5. Changes in the microstructure of compacted bentonite caused by heating and hydration

Abstract

Two twin 40-cm long columns of compacted FEBEX bentonite were tested in Teflon cells; water was supplied through the top surface of the columns and in one of them a heater was placed at the base and set to 100°C. The purpose of these tests was to simulate the behaviour of an engineered barrier in a radioactive waste repository and investigate the effect of the thermal gradient on saturation. In particular, changes in the pore size distribution and interlayer size have been investigated in this work. The thermal gradient had a strong influence on the water intake and distribution. Water content and dry density gradients persisted in the two columns after 12 years of testing. These changes gave place to the modification of the bentonite microstructure, overall increasing the microstructural void ratio and the proportion of adsorbed, interlayer water.

Abstract

We present results from high signal-to-noise optical spectropolarimetric observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxies NGC783 and Mrk509 in the 3500-7000 A range. We find complex structure in the polarized emission for both objects. In particular, Position Angle (PA) changes across the Balmer lines show a distinctive 'M'-shaped profile that had not been observed in this detail before, but could represent a common trait in Seyfert 1 galaxies. In fact, while this shape is observed in all Balmer lines in NGC3783, Mrk509 transitions into a 'M'-shaped PA profile for higher transitions lines. We have modeled the observed profiles using the STOKES radiative transfer code and assuming that the scattering region is co-spatial with the BLR and outflowing. Abstract

Vacuum window research continues at Fermilab and this paper will examine cost effective, consistent designs which can have a huge impact on accelerator laboratories in terms of safety and cost. Issues such as the design, materials, analysis, testing and fabrication are addressed, including beam scattering plots and materials cost-benefit analysis and examining different materials which can potentially be substitutes for beryllium. A previous research paper has examined current fabrication and design techniques and also failure modes at Fermi, and this paper examines previous research in addition to emerging technologies. Many different paths have been taken by HEP Laboratories throughout the world with varying success. The history of vacuum window development is extensive and not well defined, and a matrix of what research has already been done on materials and joint design for vacuum windows will be shown. This report finally includes a treatise for vacuum window technology and a view towards emerging designs and materials and discusses future advances of research such as fabrication techniques including additive manufacturing and ultrasonic welding. Further exploration into these would prove beneficial to developing vacuum windows that are safer and stronger while being more transparent to the beam., Comment: 4 pages, IPAC 2019

Abstract

Introducción: El traumatismo dentoalveolar es una lesión frecuente en la infancia y un problema de salud pública. Un resultado favorable dependerá del conocimiento previo sobre su manejo. Objetivo: Describir el nivel de conocimientos sobre traumatismos dentoalveolar en docentes de establecimientos educacionales de la Región Metropolitana, durante el año 2020. Métodos: Estudio transversal en una muestra de 384 docentes de establecimientos educacionales en la Región Metropolitana, elegidos de forma aleatoria. Se midió el conocimiento sobre manejo de traumatismo dentoalveolar mediante cuestionario de tres dimensiones. La primera registra datos personales y experiencias previas en traumatismo dentoalveolar; la segunda mide conocimiento general, lugar de atención, manejo del tiempo, acondicionamiento, transporte y tipos de dentición. El puntaje clasifica en buen nivel (16 – 20), regular (8 a15.9), deficiente (0 – 7.9). La tercera dimensión valora la actitud frente al trauma de avulsión y fractura dentaria mediante dos casos hipotéticos y cuatro enunciados. Se describió nivel de conocimientos en tablas y gráficos. Estudio aprobado por Comité de Ética Científico. Resultados: La muestra estudiada fue mayoritariamente de mujeres (89,3%), edad media 37.1± 9.8 años, principalmente de educación preescolar, 11.6 ± 8.8 años experiencia laboral. El nivel de conocimiento fue deficiente en 56.8 %, sin diferencias por sexo, edad, experiencia laboral y lugar de trabajo. Un tercio califica con actitud adecuada frente al trauma de avulsión dentaria, valor que aumenta al enfrentar una fractura dentaria, 67.7 %. Conclusión: Este estudio muestra un conocimiento deficiente sobre traumatismo dentoalveolar en docentes, lo que puede condicionar un mal pronóstico del diente.

Abstract

Citrus dwarfing viroid (CDVd) infection of navel orange trees (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.) on ‘Rich 16-6’ trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.) rootstock has been previously reported to reduce canopy volume by approximately 50%. We demonstrated that the reduction in tree size of CDVd-infected citrus resulted from a >20% reduction in the apical growth of individual shoots within the tree canopy. We also demonstrated that the reduced canopy volume of the CDVd-infected trees is a long lasting phenotype comparable to that of ‘Flying Dragon’ rootstock, which is known to reduce citrus tree size.

Abstract

Introduction: The multiple forced expiratory maneuvers that must be performed during methacholine test require a high degree of collaboration and can lead to fatigue. However, impulse oscillometry (IOS) is a noninvasive test, quick and easy to perform, that does not require effort-dependent maneuvers. Objectives: The primary endpoint was to evaluate the relationship between IOS and spirometry during the methacholine test. The secondary endpoint was to study the predictive value of baseline IOS in the development of bronchial hyperreactivity. Methods: Observational, prospective, cross-sectional study, with recruitment of consecutive patients from the pulmonology department with clinical suspicion of bronchial asthma with negative bronchodilator test and normal FeNO. Results: Twenty-five patients were included, with a mean age of 49 ± 18 years. Thirteen patients (52%) had a positive methacholine test. The correlation between IOS indices and FEV1 was significant (p < 0.05) in all cases. The indices with the highest predictive power were R5-20 and AX. The optimal cutoff points were an increase of greater than 32.96% in R5, greater than 120.83% for X5, an increase of 30.30 [kPa l-1s-1] in R5-20, and an increase of 1.01 [kPa l−1] for AX. Baseline oscillometry demonstrated a strong predictive value in the development of bronchial hyperreactivity, with a sensitivity of 61.5% and a specificity of 91.7%, using the cut-off point of 160.0% for R5. Conclusions: IOS may be a valuable alternative to forced spirometry in detecting bronchial hyperreactivity during the methacholine test, showing a good correlation between both tests. Abstract

We present a matrix technique to obtain the spectrum and the analytical index of some elliptic operators defined on compact Riemannian manifolds. The method uses matrix representations of the derivative which yield exact values for the derivative of a trigonometric polynomial. These matrices can be used to find the exact spectrum of an elliptic operator in particular cases and in general, to give insight into the properties of the solution of the spectral problem. As examples, the analytical index and the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on the torus and on the sphere are obtained and as an application of this technique, the spectrum of the Dirac-Kahler operator on the sphere is explored., Comment: 11 pages
