Thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. are the leading causes of food-borne diarrhoea in humans with most cases attributed to C. jejuni, and C. coli. Although chicken meat is considered the main source of infection in humans, the significance of other sources for campylobacteriosis in humans is less understood. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. in chicken, beef, pork, and sheep liver in Ireland and to carry out whole genome sequencing (WGS) on the resulting isolates to characterize them molecularly. In addition, genome sequences of Irish clinical isolates were downloaded from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and compared with sequences from this study. The prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in chicken, beef, pork and sheep liver was 70 %, 4.4 %, 16 % and 80.0 %, respectively. Chi-Squared analysis indicated that the statistical differences in positivity rates between the four species were significant (P < 0.001). Amongst the 81 (43 %) positive liver samples, speciation revealed an overall predominance of C. jejuni (62 %), followed by C. coli (48 %) and C. lari (1 %) in all meat types except pork. Nine (11 %) samples were confirmed positive for more than one Campylobacter species with five of these nine samples recovered from sheep livers. Following analysis of WGS data, a wide range of diversity was observed and where clusters were identified, all were confined to the same animal species. No AMR genes were identified in the C. lari isolate, while C. jejuni and C. coli isolates were found to harbour resistance genes for tetracyclines, beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, and quinolones. Two clusters were identified between isolates from this study and human clinical data and the most prevalent clonal complex was CC-21, identified in this study and in clinical isolates. These results highlight the role of liver as a potential source of human Campylobacter infection. Background: Thermophilic Campylobacter species are important causes of human gastroenteritis and inappropriate use of antimicrobials has led to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In Rwanda, data is limited on the prevalence and AMR carriage rate of Campylobacter strains. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Campylobacter species among isolates obtained from different clinical settings in Kigali city, Rwanda., Methods: This cross-sectional study used a purposive sampling method to collect 385 stool samples from consenting patients attending the Microbiology Department at Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK), Nyarugenge District Hospital, Muhima and Biryogo Health Centers (HC). Campylobacter species were isolated using culture and characterized with biochemical tests and multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for species confirmation. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) with six antimicrobials [ciprofloxacin (CIP), tetracycline (TET), chloramphenicol (CHL), streptomycin (STR), erythromycin (ERY), and gentamicin (GEN)] was carried out by using Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion., Results: The overall prevalence of Campylobacter spp. was 7.0% (27/385) and the highest prevalence of 77.8% (21/27) was recorded at Biryogo HC. The prevalence of C. jejuni and C. coli were 92.6% (25/27) and 7.4% (2/27), respectively. Infection was significantly associated with diarrhea (p < 0.0001). Campylobacter isolates showed high resistance to STR (85.2%, 23/27), followed by ERY (66.7%, 18/27), and CIP (37.1%, 10/27). The isolates were sensitive to CHL at 88.9% (24/27), TET at 66.7% (18/27), and GEN at 66.7% (18/27)., Conclusion: The prevalence of campylobacteriosis in Kigali City is not negligible and is associated with diarrhea. Campylobacter strains isolated from clinical settings were resistant to commonly used antimicrobials. Larger studies will provide insights into the national status of Campylobacter-related AMR. Routine monitoring of antimicrobial use is recommended to mitigate this public health threat. This study compared the performance of molecular vs stool culture assays for gastrointestinal infection (GII) detection, with focus on defining cycle threshold (Ct) cut-off values for positive culture results. A total of 6,000 records of patients with suspected GII between October 2022 and February 2023 and registered at Clalit HealthCare Services in Haifa, Israel, were reviewed. Stool samples were collected from all patients with suspected GII. PCR was performed with the Seegene Allplex GI-Bacteria (I) assay kit. PCR-positive samples were cultured on bacteria-specific agar media. Out of 356 PCR-positive samples, 196 (55.1%) were culture-positive. Significant differences were noted between the mean Ct of culture-positive vs culture-negative samples for Shigella spp. ( P < 0.0001), E. coli O157 ( P = 0.0001), and Campylobacter spp. ( P = 0.004). Shigella had the lowest Ct cutoff (27.14). Negative culture results for PCR-positive samples may result from low bacterial load. At the same time, false-positive PCR results may exist. Thus, PCR result should be considered along with clinical presentation and with Ct value consideration.IMPORTANCEGII diagnostic procedures have shifted from traditional- to molecular-based assays, which may increase missdiagnosis due to the high PCR sensitivity and false positives. This study suggests to consider a Ct threshold for each pathogen in order to reduce inaccurate diagnosis. The rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Campylobacter has reinforced its status as a foodborne pathogen of significant public health concern. Resistant Campylobacter is typically transferred to humans via the consumption of contaminated animal products, particularly poultry. The genes associated with antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter spp. are poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a prevalence survey of AMR Campylobacter across 84 chicken farms in two districts of Bangladesh. Pooled cloacal swabs were collected from chickens and underwent bacteriological testing for Campylobacter spp. with PCR confirmation. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested against 14 antibiotics by disk diffusion method, and 12 resistance genes were screened in Campylobacter -positive isolates using multiplex PCR. A total of 34 (40.5%) farms were Campylobacter -positive of which 73.5% of isolates were resistant to at least 10 antibiotics. The antimicrobial susceptibility results indicate a high level of resistance against streptomycin (97.1%), clindamycin (97.1%), ampicillin (94.1%), tetracycline (94.1%), erythromycin (91.2%), ciprofloxacin (88.2%), nalidixic acid (85.3%), and imipenem (82.4%), and comparatively a low frequency of resistance to chloramphenicol (47.1%), ceftazidime (44.1%), and colistin (35.3%). Multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant Campylobacter were identified in 97.1%, and 50% of isolates, respectively. Ten resistance genes were identified including bla TEM (in 97.1% of isolates), strA - strB (85.9%), tetA (70.6%), tetB (32.4%), qnrS (23.5%), bla CTX-M-1 (20.6%), qnrB (20.6%), bla SHV (8.8%), aadB (5.9%), and qnrA (2.9%). Our findings demonstrate that resistance to ampicillin, tetracycline, and ceftazidime in Campylobacter isolates was significantly ( p  ≤ 0.05) associated with the presence of bla TEM , tetA , and bla SHV genes, respectively. The high rates of AMR in Campylobacter isolates from our study are not surprising given the liberal use of antimicrobials and incomplete biosecurity provisions on farms. Of particular concern are resistance rates to those classes of antibiotics that should be reserved for human use (azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and colistin). AMR was more prevalent in chicken farms that used multiple antibiotics, engaged in prophylactic treatment of the birds, and improperly disposed of antibiotic packages. The high prevalence of MDR in chicken-derived Campylobacter isolates from the different regions of our study reinforces the need for more prudent use of antimicrobial compounds in Bangladeshi chicken farms.

Twenty-nine hippuricase-positive Campylobacter strains were isolated from wild birds and river water. Previous characterization using atpA typing indicated that these strains were related to Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli but were most similar to three recently described hippuricase-positive Campylobacter species recovered from zebra finches, i.e. C. aviculae , C. estrildidarum and C. taeniopygiae . Phylogenetic analyses using 330 core genes placed the 29 strains into a clade well separated from the other Campylobacter taxa, indicating that these strains represent a novel Campylobacter species. Pairwise digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values were below 70 and 95 %, respectively, thus providing further supporting evidence of a novel taxon. Standard phenotypic testing was performed. All strains are microaerobic or anaerobic, motile, Gram-negative, spiral cells that are oxidase, catalase and nitrate reductase positive, but urease negative. Genomic analyses indicate that the 29 strains can potentially synthesize very few amino acids de novo and are auxotrophic for many amino acids and cofactors, similar to the species composing the Campylobacter lari group. In addition, these strains encode complete Entner-Doudoroff and Leloir pathways, suggesting that they may possess the ability to utilize both glucose and galactose; these pathways were also identified in the genomes of the zebra finch-associated taxa. The data presented here show that these strains represent a novel species within Campylobacter , for which the name Campylobacter molothri sp. nov. (type strain RM10537 T =LMG 32306 T =CCUG 75331 T ) is proposed.

This study holds significant importance due to its focus on Campylobacter , the leading bacterial cause of gastroenteritis worldwide, responsible for ∼96 million cases each year. By investigating the prevalence of both Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in humans, animals, and the environment, this research sheds light on the broader impact of these pathogens, which can harm both human and animal populations. Traditional microbiological methods were implemented followed by optimized multiplex polymerase chain reaction targeting 16S rDNA and virulence gene markers by using specific primers. The findings revealed that a total of 219 Campylobacter isolates were recovered from 528 collected specimens from human, animal, and environmental sources. Campylobacter species showed a prevalence of 41.5%, with C. jejuni accounting for 53% and C. coli for 47%. Antimicrobial resistance rates were high, with tetracycline at 89%, ceftriaxone at 75%, cefotaxime at 70%, erythromycin at 69%, nalidixic acid at 54%, ciprofloxacin at 39%, and gentamicin at 23%. Commonly prevalent virulence-associated genes observed in the Campylobacter were cad F at 93%, fla A at 91%, cdt B at 88%, che Y at 86%, sod B at 78%, and iam A at 32%. The study confirmed multidrug-resistant Campylobacter prevalence at the human-animal-environment interface, harboring virulence-associated genes with potential harm to humans. Data analysis showed a nonsignificant ( p  ≥ 0.05) correlation between virulence genes and antibiotic susceptibility. To effectively manage Campylobacter infections, a multifaceted strategy incorporating preventative interventions at different levels is required. This strategy should take into account practicability, effectiveness, and sustainability while strengthening surveillance systems and addressing the economics of disease prevention.

Introduction: Consumer demand for pasture raised, antibiotic-free poultry products has led to an increase in pastured poultry operations within the United States. Given the level of environmental interaction and the potential increase in exposure to foodborne pathogens in these settings, a greater understanding of the prevalence and diversity of Campylobacter populations inherent within pastured poultry flocks is needed., Methods: To achieve this, 40 pastured poultry flocks from nine farms were sampled using a farm-to-fork strategy, and Campylobacter was isolated and characterised from preharvest (faeces, soil) through postharvest (caeca, whole carcass rinse) to the final product the consumer would purchase (whole carcass rinse)., Results: Campylobacter was isolated from 872 of 1820 samples, showing an overall prevalence of 47.91%. The caeca showed the highest (p < 0.05) Campylobacter load (4.64 log 10 CFU/mL) and prevalence (95.5%), while the final product whole carcass rinses had the lowest (p < 0.05) Campylobacter load (0.32 log 10 CFU/mL) and prevalence (15.45%), suggesting that the Campylobacter load in the caeca may not be indicative of the Campylobacter load on the final product. Of the 872 positive samples, 337 Campylobacter isolates were selected for further characterisation. Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli comprised 74.18% (250/337) and 21.95% (74/337) of the selected isolates respectively. While the Campylobacter isolates displayed resistance to several antibiotics, the most common resistance for both C. jejuni and C. coli was against tetracycline (55.86% and 70.31% respectively). Multidrug resistance phenotypes (≥ 3 antibiotic classes) were relatively low for both C. jejuni (2.80%) and C. coli (9.45%)., Conclusions: Campylobacter load, prevalence and diversity were more affected by farm location than by the type of sample from which the Campylobacter was isolated. Campylobacteriosis is one of the most commonly reported foodborne diseases and is of particular importance in low-income countries. More data is needed to better understand the epidemiology of Campylobacter spp. in food sold at informal markets, where most people in low-income countries buy their food. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of Campylobacter spp. among broiler chicken carcasses sold at informal urban markets in Uganda and to gain more knowledge about hygienic handling practices and awareness of foodborne bacterial diseases among the market vendors. In total, 120 broiler chicken carcasses from 30 different markets were analysed using ISO 10272 and confirmed by PCR. AMR analyses were performed using the disc diffusion test. Epidemiological data on food safety practices and awareness was collected from the vendors using a questionnaire. Campylobacter spp. was isolated from 66% (79/120) of the carcasses; 32% were C. jejuni, 14% were C. coli and 54% comprised of a mixture of both species. All C. jejuni isolates showed resistance to tetracycline, 88% to ciprofloxacin and 28% to erythromycin. Of the C. coli isolates, 82% showed resistance to tetracycline, 73% to erythromycin and the quinolones ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid. More than half of the vendors had heard about food-borne illnesses, but none knew about Campylobacter spp., and the knowledge regarding hygienic practices was low. Raw milk is considered a high-risk source of Campylobacter due to faecal contamination from healthy cattle and farm environments, thus linking raw milk consumption to global outbreaks. Detection of Campylobacter in raw milk poses challenges due to low contamination levels and antibacterial properties of the milk. Culture-based protocols for Campylobacter detection in milk vary, mainly with regard to pH adjustment and the choice of enrichment broth. This European collaborative study was organised by the EU Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Campylobacter together with eight EU National Reference Laboratories (NRL) for Campylobacter with the purpose to evaluate methods for culture-based detection of Campylobacter in raw cow's milk. The study was divided into two parts, an interlaboratory part and an intralaboratory part, both organised around the same two protocols. The aim of protocol 1 was to evaluate the impact of pH adjustment and storage of the milk on the culturability of Campylobacter over time. Aliquots of the spiked milk were adjusted either to pH 7.0 or pH 7.6 or left unadjusted. The milk was stored up to 48 h at refrigerated temperature and Campylobacter was quantified according to ISO 10272-2 on day 0, 1 and 2. The aim of protocol 2 was to evaluate which enrichment broth, Bolton broth (BB) or Preston broth (PB), showed highest sensitivity in detection of Campylobacter. The spiked milk was enriched in BB and PB as described in ISO 10272-1:2017 or ISO 10272-1:2017/Amd1.2023. In the interlaboratory part, each milk batch was collected locally by each participating NRL/EURL and inoculated with the same Campylobacter strain. In the follow-up intralaboratory part, the EURL-Campylobacter repeated the tests in protocol 1 and 2 but used different Campylobacter strains and strains subjected to thermal stress prior to inoculation. The results show that pH adjustment of raw milk has a negligible impact on culture-based detection of Campylobacter, regardless of strain and level of environmental stress. The composition of milk and properties of the inoculated strain influence culture-based detection of Campylobacter over storage time, and strains subjected to additional stress prior to inoculation in milk are reduced in culturability much faster than the same strains prepared under normal conditions. Whole-Genome Sequencing has the potential to be an effective method for surveillance of foodborne diseases. This study aims to determine the genetic relatedness and prevalence of virulence-associated genes and antimicrobial resistance determinants in 135 Campylobacter jejuni, seven Campylobacter coli and three Campylobacter lari isolates from the poultry supply chain and a hospital in Spain. The isolates showed a wide genetic diversity between and within species with Clonal Complex 21 the most frequent lineage found. Among species, C. jejuni showed the highest prevalence of virulence genes (287/333) in which a high occurring variability was observed in the capsule biosynthesis and transport, O-linked flagellar glycosylation and lipooligosaccharide biosynthesis loci, with a great impact of phase-variation that led to 72 different virulence gene patterns among all isolates. High prevalence (> 90 %) of bla OXA -type β-lactamase genes and mutations in DNA gyrase gene associated with fluoroquinolones resistance were observed, and at a frequency similar to the tet(O) gene in C. jejuni (93 %) and C. coli (86 %), both of which also harboured resistance determinants to aminoglycosides with a higher occurrence rate in C. coli (43 %), that was the only species in which mutations in the 23S ribosomal subunit conferring resistance to erythromycin were identified (43 %). Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. are the leading cause of human enteric infections in the European Union. Some gull species act as reservoirs and play an important role in the epidemiology of these zoonotic agents. To gain insight into Campylobacter and Salmonella epidemiology we studied colonies of Audouin's gull (Larus audouinii) and yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) in Barcelona metropolitan area, Catalonia (north-eastern Spain). We assessed the occurrence, genetic diversity, virulence potential, and antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter and Salmonella isolates recovered from gull faeces in different time periods within 2009-2018. The occurrence of Campylobacter was higher compared to Salmonella in both gull species. Also, the occurrence of both pathogens was significantly higher in Audouin's gull (45 % for Campylobacter, 20 % for Salmonella), than in yellow-legged gull (13 % and 7 %, respectively). All but one individual carried C. jejuni; the remaining positive yellow-legged gull carried C. lari. Salmonella serovar Typhimurium (including its monophasic variant) was the most frequent in both hosts followed by ser. Bredeney. Other serovars frequently associated with human salmonellosis (Infantis, London, Virchow) were only isolated from yellow-legged gulls. Multilocus Sequence Typing analyses showed that yellow-legged gull and not Audouin's gull carried several Campylobacter genotypes associated with human enteritis. Campylobacter isolates from both gull species revealed a high virulence potential, as opposed to Salmonella isolates which showed a lower prevalence of virulence-associated genes, particularly in Audouin's gull. Overall, a moderate to high frequency of antimicrobial resistance (including multidrug resistance) was found in both pathogens from both gull species. Campylobacter and Salmonella from yellow-legged gull showed a higher frequency of isolates resistant to antimicrobials of relevance in human medicine. Background: Campylobacter is associated with environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) and malnutrition in children. Campylobacter infection could be a linchpin between livestock fecal exposure and health outcomes in low-resource smallholder settings., Methods: We followed a birth cohort of 106 infants in rural smallholder households in eastern Ethiopia up to 13 months of age. We measured anthropometry, surveyed sociodemographic determinants, and collected stool and urine samples. A short survey was conducted during monthly visits, infant stool samples were collected, and Campylobacter spp. was quantified using genus-specific qPCR. In month 13, we collected stool and urine samples to assay for EED biomarkers. We employed regression analyses to assess the associations of household determinants with Campylobacter colonization, EED, and growth faltering., Results: The Campylobacter load in infant stools increased with age. The mean length-for-age Z -score (LAZ) decreased from -0.45 at 3-4 months of age to -2.06 at 13 months, while the prevalence of stunting increased from 3 to 51%. The prevalence of EED at 13 months of age was 56%. A higher Campylobacter load was associated with more frequent diarrhea. Prelacteal feeding significantly increased Campylobacter load in the first month of life. Over the whole follow-up period, Campylobacter load was increased by keeping chickens unconfined at home and unsanitary disposal of infant stools while decreased by mothers' handwashing with soap. Longitudinally, Campylobacter load was positively associated with food insecurity, introduction of complementary foods, and raw milk consumption. There were no significant associations between Campylobacter load, EED, and LAZ., Conclusion: This study found that most determinants associated with increased Campylobacter infection were related to suboptimal feeding practices and hygiene. The findings related to livestock-associated risks were inconclusive. Although stunting, EED, and Campylobacter prevalence rates all increased to high levels by the end of the first year of life, no significant association between them was identified. Introduction: Enteric pathogens are a leading causes of diarrheal deaths in low-and middle-income countries. The Exposure Assessment of Campylobacter Infections in Rural Ethiopia (EXCAM) project, aims to identify potential sources of bacteria in the genus Campylobacter and, more generally, fecal contamination of infants during the first 1.5 years of life using Escherichia coli as indicator., Methods: A total of 1,310 samples (i.e., hand rinses from the infant, sibling and mother, drinking and bathing water, food and fomite provided to or touched by the infants, areola swabs, breast milk and soil) were collected from 76 households between May 2021 and June 2022. Samples were assigned to two groups by infant age: TP1 (time point 1), infants between 4 and 8 months of age, and TP2, infants between 11 and 15 months of age. Fluorometric and semi-selective colorimetric approaches were used to quantify E. coli in the field samples., Results: Overall, E. coli was ubiquitous within selected households (56.8% across the study). E. coli was more frequently detected than average (>53%) with high concentration (>2-log CFU) in soil (g) and per pair of hand, while the opposite trend (<33%; <1.5-log CFU) was observed in food provided to the infants (g or mL), per areola, and breast milk (mL; p  < 0.01). E. coli was frequently detected in fomites touched by the infants, drinking and bathing water (>51%), but at low concentration (<1.5-log CFU). Akut gastroenterit dünya genelinde en yaygın enfeksiyon hastalıklarından biridir. Bu hastalıklar gelişmekte olan ülkelerde çocuk ölümlerine ve ciddi ekonomik kayıplara neden olmuştur. Hastalık genellikle yaygın diyare şeklinde kendini gösterse de bazı olgularda şiddetli enfeksiyon belirtilerine, hatta ölümlere neden olmuştur. Bu çalışmada, gastroenterit şikayetiyle hastaneye başvurmuş hastalardan alınan gaita örneklerinden izole edilen Campylobacter türlerinin tanımlanması, virülans genlerinin polimeraz zincir reaksiyonu [polymerase chain reaction (PCR)] ile araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Campylobacter sıklığının tespiti için gastroenterit şüphesi olan 850 hasta örneği çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Campylobacter izolasyonu için dışkı örnekleri modifiye charcoal sefoperazon deoksikolat agar besiyerine ekilip 42 °C'de 48-72 saat mikroaerofilik şartlarda inkübasyona bırakılmıştır. Campylobacter şüpheli kolonilere katalaz, oksidaz ve Gram boyama yapılmıştır. Dışkıların makroskobik incelemesinde dışkının kıvamı, mukus durumu ve lökosit varlığı araştırılmıştır. DNA izolasyonu taze üreyen kolonilerden ticari QIAampDNA mini kit (Qiagen, Almanya) protokolüne göre yapılmıştır. Bakterilerin tanımlanması ve virülans genlerinin varlığı PCR ile araştırılmıştır. Campylobacter cinsi izolatların moleküler olarak tanımlanmasında 16S rRNA genine spesifik 816 baz çifti (bp) uzunluğundaki C412F ve C1228R primer çifti kullanılmıştır. Campylobacter jejuni'nin hippurase genine spesifik olan 735 bp uzunluğundaki HipO1 ve HipO2 primer çifti kullanılmıştır. Campylobacter coli'nin ise asperkinase genine özel 500 bp uzunluğundaki CC1 ve CC2 primerleri kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada incelenen 850 örneğin 122'sinde Campylobacter spp. üremesi tespit edilmiştir. Pozitif örneklerin 107 (%87.7)'si poliklinik hastalarından, 15 (%12.3)'i ise serviste yatan hastalardan izole edilmiştir. Hastaların yaş grubuna göre dağılımı incelendiğinde en yüksek oranda pozitiflik %39.4 (48) ile 0-5 yaş arasındaki çocuklarda saptanmıştır. PCR ile bu izolatların 106'sı C.jejuni, 11'i C.coli ve beşi Campylobacter spp. olarak tanımlanmıştır. Campylobacter izolatlarının 102 (%83.6)'sinde ciaB geni, 93 (%76.2)'ünde dnaJ geni, 106 (%86.8)'sında cdtC geni ve 115 (94.2%)'inde cdtA geni tespit edilmiştir. cdtB, pldA ve cadF genleri sırasıyla 110 (%90.1), 85 (%69.6) ve 110 (%90.1) izolatta pozitif olarak tespit edilmiştir. Virülans genlerinin türlere göre dağılımına bakıldığında; cadF geninin C.coli izolatlarının hepsinde bulunduğu, cdtA ve ciaB genlerinin diğer Campylobacter spp. izolatlarının tamamında saptandığı tespit edilmiştir. C.jejuni izolatlarının 68'inde, C.coli izolatlarının üçünde, Campylobacter spp. izolatlarının birinde tüm genler pozitif saptanmıştır. Çalışmadaki veriler Campylobacter'in akut gastroenterit hastalıklarında yüksek oranda saptandığını göstermiştir. Bu çalışmanın, klinisyenlerin Campylobacter enfeksiyonlarına olan yaklaşımında yardımcı olacağı düşünülmektedir.

To prevent foodborne illness, adequate cleaning and disinfection (C&D) is essential to remove pathogenic bacteria from the slaughter environment. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of Campylobacter spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL E. coli) before and after C&D in slaughterhouses. Samples from food- and non-food contact surfaces taken before and after C&D in one red meat and one poultry slaughterhouse were analyzed for the target bacteria. Whole-genome sequencing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were performed. In total, 484 samples were analyzed. Campylobacter spp. were isolated from 13.0% to 15.5% of samples before C&D in the red meat and poultry slaughterhouse, respectively. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated before C&D in 12.5% and 5.2% of samples in the red meat and poultry slaughterhouse, respectively. It was noted that C. jejuni was detected on multiple surfaces and that L. monocytogenes showed potential persistence in one slaughterhouse. After C&D, L. monocytogenes was found in one sample. ESBL E. coli was not detected either before or after C&D. Campylobacter is a major cause of foodborne gastroenteritis worldwide, with the mishandling of contaminated chicken meat among the main pathways for human infection. Granted the disease burden due to this pathogen, systematic assessments of its potential impact are necessary. The aims of this study were to evaluate both presence and load of Campylobacter in chicken meat sold in traditional markets, assess risk factors related with the infrastructure and hygienic conditions of market stalls, and evaluate control strategies for campylobacteriosis in Peru through a quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA), a data-driven, systematic approach to quantitatively assess risks by integrating empirical contamination levels, microbial behavior, and consumer exposure. Between February and December 2022, a total of 90 chicken meat samples from traditional markets were sampled and evaluated by both culture and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Campylobacter spp. were detected in 28 % and 76 % of samples with a mean quantification of 3.3 log 10 CFU/g and 4.9 log 10 GC/g through culture and qPCR, respectively. Market stalls with tap water showed higher prevalence and loads, while those without refrigeration had higher quantifications. The QMRA analysis, using the most conservative parameters and bacterial load, indicated that the entire modeled population develops campylobacteriosis at least once annually. These results highlight the public health impact of Campylobacter, potentially linked to the alarming number of Guillain-Barré syndrome cases observed in Peru. Campylobacter spp. is a major source of global gastrointestinal infections. Their enteric infections are linked to the consumption of undercooked poultry products, contaminated milk and water, and the handling of wild animals and birds. The detection of Campylobacter spp. in water and food samples mainly depends on culture-based techniques. Public Health England (PHE), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the International Standard Organization (ISO) have standardized Campylobacter spp. isolation and enumeration procedures for food and water samples, which involve the usage of selective agar media and enrichment broth. Different types of selective plating and enrichment media have been prepared for Campylobacter spp. detection and assessment during regular food surveillance and food poisoning. To date, culture media remains the standard option for microbiological food analysis and has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and World Health Organization (WHO). This review discusses the standard microbiological protocols for Campylobacter spp. isolation and enumeration in food and water and evaluates detection media (pre-enrichment, selective enrichment, and selective plating) for their rational applications. Moreover, it also elaborates on the advantages and disadvantages of recent chromogenic culture media in Campylobacter spp.-oriented food surveillance. Background: Gastric diseases caused, in particular, by Campylobacter , non-typhoidal Salmonella , and Shigella resulting from food and/or water problems, are a disproportionately distributed burden in developing countries in Central Africa. The aim of this work was to compile a list of studies establishing the prevalence of the involvement of these bacterial genera in diarrheal syndromes in Central Africa from 1998 to 2022., Methods: The Preferred Reporting Articles for Systemic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, six (6) database (Pubmed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, Freefullpdf, and Scinapse) were perused for research on the role of Campylobacter , Salmonella and Shigella diarrheal infections in humans and animals, in 9 country of Central Africa over from 1998 to 2022., Results: Seventeen articles were selected, including 16 on humans and one on animals. These data were recorded in 6 of the 9 countries of Central Africa, including Gabon (5), Angola (3), Cameroon (3), the Democratic Republic of Congo (3), Chad (2), and the Central African Republic (1). Mono-infections with Salmonella spp. were the most predominant (55.56%, n = 5/9), followed by an equal proportion of Campylobacter spp. and Shigella spp. with 44.44% (4/9), respectively and, co-infections with Campylobacter/Salmonella spp. and Salmonella/Shigella spp. with a prevalence of 11.11% (1/9) respectively. The most used diagnostic tool was conventional culture (82.35%) against 17.65% for PCR or real-time PCR., Conclusion: Despite the paucity of recorded data on the prevalence of diarrheal infections due to Campylobacter in this sub-region, it is crucial that scientific studies focus on the diagnosis and monitoring of this zoonotic bacterium. Also, improved diagnosis will necessarily involve the integration of molecular tools in the diagnosis of these diarrheic syndromes in both humans and animals.

The contamination of Campylobacter in shellfish poses a health risk for its pathogenicity associated with campylobacteriosis. However, an efficient method to detect this risk is unavailable. Herein, we introduce a portable colorimetric biosensing platform that comprises three modules: an enrichment module 1, a binding and transduction module 2, and a smartphone-based module 3. Module 1 is an aptamer-modified 96-well plate for the specific capture of Campylobacter in a simple and high-throughput manner. Module 2 features a bifunctional biopolymer of L-glutamic acid γ-hydroxamate-alginate-Fe 3+ coordinating fusarinine C, which can bind the captured Campylobacter cells and transduce them into amplified color signals upon reaction with Fe 3+ -violurate complexes. Module 1 achieves a capture efficiency of 97.24 %, and the subsequent addition of module 2 renders colorimetric indication of Campylobacter ranging from 10 1 to 10 6 CFU/mL, achieving an actual limit of detection of 8 CFU/mL validated by Campylobacter single-cells. Moreover, the generated colors can be recognized and converted into cell densities by module 3 with ultrasensitivity. Notably, this biosensor-smartphone platform accomplishe reliable high-throughput colorimetric detection of Campylobacter in real samples with an accuracy of 80 %. The Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system plays a crucial role in ensuring food safety within food service establishments, effectively reducing the risk of foodborne diseases. This study focused on assessing the risk of microbe contamination in poultry-based cook-served food during meal preparation in four restaurants and five selected HACCP-certified hotels in eastern China. We examined samples collected from 26 poultry-based cooked dishes, 248 food contact surfaces, 252 non-food contact surfaces, and 121 hand swabs. Our findings indicated a favorable trend of compliance with Chinese national standards, as Escherichia coli and Campylobacter were not detected in any cooked food samples. However, the microbiological assessments revealed non-compliance with total plate count standards in 7 % of the cooked samples from restaurants. In contrast, both dine-in hotels and restaurants exhibited significant non-compliance with guidance concerning food and non-food contact surfaces. Furthermore, our study found that chefs' hand hygiene did not meet microbiological reference standards, even after washing. Notably, Campylobacter persisted at 27 % and 30 % on chefs' hands, posing a significant risk of cross-contamination and foodborne diseases. These findings emphasize the urgent necessity for enhanced supervision of hygiene procedures and process monitoring in the HACCP-certified establishments engaged in the preparation and serving of food. Background: Swift identification and diagnosis of gastrointestinal infections are crucial for prompt treatment, prevention of complications, and reduction of the risk of hospital transmission. The radiological appearance on computed tomography could potentially provide important clues to the etiology of gastrointestinal infections. We aimed to describe features based on computed tomography of patients diagnosed with Campylobacter, Salmonella or Shigella infections in South Sweden., Methods: This was a retrospective observational population-based cohort study conducted between 2019 and 2022 in Skåne, southern Sweden, a region populated by 1.4 million people. Using data from the Department of Clinical Microbiology combined with data from the Department of Radiology, we identified all patients who underwent computed tomography of the abdomen CTA two days before and up to seven days after sampling due to the suspicion of Campylobacter, Salmonella or Shigella during the study period., Results: A total of 215 CTAs scans performed on 213 patients during the study period were included in the study. The median age of included patients was 45 years (range 11-86 years), and 54% (114/213) of the patients were women. Of the 215 CTAs, 80% ( n  = 172) had been performed due to Campylobacter and 20% ( n  = 43) due to Salmonella enteritis. CTA was not performed for any individual diagnosed with Shigella during the study period. There were no statistically significant differences in the radiological presentation of Campylobacter and Salmonella infections., Conclusion: The most common location of Campylobacter and Salmonella infections was the cecum, followed by the ascending colon. Enteric wall edema, contrast loading of the affected mucosa, and enteric fat stranding are typical features of both infections. The CTA characteristics of Campylobacter and Salmonella are similar, and cannot be used to reliably differentiate between different infectious etiologies.

Campylobacter is a globally important pathogen with well-studied risk factors, but the burden of risk factors has not been quantified. We quantified the cost of illness attributable to specific domestic risk factors for C. jejuni and C. coli in Australia. We used data from a 2018-2019 case-control study to estimate odds ratios and attributable fractions for risk factors. We used data on national incidence, hospitalization, and premature mortality to quantify burden. We then applied costs related to healthcare utilization, pain and suffering, premature mortality, and lost productivity to each risk factor. In Australia, C. jejuni caused 83.0% of campylobacteriosis infections and chicken consumption resulted in the highest attributable fraction (30.0%), costing approximately US$110 million annually. The excess burden of campylobacteriosis associated with the use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) was US$45 million, with almost half these costs due to disease in adults over 65 years of age. Contact with young dogs (US$30 million) and chicken feces (US$10 million) also contributed to costs and burden. Campylobacteriosis is a significant cost to Australia, particularly because of lost productivity. Effective cross-sectoral interventions to improve chicken meat safety and reduce inappropriate use of PPIs might have substantial economic and human benefits.

Objectives: Campylobacter spp. has been reported to be a sexually transmissible enteric infection in men who have sex with men (MSM) since the 1980s causing an acute severe diarrhoeal illness and rarely an acute demyelinating polyneuropathy (Guillain-Barré syndrome). The aim of this review was to explore the factors seen in MSM with Campylobacter spp., Methods: We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines by searching 7 bibliographical databases in August 2024 for manuscripts in English. Initial screening was conducted by a primary author and then two authors conducted independent full-text reviews to determine the final eligible manuscripts. We only included manuscripts which explored factors seen in MSM with Campylobacter spp.. Two authors independently used the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools to assess risk for bias. This review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023464803)., Results: 25 manuscripts met the inclusion criteria that included 265 MSM with Campylobacter spp.. This review has highlighted demographic factors (living with HIV, living in urban MSM districts, HIV negative MSM using HIV-PrEP), biological factors (antimicrobial resistant Campylobacter spp., having a concurrent or previous sexually transmitted infection [ Neisseria gonorrhoeae , Chlamydia trachomatis, Herpes simplex virus, Hepatitis C, Mpox] current/previous enteric infection including non-pathogenic parasites [ Shigella spp. , Giardia duodenalis , Cryptosporidium , Entamoeba histolytica, Salmonella spp. , Entamoeba hartmanii, Entamoeba coli, Endolimax nana, Iodamoeba butchlii ]) and behavioural factors (condomless receptive anal sex, oral-anal sex, oral genital sex, multiple/new sexual partners, using sex on premises venues and the internet to meet sexual partners) seen in MSM with Campylobacte r spp., Conclusion: This review has highlighted some important demographic, biological and behavioural risk factors seen in MSM with Campylobacter spp.. Aims: Most human infections with non-typhoid Salmonella (NTS) or Campylobacter are zoonotic in nature and acquired though consumption of contaminated food of mainly animal origin. However, individuals may also acquire salmonellosis or campylobacteriosis through non-foodborne transmission pathways, such as those mediated by the environment. This emphasizes the need to consider both direct and indirect exposure to livestock sources as a possible transmission route for NTS and Campylobacter. Therefore, this study aimed at assessing whether salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis incidence is spatially associated with exposure to livestock (i.e. small ruminants, dairy cows, veal calves, laying hens, broiler chickens and pigs) in the Netherlands for the years 2007-2019 and 2014-2019 respectively., Methods and Results: Risk factors (population-weighted number of animals) and their population attributable fractions were determined using a Poisson regression model with a log-link function fitted using integrated nested Laplace approximation. The analyses were performed for different hexagonal sizes (90, 50, 25 and 10 km 2 ) and accounted for geographical coverage of the diagnostic laboratory catchment areas. Moreover, serological data were used to look into the possible effects of acquired immunity due to repeated exposure to the pathogen through the environment that would potentially hinder the analyses based on the incidence of reported cases. A linear mixed-effects model was then fitted where the postal code areas were included as a random effect. Livestock was not consistently significantly associated with acquiring salmonellosis or campylobacteriosis in the Netherlands., Conclusions: Results showed that living in livestock-rich areas in the Netherlands is not a consistently significant, spatially restricted risk factor for acquiring salmonellosis or campylobacteriosis, thereby supporting current knowledge that human infections with Salmonella and Campylobacter are mainly foodborne., (© 2024 The Author(s). Fecal contamination of surface water compromises the usability of surface water for drinking water production due to an increase in human health risks. In this study, we collected surface water samples for two years from the Kokemäki River (Finland). The downstream river stretch is used for feeding production of artificial ground water for a major drinking water treatment plant. The prevalence of Campylobacter species and Salmonella serotypes together with fecal source identifiers targeting general, human, gull, swine, and ruminant were evaluated at 16 sampling sites throughout the studied watershed. We detected Campylobacter spp. from all 16 sampling sites with Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter lari as the most detected species. Salmonella spp. was detected in 10 out of 16 sampling sites, with Salmonella Typhimurium being the most common serovar. Regarding spatial variation in the hygienic quality of surface water, the upstream area (urban proximity) and downstream area (agricultural proximity) had higher microbial loads than the middle section of the study area. Samples taken in fall and spring had higher microbial loads than summer and winter samples. The lower ratio of rRNA to rRNA-gene (rDNA) of studied microbes in the winter than in other seasons may indicate low metabolic activity of bacterial targets during winter. The number of gulls, swine, and cattle in the catchment area concorded with the number of fecal source identifiers in the surface water. Further, the prevalence of gull-specific source identifier agreed with the detection of C. coli, C. lari, and S. Typhimurim, whereas the prevalence of swine- and ruminant-specific source identifiers agreed with the detection of C. jejuni and C. coli. Thus, fecal source identifiers are shown to be important tools for monitoring zoonotic pathogens affecting microbial quality of surface water. This study investigated the diversity of thermophilic Campylobacter species isolated from three New Zealand freshwater catchments affected by pastoral and urban activities. Utilising matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight and whole genome sequence analysis, the study identified Campylobacter jejuni (n = 46, 46.0%), C. coli (n = 39, 39%), C. lari (n = 4, 4.0%), and two novel Campylobacter species lineages (n = 11, 11%). Core genome sequence analysis provided evidence of prolonged persistence or continuous faecal shedding of closely related strains. The C. jejuni isolates displayed distinct sequence types (STs) associated with human, ruminant, and environmental sources, whereas the C. coli STs included waterborne ST3302 and ST7774. Recombination events affecting loci implicated in human pathogenesis and environmental persistence were observed, particularly in the cdtABC operon (encoding the cytolethal distending toxin) of non-human C. jejuni STs. A low diversity of antimicrobial resistance genes (aadE-Cc in C. coli), with genotype/phenotype concordance for tetracycline resistance (tetO) in three ST177 isolates, was noted. The data suggest the existence of two types of naturalised waterborne Campylobacter: environmentally persistent strains originating from waterbirds and new environmental species not linked to human campylobacteriosis. This study investigated the impact of irrigation sources (pond, stream, and well) in high tunnel-dripline systems on the dissemination and persistence of foodborne pathogens (Escherichia coli O157, Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and the 'big six' Shiga toxin-producing E. coli [STEC]) in small specialty crop farms (SSCFs). Ten SSCF-growing fresh tomatoes using high tunnel-dripline systems were sampled between January and November 2022. Selective enrichment combined with PCR was used to detect the selected foodborne pathogens in the irrigation water (n = 240), soil (n = 240), and tomato fruits (n = 120). Overall, surface-originated water sources (streams and ponds) having potential contact with farm animals or wildlife harbored higher pathogen burden (cumulative prevalence of all the pathogens) compared to subsurface water source (well and underground spring water). STEC O26, O45, and O103 were detected at high frequency (up to 88% per SSCF per time point) in the water source and associated dripline irrigation system of 4/6 SSCFs using stream and pond water. Other foodborne pathogens (especially, L. monocytogenes) were detected in 6/10 SSCFs, but at low frequency (<25% per SSCF per time point). The prevalence of foodborne pathogens in the 10 SSCFs over time was positively correlated with the length of high tunnel and planting date (r 2  = 0.93 and 0.79, respectively; P < 0.006). Our study highlighted that dripline irrigation systems may allow the long-distance transport of foodborne pathogens from the contaminated water source to the field. This study, conducted in Northern Israel, aimed to compare positivity rate and demographic characteristics of patients with Aeromonas-associated gastroenteritis (AAG) to asymptomatic, and examine the role of Aeromonas in AAG by comparing clinical and epidemiological characteristics between AAG and Campylobacter-associated gastroenteritis (CAG) patients. Results showed that 4.24%-4.81% of AAG patients had Aeromonas spp. in stools as a sole pathogen in 2020-2022, compared to 4.9% of asymptomatic. Analysis of 243 CAG patients versus 70 AAG patients revealed significantly less diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and muscle pain in AAG patients. Multivariate analysis identified higher Ct values, recent restaurant dining, and prolonged diarrhea as predictive factors for AAG versus CAG. Estimates for the cost-effectiveness of food safety interventions are needed to direct food safety management decisions. In this study, we estimated the cost-effectiveness of food safety interventions to control Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. along the chicken meat supply chain in Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. Using Monte-Carlo simulation models, we estimated the cost-effectiveness ratio (CER) of these interventions from the annual costs of an intervention (in United States Dollar, ($)) divided by their respective public health benefits (avoided disability-adjusted life years (DALY)) for each pathogen separately and for the two pathogens combined. The lower the CER of an intervention the better. In Burkina Faso, out of 16 candidate interventions, the three interventions with the lowest CER were improved handwashing in chicken restaurants (Campylobacter spp. 387 $/avoided DALY (95 % Prediction interval: 69-1468); Salmonella spp. 7801 (1067-33,492)), using designated kitchen utensils at restaurants (549 (107-2026); 4515 (671-18,957)), and avoiding cross contamination between live birds at market (768 (187-2620); 5127 (933-20,423)). In Ethiopia, out of 15, the interventions that came first were improved transport conditions of live birds (296 (79-996); 534 (150-1770)), adding plant extracts to feed or water at farms (387 (69-1532); 581 (108-2256)), and adding organic acids to feed or water at farms (454 (69-1947); 1226 (195-5178)). When all costs were attributed to chicken meat, the household interventions in Ethiopia had substantially higher CER than interventions in other supply chain stages, because of the low number of chickens prepared and consumed at home in a year. When only part of the costs was attributed, the CER of these household interventions were reduced by over 90 % ranking them as the most cost-effective interventions in the supply chain. When considering public health benefits of both Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. in Burkina Faso, the CERs were 11 to 64 % lower compared to the CER when only considering Campylobacter spp. and 59 to 96 % lower if only looking at Salmonella spp., depending on the intervention. In Ethiopia, this was 25 to 80 % for Campylobacter spp. and 36 to 87 % for Salmonella spp., respectively. Thus, attribution of intervention costs to the food product of interest and inclusion of multiple pathogens can have a substantial impact on the estimated cost-effectiveness of control measures. Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli represent the leading causes of bacterial gastroenteritis in humans, and infections can produce post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS). Rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta ) (RM) are similarly susceptible to acute campylobacteriosis and represent a potential model of PI-IBS. We characterized the Campylobacter species circulating in an RM breeding colony using culture, qPCR, and whole genome sequencing (WGS). We also compared the C. jejuni and C. coli prevalence in RM as detected with qPCR versus culture and identified risk factors for bacteria presence and intestinal disease. Culture of 275 samples yielded C. coli (103) and C. jejuni (8), of which 21.6% were resistant to quinolones and 3.6% were resistant to macrolides. Multidrug-resistant isolates were obtained exclusively from animals exhibiting diarrhea or with histologically confirmed chronic enterocolitis. WGS revealed a non-clonal population of Campylobacter spp. Genotypic predictions of resistance were excellent except for aminoglycosides. All sequenced isolates contained genes for all subunits of cytolethal distending toxin. qPCR detected a prevalence of 45.9% for C. coli and 29.6% for C. jejuni . The quantity of either bacteria was significantly higher ( P < 0.05) in animals with intestinal disease compared to healthy animals, though only young age was significantly associated with the presence of Campylobacter sp. or intestinal disease. Significantly more C. jejuni positive animals were detected with qPCR than with culture. These results provide a comprehensive characterization of Campylobacter spp. circulating in a breeding colony of RM in the United States and suggest that qPCR is superior for the detection of C. jejuni in RM., Importance: Gastrointestinal disease is one of the most common reasons for hospitalization in non-human primate colonies and accounts for over one-third of non-research related euthanasia. In rhesus macaques, this manifests as both acute diarrhea and chronic enterocolitis (CE), a syndrome of chronic diarrhea resulting in poor weight gain or weight loss which is minimally responsive to treatment. Campylobacter spp. are major causes of acute enterocolitis in rhesus macaques and may predispose individuals to the development of CE, similar to post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome in humans. Despite these concerns, there are few studies characterizing Campylobacter in rhesus macaque colonies, in particular utilizing whole genome sequencing and assessing findings with respect to the health status of the host. Objective: The reservoir of sexually transmissible bacterial enteric pathogens in asymptomatic men who have sex with men (MSM) may impact future outbreaks, and the evolution of antimicrobial resistance. We aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence and explore any factors associated with Shigella spp, Campylobacter spp, diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp in asymptomatic MSM using the random effects model., Methods: We searched Embase, MEDLINE, CINAHL and Web of Science Core Collections for manuscripts published up to February 2024. One author screened citations and abstracts; two authors independently conducted a full-text review. We included manuscripts which measured the prevalence of Shigella spp, Campylobacter spp, diarrhoeagenic E. coli and Salmonella spp in asymptomatic MSM. Quality and risk of bias was assessed independently by two authors using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. We calculated pooled prevalence and CIs using the random effects model., Results: Six manuscripts were included in the final review. The manuscripts were from Australia (n=2), the UK (n=2), the Netherlands (n=1) and the USA (n=1) and included data from 3766 asymptomatic MSM tested for bacterial enteric pathogens. The prevalence of Shigella spp was 1.1% (95% CI 0.7% to 1.7%), Campylobacter spp 1.9% (95% CI 1.5% to 2.5%), diarrhoeagenic E. coli 3.8% (95% CI 2.1% to 6.7%) and Salmonella spp 0.3% (95% CI 0.1% to 0.6%). The present study describes the first isolation of a recently described Campylobacter species, Campylobacter vicugnae , in humans. The isolates were recovered by two independent French laboratories in 2020 and 2022 from a man and a woman suffering from gastroenteritis. Biochemical and growth characteristics, and electron microscopy for these two strains indicated that they belong to Campylobacter genus. 16S rDNA and GyrA-based phylogeny, as well as average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA-DNA Hybridization analyses revealed that both strains belong to the Campylobacter vicugnae species. Both isolates possess a complete cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) locus with cdtA , cdtB, and cdt C, and features of CDT activity were demonstrated in vitro with Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cells. Our data suggest that these two isolates of C. vicugnae were associated with gastroenteritis in humans and induced major cytopathogenic effects in vitro . C. vicugnae is likely to be a novel human pathogen, with a source of foodborne infection that needs to be determined.IMPORTANCE Campylobacter species that display toxicity features are a worldwide public health issue. In clinical contexts, it is crucial to identify which isolate could be an urgent threat to a patient. Actual and widely used laboratory methods such as mass spectrometry or PCR may be flawed in the field of species identification. In contrast, the present study shows that next-generation sequencing allows to precisely identify isolates to species level that may have been omitted otherwise. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of potentially diarrhoeagenic microbes (PDMs) in faecal samples from asymptomatic individuals in a high-income country, identify risk factors for carriage and to identify microbial factors that differ between PDMs in asymptomatic versus symptomatic individuals. Samples from 1000 asymptomatic participants were collected, together with a questionnaire, between 2015 and 2020 and examined by PCR for 11 PDMs. Isolates were characterised and potential risk factors were registered. Atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (aEPEC), Yersinia enterocolitica, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) and Campylobacter spp. were found in 163 (16%), 20 (2.0%), 17 (1.7%), 12 (1.2%) and 11 (1.1%) asymptomatic individuals, respectively. Other PDMs were rare. Only low virulent STEC, with stx1c, stx2b or stx2f, was detected. Travels outside Europe was a significant risk factor for detecting Campylobacter spp. (odds ratio (OR) 6.99; 95% CI 1.12-43.6) and ETEC (OR 11.4; 95% CI 1.26-102). Individuals ≥65 years of age had lower odds of carrying STEC (OR 0.11; 95% CI 0.02-0.57) or EPEC (OR 0.09; 95% CI 0.05-0.16) than individuals ≤5 years of age. Objectives: Integrating pathogen genomic surveillance with bioinformatics can enhance public health responses by identifying risk and guiding interventions. This study focusses on the two predominant Campylobacter species, which are commonly found in the gut of birds and mammals and often infect humans via contaminated food. Rising incidence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are a global concern, and there is an urgent need to quantify the main routes to human infection., Methods: During routine US national surveillance (2009-2019), 8856 Campylobacter genomes from human infections and 16,703 from possible sources were sequenced. Using machine learning and probabilistic models, we target genetic variation associated with host adaptation to attribute the source of human infections and estimate the importance of different disease reservoirs., Results: Poultry was identified as the primary source of human infections, responsible for an estimated 68% of cases, followed by cattle (28%), and only a small contribution from wild birds (3%) and pork sources (1%). Six urease-negative Campylobacter strains were isolated from cattle faeces over a 19-month period from 2009 to 2010. These strains were initially identified as Campylobacter sputorum by 16S rRNA gene and atpA typing. Initial studies characterizing these strains by multilocus sequence typing and genome sequencing further supported their classification as C. sputorum but indicated that these strains form a divergent clade within the species. A polyphasic study was undertaken here to clarify their taxonomic position. Phylogenetic analyses were performed based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and the concatenated sequences of 330 core genes, with the latter analysis also placing the six strains into a clade distinct from the three C. sputorum biovars. Pairwise digital DNA-DNA hybridization values identified these strains as C. sputorum , and the pairwise average nucleotide identity values were consistent with those observed between current Campylobacter subspecies pairs. Standard phenotypic testing was also performed. All strains are microaerobic, anaerobic, motile, Gram-negative and oxidase- and catalase-positive; cells are curved rods or spirals. Strains can be distinguished from the C. sputorum biovars by the presence of alkaline phosphatase activity and triphenyltetrazolium chloride reduction and absence of nitrate reduction. The data presented here show that these strains represent a novel subspecies within C. sputorum , for which the name C. sputorum subsp. bovis subsp. nov. (type strain RM8705 T =LMG 32300 T =CCUG 75470 T ) is proposed.

Campylobacteriosis is an infectious zoonotic disease caused by the genus Campylobacter. The disease is transmitted from animals to humans predominantly through the consumption of contaminated food and water. However, the lack of information on the status of Campylobacter makes it difficult to quantify the role of camel meat in the dissemination of the pathogen. A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2022 to August 2023 to investigate the occurrence of Campylobacter and associated risk factors and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Campylobacter species from camels slaughtered at municipal abattoirs in the towns of Harar, Babile, Jigjiga and Dire Dawa in eastern Ethiopia. A total of 324 (146 carcass swabs, 146 camel feces and 32 abattoir environmental swab samples) were collected and analyzed using TaqMan real-time PCR and culture techniques following standard procedures. In addition, antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed using the disk diffusion method for eight antimicrobial agents according to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute. The overall prevalence of Campylobacter was 7.7%. Campylobacter was more frequently detected from carcasses and surface contact environmental swabs. We isolated Campylobacter at the genus level from approximately half of the PCR-positive samples, representing 54.2% (13 out of 24) of the total. The isolation levels of C. jejuni and C. coli were also 5.56% and 2.2%, respectively, which varied significantly (p = 0.037) based on sample type and site. The odds of occurrence of C. jejuni in samples collected from abattoir environments was 7.52 times greater than those in carcass and fecal samples. We detected resistance to chloramphenicol (78.6%), followed by amoxicillin (71.4%). However, 93%, 78.6%, and 71.4% of the isolates were susceptible to ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, and nalidixic acid, respectively. Multidrug resistance (MDR) was detected in 60% of the isolates. Of these MDR isolates, 9 (75%) were C. jejuni and 3 (25%) were C. coli. This study revealed that a considerable proportion of multidrug-resistant Campylobacter species circulate in both camel meat and abattoir environments. This indicates possible carcass cross-contamination by Campylobacter during slaughtering that can pose a threat to humans and limit therapeutic options, which could be prevented by applying good hygienic practices at abattoirs. Therefore, abattoir workers need to be aware of abattoir hygienic standard operating procedures. The objective of this study was to determine prevalence and perform genomic analysis of Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. isolated from different stages of an integrated NAE broiler complex. Environmental samples were screened with 3M-Molecular Detection System (MDS) and MDS positive samples were further processed for confirmation of results and identification. Core genome-based phylogenies were built for both bacteria isolated from this study along with selected NCBI genomes. The odds ratios and 95% confidence limits were compared among stages and sample types (α < 0.05) using multivariable model. Based on MDS results, 4% and 18% of total samples were positive for Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. respectively. The odds of Salmonella detection in hatchery samples were 2.58 times as likely as compared to its detection in production farms' samples (P = 0.151) while the odds of Campylobacter detection in production farms' samples were 32.19 times as likely as its detection in hatchery (P = 0.0015). Similarly, the odds of Campylobacter detection in boot swabs, soil, water, and miscellaneous samples were statistically significant (P < 0.05) as compared with fly paper as reference group. The serovars identified for Salmonella were Typhimurium, Barranquilla, Liverpool, Kentucky, Enteritidis, Luciana, and Rough&#95;O:r:1,5. For Campylobacter, the species identified were Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. Phylogeny results show close genetic relatedness among bacterial strains isolated from different locations within the same stage and between different stages. The results show possibility of multiple entry points of such bacteria entering broiler complex and can potentially contaminate the final raw product in the processing plant. Background: Foodborne pathogens such as Campylobacter jejuni are responsible for a large proportion of the gastrointestinal infections worldwide associated with poultry meat. Campylobacter spp. can be found in the chicken fecal microbiome and can contaminate poultry meat during the slaughter process. Commonly used sampling methods to detect Campylobacter spp. at poultry farms use fecal droppings or boot swabs in combination with conventional culture techniques or PCR. In this pilot study, we have used air filtering and filters spiked with mock communities in combination with shotgun metagenomics to detect Campylobacter and test the applicability of this approach for the detection and characterization of foodborne pathogens. To the best of our knowledge is this the first study that combines air filtering with shotgun metagenomic sequencing for detection and characterization of Campylobacter., Results: Analysis of air filters spiked with different levels of Campylobacter, into a background of mock or poultry house communities, indicated that we could detect as little as 200 colony forming units (CFU) Campylobacter per sample using our protocols. The results indicate that even with limited sequencing effort we could detect Campylobacter in the samples analysed in this study. We observed significant amounts of Campylobacter in real-life samples from poultry houses using both real-time PCR as well as shotgun metagenomics, suggesting that the flocks in both houses were infected with Campylobacter spp. Interestingly, in both houses we find diverse microbial communities present in the indoor air which reflect the fecal microbiome of poultry. Some of the identified genera such as Staphylococcus, Escherichia and Pseudomonas are known to contain opportunistic pathogenic species., Conclusions: These results show that air sampling of poultry houses in combination with shotgun metagenomics can detect and identify Campylobacter spp. present at low levels. This is important since early detection of Campylobacter enables measures to be put in place to ensure the safety of broiler products, animal health and public health. The epidemiology of Campylobacter species in wild birds is still poorly understood. This study describes the occurrence and genetic diversity of Campylobacter in adult and nestlings of yellow-legged gulls, highlighting differences between breeding locations. The gulls were captured in Croatia between 2021 and 2023. A cloacal swab was taken from each individual and tested for the presence of Campylobacter. Isolated Campylobacter species were genotyped using the multilocus sequence typing (MLST) method. A total of 1071 gulls were captured and sampled, of which 152 samples were identified as Campylobacter species, with Campylobacter jejuni (9.90%) being the most frequently isolated bacterium, followed by Campylobacter lari (3.36%) and Campylobacter coli (0.93%). Complete sequence type (ST) profiles were generated for 141 isolates: 100 C. jejuni, 33 C. lari, and 8 C. coli. A significant difference in the occurrence of positive Campylobacter species was found depending on the sampling sites, while both sampling site and age were significant for the occurrence of C. jejuni. Adults and nestlings showed high genetic diversity for C. jejuni and C. lari, and there were no significant differences between strains isolated from adults and nestlings or between sites, suggesting a high genotype flow in the studied gull population., (© 2024 The Author(s). Nine Campylobacter strains were isolated from cattle and feral swine faeces: three were recovered during a 2007 Campylobacter -associated outbreak linked to a dairy, and the other six were isolated during a 2009-2010 survey of farms and ranches in Central California. The species identification of these strains could not be determined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing but were most similar to Campylobacter concisus and Campylobacter mucosalis . Additional atpA typing indicated that the nine strains composed a discrete novel clade related to C. concisus and C. mucosalis . A polyphasic study was undertaken here to clarify their taxonomic position. Phylogenetic analyses were performed based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and the concatenated sequences of 330 core genes. The core gene analysis placed the nine strains into a clade well separated from the other Campylobacter taxa, indicating that these strains represent a novel Campylobacter species. Pairwise digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values between these strains and other campylobacters are lower than 16 and 73%, respectively, further supporting their placement into a novel taxon. Standard phenotypic testing was performed. All strains are microaerobic or anaerobic, motile, Gram-negative, slightly-curved rods that are oxidase positive but catalase negative. Strains can be distinguished from the other catalase-negative Campylobacter species using phenotypic markers such as motility, oxidase activity, cephalothin resistance, hippuricase activity, growth at 30 °C, and α-haemolysis. The data presented here show that these strains represent a novel species within Campylobacter , for which the name Campylobacter californiensis sp. nov. (type strain RM6914 T =LMG 32304 T =CCUG 75329 T ) is proposed.

Objective: The Autonomous Community of Galicia has adopted DECREE 216/2011 on health standards for poultry production, in addition to the Spanish national programs. However, no program has yet been implemented to eradicate campylobacteriosis, which shares the same reservoir. The aim of this study was to compare the evolution of Salmonella spp. isolates with respect to those of Campylobacter spp. in faecal samples received by the Microbiology Department., Methods: A retrospective descriptive comparative study was conducted through the Laboratory Information System (SIL) of Salmonella spp. isolated against Campylobacter spp. in faeces between 2011 and 2022 at the Lucus Augusti University Hospital (HULA), Lugo, Spain., Results: A total of 35,704 stool samples were analysed, of which 3,045 were positive. 751 Salmonella spp. were isolated. Statistical differences were observed in the annual distribution (p<0.01), with a clear turning point in 2018. Five hundred and five patients required hospital care, especially in 2014 with 72 patients (69%). On the other hand, 1,587 Campylobacter spp. were isolated. Required hospital care 1,002 patients during the study, with a peak in 2019 with 111 cases (62%)., Conclusions: The reduction of salmonellosis cases and the maintenance of campylobacteriosis cases are directly related to the implementation of DECREE 216/2011. Enumeration of Campylobacter from environmental waters can be difficult due to its low concentrations, which can still pose a significant health risk. Spectrophotometry is an approach commonly used for fast detection of water-borne pollutants in water samples, but it has not been used for pathogen detection, which is commonly done through a laborious and time-consuming culture or qPCR Most Probable Number enumeration methods (i.e., MPN-PCR approaches). In this study, we proposed a new method, MPN-Spectro-ML, that can provide rapid evidence of Campylobacter detection and, hence, water concentrations. After an initial incubation, the samples were analysed using a spectrophotometer, and the spectrum data were used to train three machine learning (ML) models (i.e., supported vector machine - SVM, logistic regression-LR, and random forest-RF). The trained models were used to predict the presence of Campylobacter in the enriched water samples and estimate the most probable number (MPN). Over 100 stormwater, river, and creek samples (including both fresh and brackish water) from rural and urban catchments were collected to test the accuracy of the MPN-Spectro-ML method under various scenarios and compared to a previously standardised MPN-PCR method. Differences in the spectrum were found between positive and negative control samples, with two distinctive absorbance peaks between 540-542nm and 575-576nm for positive samples. Further, the three ML models had similar performance irrespective of the scenario tested with average prediction accuracy (ACC) and false negative rates at 0.763 and 13.8%, respectively. However, the predicted MPN of Campylobacter from the new method varied from the traditional MPN-PCR method, with a maximum Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of 0.44 for the urban catchment dataset. Nevertheless, the MPN values based on these two methods were still comparable, considering the confidence intervals and large uncertainties associated with MPN estimation. The study reveals the potential of this novel approach for providing interim evidence of the presence and levels of Campylobacter within environmental water bodies. Aims: Campylobacteriosis, caused by Campylobacter spp., is one of the most important foodborne zoonotic diseases in the world and a common cause of gastroenteritis. In the European Union, campylobacteriosis is considered the most common zoonotic disease, with over 10,000 cases in 2020 alone. This high occurrence highlights the need of more efficient surveillance methods and identification of key points., Methods and Results: Herein, we evaluated and identified key points of Campylobacter spp. occurrence along the Spanish food chain during 2015-2020, based on the following variables: product, stage and region. We analysed a dataset provided by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition using a machine learning algorithm (random forests). Campylobacter presence was influenced by the three selected explanatory variables, especially by product, followed by region and stage. Among the studied products, meat, especially poultry and sheep, presented the highest probability of occurrence of Campylobacter, where the bacterium was present in the initial, intermediate and final stages (e.g., wholesale, retail) of the food chain. The presence in final stages may represent direct consumer exposure to the bacteria., Conclussions: By using the random forest method, this study contributes to the identification of Campylobacter key points and the evaluation of control efforts in the Spanish food chain., (© 2024 The Author(s). The study aimed to isolate and identify Aliarcobacter spp. and Campylobacter spp. from the uterine contents of cows and to determine the susceptibilities of the isolates to various antibiotics. For this purpose, a total of 63 cows (with repeat breeder, metritis, and healthy) uterine contents were collected from a slaughterhouse. Pre-enrichment and membrane filtration methods were used to isolate Aliarcobacter and Campylobacter spp., and phenotypic and molecular methods were used to identify the isolates. Antibacterial susceptibilities of the isolates were determined by the disc diffusion method. A total of 11 (17.46 %, 11/63) samples were found positive for both genera, and 12 isolates were obtained from these samples. Out of 9 Campylobacter isolates, 5, 3, and 1 were identified as C. jejuni, C. sputorum, and C. hyointestinalis, respectively. Also, two and one of Aliarcobacter spp. isolates were identified as Aliarcobacter sp. and A. butzleri, respectively. All isolates of both genera were found to be sensitive to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, ampicillin, erythromycin, and enrofloxacin and resistant to trimethoprim + sulfamethoxazole. This is the first study that reported on the isolation of C. hyointestinalis from cattle uterine contents. It was concluded that Campylobacter and Aliarcobacter species should be considered among the most important etiological agents in uterine infections that cause infertility in cows. Background: Campylobacter is the most common food-borne pathogen in the European Union. In 2018, the crude incidence rate in Ireland was 63.6 per 100,000 population. Chicken is considered an important source of infection for humans. In 2015, the Campylobacter Stakeholders' Group (CSG) was established to reduce Campylobacter contamination levels in Irish broiler flocks., Aims: This work aimed to describe the Campylobacter monitoring programme that was established by the CSG, to analyse the results of this testing between 2019 and 2022, and to assess progress., Methods and Results: This paper describes the monitoring programme that was established by the CSG, which harmonized Campylobacter enumeration testing across all Irish broiler processors and allowed comparability of results for trend analysis. An analysis of the 2019-2022 data is presented here and compared to previous studies of Campylobacter levels in Irish broilers. An analysis of the 2019-2022 data showed a significant reduction in levels in both caeca and neck skin when the results from 2022 were compared to those from 2019 to 2020. Campylobacter spp. were detected in 37% of caecal samples from first depopulation (pre-thin) broilers and 30% of neck skin samples in 2022, with just 4% of carcases (in neck skin samples) with ≥1000 colony-forming units per gram detected in 2022. Campylobacter levels detected in Irish broilers, in the present monitoring programme were less than those reported in previous studies in both caecal and carcase samples, although not directly comparable for statistical significance because of differences in study methods., Conclusions: The cooperation between stakeholders and regulators of the Irish broiler chicken industry over the past decade has facilitated a coordinated approach to monitoring of Campylobacter levels in broilers, and implementation of control measures. Context: Routine case investigations are critical for enteric disease control and surveillance. Given limited resources and staffing, public health agencies are exploring more efficient case investigation methods., Objective: To identify and describe the advantages and disadvantages of using online surveys to supplement routine enteric disease case investigations., Design: We evaluated routine Campylobacter interview data collected via telephone vs online by interviewers with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment., Setting and Participation: Colorado laboratory-confirmed Campylobacter cases reported from September 1, 2020, through December 31, 2021., Main Outcome Measures: We calculated modality preference, response rates, and data quality (missing and unknown answers) and compared demographics (age, gender, and urban vs rural) by modality. Estimated staff time savings and investigation timeliness were compared., Results: Modality preference was split among the 966 contacted Campylobacter cases (46% telephone, 50% online, and 4% refusal). Among online respondents, 57% completed the survey for an overall 63% response rate. Females and those 18 to 44 years of age were most likely to select (55%, 60%) and complete (57%, 66%) the online survey, while those under 18 and over 65 years of age were least likely to select (47%, 45%) or complete (53%, 46%). Those who identified as non-Hispanic Black were most likely to select online (62%), whereas those who identified as mixed-race non-Hispanic and non-Hispanic White had the highest completion (78%, 60%). Modality preference was comparable by geography; however, rural residents had higher completion rates (61%). Data quality and completeness were comparable between modalities. Completing the 274 online surveys via telephone would have taken an estimated 78 hours of additional staff time., Conclusions: Online surveys can increase public health efficiency and capacity while maintaining data quality. However, use should be limited to high-burden, low-resource pathogens due to reduced response rates. Goats are often asymptomatic carriers of Campylobacter , including the foodborne pathogen Campylobacter jejuni. Infections can have significant and economically detrimental health outcomes in both humans and animals. The primary objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of Campylobacter in U.S. goat herds. Campylobacter species were isolated from 106 of 3,959 individual animals and from 42 of 277 goat operations that participated in fecal sample collection as part of the National Animal Health Monitoring System Goat 2019 study. Weighted animal-level prevalence was 2.3% (SE = 0.5%) and operation prevalence was 13.0% (SE = 3.2%). Animal-level prevalence ranged widely from 0 to 70.0%, however, 52.4% of positive operations (22/42) had only a single isolate. C. jejuni was the most frequently isolated species (68.9%; 73/106), followed by C. coli (29.3%, 31/106). A total of 46.2% (36/78) of viable isolates were pan-susceptible to 8 antimicrobials. Resistance to tetracycline (TET) was observed in 44.9% (35/78) of isolates, while 12.8% (10/78) were resistant to ciprofloxacin (CIP) and nalidixic acid (NAL). Among all isolates, a single resistance profile CIP-NAL-TET was observed in 3.8% (3/78) of isolates. A total of 35 unique sequence types (STs) were identified, 11 of which are potentially new. Multiple C. jejuni STs were observed in 48.1% (13/27) of positive operations. Goats with access to surface water, operations reporting antibiotics in the feed or water (excluding ionophores and coccidiostats), and operations reporting abortions and without postabortion management tasks had significantly greater odds of being Campylobacter positive. This snapshot of the U.S. goat population enriches the limited pool of knowledge on Campylobacter species presence in U.S. goats.

Background: Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED) is an acquired disorder of asymptomatic altered gut function, the etiology of which is unknown. EED is postulated to be a major contributor to growth faltering in early childhood in regions where early-life enteropathogenic carriage is prevalent. Few studies have examined the critical organ (the upper small bowel) with enteropathogens in the evolution of small bowel disease., Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine if fecal enteropathogenic detection predicts subsequent EED histology., Methods: Fecal samples were obtained from undernourished children aged <2 y without diarrhea enrolled in 3 cohort studies, who failed nutritional intervention and subsequently underwent endoscopy. Duodenal biopsies from 245 (Bangladesh n = 120, Pakistan n = 57, and Zambia n = 68) children were scored using a semiquantitative histologic grading protocol. Thirteen enteropathogens were sought in common across the 3 centers using TaqMan array cards (TAC) (Bangladesh and Pakistan) and the Luminex platform (Zambia). An additional 18 pathogens and 32 virulence loci were sought by TAC and included in sensitivity analyses restricted to TAC data., Results: Multivariable linear regressions adjusting for study center, age at stool collection, and stool-to-biopsy interval demonstrated the following: 1) an association of norovirus and Shigella detection with subsequent enterocyte injury [β 0.2 (95% CI: 0.1, 0.3); P = 0.002 and β 0.2 (95% CI: 0.0, 0.3); P = 0.008, respectively], 2) association of Campylobacter with intraepithelial lymphocytes [β 0.2 (95% CI: 0.0, 0.4); P = 0.046], and 3) association of Campylobacter and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli with a summative EED histopathology index score [β 4.2 (95% CI: 0.8, 7.7); P = 0.017 and β 3.9 (95% CI: 0.5, 7.3); P = 0.027, respectively]. All but 2 of these associations (Shigella-enterocyte injury and Campylobacter-index score) were also demonstrated in TAC-only sensitivity analyses, which identified additional associations between other pathogens, pathogen burden, or virulence loci primarily with the same histologic parameters., Conclusions: The detection of some enteropathogens in asymptomatic infections is associated with subsequent EED histopathology. Campylobacter is gram-negative bacteria considered the predominant genera isolated from poultry samples and associated with gastroenteritis. Due to the problems in conventional cultural methods of time-consuming and technically demanding requirements, a rapid and feasible method for their identification and discrimination of the closely related spp. Including Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter fetus, and Campylobacter jejuni is needed. This study analyzes the chicken and sheep meats samples (n = 125) using culture and pre-enrichment-based Quadraplex real-time PCR by targeting OrfA, CstA, HipO, and 16 S rRNA genes of C. coli, C. fetus, C. jejuni and Campylobacter spp. Respectively. The analysis of 125 chicken and sheep meat samples by culture and real-time PCR showed high concordance between the results of the two methods. The present study show high prevalence of Campylobacter species (35% and 32% from chicken and meat respectively) of which C. jejuni were the most abundant. Reaction efficiencies were between 90 and 110%, and detect as low as 8.9 fg in C. jejuni. The need for quick detection and discrimination methods in sheep and chicken meat can be met using the described Quadraplex real-time PCR methodology., (© 2024. Gastroenteritis is the frequent clinical manifestation of infection by Campylobacter spp., whereas invasive infections such as bacteremia are less commonly reported. We report 12 cases of Campylobacter bacteremia from a tertiary-care hospital in India and describe their relatively unique characteristics compared with the previously published reports. These cases were detected after the introduction of new blood culture media. The most common symptoms were fever (eight cases, 67%), abdominal pain (six cases, 50%), and vomiting (four cases, 33%), whereas only two cases (17%) had diarrhea. Chronic liver disease was the common underlying condition affecting eight patients (75%). The median Child-Pugh and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease scores were 9 (interquartile range: 7-9.5) and 20 (interquartile range: 15-23) respectively. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated in six patients (50%), two of whom had preceding diarrhea and one patient who had culture evidence of C. jejuni in ascitic fluid. The in-hospital mortality was 8%, but this was due to subsequent Escherichia coli sepsis.
