The latest Cretaceous Adriatic Carbonate Platform (AdCP) system in the paleo-Mediterranean area stands as one of the most complex and debated topics related to the evolution of land vertebrates in the area surrounding the Tethys Sea. Italy holds the sole Late Cretaceous dinosaur-dominated site of the AdCP, namely the Villaggio del Pescatore locality (VdP). The VdP site was discovered thirty years ago in the Late Cretaceous-Paleogene beds exposed near Duino Aurisina, northeastern Italy, and produced, among fish, crustacean and plant remains, an exquisitely preserved skeleton of the diminutive hadrosauroid Tethyshadros insularis. The type specimen was originally described as a pygmy taxon, showing peculiar adaptations connected to insular conditions. This taxon is here reexamined based on additional specimens from the type locality, making the site the first, multiindividual dinosaur locality of Italy. Sole representative of the latest Cretaceous paleo-Mediterranean archipelago, T. insularis offers unmatched data to infer environmentally-driven body-size trends in non-avian dinosaurs. Histological analyses indicate juvenile features in the type specimen, whereas a second, larger individual, was approaching somatic maturity. Consequently, we revised the former description of the holotype, documenting the morphological variation in this taxon, and highlighting the ontogenetically variable characters. Finally, we investigated the phylogenetic position of Tethyshadros using a phylogenetic comparative framework, which combines ancestral state reconstruction and multiple regime Ornstein-Uhlenbeck models. Such approach enables to evaluate whether the evolution of body-size was following a significant and accelerated trend of reduction in this clade, in order to further test the interpretation of this taxon as an ‘aberrant’, insular dwarf.

Background Little information exists about the role of anemia in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) admitted to Intensive Cardiac Care Units (ICCU). The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of anemia and its impact on management and outcomes in this clinical setting. Methods All consecutive patients admitted to eight different ICCUs with diagnosis of non-ST segment elevation ACS (NSTEACS) were prospectively included. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin < 130 g/L in men and < 120 g/L in women. The association between anemia and mortality or readmission at six months was assessed by the Cox regression method. Results A total of 629 patients were included. Mean age was 66.6 years. A total of 197 patients (31.3%) had anemia. Coronary angiography was performed in most patients (96.2%). Patients with anemia were significantly older, with a higher prevalence of comorbidities, poorer left ventricle ejection fraction and higher GRACE score values. Patients with anemia underwent less often coronary angiography, but underwent more often intraaortic counterpulsation, non-invasive mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapies. Both ICCU and hospital stay were significantly longer in patients with anemia. Both the incidence of mortality (HR = 3.36, 95% CI: 1.43-7.85, P = 0.001) and the incidence of mortality/readmission were significantly higher in patients with anemia (HR = 2.80, 95% CI: 2.03-3.86, P = 0.001). After adjusting for confounders, the association between anemia and mortality/readmission remained significant (P = 0.031). Conclusions Almost one of three NSTEACS patients admitted to ICCU had anemia. Most patients underwent coronary angiography. Anemia was independently associated to poorer outcomes at 6 months.

Integration between systematic phylogenetics and palaeontological data has been probed to be an effective methodology to value palaeodiversities because it identifies periods in the evolutionary history of the clade without fossil representation. These are called ghost lineages. In this work we explore the possible relationship of ghost lineages duration with biometric, biogeografic or ecological variables in the Subfamily Caprinae (Bovidae, Mammalia). Variables were codified as binary characters and their relationship was examined using the concentrated-changes test. Our results indicate that species appearing in rainforest, warm temperate forest, taiga and desert biomes are related with high proportion of ghost lineages, while those from steppe biome present lower proportions. Zones inhabited by species of Caprinae in rainforest, warm temperate forest, taiga and desert are usually associated with high altitudes and a steep topography. Thus, we interpret that proportions in ghost lineages would be determined by probabilities of sedimentation and fossil site development .La integración de la sistemática filogenética con datos paleontológicos ha demostrado ser una eficaz metodología a la hora de estimar paleodiversidades mediante la identificación de periodos en la historia evolutiva de los clados sin representantes fósiles, a los que se denominan linajes fantasma. En este trabajo pretendemos estudiar la posible correlación con variables biométricas, biogeográficas o ecológicas con el fin de averiguar si la duración de los linajes fantasma puede ser relacionada con este tipo de variables. Este estudio está basado en la Subfamilia Caprinae (Bovidae, Mammalia). Las variables estudiadas fueron traducidas a caracteres binarios y se analizó su correlación mediante análisis de cambios concentrados. Nuestros resultados indican que las especies que aparecen en los biomas pluvisilva, laurisilva, taiga y desierto están ligadas a altos porcentajes de linajes fantasma, mientras que las que aparecen en el bioma estepa presentan porcentajes menores. Las zonas ocupadas por las especies de Caprinae en pluvisilva, laurisilva, taiga y desierto están ligadas a altitudes elevadas y con una topografía abrupta. Por tanto, interpretamos que la mayor o menor proporción de linaje fantasma en cada línea evolutiva podrá estar determinada por las posibilidades de sedimentación y formación de yacimientos.

In the present study, parameters related to animal performance and carcass quality were evaluated in order to technically characterize crossbreed calves under commercial farm conditions. Sixty-six male calves of Holstein Frisian crossed with Rubia Gallega (n=43; 65.15%), Limousine (n= 16; 24.24%) and Belgian Blue-White (n=7; 10.61%) were used, in a ratio representative for the beef industry of the area. Nutrition and husbandry practices were identical for all the animals. All the calves were slaughtered at the age of 8 months. Results indicated that the Belgian Blue-White crosses were the heaviest, more compact and with the best body conformation, and also a better carcass performance. On the contrary Limousine crosses showed the leanest carcass and the lowest performance. The carcasses of Rubia Gallega crosses showed intermediate characteristics. No statistically significant differences were found in the fatness content between the three genotypes.

Body measurements in Portuguese Holstein-Friesian breed and its association with the dimensions of the cubicles were investigated. During a period of 5 months, body measurements and cubicles size data from 55 commercial Portuguese dairy herds were collected including in total 1054 individual cows. Data were analyzed using the general linear model and principal components. The most relevant body measurements were: height at withers (141.1±4.72 cm), height at rump (144.2±4.47 cm), length of trunk (170.8±8.31 cm), width of biiliac (55.9±4.17 cm) and perimeter of the thorax (206.8±10.43 cm). The teat-end hyperkeratosis is a pathology which causes pain and discomfort in dairy cows, increasing the risk of infection of the mammary gland. A total of 2,957 dairy cows from 43 farms in Portugal were examined to evaluate the teat-end, degree of hyperkeratosis and callosity on 11,828 teats. Factors related to milking management, characteristics of the individual and udder health status with the most severe level of hyperkeratosis were evaluated. The link between stepping and kicking during milking and the levels of hyperkeratosis was also investigated. Most animals observed (70%) showed signs of hyperkeratosis and 12% showed the teat-end more serious types, thick and extreme.
