The tetragonal phase of chromium (III) oxide, although unstable in the bulk, can be synthesized in epitaxial heterostructures. The theoretical investigation by density functional theory predicts an antiferromagnetic ground state for this compound. We demonstrate experimentally antiferromagnetism up to 40 K in ultrathin films of t-Cr2O3 by electrical measurements exploiting interface effect within a neighboring ultrathin Pt layer. We show that magnetotransport in Pt is affected by both spin-Hall magnetoresistance and magnetic proximity effect while we exclude any role of magnetism for the low-temperature resistance anomaly observed in Pt., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, Accepted in PRB (2019)

We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of magnetic proximity and Hall transport in Pt/Cr bilayers. Density functional theory indicates that an interfacial magnetization can be induced in the Pt layer and a strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy with an easy axis out of plane arises in the antiferromagnet. A signal ascribed to the anomalous Hall effect is detected and associated to the interface between Pt and Cr layers. We show that this effect originates from the combination of proximity-induced magnetization and a nontrivial topology of the band structure at the interface.

Tetragonal phase of CuMnAs progressively appears as one of the key materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics due to efficient current-induced spin-orbit torques whose existence can be directly inferred from crystal symmetry. Theoretical understanding of spintronic phenomena in this material, however, relies on the detailed knowledge of electronic structure (band structure and corresponding wave functions) which has so far been tested only to a limited extent. We show that AC permittivity (obtained from ellipsometry) and UV photoelectron spectra agree with density functional calculations. Together with the x-ray diffraction and precession electron diffraction tomography, our analysis confirms recent theoretical claim [Phys.Rev.B 96, 094406 (2017)] that copper atoms occupy lattice positions in the basal plane of the tetragonal unit cell., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures + Supplementary Information

Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in logic or storage devices thanks to their robustness, guaranteed by the topological protection, and their nanometric size. Currently, little is known about the influence of parameters such as disorder, defects or external stimuli, on the long-range spatial distribution and temporal evolution of the skyrmion lattice. Here, using a large (7.3x7.3{\mu}m$^{2}$) single crystal nano-slice of Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$, we image up to 70,000 skyrmions, by means of cryo-Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy as a function of the applied magnetic field. The emergence of the skyrmion lattice from the helimagnetic phase is monitored, revealing the existence of a glassy skyrmion phase at the phase transition field, where patches of an octagonally distorted skyrmion lattice are also discovered. In the skyrmion phase, dislocations are shown to cause the emergence and switching between domains with different lattice orientations and the temporal fluctuations of these domains is filmed. GeTe has been proposed as the father compound of a new class of functional materials displaying bulk Rashba effects coupled to ferroelectricity: ferroelectric Rashba semiconductors. In nice agreement with first principle calculations, we show by angular resolved photoemission and piezo-force microscopy that GeTe displays surface and bulk Rashba bands arising from the intrinsic inversion symmetry breaking provided by the remanent ferroelectric polarization. This work points to the possibility to control the spin chirality of bands in GeTe by acting on its ferroelectric polarization., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Imaging of flux vortices in high quality MgB$_2$ single crystals has been successfully performed in a commercial Field Emission Gun-based Transmission Electron Microscope. In Cryo-Lorentz Microscopy, the sample quality and the vortex lattice can be monitored simultaneously, allowing one to relate microscopically the surface quality and the vortex dynamics. Such a vortex motion ultimately determines the flow resistivity, $\rho_{f}$, the knowledge of which is indispensable for practical applications such as superconducting magnets or wires for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The observed patterns have been analyzed and compared with other studies by Cryo-Lorentz Microscopy or Bitter decoration. We find that the vortex lattice arrangement depends strongly on the surface quality obtained during the specimen preparation, and tends to form an hexagonal Abrikosov lattice at a relatively low magnetic field. Stripes or gossamer-like patterns, recently suggested as potential signatures of an unconventional behavior of MgB$_2$, were not observed.

Optical spin orientation and depolarization phenomena in semiconductors are of overwhelming importance for the development of spin-optoelectronics. In this paper we employ Ge-based spin-photodiodes to investigate the room temperature spectral dependence of optical spin orientation in Germanium, in the range 400-1550 nm, and the photo-carrier spin relaxation phenomena. Apart from the maximum in the spin polarization of photo-carriers for photon energy resonant with the direct gap (1550 nm), we experimentally demonstrate the presence of a second sizable peak at 530 nm due to photo-generation far away from the center of the Brillouin zone, within the L valleys. Furthermore, our data indicate that the equivalent the spin lifetime of holes in Ge is in the order of 5-10 ps, meaning that the spin diffusion length for holes at room temperature is larger than expected, in the order of 150-220 nm., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The design of large-scale electronic circuits that are entirely spintronics-driven requires a current source that is highly spin-polarised at and beyond room temperature, cheap to build, efficient at the nanoscale and straightforward to integrate with semiconductors. Yet despite research within several subfields spanning nearly two decades, this key building block is still lacking. We experimentally and theoretically show how the interface between Co and phthalocyanine molecules constitutes a promising candidate. Spin-polarised direct and inverse photoemission experiments reveal a high degree of spin polarisation at room temperature at this interface. We measured a magnetic moment on the molecules's nitrogen pi orbitals, which substantiates an ab-initio theoretical description of highly spin-polarised charge conduction across the interface due to differing spinterface formation mechanims in each spin channel. We propose, through this example, a recipe to engineer simple organic-inorganic interfaces with remarkable spintronic properties that can endure well above room temperature.

Here we show the room temperature integrated detection of the helicity of photons with 1300 nm wavelength, via spin- photodiodes based on fully epitaxial Fe/MgO/Ge(001) heterostructures. These devices convert the photon helicity in a variation of the photocurrent ({\Delta}I) for opposite orientations of the Fe magnetization. We found {\Delta}I on the order of 5.9% for 100% circularly polarized light, both in the forward and the reverse bias, with a contribution of 0.8% from the Fe dichroic light absorption and of 5.1% from the spin filtering of photo-generated carriers crossing the Fe/MgO/Ge tunneling barrier., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to some imperfections in the figures

We probe spin transport in Cu_{2}O by measuring spin valve effect in La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/Cu_{2}O/Co and La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/Cu_{2}O/La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3} epitaxial heterostructures. In La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/Cu_{2}O/Co systems we find that a fraction of out-of-equilibrium spin polarized carrier actually travel across the Cu_{2}O layer up to distances of almost 100 nm at low temperature. The corresponding spin diffusion length dspin is estimated around 40 nm. Furthermore, we find that the insertion of a SrTiO_{3} tunneling barrier does not improve spin injection, likely due to the matching of resistances at the interfaces. Our result on dspin may be likely improved, both in terms of Cu_{2}O crystalline quality and sub-micrometric morphology and in terms of device geometry, indicating that Cu_{2}O is a potential material for efficient spin transport in devices based on crystalline oxides., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

The manipulation of geometrically constrained magnetic domain walls (DWs) in nanoscale magnetic strips has attracted much interest recently, with proposals for prospective memory and logic devices. Here we propose to use the high controllability of the motion of geometrically constrained DWs for the manipulation of individual nanoparticles on a chip with an active control of position at the nanometer scale. The proposed method exploits the fact that magnetic nanoparticles in solution can be captured by a DW, whose position can be manipulated with nanometric accuracy in a specifically designed magnetic nanowire structure. We show that the high control over DW nucleation, displacement, and annihilation processes in such structures can be used to capture, transport and release magnetic nanoparticles. As magnetic particles with functionalized surfaces are commonly used as molecule labels in several applications - including single molecule manipulation, separation, cells manipulation and biomagnetic sensing, the accurate control over the handling of the single magnetic nanoparticles becomes crucial as it may reflect the handling of the single molecules. The approach described here opens the path to the implementation and design of nano-transport lines, with application to single molecule study and lab-on-chip devices. In perspective, the easy integration on chip with sensors of domain walls and particles will allow for the realization of programmable circuits for molecular manipulation with continuous control of the desired process.

A new approach based on the domain wall displacement in confined ferromagnetic nanostructures for attracting and sensing a single nanometric magnetic particles is presented. We modeled and experimentally demonstrated the viability of the approach using an anisotropic magnetoresistance device made by a micron-size square ring of Permalloy designed for application in magnetic storage. We report specific heat measurements at magnetic fields up to 20 T on the recently discovered superconductor SmFeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$. The B-T diagram of a polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ sample with T$_c$ = 46 K was investigated. The temperature dependence of B$_{c2}$ was extracted from the specific heat curves, the corresponding B$_{c2}$(T = 0) value derived from the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula being 150 T. Based on magnetization measurements up to 9 T, a first estimation of the field dependence of the inductive critical current J$_c$ is given. Evidence for granularity is found. The presence of a peak effect is reported, suggesting a crossover in the vortex dynamics, in analogy to the behaviour observed in high T$_c$ cuprates., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review B

The effect of gold capping on magnetic and transport properties of optimally doped manganite thin films is studied. An extraordinary suppression of conductivity and magnetic properties occurs in epitaxial (001) La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO_3 (LSMO) films grown on SrTiO_3 upon deposition of 2 nm of Au: in the case of ultrathin films of LSMO (4 nm thick) the resistivity increases by four orders of magnitude while the Curie temperature decreases by 180 K. Zero-field 55Mn nuclear magnetic resonance reveals a significant reduction of ferromagnetic double-exchange mechanism in manganite films upon the gold capping. We find evidence for the formation of a 1.9-nm thick magnetic "dead-layer" at the Au/LSMO interface, associated with the creation of interfacial non double-exchange insulating phases., Comment: 4 figures

We report about La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 single crystal manganite thin films in interaction with a gold capping layer. With respect to uncoated manganite layers of the same thickness, Au-capped 4 nm-thick manganite films reveal a dramatic reduction (about 185 K) of the Curie temperature TC and a lower saturation low-temperature magnetization M0. A sizeable TC reduction (about 60 K) is observed even when an inert SrTiO3 layer is inserted between the gold film and the 4 nm-thick manganite layer, suggesting that this effect might have an electrostatic origin.

Artificial PbTiO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ superlattices were constructed using off-axis RF magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction and piezoelectric atomic force microscopy were used to study the evolution of the ferroelectric polarization as the ratio of PbTiO$_{3}$ to SrTiO$_{3}$ was changed. For PbTiO$_{3}$ layer thicknesses larger than the 3-unit cells SrTiO$_{3}$ thickness used in the structure, the polarization is found to be reduced as the PbTiO$_{3}$ thickness is decreased. This observation confirms the primary role of the depolarization field in the polarization reduction in thin films. For the samples with ratios of PbTiO$_{3}$ to SrTiO$_{3}$ of less than one a surprising recovery of ferroelectricity that cannot be explained by electrostatic considerations was observed.
