Abstract

Various stripline structures and flip chip interconnect designs for high-speed digital communication systems implemented in low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrates are studied in this paper. Specifically, two different transition designs from edge launch 2.4 millimeter connectors to stripline transmission lines embedded in LTCC are discussed. After characterizing the DuPont (sup trademark) 9K7 green tape, different designs are proposed to improve signal integrity for high-speed digital data. The full-wave simulations and experimental data validate the presented designs over a broad frequency band from Direct Current to 50 gigahertz and beyond.

10. Early development of fern gametophytes in microgravity

Abstract

Dormant spores of the fern Ceratopteris richardii were flown on Shuttle mission STS-93 to evaluate the effects of micro-g on their development and on their pattern of gene expression. Prior to flight the spores were sterilized and sown into one of two environments: (1) Microscope slides in a video-microscopy module; and (2) Petri dishes. All spores were then stored in darkness until use. Spore germination was initiated on orbit after exposure to light. For the spores on microscope slides, cell level changes were recorded through the clear spore coat of the spores by video microscopy. After their exposure to light, spores in petri dishes were frozen in orbit at four different time points during which on earth gravity fixes the polarity of their development. Spores were then stored frozen in Biological Research in Canister units until recovery on earth. The RNAs from these cells and from 1-g control cells were extracted and analyzed on earth after flight to assay changes in gene expression. Video microscopy results revealed that the germinated spores developed normally in microgravity, although the polarity of their development, which is guided by gravity on earth, was random in space. Differential Display-PCR analyses of RNA extracted from space-flown cells showed that there was about a 5% change in the pattern of gene expression between cells developing in micro-g compared to those developing on earth. c2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd on behalf of COSPAR.

Tom Cannon is Professor of Business Studies at Stirling University, Scotland, and Michael Willis is Management Research Fellow at Durham University Business School, England. This paper describes the results of a three year study of the issues, problems and opportunities faced by the smaller concern as it seeks to develop its exports. It has been argued that the propensity of small firms to be domestic market and service orientated runs counter to the needs of trading nations for companies able to build overseas business. The paper explores the evidence behind this and other nations, in particular whether it is true that small firms are inhibited from entering export markets and the patterns of overseas trading they follow. It also looks at whether there are any specific problems faced by small firms wanting to develop exports or international trade and what measures can be adopted to overcome these difficulties, either within the firm or by external policymakers. Growth is of great importance to long-term survival and competitive advantage of the firm. Yet despite decades of firm growth research, there is little agreement on how firms grow over time. This is partly because firm growth is a multidimensional and complex phenomenon and there is still not much of a common body of well-founded knowledge about the causes, effects or processes of growth. With more than 99 percent of all firms being small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK, growth of these firms is significant to the economy. In particular, how these firms survive and grow when facing challenges from changing external environment is an important but an under-researched area. Emerging from the strategy literature, the dynamic capability view of the firm is the ability to reconfigure resources and competences as a response to the changes from the external environment, contributing to the growth and competitive advantage of the firm. How and to what extent different dynamic capabilities provide firms with competitive advantage is a major debate within the strategy literature. One of the more recent arguments on dynamic capabilities is that they provide firms with competitive advantage by contributing to the growth of the firm. This thesis aims to investigate how SMEs achieve growth and if dynamic capabilities contribute to growth of firms. The study finds that major explanations of growth of SMEs during external uncertainty are organisational ambidexterity; diversification; dynamic managerial capabilities; and Penrose’s theory. In particular, the study finds that dynamic capabilities construct does not advance our understanding of the growth process beyond already established concepts such as Penrose’s theory. The work of Edith Penrose offers a rich and thoughtful explanation of how firms achieve and maintain growth when faced with external challenges. This thesis makes an original contribution to the existing body of knowledge in four ways. Firstly, it explores how SMEs achieve and maintain their growth during the periods of external uncertainty. Secondly, it empirically tests if dynamic capabilities construct is an explanation of growth in SME context. Thirdly, it responds to calls for more empirical and qualitative research on dynamic capabilities. Fourthly, it assesses the much-debated relationship between dynamic capabilities and competitive advantage and offers some useful insights on this link.
