2. What drives the Coronal Lines? Resolving the forbidden, high-ionization emission regions in a sample of AGNs

Abstract

Emission-line studies in the active galactic nuclei (AGNs), particularly those utilizing high spatial resolution, provide the most accurate method to determine critical quantities of the central engine and of the gas a few tens of parsecs away. Using seeing-limited data with spectroscopy, we have explored the extended narrow-line region for a sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with strong, forbidden emission lines that have high-ionization potentials (IP $\gtrsim$ 100 eV). We have studied the optical and near-infrared spectra for these AGNs, extracted and compared their spectral energy distributions, and put constraints on the physical conditions of the region producing the coronal lines. We have realized a novel black hole mass scaling relation with one such prominent coronal line - [Si VI] 1.963 microns, over the 10$^6$ - 10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$ interval, that suggests photoionization by the continuum produced by the accretion disk is the primary physical process at play here. We perform a detailed parameter space study to optimize the emission from these coronal lines in terms of fundamental black hole parameters and test predictions that can be used to measure the kinematics of the extended X-ray emission gas. With the successful launch and first light of the JWST, we are well-poised to refine our findings using the superb angular resolution of the telescope that will allow us to map the inner few parsecs to the central supermassive black holes. This opens up the study of the higher ionization lines that will be spatially resolved by JWST, expanding our sample to tens of hundreds of AGNs, and putting firmer constraints on the physical conditions in the coronal line region., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, version matches the published version in Proceedings of the XLV Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Astronomical Society

Abstract

Among mammals, the order Primates is exceptional in having a high taxonomic richness in which the taxa are arboreal, semiterrestrial, or terrestrial. Although habitual terrestriality is pervasive among the apes and African and Asian monkeys (catarrhines), it is largely absent among monkeys of the Americas (platyrrhines), as well as galagos, lemurs, and lorises (strepsirrhines), which are mostly arboreal. Numerous ecological drivers and species-specific factors are suggested to set the conditions for an evolutionary shift from arboreality to terrestriality, and current environmental conditions may provide analogous scenarios to those transitional periods. Therefore, we investigated predominantly arboreal, diurnal primate genera from the Americas and Madagascar that lack fully terrestrial taxa, to determine whether ecological drivers (habitat canopy cover, predation risk, maximum temperature, precipitation, primate species richness, human population density, and distance to roads) or species-specific traits (body mass, group size, and degree of frugivory) associate with increased terrestriality. We collated 150,961 observation hours across 2,227 months from 47 species at 20 sites in Madagascar and 48 sites in the Americas. Multiple factors were associated with ground use in these otherwise arboreal species, including increased temperature, a decrease in canopy cover, a dietary shift away from frugivory, and larger group size. These factors mostly explain intraspecific differences in terrestriality. As humanity modifies habitats and causes climate change, our results suggest that species already inhabiting hot, sparsely canopied sites, and exhibiting more generalized diets, are more likely to shift toward greater ground use.

Abstract

Catheter ablation is currently the only curative treatment for scar-related ventricular tachycardias (VTs). However, not only are ablation procedures long, with relatively high risk, but success rates are punitively low, with frequent VT recurrence. Personalized in-silico approaches have the opportunity to address these limitations. However, state-of-the-art reaction diffusion (R-D) simulations of VT induction and subsequent circuits used for in-silico ablation target identification require long execution times, along with vast computational resources, which are incompatible with the clinical workflow. Here, we present the Virtual Induction and Treatment of Arrhythmias (VITA), a novel, rapid and fully automated computational approach that uses reaction-Eikonal methodology to induce VT and identify subsequent ablation targets. The rationale for VITA is based on finding isosurfaces associated with an activation wavefront that splits in the ventricles due to the presence of an isolated isthmus of conduction within the scar; once identified, each isthmus may be assessed for their vulnerability to sustain a reentrant circuit, and the corresponding exit site automatically identified for potential ablation targeting. VITA was tested on a virtual cohort of 7 post-infarcted porcine hearts and the results compared to R-D simulations. Using only a standard desktop machine, VITA could detect all scar-related VTs, simulating activation time maps and ECGs (for clinical comparison) as well as computing ablation targets in 48 minutes. The comparable VTs probed by the R-D simulations took 68.5 hours on 256 cores of high-performance computing infrastructure. The set of lesions computed by VITA was shown to render the ventricular model VT-free. VITA could be used in near real-time as a complementary modality aiding in clinical decision-making in the treatment of post-infarction VTs.

16. Identification of Histological Threshold Concepts in Health Sciences Curricula: Students' Perception

Abstract

Students' metacognitive skills and perceptions are considered important variables for high-quality learning. In this study, students' perceptions were used to identify histological threshold concepts (integrative, irreversible, transformative, and troublesome) in three health sciences curricula. A specific questionnaire was developed and validated to characterize students' perceptions of histological threshold concepts. A sample of 410 undergraduate students enrolled in the dentistry, medicine, and pharmacy degree programs participated in the study. Concepts assessed in the study were clustered to ten categories (factors) by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Concepts linked to tissue organization and tissue functional states received the highest scores from students in all degree programs, suggesting that the process of learning histology requires the integration of both static concepts related to the constituent elements of tissues and dynamic concepts such as stem cells as a tissue renewal substrate, or the euplasic, proplasic and retroplasic states of tissues. The complexity of integrating static and dynamic concepts may pose a challenging barrier to the comprehension of histology. In addition, several differences were detected among the students in different degree programs. Dentistry students more often perceived morphostructural concepts as threshold concepts, whereas medical students highlighted concepts related to two-dimensional microscopic identification. Lastly, pharmacy students identified concepts related to tissue general activity as critical for the comprehension and learning of histology. The identification of threshold concepts through students' perceptions is potentially useful to improve the teaching and learning process in health sciences curricula.

Abstract

In animal behavior studies, a common goal is to investigate the causal pathways between an exposure and outcome, and a mediator that lies in between. Causal mediation analysis provides a principled approach for such studies. Although many applications involve longitudinal data, the existing causal mediation models are not directly applicable to settings where the mediators are measured on irregular time grids. In this paper, we propose a causal mediation model that accommodates longitudinal mediators on arbitrary time grids and survival outcomes simultaneously. We take a functional data analysis perspective and view longitudinal mediators as realizations of underlying smooth stochastic processes. We define causal estimands of direct and indirect effects accordingly and provide corresponding identification assumptions. We employ a functional principal component analysis approach to estimate the mediator process, and propose a Cox hazard model for the survival outcome that flexibly adjusts the mediator process. We then derive a g-computation formula to express the causal estimands using the model coefficients. The proposed method is applied to a longitudinal data set from the Amboseli Baboon Research Project to investigate the causal relationships between early adversity, adult physiological stress responses, and survival among wild female baboons. We find that adversity experienced in early life has a significant direct effect on females' life expectancy and survival probability, but find little evidence that these effects were mediated by markers of the stress response in adulthood. Abstract

Is it possible to slow the rate of ageing, or do biological constraints limit its plasticity? We test the 'invariant rate of ageing' hypothesis, which posits that the rate of ageing is relatively fixed within species, with a collection of 39 human and nonhuman primate datasets across seven genera. We first recapitulate, in nonhuman primates, the highly regular relationship between life expectancy and lifespan equality seen in humans. We next demonstrate that variation in the rate of ageing within genera is orders of magnitude smaller than variation in pre-adult and age-independent mortality. Finally, we demonstrate that changes in the rate of ageing, but not other mortality parameters, produce striking, species-atypical changes in mortality patterns. Abstract

Primate offspring often depend on their mothers well beyond the age of weaning, and offspring that experience maternal death in early life can suffer substantial reductions in fitness across the life span. Here, we leverage data from eight wild primate populations (seven species) to examine two underappreciated pathways linking early maternal death and offspring fitness that are distinct from direct effects of orphaning on offspring survival. First, we show that, for five of the seven species, offspring face reduced survival during the years immediately preceding maternal death, while the mother is still alive. Second, we identify an intergenerational effect of early maternal loss in three species (muriquis, baboons, and blue monkeys), such that early maternal death experienced in one generation leads to reduced offspring survival in the next. Our results have important implications for the evolution of slow life histories in primates, as they suggest that maternal condition and survival are more important for offspring fitness than previously realized.

50. Enhancing rare cancer care in developing countries through patient advocacy: insights from the Desmoid Tumor Brazilian Association.

Abstract

Introduction: Desmoid tumors are soft-tissue neoplasms that can have profound impacts on the lives of people living with such diseases. As they are rare tumors, patients often have difficulty finding teams specialized in sarcomas and support networks. In low- and middle-income countries, the challenges are exacerbated due to a need for established networks and medication access. Discussion: In this setting, patient advocacy groups are important in supporting affected people. To this end, the Desmoid Tumor Brazilian Association (DTBA) was established to help mitigate those challenges. This paper highlights the perspectives of patients with desmoid tumors living in Brazil, obtained in a nationwide survey, and discusses aspects related to access to specialists, medications, education, and awareness in Brazil. Conclusions: The most commonly reported challenges in Brazil are access to educational material and specialists. The DTA continues to strive to improve support for people living in Brazil through initiatives such as Scientific and Educational Meetings, improving awareness, fostering science, and working on methods to facilitate access to medication and specialists.
