Abstract

The Antarctic subglacial drilling rig (ASDR) is designed to recover 105 mm-diameter ice cores up to 1400m depth and 41.5 mm-diameter bedrock cores up to 2m in length. In order to ensure safe and convenient drilling, drilling auxiliaries are designed to support fieldwork and servicing. These auxiliaries are subdivided into several systems for power supply, drill tripping in the borehole, ice core and chip processing, and drill servicing and maintenance. The required equipment also includes two generators, a drilling winch with a cable, logging winch with a cable, control desk, pipe handler with a fixed clamp, chip chamber vibrator, centrifuge, emergency devices and fitting and electrical tools. Additionally, several environmental protective measures such as a new liquid-tight casing with a thermal casing shoe and a bailing device for recovering drilling fluid from the borehole were designed. Most of the auxiliaries were tested during the summer of 2018-2019 near Zhongshan Station, East Antarctica while drilling to the bedrock to a depth of 198 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Design and rigid body dynamics analysis of a novel retractable drill bit used in casing-while-drilling

Abstract

Utilizing the Geneva drive mechanism, an inventive retractable drill bit tailored for casing-while-drilling (CwD) applications was developed. This novel design allows the lower segment of the drill bit to be swung outward through rotation, facilitating to drill a larger hole and retrieved effortlessly by raising the drill tools. An exploration into the dynamic behavior of this retractable drill bit under varying drilling conditions was undertaken, focusing on parameters such as weight-on-bit, rotation speed, friction coefficient between the drill bit and rock, and lifting force. Findings from the investigation revealed that, under conditions of 20 kN weight-on-bit, a friction coefficient of 0.3, and a rotation speed of 30 rpm, the drill bit achieved full extension within 3.8 s. Notably, the movement speed of the lower drill bit was notably influenced by weight-on-bit, the friction coefficient, and lifting force, demonstrating accelerated movement with increased values of these factors. Rotation speed, however, exhibited negligible impact on the movement of the drill bit. An indoor experimental examination mirrored the outcomes obtained through simulations. Subsequent to numerical simulations and indoor testing, a large-diameter drill bit was produced and field tested, showcasing its capability to flexibly extend and retract during drilling, achieving an average drilling speed of 1.7 m/h.

Abstract

Ice-core drilling to depths of 200–300 m is an important part of research studies concerned with paleoclimate reconstruction and anthropogenic climate change. However, conventional drilling methods face difficulties due to firn permeability. We have developed an electromechanical ice-core drill with air reverse circulation at the hole bottom. We believe that the new drilling system will recover ice cores faster than shallow auger drills, with high efficiency and low energy consumption. The theoretically estimated up-hole speed of the airflow should be not <7.7 m s−1 to allow proper removal of ice cuttings from the borehole bottom. The computer simulation and test results showed that the design of the new ice-coring drill is feasible. The maximum allowed penetration rate depends by square law on airflow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains (GSM), located in the central part of East Antarctica, have become the subject of great scientific interest because the mechanism driving the uplift of the range, which resembles younger mountain ranges in shape, in the middle of the old Antarctic Plate is unknown. The next step planned in the exploration of the GSM will be focused on direct examination of the ice sheet bed by drilling. The use of cable-suspended drilling technology is proposed. All of the drilling equipment will be installed inside a movable, sledge-mounted, temperature-controlled, and wind-protected drilling shelter and workshop connected by steel pathway. To drill through ice and bedrock, a new version of the cable-suspended ice and bedrock electromechanical drill was designed and tested. During the 2017–18 season, the drilling shelter and workshop will be assembled near the Zhongshan Station and first field tests will be carried out. Drilling for bedrock on the GSM is planned as soon as full financial and logistical support is obtained for the project.
