In this study, the flow boiling heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of refrigerant R134a in micro-channels were experimentally investigated. The tests were performed in circular horizontal micro-channels with inner diameters of 0.5 mm and 1 mm and a heating length of 300 mm. The mass velocities varied from 500 kg/m²s to 2500 kg/m²s, and the heat fluxes varied from 15 kW/m² to 147 kW/m². The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and frictional pressure drop (FPD) were measured and discussed in detail. According to the results, HTC was significantly affected by heat flux, whereas it was independent of mass velocity. Nucleate boiling was the dominant heat transfer mechanism for R134a flow boiling in the micro-channels. In comparison to the 1 mm channel, the 0.5 mm channel shows better performance in heat transfer, with a maximum increase of approximately 22 %. In addition, FPD increased with increasing mass velocity and decreasing channel diameter. Finally, several existing correlations for HTC and FPD were evaluated by comparing them with the experimental values. Tran's correlation (1996) presented a better agreement in terms of the average HTC, while for the FPD, the model of Kim and Mudawar (2013b) showed good prediction accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Introduction: There is conflicting evidence whether high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia. Genetic variation in the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) locus is associated with altered HDL-C. We aimed to assess AD risk by genetically predicted HDL-C. Methods: Ten single nucleotide polymorphisms within the CETP locus predicting HDL-C were applied to the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP) exome chip stage 1 results in up 16,097 late onset AD cases and 18,077 cognitively normal elderly controls. We performed instrumental variables analysis using inverse variance weighting, weighted median, and MR-Egger. Results: Based on 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms distinctly predicting HDL-C in the CETP locus, we found that HDL-C was not associated with risk of AD (P >.7). Discussion: Our study does not support the role of HDL-C on risk of AD through HDL-C altered b

Minor content of Mo was added to FeBCCuMo ( x = 0-1.25) alloys to improve soft magnetic properties. DC-BH loop tracer measurements show that FeBCCuMo nanocrystalline alloy exhibits a coercivity H as low as 2.1 A/m without the expense of saturation flux density. Transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy confirms that proper content of Mo would induce high degree of composition fluctuation facilitating the nucleation process, which is consistent with the DSC analysis. The excellent soft magnetic properties of this alloy are thus ascribed to the ultrafine α-Fe grains separating in the amorphous matrix as revealed by TEM measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Importance: Plasmid size is one of the factors affecting transfection efficacy in most of the molecular genetic research studies. One effective approach for reducing plasmid size is to replace relatively large, conventional antibiotic resistance genes with the short-size dfrB10 gene. The successful construct of a series of dfrB10- based tool plasmids and their functional validation, via comparison with original plasmids, suggest that dfrB10 is a potent drug resistance selection marker. The antibiotic trimethoprim offers convenient usage comparable to that of ampicillin or kanamycin. Additionally, fluorescence analysis has demonstrated the compatibility of TMP with protein expression in various host cells. Based on these findings, TMP- dfrB10 could be an alternative choice for future use in molecular genetic research studies that require miniature plasmids to achieve optimal results., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

- Abstract
In this work, an attempt has been made to reveal critical factors dominating the crystallization and soft magnetic properties of Fe
81 Six B10 P8-x Cu1 (x = 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8) alloys. Both melt spun and annealed alloys are characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and magnetometry. The changes in magnetic interaction between Fe atoms and chemical homogeneity can well explain the variation of magnetic properties of Fe81 Six B10 P8-x Cu1 amorphous alloys. The density of nucleation sites in the amorphous precursors decreases in the substitution of P by Si. Meanwhile, the precipitated nanograins gradually coarsen, but the inhibiting effect of P on grain growth diminishes causing the increase of the crystallinity. Moreover, various site occupancies of Si are observed in the nanocrystallites and the Si occupancy in bcc Fe decreases the average magnetic moment of nanograins. Without sacrificing amorphous forming ability, we can obtain FeSiBPCu nanocrystalline alloy with excellent soft magnetic properties by optimizing the content of Si and P in the amorphous precursors.- Published
