7. Interfacial fluid manipulation with bioinspired strategies: special wettability and asymmetric structures.

Abstract

The inspirations from nature always enlighten us to develop advanced science and technology. To survive in complicated and harsh environments, plants and animals have evolved remarkable capabilities to control fluid transfer via sophisticated designs such as wettability contrast, oriented micro-/nano-structures, and geometry gradients. Based on the bioinspired structures, the on-surface fluid manipulation exhibits spontaneous, continuous, smart, and integrated performances, which can promote the applications in the fields of heat transfer, microfluidics, heterogeneous catalysis, water harvesting, etc. Although fluid manipulating interfaces (FMIs) have provided plenty of ideas to optimize the current systems, a comprehensive review of history, classification, fabrication, and integration focusing on their interfacial chemistry and asymmetric structure is highly required. In this review, we systematically introduce development and highlight the state-of-the-art progress of bioinspired FMIs. Firstly, the biological prototype and development timeline are presented, and the underlying mechanism of on-surface fluid control on versatile structures is analyzed. Secondly, the definition and classification of FMIs as well as the strategy for controlling fluid/interface interaction are discussed. Thirdly, emergent applications of FMIs in practical scenarios including fog/vapor collection, fluid diodes, interfacial catalysis, etc. are presented. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects of interfacial liquid manipulation are concluded. We envision that this review should provide guidance for the incorporation of FMIs into suitable situations, which enlightens interdisciplinary research and practical applications in the fields of interface chemistry, materials design, bionic science, fluid dynamics, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Interfacial floater possessing an open surface diversifies the functions of current systems in the field of solar evaporation, micro‐detector, multiphase catalysis, etc. However, most of the current floaters still face challenges such as the anti‐submersion, orientation adjusting, and multifunctional capabilities. Drawing inspiration from water striders and diving bell spiders, here a superhydrophobic cellular origami (SCO) is proposed with reliable stability, submerge resistance, switchable floatability, and multifunctional integration. The remarkable floating ability is achieved through the air storage ability of superhydrophobic air cells. SCO floats stably on the water surface and has a maximum load capacity that is 48% higher than the superhydrophobic sheet. Besides, SCO can resurface rapidly after complete submersion, even using titanium metal as substrate. To further enhance the universality of SCO, the Janus SCO with unbalanced structure can float with a specific orientation facing up and the origami structure is optimized to be switchable with hinge structure for adjustable buoyancy. To prove the concept in 3D structure, a cylindrical SCO is presented for cable locating on the water surface. This study presents an achievable strategy to extend superhydrophobic surfaces into anti‐sinking floaters, offering valuable insights into the development of multifunctional interface carriers. Abstract

Designing a stable and uniform hydrophilic material for separation of oil and water is strongly desired for sustainable management of oily wastewater. Herein, a stable and uniform bio-inspired coating onto the non-woven fabric substrate with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity via rapid co-deposition of dopamine and polyethylenimine was demonstrated. Ammonium persulfate outperformed other oxidants (e.g., Cu2+-H2O2 and NaIO4) to rapidly trigger the co-deposition of dopamine and polyethylenimine for homogeneous superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surface engineering. Furthermore, the co-deposition conditions, i.e., concentration of ammonium persulfate and exposure duration, have a positive dependence on the hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity of the coated fabric membranes. Specifically, the superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity (underwater oil contact angle of 165.4 ± 1.1°, sliding angle of 2.5 ± 0.5°) can be obtained for the coated fabric membranes at the optimal co-deposition condition (i.e., 28.5 mmol L- 1 persulfate and coating duration of 7 h), showing a great potential in gravitational oil-water separation (permeation flux >115,000 L m-2 h-1; oil rejection >99.2%). Integrating with a superhydrophobic copper mesh, the oil-water mixed solution can be continuously and sufficiently separated, realizing simultaneous recovery of pure oil and water from oily wastewater. In addition, the bio-inspired coating displays a strong long-term chemical robustness and stability in extreme environments (i.e., acidic/alkaline solutions and oils). The study provides a facile, cost-effective and practical strategy in constructing superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic interfaces for sustainable treatment of oily wastewater.
