2. New York geologics : retrospective readings from the Anthropocene of late 20th century Manhattanism : Woods/Koolhaas/Tschumi

Abstract

Conventional representations of Manhattan often reinforce its reading as an urban condition resulting from neoliberal forms of capitalism. These forces have expanded the city along an orthogonal grid and continuously extrude its architectures. Stemming from a close examination of the ontological and epistemological shifts caused by the Anthropocene theory and the debates it has sparked over the last two decades, the thesis challenges some of these conventions and experiments with more nuanced understandings of Manhattan as a coalescence of island-territories sustained by conditions of relationality, reciprocity and connectivity with the geologic context in which they exist. With a focus on representation as a form of synthesis and construction of knowledge, the research investigates Manhattan as a conceptual laboratory of ideas to explore how notions of ground, scale, or frame may affect and disrupt readings of temporal and material contexts in the city. The investigation supports the development and application of design operations that unsettle representation and conventional city epistemologies. Methodologically, the study focuses on three seminal speculative architectural works - often recognised as manifestos - developed in the last three decades of the 20th century: Delirious New York (Rem Koolhaas, 1978); The Manhattan Transcripts (Bernard Tschumi, 1981); and Lower Manhattan (Lebbeus Woods, 1999). These pieces become conceptual probes to produce a series of interrelated experimentations curated as physical and virtual installations and proposed as alternative fragments of an imagined Manhattan in the exhibition space. They provide central support for critical and creative explorations that offer a retrospective contextualisation and repositioning of the architectural manifestos from the contemporary perspectives offered by the Anthropocene. The design processes in the thesis articulate an idea of practice as a way of thinking and crafting for noticing, bearing witness, and revealing alternative possibilities in the city. They aim to sustain the thesis' theoretical contribution to the already established Anthropocene debate around supposed divisions between nature and culture, or the proposed collision between human and earth temporalities.

16. Superconducting proximity effect in InAsSb surface quantum wells with in-situ Al contact

Abstract

We demonstrate robust superconducting proximity effect in InAs$_{0.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$ quantum wells grown with epitaxial Al contact, which has important implications for mesoscopic and topological superconductivity. Unlike more commonly studied InAs and InSb semiconductors, bulk InAs$_{0.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$ supports stronger spin-orbit coupling and larger $g$-factor. However, these potentially desirable properties have not been previously measured in epitaxial heterostructures with superconductors, which could serve as a platform for fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. Through structural and transport characterization we observe high-quality interfaces and strong spin-orbit coupling. We fabricate Josephson junctions based on InAs$_{0.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$ quantum wells and observe strong proximity effect. These junctions exhibit product of normal resistance and critical current, $I_{c}R_{N} = \SI{270}{\micro V}$, and excess current, $I_{ex}R_{N} = \SI{200}{\micro V}$ at contact separations of 500~nm. Both of these quantities demonstrate a robust and long-range proximity effect with highly-transparent contacts.

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate ultralong spin lifetimes of electrons in the one-dimensional (1D) quantum limit of semiconductor nanowires. Optically probing single wires of different diameters reveals an increase in the spin relaxation time by orders of magnitude as the electrons become increasingly confined until only a single 1D subband is populated. We find the observed spin lifetimes of more than $200\,\textrm{ns}$ to result from the robustness of 1D electrons against major spin relaxation mechanisms, highlighting the promising potential of these wires for long-range transport of coherent spin information., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

42. Spin-orbit coupling effects in zinc-blende InSb and wurtzite InAs nanowires: Realistic calculations with multiband $\vec{k} \cdot \vec{p}$ method

Abstract

A systematic numerical investigation of spin-orbit fields in the conduction bands of III-V semiconductor nanowires is performed. Zinc-blende InSb nanowires are considered along [001], [011], and [111] directions, while wurtzite InAs nanowires are studied along [0001] and [10$\overline{1}$0] or [11$\overline{2}$0] directions. Realistic multiband $\vec{k} \cdot \vec{p}\,$ Hamiltonians are solved by using plane-wave expansions of real-space parameters. In all cases the linear and cubic spin-orbit coupling parameters are extracted for nanowire widths from 30 to 100 nm. Typical spin-orbit energies are on the $\mu$eV scale, except for InAs wurtzite nanowires grown along [10$\overline{1}$0] or [11$\overline{2}$0], in which the spin-orbit energy is about meV, largely independent of the wire diameter. Significant spin-orbit coupling is obtained by applying a transverse electric field, causing the Rashba effect. For an electric field of about 4 mV/nm the obtained spin-orbit energies are about 1 meV for both materials in all investigated growth directions. The most favorable system, in which the spin-orbit effects are maximal, are InAs WZ nanowires grown along [1010] or [11$\overline{2}$0], since here spin-orbit energies are giant (meV) already in the absence of electric field. The least favorable are InAs WZ nanowires grown along [0001], since here even the electric field does not increase the spin-orbit energies beyond 0.1 meV. The presented results should be useful for investigations of optical orientation, spin transport, weak localization, and superconducting proximity effects in semiconductor nanowires.

Abstract

Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) nanofibers embedded with borate glasses of 45B5 composition doped with Co2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+(46.1 B₂O₃26.9‐X CaO24.4 Na₂O2.6 P₂O₅, X CoO/CuO/ZnO mol % (X = 0–5)) were produced by electrospinning for wound healing applications. Prior to their addition, the glasses exhibited two broad halos typical of a vitreous borate network, which were mainly composed of ring‐type metaborate structural units. The particle distribution in the PHBV nanofibers embedded with 45B5 borate bioactive glasses is present in isolated and agglomerated states, being partially coated by a polymeric layer—except for the cobalt‐doped glass, which resulted in a successful encapsulation with 100% embedding efficiency. The incorporation of the glasses reduced the PHBV crystallinity degree and its decomposition temperature, as well as its mechanical properties, including Young's modulus, tensile strength, and elongation at break. The neat PHBV fibers and those containing the cobalt‐doped glasses demonstrated great cytocompatibility with human keratinocytes (HaCat), as suggested by the high cell viability after 7 days of exposure. Further studies are needed to fully understand the wound healing potential of these fibers, but our results significantly contribute to the area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
