Abstract

The mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in the newly discovered iron-based superconductors is unresolved. We use spectroscopic imaging--scanning tunneling microscopy to study the electronic structure of a representative compound Ca[Fe.sub.1.94][Co.sub.0.06][As.sub.2] in the 'parent' state from which this superconductivity emerges. Static, unidirectional electronic nanostructures of dimension eight times the inter--iron-atom distance [a.sub.Fe-Fe] and aligned along the crystal a axis are observed. In contrast, the delocalized electronic states detectable by quasiparticle interference imaging are dispersive along the b axis only and are consistent with a nematic [[alpha].sub.2] band with an apparent band folding having wave vector [??] [congruent] [+ or -]2[pi]/[8a.sub.Fe-Fe] along the a axis. All these effects rotate through 90 degrees at orthorhombic twin boundaries, indicating that they are bulk properties. As none of these phenomena are expected merely due to crystal symmetry, underdoped ferropnictides may exhibit a more complex electronic nematic state than originally expected. 10.1126/science.1181083

Abstract

Heavy fermion compounds represent one of the most strongly correlated forms of electronic matter and give rise to low temperature states that range from small moment ordering to exotic superconductivity, both of which are often in close proximity to quantum critical points. These strong electronic correlations are associated with the transfer of entropy from the local moment degrees of freedom to the conduction electrons, and, as such, are intimately related to the low temperature degeneracy of the (originally) moment bearing ion. Here we report the discovery of six closely related Yb-based heavy fermion compounds, Yb[T.sub.2][Zn.sub.20], that are members of the larger family of dilute rare earth bearing compounds: R[T.sub.2][Zn.sub.20] (T = Fe, Co, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir). This discovery doubles the total number of Yb-based heavy fermion materials. Given these compounds' dilute nature, systematic changes in T only weakly perturb the Yb site and allow for insight into the effects of degeneracy on the thermodynamic and transport properties of these model correlated electron systems. correlated electron | intermetallic compound

Abstract

Studies of the interactions between magnetic order and the flux line lattice (FLL) in the (RE) Ni(sub 2)B (sub 2)C intermetallic borocarbides for (RE)=Tm and Er is reviewed using small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and magneto-transport. This state reveals a highly disordered FLL and a striking increase in the critical current, both arising from the strong ferromagnetic pairbreaking.

Abstract

We study the correlation between chemical composition and vortex dynamics in Ni-doped CaK(Fe1-xNix)4As4 (x=0, 0.015, 0.025, 0.03, and 0.05) single crystals by performing measurements of the critical current densities Jc and the flux creep rates S. The magnetic relaxation of all the crystals is well described by the collective creep theory. Some materials can exhibit the properties of ferromagnetism amd superconductivity, but both long-range states are normally mutually exclusive. A new study of the compound TmNi2B2C investigates the effect of small-angle neutron scattering which reveals that the symmetry of the flux-line lattice and the magnetic modulation are strongly coupled.
