This series consists of ledgers listing accounts of New York State with banks in which Canal Fund moneys were deposited.

These statements from the Comptroller’s Office include daily bank balances to the credit of various funds constituting the Canal Fund.

This series contains quarterly returns of stockholders of the State's "Million Loan" and of canal loans between 1817 and 1823. The lists of stockholders include dates; names of stockholders; amount of stock held; and interest due.

This series contains offers to lend money to the Canal Fund in return for stock. The loan proposals usually provide date; name of lender; purpose of loan; amount of the loan; and per cent interest on stock.

This series from the Office of the Auditor of the Canal Department consists of correspondence of the Canal Auditor relating to financial matters such as salaries, contracts and tolls.

The Commissioners of the Canal Fund managed both revenues and debts associated with the development of the state's canal system. Subjects documented in this series include disbursement of funds, stock purchases, redemption of canal stock by individual stock holders, and the Erie Canal enlargement fund. This volume is a ledger accounts of Commissioners of the Canal Fund for Erie and Champlain Canal Fund and stock, and for stock of the Cayuga and Seneca, Crooked Lake, Chenango, Oswego, and Black River canals. There are also accounts with the Canal Commissioners, Superintendents of Repairs, and banks in New York City, Albany, and elsewhere in which tolls and canal loans premiums were deposited.

This volume is a report of J. B. Stittson, Division Engineer of the Western Division of the Canal system. The report consists of: a tabular statement of engineering expenses on each subdivision of the Western Division for the year 1850; statements showing length and estimated costs of work done and to be completed; and remarks of the Division Engineer regarding prices, quantities, construction, engineering issues, and progress of work.

This volume is a register of contracts, field and office books, and other matters related to the Erie Canal enlargement in Monroe County. It also contains abstracts of expenditures presented by engineers of the Western Division for work on the Erie and Genesee Valley Canals.

This volume indexes both the Engrossed minutes of series A1077 and the Rough Minutes of series A1076. Each entry gives the name, subject, date and nature of action.

This series consists of deeds, mortgages, bonds, assignments entries maps of lots in Buffalo. The land was conveyed to the Commissioners of the Canal Fund as collateral for two judgments against Thadeus W. Patchin, who filed for bankruptcy in 1874. Also included are text searches, copies resolutions, and other documents relating to this issue.

This series consists of accounts submitted by the Canal Commissioners for audit by the Comptroller's office. It includes original contracts made by the Commissioners for the Construction of the Erie and Champlain Canals with their locks, feeders, aqueducts, etc., accompanied by contractors' receipts for payment; check rolls for labor submitted by Superintendents of construction; abstracts and vouchers of the principal engineers and their assistants; and various documents relating to canal finances.

The register of State bonds is organized by alphabetically, M-Z only, by city or town of bank holding the bond. Each entry includes name and location of bank; date of maturity, name, and amount of security;; date of bond and rate of interest.. Bonds were issued for many purposes, including highways, bridges, parks, railroad crossing elimination, unemployment relief, etc. Also contains bonds fro Port Authority of New York and other authorities.

This series consists of articles of agreement between the State of New York in a bank, specifying terms and conditions of deposit of monies of the canal fund; and of forms supplied by the Canal Department outlining the terms and conditions of the bank directors acceptance of the agreement. Also included are letters, memoranda, and canceled checks.

The documents in this series from Office of the Auditor of the Canal Department consist of vouchers, receipts, bills, clearances, and unidentified documents. Most are routine financial documents but a few concern canal operations.

Most of the documents are statements of deposit of Canal Fund monies in banks across the State. Generally they include date of statement, name bank, and amounts deposited on various dates. Interfiled with the statements are receipts, canceled checks, certificates of deposit, lists of canal toll deposits, and resolutions of bank board of directors for the deposit of funds.

This schedule provides date of payment by Commissioners of the Canal Fund; surrender date of stock; name of holder; interest rate and issuing year; and amount of certificate.

These land sales records were made by the Surveyor General in compliance with resolutions of the Commissioners of the Land Office. The entries provide date of sale; description of the land; price; name of purchaser; and certification by the Surveyor General of the sale of the land.

This register includes two entries for each check, then debiting the account of the Canal Commissioners and crediting the bank on which the check was drawn. Entries provide check number; date; account; bank drawn on; and payee.

Included are accounts with the Commissioners of the Canal Fund, Superintendent of Repairs, and banks in New York City and Albany in which Canal Fund monies were deposited, accounts for expenses on canals, and for interest on canal stock.

These records are abstracts or summaries of audited accounts for expenditures on canals, including accounts with Canal Commissioners. Entries include contract or voucher number, name of payee, amount, and occasionally a brief note of purpose of the expenditure. Volume 2 includes accounts for the enlargement of the Erie Canal (1835-1840).

This volume contains state treasurer’s account of canal tolls and salt duties deposited in various banks in upstate New York as a security for repayment of State canal stock as a security for repayment of State canal stock. Canal toll receipts and salt duties are entered as debit and corresponding deposits in the Ontario, Geneva, Rochester, Utica, Ontario, Mohawk, Waterford Branch, Troy, and Mechanic’s and Farmer’s Banks are entered as credit. Monthly and annual totals are included.

This is a book of receipts for transfers of New York State six percent canal stock through the transfer office in New York City. Each entry includes transfer number; date; parties to conveyance and their residences; amount; and signatures of conveyor and a witness.

These records document the operation of canals, including: rough tallies of cargo loaded on canal boat “Sovereign” at various ports; auditor’s warrants for payments from Canal Fund through the Manhattan Company; and section contracts for enlargement of the Cayuga and Seneca canal, 1859; inventory of furniture in possession of collector of canal tolls at Lockport, 1866; and statements of publication of notices by Commissioners of the Canal fund.

This series documents the activities of the Commissioners of the Canal Fund. It includes an 1818 report listing receipts and payments and explaining certain aspects of the report; resolutions passed by the commissioners in 1825 regarding tolls, contracts, and other matters and providing the date and names of the commissioners present at the meeting.

Entries provide name of bank, amounts of money on loan and on deposit, amount remaining in each bank, and grant totals. Money was presumably for receipts from tolls deposited by Commissioners of the Canal Fund.

This series consists of three pages listing contracts with banks allowing an interest on deposit of Canal monies at sixty days for 4.5 or 5% interest. Each entry provides the date of the contract; contract number; the name of the bank; and rate of interest.

This series, arrange chronologically, consists of entries for deposits and withdrawals in the account of the Commissioners of the Canal Fund in the Canal Bank.

This series consists of deeds, mortgages, bonds, assignments and traced maps of lots in Buffalo. In 1881 the Commissioners of the Canal Fund empowered the State Treasurer to settle or cancel back taxes on the Buffalo lots, and this series also contains taxes searches and related documents from this action.
