Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to report on the clinical magnetic resonance imaging, histological features, treatment options and outcomes of spinal ependymomas in dogs. Materials and Methods: Retrospective evaluation of medical records from dogs histologically confirmed spinal ependymomas with clinical presentations, magnetic resonance imaging findings, histological aspects, treatment options and outcomes. Results: Eight dogs presented with acute to subacute onset of para‐ or tetraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging findings included intramedullary oval‐shaped space‐occupying lesions that appeared hyperintense on T2‐weighted images isointense on T1‐weighted images and exhibited marked homogeneous or ring contrast enhancement. A peculiar feature, previously described only in human ependymomas, was observed in three patients – a T2‐weighted hypointense rim, termed hemosiderin cap sign. Haematomyelia with necrotic foci was observed in one dog. Surgery, when performed, enabling a definitive intra‐vitam diagnosis. Histological examination revealed that rosettes and pseudo‐rosettes as disposition of neoplastic cells were the most common features reported. Furthermore, cerebrospinal fluid metastases were identified in one case. Clinical Significance: Clinical and histopathological findings in our case series were consistent with those previously reported in the literature. Magnetic resonance imaging features were fairly typical and highly suggestive of spinal ependymomas. The hemosiderin cap sign may aid in the presumptive intra‐vitam diagnosis of these rare spinal tumours. Additionally, we described cerebrospinal fluid spread of neoplastic cells and subsequent multifocal or metastasis presentations. Surgery offered a dual benefit by facilitating intra‐vitam diagnosis and, in some cases, extending survival time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. Mice as paratenic hosts of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus

Abstract

Background Several species of nematodes included in the superfamily Metastrongyloidea are recognized agents of parasitic infections in felines. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is the most prevalent species affecting the respiratory system of domestic cats. The route of infection in cats is supposed to be through ingestion of gastropod intermediate or paratenic hosts. However, because gastropods are not the preferred preys of cats, rodents were suggested to play an important role as paratenic hosts in the biological cycle of A. abstrusus and in the epidemiology of aelurostrongylosis. Results Two studies were conducted to document histopathological tissue lesions in mice experimentally infected with A. abstrusus third-stage larvae (L3) (Study 1), and to determine larval counts in their organs (Study 2). Additionally, cats were fed with experimentally infected mice to assess their infectivity. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus L3 were recovered from the liver, spleen, brain, skeletal muscle and gastrointestinal tract tissues by artificial digestion, and heart, spleen and brain tested positive for A. abstrusus at molecular diagnosis. Multifocal encephalitis and meningitis and glial nodules were the most common histopathological lesions found in mice inoculated with A. abstrusus. All cats shed first-stage larvae of A. abstrusus after ingestion of mice inoculated with this nematode. Conclusions In this study, we provide information on the anatomical localization, histopathological alterations and rate of recovery of A. abstrusus L3 in mice, and confirm their infectivity to cats (definitive hosts) after feeding on infected mice (paratenic hosts). Data presented here add knowledge to further understand the biology of A. abstrusus in mice and underline the importance of mice as paratenic hosts of this nematode for the infection of cats.

Abstract

Gli Autori riferiscono riguardo un cane meticcio femmina di 15 anni di età con monoparesi posteriore sinistra ingravescente. Nonostante la terapia medica con prednisone abbia determinato un parziale miglioramento, si è proceduto ad un approfondimento diagnostico mediante esecuzione di EMG e biopsia muscolo-nervosa. l'EMG ha evidenziato riduzione della VCM e della VCS del nervo sciatico mentre la biopsia del nervo sciatico sx e del muscolo semitendinoso sx hanno evidenziarto rispettivamente un quadro di neuropatia demielinizzante e atrofia muscolare neurogena. Gli Autori hanno avanzato il sospetto diagnostico di esito di neurite focale al plesso lombo-sacrale sinistro. Dopo tre mesi il cane è migliorato quasi del tutto pur rimanendo segni riferibili ad atrofia neurogena.

International audience; This retrospective study describes risk/protection factors for the development of clinical West Nile Fever (WNF) in equids, compares clinical presentation in three European countries, France, Italy and Hungary, and creates classification and regression trees (CART) to facilitate clinical diagnosis. The peak of WNF occurrence was observed in September whatever the country. A significant difference between Italy and France was observed in the delay between initial clinical signs and veterinary consultation. No clinical sign was significantly associated with WNF. Despite similar clinical presentations in the three countries, occurrence of hyperthermia was more frequently reported in France. Classification and regression tree demonstrated the major importance of geographical locality and month to reach a diagnosis and emphasized differences in predominant clinical signs depending on the period of detection of the suspected case (epizootic or not). However, definite diagnosis requires specific serological tests. Centralized reporting system and time-space risk mapping should be promoted in every country.

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to study lateral palmar nerve (LPN) and medial palmar nerve (MPN) morphology and determine nociception and sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) following placement of continuous peripheral nerve block (CPNB) catheters along LPN and MPN with subsequent bupivacaine (BUP) infusion. Myelinated nerve fiber distribution in LPN and MPN was examined after harvesting nerve specimens in 3 anesthetized horses and processing them for morphometric analysis. In 5 sedated horses, CPNB catheters were placed along each PN in both forelimbs. Horses then received in one forelimb 3 mL 0.125% BUP containing epinephrine 1:200 000 and 0.04% NaHCO3 per catheter site followed by 2 mL/h infusion over a 6-day period, while in the other forelimb equal amounts of saline (SAL) solution were administered. The hoof withdrawal response (HWR) threshold during pressure loading of the area above the dorsal coronary band was determined daily in both forelimbs. On day 6 SNCV was measured under general anesthesia of horses in each limb’s LPN and MPN to detect nerve injury, followed by CPNB catheter removal. The SNCV was also recorded in 2 anesthetized non-instrumented horses (sham controls). In both LPN and MPN myelinated fiber distributions were bimodal. The fraction of large fibers (>7 μm) was greater in the MPN than LPN (P < 0.05). Presence of CPNB catheters and SAL administration did neither affect measured HWR thresholds nor SNCVs, whereas BUP infusion suppressed HWRs. In conclusion, CPNB with 0.125% BUP provides pronounced analgesia by inhibiting sensory nerve conduction in the distal equine forelimb.
