes on the partition a non-trivial limitation on the size of the largest part and on the possible distributions of the parts. We prove a $O(n^{1/2})$-upper bound for the largest part in an unrefinable partition of $n$, and we call maximal those which reach the bound. We show a complete classification of maximal unrefinable partitions for triangular numbers, proving that if $n$ is even there exists only one maximal unrefinable partition of $n(n+1)/2$, and that if $n$ is odd the number of such partitions equals the number of partitions of $\lceil n/2\rceil$ into distinct parts. In the second case, an explicit bijection is provided.

11. An Explainable AI System for Automated COVID-19 Assessment and Lesion Categorization from CT-scans

Abstract

COVID-19 infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 pathogen is a catastrophic pandemic outbreak all over the world with exponential increasing of confirmed cases and, unfortunately, deaths. In this work we propose an AI-powered pipeline, based on the deep-learning paradigm, for automated COVID-19 detection and lesion categorization from CT scans. We first propose a new segmentation module aimed at identifying automatically lung parenchyma and lobes. Next, we combined such segmentation network with classification networks for COVID-19 identification and lesion categorization. We compare the obtained classification results with those obtained by three expert radiologists on a dataset consisting of 162 CT scans. Results showed a sensitivity of 90\% and a specificity of 93.5% for COVID-19 detection, outperforming those yielded by the expert radiologists, and an average lesion categorization accuracy of over 84%. Results also show that a significant role is played by prior lung and lobe segmentation that allowed us to enhance performance by over 20 percent points. The interpretation of the trained AI models, moreover, reveals that the most significant areas for supporting the decision on COVID-19 identification are consistent with the lesions clinically associated to the virus, i.e., crazy paving, consolidation and ground glass. This means that the artificial models are able to discriminate a positive patient from a negative one (both controls and patients with interstitial pneumonia tested negative to COVID) by evaluating the presence of those lesions into CT scans. Finally, the AI models are integrated into a user-friendly GUI to support AI explainability for radiologists, which is publicly available at http://perceivelab.com/covid-ai.

Abstract

Current approaches for dynamic profiling of single cells rely on dissociated cultures, which lack important biological features existing in tissues. Organotypic slice cultures preserve aspects of structural and synaptic organisation within the brain and are amenable to microscopy, but established techniques are not well adapted for high throughput or longitudinal single cell analysis. Here we developed a custom-built, automated confocal imaging platform, with improved organotypic slice culture and maintenance. The approach enables fully automated image acquisition and four-dimensional tracking of morphological changes within individual cells in organotypic cultures from rodent and human primary tissues for at least 3 weeks. To validate this system, we analysed neurons expressing a disease-associated version of huntingtin (HTT586Q138-EGFP), and observed that they displayed hallmarks of Huntington's disease and died sooner than controls. By facilitating longitudinal single-cell analyses of neuronal physiology, our system bridges scales necessary to attain statistical power to detect developmental and disease phenotypes.

47. High similarity and high frequency of virulence genes among SalmonellaDublin strains isolated over a 33-year period in Brazil

Abstract

SalmonellaDublin is a strongly adapted serovar that causes enteritis and/or systemic disease with high rates of mortality in cattle and occasionally infects humans. Despite the importance of this serovar, there is a lack of studies in Brazil. The aim of this study was to characterize the genetic diversity of 112 S.Dublin strains isolated from humans and animals in Brazil by CRISPR and CRISPR-MVLST and the relatedness among strains by MLST. In addition, the frequency of some important virulence genes was verified. The strains studied belonged to nine different sequence types, being all of them single- or double-locus variants of the ST10. CRISPR discriminated the strains into 69 subtypes with a similarity ≥ 84.4% and CRISPR-MVLST into 72 subtypes with a similarity ≥ 84.7%. The virulence genes ratB, lpfA, mgtC, avrA, sopB, sopE2, sifA, sseA, ssrA, csgA, fliC, and sinHwere found in all the strains studied, while spvB, spvC, sodCl, rpoS, sipA, sipD, invA, and hilAwere detected in ≥ 93.7% of the strains. In conclusion, the high similarity among the strains reinforces the clonal nature of the strains of this serovar that may have descended from a common ancestor that little differed over 33 years in Brazil. CRISPR and CRISPR-MVLST showed to be good alternatives to type S.Dublin strains. MLST suggested that S.Dublin strains from Brazil were phylogenetically related to strains from other parts of the globe. Moreover, the high frequency of virulence genes among the strains studied reinforces the capacity of S.Dublin to cause invasive diseases.

48. A New Calculation Strategy for Molten Salt Reactor Neutronic–Thermal-Hydraulic Analysis Implemented with APOLLO3® and TRUST/TrioCFD

Abstract

AbstractMolten salt nuclear reactors (MSRs) constitute a promising technology to produce safe, reliable, abundant low-carbon energy. To design MSR systems and perform safety analyses on them, numerical simulation is a powerful tool. Here, we implemented a coupling between several solvers of the deterministic neutronics code APOLLO3® (the MINARET SNtransport and the MINOS diffusion and SPn-simplified transport solvers) and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code TRUST/TrioCFD, both developed at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The code coupling is orchestrated using the dedicated C3PO library of the open-source SALOME platform. A new code-coupling strategy is employed whereby the delayed neutron precursor concentrations are computed by the CFD code, which eases the use of traditional deterministic neutronics codes. We verified the correctness of our implementation by performing a numerical benchmark dedicated to fast spectrum MSRs originally devised by the French National Center for Scientific Research. The numerical results we obtained are in excellent agreement with those obtained by recent MSR-dedicated multiphysics simulation tools. This study provides a new convenient neutronic–thermal-hydraulic coupling strategy for MSR core simulation.
