Mediante la evaluación de variables estructurales y funcionales de las biopelículas se realizó una descripción de su estado y se abordó el problema del incremento en la disponibilidad de nutrientes en un río andino de alta montaña; al estudiar la participación de la microbiota bentónica en los flujos de materia y energía en los sistemas lóticos inició la generación de conocimiento sobre el tema en Colombia. Con el objetivo de evaluar la comunidad creciendo sobre sustratos artificiales y sedimentos en escala temporal y espacial en cuatro tramos en el río Tota se realizó la determinación de biomasa bacteriana de las biopelículas mediante recuento directo por epifluorescencia con DAPI y un factor de conversión, y actividad de enzimas extracelulares mediante sustratos análogos fluorogénicos. La biomasa bacteriana presentó en las biopelículas epipsámicas 0.1 y 13.9 mg C m-2 (4.9 x 106 y 6.9 x 108 células m-2) y en las biopelículas epilíticas entre 0.45 y 63.6 mg C m-2 (2.6 x 107 y 3.7 x 109 células m-2). Las enzimas para las cuales se registró la mayor actividad fueron ß-Glucosidasa, Fosfatasa y Celobiohidrolasa, los valores más bajos se registraron para Aminopeptidasa. El contexto en el que los datos obtenidos fueron analizados incluye información sobre la biomasa algal, productividad primaria neta, hidrología y condiciones fisico-químicas del agua. Este trabajo también incluyó una aproximación experimental que interpretó, en un contexto natural, el efecto que tiene el aumento de la carga de nutrientes sobre el desarrollo de la comunidad microbiana en las biopelículas epilíticas. / Abstract. By means of structural and functional biofilms topics evaluation there was made a description of its situation and was taken the problem of increasing the nutrient concentration in an highland Andean river; in Colombia the knowledge generation has begun by studying the bentonic microbiota participation in the matter and energy fluxes in the lotic systems. There were made both: a direct count by epifluorescence microscopy and an extracellular enzyme activity determination by means of analog substrates to reach the objective of: evaluate the community growing over artificial substrates and sediments whit both a temporal and a spatial scale. The bacterial biomass was 0.1 y 13.9 mg C m-2 (4.9 x 106 y 6.9 x 108 células m-2) for the epipsamic biofilms and 0.45 y 63.6 mg C m-2 (2.6 x 107 y 3.7 x 109 células m-2) for the epilithic biofilms. The highest activities were scored for ß-Glucosidase, Phosphatase and Cellobiohidrolase, while Aminopeptidase scored for the lowest values. The context for the data interpretation included the algal biomass, net primary production, hydrology and the physical and chemical characteristics of the water. This paper include an experiment that presents in a natural context, the effect that an increase in the nutrient levels had over the development of the microbial community of the epilithic biofilms.
