Abstract

This paper describes a pattern recognition approach aiming to estimate fuel cell duration time from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. It consists in first extracting features from both real and imaginary parts of the impedance spectrum. A parametric model is considered in the case of the real part, whereas regression model with latent variables is used in the latter case. Then, a linear regression model using different subsets of extracted features is used fo r the estimation of fuel cell time duration. The performances of the proposed approach are evaluated on experimental data set to show its feasibility. Abstract

SGE 2020, Symposium de Génie Electrique 8 JUILLET 2021, NANTES, FRANC, NANTES, FRANCE, 05-/07/2021 - 08/07/2021; Le travail réalisé vise à diagnostiquer des piles à combustible avec une instrumentation et des temps de calculs réduits. L'article décrit un outil de diagnostic non-intrusif, basé sur la seule mesure de la tension du stack et ne nécessitant pas d'excitation externe spécifique du générateur électrochimique. La méthode repose sur des techniques d'analyse du signal (calculs d'enveloppes et de fréquences instantanées) et de traitement de l'information (reconnaissances de formes). Un large panel de défauts peut être identifié (variations de débits, pressions, températures ; présence de monoxyde de carbone ; combinaisons de défauts simultanés), y compris lorsqu'ils correspondent à de faibles déviations vis-à-vis du fonctionnement nominal. La portabilité de la méthode a été étudiée sur 2 stacks PEMFC, conçus pour des applications différentes : transport et stationnaire.

Abstract

The results of a durability test performed during 1000 h on a proton exchange or polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell are analyzed using some well-suited design of experiment techniques. The response surface methodology is adopted to model the performance degradation over ageing time from various load current--fuel cell voltage curves recorded at regular time-spaced intervals and for various air utilization rates. The dual response surface approach is employed to determine the most convenient operating conditions for the cells (load current and air stoichiometry rate levels), leading to a tradeoff between elevated electrical efficiency and low voltage variability versus ageing time and cell positions in the stack. In addition, some electrochemical impedance spectra are used to provide some physical interpretations and to corroborate the observations made from the static measurements. The work shows notably the benefit of using some variable stoichiometry rates through ageing time to get high-power levels and stable performances as well. Abstract

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (FCs) are often considered as the most promising power-generation sources for nextgeneration electrical or hybrid electrical vehicles. However, areas needing further development are the improvements of the efficiency, durability, and reliability of the whole powertrain. Moreover, freeze start of the FC system is also a major issue. To reach these aims, diagnosis solutions of FC stacks and systems can speed up the development cycle of this new technology. The aim of this paper is, thus, to propose some guidelines within the framework of embedded FC system durability diagnosis. Index Terms--Diagnosis, fuel cell, fuzzy clustering, transportation applications.

Battery Tech 2016, Dubaï, EMIRATS ARABES UNIS, 08-/12/2016 - 09/12/2016; In the era of renewable and clean energies, the demand for less polluting energy generation technologies has increased rapidly. Among these technologies, the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) receives much attention, as it can convert the hydrogen chemical energy into electricity with high efficiency, and also produce water and heat. However, to make this technology commercially viable, some challenges still remain. Especially the extension of the fuel cell lifespan and reliability are identified as major concerns in the research and industry sectors. The lifetime and reliability objectives can notably be achieved by implementing a diagnosis tool capable of high performances, whatever the stack design and the operating environment. In this context, we propose a new tool based on the investigation of singularity measurements stamped in fuel cell stack voltage signals. Indeed, measuring local singularities on voltage signals provides suitable information about the evolving dynamics of non-stationary and non-linear processes involved in fuel cell systems. In our study, two PEMFC stacks are experimented to evaluate the portability of our diagnosis tool. The first one is an 8 cell stack designed for automotive applications and manufactured by CEA LITEN, France. The second one is an 12 cell stack dedicated to stationary application (micro combined heat and power - µCHP application). It is designed and marketed by Riesaer Brennstoffzellentechnik GmbH and Inhouse Engineering GmbH, Germany. The steps of our diagnosis strategy are the following ones: - Two PEMFC stacks are operated under a variety of conditions (nominal, and faults i.e. more or less severe deviations from the nominal conditions) using characterization testbenches developed in lab. The deviations from the nominal conditions refer either to single fault types or to combinations of different faults. - The recorded stack voltages are analyzed using a Wavelet Leader based Multifractal Analysis (WLMA) in order to identify their singularity spectra as fault signatures. - A feature selection method is used to select the most relevant singularity features and to remove the redundant ones. - The selected singularity features are classified using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier according to the considered operating situations (faults and combinations of faults). The obtained results show that the proposed PEMFC diagnosis tool allows identifying simple operating failures and even more complicated situations that contain several failure types, for different stack sizes, powers and technologies for different power application environments. International audience; The problem of durability of fuel cell technology is central for its spreading and commercialization. There is therefore a growing need to build accurate diagnosis tools which can give the operating state of the fuel cell during their use. When supervised machine learning approaches are used to build such diagnosis tools, they generally require a large amount of labeled data. Collection and annotation of data can be either difficult to perform or time consuming. In this paper, authors are interested in the monitoring of fuel cells in an unsupervised framework, meaning that no labels are required to learn the diagnosis model. The aim is to build a monitoring tool able to easily visualize the State Of Health of full cells fromelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy measures, showing thus its evolution from fault free case ("normal" behaviour) to defective classes such as drying or flooding. The proposed approach is based on Self Organizing Maps (SOM) which have shown their performance to solve fault detection and prediction in many industrial systems. By automatically visualizing the data into a two-dimensional space, the interpretation of the results have become easy and instinctive. The approach also allows the clustering of the data into different groups of classes, thus enabling the classification of new observations. Experimental results carried out on real data sets have shown the efficiency of the proposed approach with respect to standard supervised and unsupervised classification approaches.

Abstract

International audience; The work presents the results of experiments related to the electrical and dynamical behaviour of a 500W, twenty cell Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) stack operated under fault condition and connected to an anti-parallel diode acting as a by-pass. The stack is placed in an experimental set-up that reproduces the electrical coupling in series of two fuel cells. The results allow the evaluation of the by-pass diode solution in the case of specific degraded working modes such as the break of the gas reactant feeding. The experiments presented in this article constitute an extrapolation and a complementary investigation of the preliminary results already achieved on a two cell PEFC stack and which had demonstrated the capability of the reverse diode to electrically isolate a fuel cell stack under fault. The proposed experiments focus on the dynamic behaviour of the stack under degraded working modes and point out the key-role of the fuel cell stack impedance in the triggering of the anti-parallel diode switching.

Abstract

The aim of the thesis was to study the fuel cell system hybridisation in the case of on-board applications (light vehicle). A large part of the work consisted in testing various architectures of hybrid sources : fuel cell system/supercapacitors, thanks to the simulation. Several models were developed and used according to the considered objective. The quasi-static model of the fuell cell system allows to predict, quickly and qualitatively, the electrical variables involved in the power train, on a drive speed versus time cycle, with more or less complex power split strategies; a more complete dynamical model was implemented in order to study transient phenomena. An experimental study was aimed at making use of the fuel cell system hybridisation concept. The demonstrator will enable the validation of the models and energy management strategies developed in the first part of the work. It also represents a media device., L'objectif de la thèse a été l'étude de l'hybridation d'un groupe électrogène à pile à combustible (GE à PAC) dans le cas d'une application embarquée. Une partie importante du travail a consisté à tester en simulation diverses architectures de sources hybrides GE à PAC/superconducteurs. Plusieurs modèles ont été mis au point et utilisés suivant l'objectif envisagé. Le modèle du GE à PAC quasi-statique permet de prédire de manière rapide et qualitative les grandeurs électriques mises en jeu dans la chaîne sur des profils de mission temps - vitesse avec des stratégies de gestion de l'énergie plus ou moins complexes ; un modèle dynamique plus élaboré a été introduit pour étudier certains phénomènes transitoires. Une étude expérimentale met en oeuvre le concept d'hybridation de GE à PAC. 50. A New High Voltage Impedance Spectrometer for the Diagnostics of Fuel Cell Stacks

Abstract

This paper presents a novel architecture of an impedance spectrometer dedicated to the characterization and diagnostics of large fuel cell stacks operated in galvanostatic mode. The validation tests are first performed on a single proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Then, experiments are carried out on a 20-cell PEMFC stack delivering more significant power levels. The proposed impedancemeter allows spectrum measurements on cells located in the middle of the stack, where common mode potentials are usually too high for commercial devices. Moreover, the impedances of different individual cells in the stack are acquired with a synchronous measurement reference (global stack impedance). This capability allows distinguishing any singular cell behavior or drift effect of operational parameters (e.g., stack temperature and polarization current).
